The Magic of "Tangled" Shines Onstage in Brand-New "Tangled: The Musical" Stage Show Aboard Disney Cruise

Original music by Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken headlines new stage show adaptation of Disney animated film

In November 2015, “Tangled: The Musical” will premiere aboard the Disney Magic, marking the first time the beloved animated film “Tangled” has been adapted for the stage. (Disney)

CELEBRATION, Fla. (April 2, 2015) - In November 2015, the endearing characters and captivating music of the animated film "Tangled" will enchant audiences once again, this time as an original stage show spectacular at sea aboard the Disney Magic-the first time the beloved Disney tale has been adapted for the stage.

"Tangled: The Musical" will immerse audiences in Rapunzel's fairytale world through lavish production numbers and spellbinding music. Three new songs created exclusively for this show by Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken and Grammy Award-winning lyricist Glenn Slater will bring the story to life onstage.

The show will stay true to the storyline from the hit feature film-with a few special twists to create a live staged production-featuring favorite characters like Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, the villainous Mother Gothel and Maximus the police horse. The story follows the thrilling adventure of Rapunzel as she escapes the confines of her tower and the clutches of Mother Gothel, who wishes to shield the secret of Rapunzel's magical golden tresses and royal roots. Rapunzel strikes up an unlikely friendship with the suave, crown-stealing bandit Flynn Rider, and together they face ruffians, thugs and a budding romance on a hair-raising journey filled with classic Disney playfulness and whimsy that will delight audiences of all ages.

New Songs Debuting with Film Favorites

Acclaimed composer Alan Menken ("The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast") and lyricist Glenn Slater, the prolific pair behind the original soundtrack for "Tangled," teamed up again to adapt the score and story for the stage. Complementing the score from the film, three new songs weave a delightful combination of narrative, humor and theatrics into the performance.

In addition to new melodies, audiences will enjoy live performances of favorite songs from the movie, including "When Will My Life Begin," "Mother Knows Best," "I Have a Dream" and the Grammy Award-winning ballad, "I See the Light."

Adapting "Tangled" from Screen to Stage

Elaborate costumes, groundbreaking puppetry and stunning set designs transform the 977-seat Walt Disney Theatre into a fanciful Bavarian kingdom, immersing audiences in Rapunzel's world and making them feel a part of her story. Disney assembled an all-star creative team to develop this extravagant production, with director Gordon Greenberg and choreographer Connor Gallagher joining Menken, Slater and a bevy of top-notch theatrical talent.

Master puppet designer Michael Curry, whose extraordinary creations are featured in Disney's Tony Award-winning musical "The Lion King" on Broadway, is breeding a brand-new pedigree of puppetry in Maximus, the rambunctious police horse whose exaggerated demeanor becomes even more hilarious with the addition of the whinnying puppet performer within. This cleverly constructed character is sure to be the "mane" attraction of every scene he steals.

Dazzling costumes created by Tony Award-winning designer Paloma Young will bring the flair and vibrancy of the animated world to life onstage in "Tangled: The Musical." The townspeople's bright hues and Rapunzel's feminine florals are perfectly balanced by the bristly browns of the rugged thugs and royal regalia of the kingdom officials, creating a sensational fusion of colors, patterns and textures.

Remarkable set designs by scenic designer Bradley Kaye (Disney's "Aladdin-A Musical Spectacular") will transport audiences to storybook locales that include Rapunzel's tower home, the outlandish Snuggly Duckling tavern, a brightly adorned kingdom town and the resplendent lakeside setting of the iconic floating lanterns scene from the film.

New Show Joining Line Up of Exclusive Stage Productions

"Tangled: The Musical" complements the line-up of Disney Cruise Line-exclusive live entertainment performed every voyage aboard the Disney Magic, joining "Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story" and "Disney Dreams... An Enchanted Classic," which will feature a new segment from the blockbuster animated hit "Frozen" beginning in summer 2015. "Tangled: The Musical" will premiere during the Nov. 11 four-night Bahamian sailing aboard the Disney Magic. The Disney Magic will sail four-night Bahamas and five-night Western Caribbean cruises from Miami beginning Sept. 30 through the new year.

