'Beauty and the Beast' Prequel Series in the Works at Disney+ (Exclusive)

Stars Josh Gad and Luke Evans will reprise their roles from the 2017 feature for a limited series from 'Once Upon a Time' creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, with Gad also down as co-creator, writer and showrunner.
Gaston and LeFou are getting an origin story.

Streaming service Disney+ is teaming with Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz as well as stars Josh Gad and Luke Evans for a Beauty and the Beast prequel limited series to the 2017 feature film in which the latter pair starred.

The untitled limited series will be a six-episode musical event, with composer Alan Menken in talks to return as well. Sources say the project, which is currently in the early development stage, will take place well before the events of the film and also expand the Beauty and the Beast universe. No other stars from the film like Emma Watson and Dan Stevens are currently attached, though sources say there is a possibility that they could pop in for a guest spot.

Kitsis and Horowitz will serve as showrunners alongside Gad. Evans, Gad as well as Kitsis and Horowitz will all exec produce. Gad, Kitsis and Horowitz will all write scripts. ABC Signature Studios is the studio on the series. (It's worth noting that Kitsis and Horowitz briefly explored Beauty and the Beast during their time running ABC's Disney-themed drama Once Upon a Time, with Robert Carlyle's Rumpelstiltskin playing the Beast, while Emilie de Ravin was Belle.)

Sources say the Beauty and the Beast prequel stemmed from Kitsis and Horowitz's time working with Gad on the scrapped Muppets Live Another Day comedy series that was in the works for months at Disney+. The trio created the comedy, which was to be an eight-episode limited series that took place after the events of Muppets Take Manhattan. Conversations about the untitled Beauty and the Beast prequel began shortly after the trio decided to depart Muppets.

Reps for Disney+ and ABC Studios declined comment.

Released in 2017, the live-action Beauty and the Beast feature grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. This is the latest Disney intellectual property to get the TV series treatment for Disney+, joining a growing slate of Marvel and Star Wars titles as well as Pixar's Monsters, Inc., High School Musical, the stalled Lizzie McGuire, The Sandlot, Turner & Hooch and The Mighty Ducks, among others.

For their part, Kitsis and Horowitz are running Apple anthology Amazing Stories, which debuts Friday on the TV+ platform. The duo have a sizable overall deal at ABC Studios.

Alan Menken Crafting Music for Disney+ Beauty and the Beast Prequel

Alan Menken has had a historic relationship with Disney for over 30 years now and after developing music for the original Beauty and the Beast with Howard Ashman and for the 2017 remake with Tim Rice, he has revealed in a Young Artists of America video that he will be returning to craft music for the upcoming Disney+ prequel series centered on Gaston and LeFou. Menken’s chat with the performing arts organization, in which he also reveals he is currently working on music for the long-awaited Disenchanted, can be viewed in the player below! (Via Slash Film)

The series, which is being penned by Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, will be a six-episode limited series musical event with composer Alan Menken also in talks to return to craft music for the series. The project is currently in early development, with no other stars currently attached, but sources are reporting that there is a possibility they could appear in guest spots.

Horowitz and Kitsis are going to partner with Gad to serve as showrunners on the series, with the trio writing all six scripts and executive producing alongside Evans, while ABC Signature Studios is funding the project. Sources are reporting that the concept for the prequel came from Gad, Kitsis and Horowitz working together on the scrapped Muppets Live Another Day, an eight-episode limited series for the streaming service that would take place after the events of Muppets Take Manhattan. Shortly after the three left the series, discussions of this new project reportedly began.

This prequel series will mark the second extension from a live-action Disney remake for the streaming service as a spin-off film focusing on Billy Magnussen’s Prince Anders from last year’s Aladdin is currently in development, while reboots of The Mighty Ducks and Turner and Hooch are also in development.

Q: What can you tell us about working on that project?

Eddy Kitsis: Well, we can't say much just because it's just a pilot right now. There's nothing for sure about it like anything in Hollywood. But what we can tell you is we're doing a six-episode limited series that we're creating with Josh Gad and Luke Evans and Josh [Gad] will be reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou. And we're very lucky to have Alan Menken come and do the music. So that's what we're doing during this quarantine right now. It's writing that. What happens.

Solo a me nom frega niente di prequel e sequel?

Multiple New Songs Written For Disney+ Gaston and LeFou Series
DISNEY+

Back in March, reports surfaced that Disney was working on a prequel series to its 2017 billion dollar live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, that is centered on the villainous Gaston and his loyal companion LeFou played brilliantly by Luke Evans and Josh Gad.