Dal sito Playbill.com:

Meet the Cast and Go Behind the Scenes as Disney Brings Tangled to Life on Stage!

Disney has released a series of videos documenting the transformation of its animated feature "Tangled" into a new 60-minute stage musical for its Disney Magic cruise ship. The production features three additional songs and may take on further life beyond the sea. Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater adapted the film for the stage adaptation that premiered Nov. 11 on Disney Magic. Director Gordon Greenberg is helming Tangled. Tangled will celebrate its opening night Nov. 14. While the production is currently only slated to play the Disney Magic cruise line, sources tell Playbill.com that the creative team is eager to see the show expanded into a full-length stage musical. Disney created a completely immersive experience for the production, which transforms the 977-seat Walt Disney Theatre into a "fanciful Bavarian kingdom, immersing audiences in Rapunzel’s world and making them feel a part of her story."

The cast includes Elisha Ainsley as Rapunzel, Jimmy Larkin (Guard/Drunk Thug/Lantern Seller), David Wright Jr. (Guard, Gunther Thug, Townsperson), Nick Pankuch (Flynn Rider), Cate Cozzens (Queen, Fan, Killer Thug), Elliott Litherland (King/Captain/Thor Thug), Kyle Blair (Sage/Guard/Hook Hand Thug/Baker), Alison Davi (Lady/Fan/Guard/Wild Girl), Maris Fernandes (Lady/Fan/Guard/Fruit Seller), Courtney Leigh Halford (Nurse/Fan/Atilla Thug/Town Mom), Jeffrey Todd Stevens (Stabbington/Big Nose Thug/Flag Seller), Jacob Chancellor (Stabbington, Vladimir Thug/Metals Seller), Charis Vaughn (Fan, Bruiser Thug, Balloon Seller), Sydney Patrick (Girl/Fan), Katie Whetsell (Mother Gothel), Emma Burkholder (Rapunzel Double/Townsperson/Puppeteer), David Colston Corris (Maximus/Guard), Eric Deiboldt (Boy/Ulf Thug/Guard) and Jack Hazelton (Flynn Double/Fang/Townsperson/Puppeteer), along with swings Karl Urban and Reye Lederman.

The musical has arrangements and orchestrations by Timothy Williams, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, projection design by Aaron Rhyne, sound design by Cricket S. Mysers, puppet design by Michael Curry, costume design by Paloma Young, scenic design by Bradley Kaye and choreography by Connor Gallagher. Here's how it's billed: "The story follows the thrilling adventure of Rapunzel as she escapes the confines of her tower and the clutches of Mother Gothel, who wishes to shield the secret of Rapunzel's magical golden tresses and royal roots. Rapunzel strikes up an unlikely friendship with the suave, crown-stealing bandit Flynn Rider, and together they face ruffians, thugs and a budding romance on a hair-raising journey filled with classic Disney playfulness and whimsy that will delight audiences of all ages." Songs in the musical include "When Will My Life Begin?," "Mother Knows Best," "I've Got a Dream" and "I See the Light." Newly added are "Flower of Gold," "Wanted Man" and "When She Returns." Here's a look at Tangled's journey to the stage.

Qui una recensione sul musical:

Dal sito Inside The Magic:

REVIEW: “Tangled: The Musical” is a spellbinding stage masterpiece worthy of Disney’s lineage

“Disney magic” is a term that gets thrown around a whole lot in our medium. Some look at it as a term of endearment, while others embrace it as a casual cliché. But sometimes — just sometimes — Disney will put out a product or a piece of entertainment that lives up to the near-impossible standards of the phrase Disney magic, and meets the cutthroat expectations of a room full of Disney Cruise Line tourists craving a glimpse into the soul of what makes the Disney lineage such a cherished storytelling medium.