A few weeks after the initial report, composer Alan Menken shared he was working on the series. Now, thanks to a tweet from Gad, we know multiple new songs have been written for the series.

This week I may or may not have heard a few new @AIMenken songs for something in the works, and I may or may not be quaking with excitement.

The untitled series for Disney+ is expected to be a six-episode musical. The series is still in the development stages but is expected to take place before the events of Beauty and the Beast and will expand upon the universe. Evans and Gad are the only actors from the film that are set to return. Still, Disney is expected to engage Emma Watson (Belle), Dan Stevens (Beast), Ewan McGregor (Lumiere), Ian McKellan (Cogsworth), and Emma Thompson (Mrs. Potts) for potential appearances.

Once Upon a Time creators, Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are set to serve as showrunners and producers on the project alongside Gad. ABC Signature Studios is the studio on the series, which is currently working on the Mighty Duck series. Conversations about the untitled Beauty and the Beast prequel began shortly after the trio decided to depart Muppets series they were developing, Muppets Live Another Day.

The Gaston and LeFou series is Disney’s second live-action spinoff series in development for Disney+, with the studio also working on the Aladdin spinoff centered on Prince Anders, played by Billy Magnussen (Game Night).

Dal sito https://collider.com/disney-plus-gaston-series-luke-evans-update/:

Luke Evans Gives an Update on That ‘Gaston’ Disney+ Show and Reveals How It Was Created

Gaston is one of the wildest and funnest Disney characters of all time — until he becomes (always was?) a horrific villain. In the original animated Beauty and the Beast, his swaggering song of accomplishments (sung by Richard White) became an instant, braggadocious classic. And in the 2017 live-action remake, Luke Evans inhabited the role and song with both swagger and a sense of pointed vulnerability (alongside his trusty Le Fou, played by Josh Gad, of course). Evans did such a good job, his Gaston is getting his own Disney+ spinoff. And Evans flexed his muscles and gave us a tantalizing update.

As part of Evans’ full interview with our own Christina Radish to promote The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, Evans explained how the show came about in the first place:

“Josh and I, even when we were working on Beauty and the Beast, I recall, as two human beings, we liked each other a lot. We made each other laugh, we respected each other’s talent, and we had a great time. Even then, we were talking about what we could do and wanting to find another project. We’ve been searching, for the last several years, projects and scripts and ideas and concepts.

In the back of our minds, we definitely had thoughts about revisiting Gaston and LeFou in a different story, obviously. So, when the idea really came to fruition and we got on board some incredible writers, and Josh, especially, had an incredible idea that, once it was born, it just flew itself. And when we pitched the idea to Disney+, they were very excited about it.

Now, we’re in fully fledged development. The second and third episodes have been written and we’ve heard some of the music by Alan Menken. We’re just so honored to have him on board, writing the music, which is extraordinary, in itself. We feel so lucky to have this talented group of people creating a story about two much loved and much hated characters, but that’s the excitement. There are a lot of questions about, where we will start? What we will tell? Who are these people? When you visit them, where will they be? So, it’s going to be a really fun experience. Me and Josh are literally vibrating with excitement to shoot it.

Wow, wow, wow! First of all: Evans and Gad’s friendship sounds so pure I could scream. Second of all: Three episodes have been written, and they have Alan Menken songs. And third of all: “Literally vibrating with excitement”? Now so am I!

When pressed further, Evans simply could not spoil any forthcoming details, except for this: “No human being is one layer. There are many, many chapters to our lives, and they all inform the character and who we are. There’s a lot of intrigue, as to who these people might have been, and how they became who they were. But you’ll just have to wait to see. I’m not going to spoil it for you.” An interesting comment, given how one-dimensional someone could play Gaston. All will be revealed when the show eventually hits Disney+.

Alan Menken Accidentally Reveals the Title of the Disney+ Gaston Show

In an interview with Variety following the Daytime Emmy win that officially turned him into an EGOT king, composer (and living legend) Alan Menken let slip the name of the new Disney+ live-action series that he’s working on with Luke Evans and Josh Gad that is set in the same universe as the $1 billion grossing Beauty and the Beast.

This new musical series, which hasn’t formally begun production, comes from Gad and co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, is described by Menken as “a new Beauty and the Beast prequel.” And it’s got an appropriately Beauty and the Beast-y title: Little Town. (Menken calls it The Little Town, but we’ve confirmed that it’s simply Little Town.)

Obviously, the title is a reference to the opening musical number in Beauty and the Beast, “Belle,” which begins:

Little town

It’s a quiet village

Every day

Like the one before

Little town

Full of little people

Waking up to say

While it’s unclear who is providing the lyrics to Menken’s musical score, it’s nice that the title of the show is a nod to Howard Ashman, Beauty and the Beast’s lyricist who sadly passed away from complications related to AIDS before the movie even debuted. Ashman’s story is brought to beautiful life next week with the Disney+ original documentary Howard, which has tons of great, sometimes heartbreaking anecdotes from the making of the original Beauty and the Beast animated classic.

Hopefully production on Little Town can begin once everything is back up and running again. We can’t wait to see what Menken (and Gad and Kitsis and Horowitz) are cooking up with this Gaston-and-LeFou-show. Gad and Evans’ portrayals of the famous Beauty and the Beast characters were an obvious highlight of the live-action remake.

Starring Luke Evans and Josh Gad in the roles they made famous in the hit live action feature film, the music, romance, comedy and adventure of the Beauty and the Beast universe continues in this prequel that explores the kingdom in the years before the Beast and Belle’s epic romance. We will witness the destinies of many familiar characters take shape as they cross paths with new characters -- including an unconventional and modern take on the traditional “Disney Princess” – as they experience their own exciting epic adventures and romances, all set to an original soundtrack from Academy Award winning composer Alan Menken.

Zut alors! Beauty and the Beast live-action prequel series officially coming to Disney+

Disney+ is ready for audiences to be their guest once again.

On Thursday during a presentation for investors, Disney confirmed that they are officially going to be bringing a Beauty and the Beast prequel to the streaming platform. The live-action series will reunite Josh Gad and Luke Evans in their roles as Lefou and Gaston from the 2017 live-action feature film adaptation of the Disney classic.

Continuing the legacy of the 1991 animated film, composer Alan Menken is also returning to write new music for the series.

The show, which was previously said to be early in development, will expand the world of Beauty and the Beast to tell tales of the misadventures of Lefou and Gaston prior to the events of the film. Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are writing what has been described as a six-episode musical event.

Evans, Gad, Kitsis, and Horowitz will executive produce, while Gad, Kitsis, and Horowitz write the scripts.

In the 2017 feature film, Gad portrayed Lefou as a gay man, wrestling with his attraction to his crony Gaston and even offering up what director Bill Condon described as "an exclusively gay moment." It seems possible the series could explore that aspect of the character more, but further plot details are scarce.

The series joins a slate of Disney+ originals announced during the Thursday presentation.

When we spoke for the second season of The Alienist, you were in full-fledged development on the Gaston and LeFou series. You said that there had been a second and third script written and they you were hearing some of the music. How much further along are things now? Do you know when you’re actually going to start production on that?

EVANS: Yes, I do, but I’m sworn to secrecy. We are not allowed to talk about it, but it’s progressing very well. There have been some very exciting decisions made recently. Josh [Gad] and I speak on a regular basis. Disney is very excited about it. Everybody is excited about it. I think it’ll be a very entertaining journey through the past story of these characters, and also there will be many new characters that you’ve never met before, which is very exciting. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST PREQUEL SERIES CASTING AN INTRIGUING SUPPORTING CHARACTER: EXCLUSIVE

We at The Illuminerdi are fortunate to have some exciting information for the Beauty and the Beast Disney+ series, which we are happy to share with you now!

Disney is going fully into the realm of live-action remakes, which have increased in volume over the last few years and will only continue in that direction. This will come not only in the form of big-screen movies, but also in the streaming world on the Disney+ service.

One example of this is coming in the new Disney+ series spinning off from 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, which generated nearly $1.3 billion at the global box office. Harry Potter star Emma Watson shined as the classic princess Belle, while Dan Stevens embodied the “horrible, monstrous Beast” for most of the movie, before turning back into Prince Adam.

The Disney+ show will center around Luke Evans’ Gaston and Josh Gad’s LeFou and will serve as a prequel to the events of the classic animated movie that was adapted into a live-action adventure in 2017. While it’s unclear what the plot for this series will hold, it’s clear that the professionals involved are thrilled and passionate about bringing it to the streaming world on Disney+.