For guests on board the Disney Magic cruise ship, that product is Tangled: The Musical.

Based off of the fan-favorite animated feature of the same name, the story centers around a lone scoundrel named Flynn Rider and his crazy random happenstance of running into the beautiful, long-haired Rapunzel. Now, Disney could have taken an easy way out with this production: they could’ve done a bunch of lame projections, and set up an eye-rolling song cycle (I’m looking at you, Frozen at Hollywood Studios) that would leave children clapping and adults craving any one of the nearby tropical bars on board the ship. Instead, the team behind the musical has gone above and beyond to not only re-create the magic of Tangled, but retell the story in a way that immerses audiences in that world and equally spellbinds them.

The score features all new songs by film/broadway composer Alan Menken, some expert puppetry magic with the representation of Maximus the horse, and a cast cooked to perfection and well-versed in the ways of Disney character acting. From a scaling projection that gives audiences a grand sense of the height of Rapunzel’s tower, to creative and quick set changes (all the love in the world to the Snuggly Duckling sequence), this may very well be the first time a Disney Cruise Director has used the phrase “Broadway-style” to describe one of their shows, and I actually walked out believing it.

I’d like to throw some special love to the sending of the lanterns sequence, featuring the tear-jerking number “I See The Light”. For those who may not be familiar, this is the scene when Rapunzel and Flynn serenade each other with a beautiful song out in the middle of a lake as floating lanterns dance and sparkle around them. It’s easily the most beautiful moment in the film, and I was squirming in my seat, super-nervous as to how they would pull off the grandeur of the spectacle. On stage, the trees slowly move back off-stage, and the canoe floats to center. Suddenly, lanterns begin floating overhead above the audience, start projecting themselves onto the stage, and the cast gently begins pacing out into the crowd, swaying and holding lanterns high above our heads. It was not only a completely transcendent moment for just about everybody around me (I was a sobbing mess), but I actually enjoyed the sequence better on stage then I did in the film. Because in that moment, I was there. It was real.

That was Disney magic.

For those looking to take a Disney cruise, I would almost solely recommend a trip on the Magic just to have the opportunity to see Tangled: The Musical in all it’s glory. It’s one of those cruise ship productions that doesn’t feel like a cruise ship production, and sets the bar for what we should expect from the folks at Disney. It’s that spectacular.

Disney Cruise Line’s Tangled: The Musical is now performing exclusively on the Disney Magic.

For all things Disney, you’re already at the right place: Inside The Magic.

Glen Slater parla della possibilità di portare a Broadway il musical.

Dal sito Broadway World:

Another report that been circulating is the possibility that TANGLED will make its way to Broadway. I know that Disney recently adapted it to the stage for its Magic Cruise line.

Well again, Alan and I would absolutely love to do it for Broadway. We wrote three new songs

for the cruise ship show, which feel just as good and just as organic to the story as the other songs do, and really start to develop an exciting way of telling that story which I think would translate to Broadway very well. And I'm fairly certain that Disney Theatricals has some thoughts about what they want to do at this point. I don't think that's a short time frame, I think they have their hands full with FROZEN at the moment, but certainly down the line I think everybody's hoping that that will be a possibility.

E dopo Frozen, probabilmente Rapunzel avrà il suo adattamento a musical (e non sarà il musical della Cruise Line ma proprio il musical vero e proprio).

Da Twitter, Glen Slater accenna al musical di Rapunzel:

Alex Ngo @alexngomusic In risposta a @SlaterLyrics:

If you adapted Tangled into a full length musical, are there any moments you’d like to musicalize, that you haven’t yet done for the film or cruise version?

Glenn Slater @SlaterLyrics:

I'm gonna save this answer - don't want to spoil anything. smile.gif

Sarà sicuramente un bell'effetto scenografico all'inizio!