Our sources tell us the Beauty and the Beast prequel series has a casting call out for a character named Tilly, who is a young Black woman portrayed at about 19 years old. The new character is intended to be a series regular, she is said to have great poise, an adventurous streak, and some mischief in her eyes as she tries to “write her own story.” The role also requires singing.

Additionally, the show is looking to begin filming around September of 2021 in the UK. No specific start or end date was offered.

While it’s tough to pin down how Tilly figures into either Gaston or LeFou’s story, she seems to be set to play a major role alongside them. She could potential be a love interest for Gaston before Belle arrives, or even a friend of both leads, but it will be exciting to find out more details nonetheless.

Additionally, knowing the start date for filming is an exciting revelation in terms of the production timeline. There are still no details for when the series will release, but knowing that things are kicking off in four to five months should bring some massive hype for this prequel coming to life.

Liesl Tommy To Direct ‘Little Town’ Limited Series for Disney+

A director has signed on for the 8-episode prequel series revolving around Gaston and LeFou for Disney+.

The limited series, tentatively called Little Town, will be directed by Liesl Tommy, who is making her feature directional debut with the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic Respect. Over the course of her career, Tommy has worked extensively on stage productions, frequently directing plays that feature new twists on classic stories. For The Walt Disney Company, she directed a stage version of Frozen at the Hyperion Theater in Disneyland. Her other directorial work includes helming shows at a plethora of major theatres including the La Jolly Playhouse, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and Yale Repertory Theatre- to name just a few.

In recent years, Tommy has also directed episodes of major television productions. Most notably, she directed 2019 episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones (Netflix) and The Walking Dead (AMC).

Josh Gad, who reprises his role as LeFou in the series, will be working as a co-writer alongside fellow creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Last year, Gad confirmed in a Tweet that Beauty and the Beast composer Alan Menken will be writing new songs for the series.

At this point, the only confirmed stars for the show are Luke Evans and Josh Gad as Gaston and LeFou, respectively. However, there is a chance that Emma Watson will appear in the series as well, though most likely as a cameo appearance.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST SPIN-OFF: BRIANA MIDDLETON TO JOIN NEW DISNEY PLUS SERIES: EXCLUSIVE

Actress Briana Middleton joins the cast of the upcoming Disney+ spin-off of Beauty and the Beast.

Disney is currently preparing for a huge stream of shows to come out on Disney+ in the coming years from Marvel, Star Wars, and the Disney brand as a whole. This includes highly-anticipated spin-offs from recent major theatrical releases, one of those being the Beauty and the Beast prequel series centered around Gaston and Lefou.

After 2017’s Beauty and the Beast grossed over $1.3 billion at the global box-office, Disney found itself with an avenue to explore the mystical world even further with Luke Evans and Josh Gad. The two displayed a special bond on screen together as the classic villain and sidekick, and it will be exciting to learn more about their story before Belle or the Beast came into their lives.

While it’s unclear exactly what the plot of this show will focus on, it will be exciting to find out how the classic duo develops into the men that came into the original Disney animated movie from 1991.

BRIANA MIDDLETON TO JOIN BEAUTY AND THE BEAST PREQUEL

In late April, we had the opportunity to share that Disney was in the process of casting for a role with the codename “Tilly,” a 19-year-old Black woman in a regular role on the show. Now, we are excited to share news concerning who has been cast in the role.

Our sources have notified us that Briana Middleton has been cast in the role of Tilly in the Beauty and the Beast prequel series for Disney+. There has been no confirmation from Middleton or her representatives.

While Briana Middleton’s resume isn’t too extensive, this will give her a chance to shine under the bright spotlight of Disney’s live-action remakes from the classic animated movies.

Having first started acting in 2015, she’s mostly appeared in shorts before taking on bigger projects like this year’s The Tender Bar. This role in the Beauty and the Beast prequel should help put her front and center, hopefully kickstarting a long run for her in big Hollywood entries like this one.

With filming starting in only three months, there should be plenty of other news releases concerning casting an production for this show in the coming weeks. We at The Illuminerdi hope to share more updates with you as they become available!

The Beauty and the Beast prequel series is set to begin filming in the UK in Fall 2021. Are you excited for the new series coming to Disney+? How do you think Briana Middleton’s Tilly will figure into the story? What do you think the show will be about? Let us know all of your thoughts in the comment section below or over on our social media!

‘Beauty and the Beast’ Prequel Series Greenlighted By Disney+; Briana Middleton Joins Josh Gad & Luke Evans

The long-gestating Gaston & LeFou Beauty and the Beast prequel series is a go. Disney+ has officially greenlighted Beauty and the Best (working title), an eight-episode limited musical series, a prequel to the 2017 live-action film. The movie’s Luke Evans and Josh Gad are reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou (Louie) in the series, joined by newcomer Briana Middleton (The Tender Bar) as the female lead, Louie’s stepsister, Tilly.

Beauty and the Beast was developed and written by Gad and Once Upon a Time creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, with the trio serving as executive producers/co-showrunners.

Set in the iconic kingdom of Beauty and the Beast years before the Beast and Belle’s epic romance, the series will follow Gaston (Evans) and LeFou (Gad) as they set off with LeFou’s step-sister, Tilly (Middleton), after a surprising revelation from her past comes to light, sending the unlikely trio off on an unexpected journey filled with romance, comedy, and adventure. While the mysteries of the past are uncovered and the dangers of the present grow, old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbors many secrets.

Tony Award-nominated director Liesl Tommy (Eclipsed) will direct the first episode.

EGOT Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who scored both the 1991 and 2017 Beauty and the Beast movies, is writing the soundtrack of the series, with lyrics for the first episode by Oscar-nominee Glenn Slater (Tangled). Tommy and Menken are also executive producing, with Evans producing.

Beauty and the Beast is from Disney Branded Television and ABC Signature. Production will begin in spring 2022.

“For anyone who’s ever wondered how a brute like Gaston and a goof like LeFou could have ever become friends and partners, or how a mystical enchantress came to cast that fateful spell on the prince-turned-beast, this series will finally provide those answers…and provoke a whole new set of questions,” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Branded Television.

The project, which originated at ABC Signature, comes as Disney marks the 30th anniversary of the Beauty and the Beast animated 1991 classic.

“There are few more precious gems in the Disney library than this iconic franchise, and this prequel is both a love letter to what’s come before and its own spectacular adventure,” said Jonnie Davis, president, ABC Signature. “Josh, Eddy and Adam’s vision gives us a window into the origin of Luke’s Gaston and Josh’s LeFou with the twist of a new partner in crime—Tilly, played by the luminous Briana Middleton. This dream team would not be complete without the genius Alan Menken returning to write even more glorious music for the franchise he helped create. We’re so grateful to Gary, Ayo, Michael and everyone at Disney Branded Television and Disney+ for their unwavering support. We cannot wait to start shooting.”

Middleton, member of UNCSA’s Class of 2022, has been rising fast. She will be making her feature film debut in Amazon Studios’ upcoming George Clooney-directed The Tender Bar, based on the memoir by Pulitzer Prize-winning Writer J.R. Moehringer, and is currently shooting The Last Will and Testament of Charles Abernathy for Netflix. She is repped by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

Evans is about to start filming the lead in Mark Boal’s new Apple series Echo 3 and has a lead role in Hulu’s upcoming limited series Nine Perfect Strangers.”He is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content and United Agents.

Gad, whose recent credits include starring roles in Avenue 5, Marshall and Central Park, is currently in production on Peacock series Wolf Like Me. He is repped by WME and Sugar23.

The first Black woman ever nominated for a Best Direction of a Play Tony, Tommy is making her feature directorial debut with the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect. Tommy’s past work includes theatrical productions of Frozen and Les Mis that shifted the casting of each story, centering them around people of color.

“For three decades, this tale as old as time has inspired generations of fans around the world,” said Michael Paull, president, Disney+ and ESPN+. “We can’t wait to welcome our guests back to the magical and musical world of Beauty and the Beast for an all new chapter with LeFou, Gaston, and a fantastic new cast of characters.”

Josh Gad Offers an Update on the 'Beauty and the Beast' Prequel Series: "One of the Most Ambitious Projects I've Ever Been a Part Of"

He also tells Collider when filming is expected to start

It's a tale as old as time: sooner or later, Disney will find a way of bringing some of its most iconic animated properties to the screen again in live-action. There have been several classic movies retold in the last several years, from Cinderella to Aladdin. It's almost hard to believe that Beauty and the Beast initially premiered back in 2017, but looking ahead, Disney clearly has plans for that little town and quiet village: a spinoff prequel series featuring Josh Gad and Luke Evans has officially been greenlit to air on the streaming arm of Disney+.

When Collider had the chance to catch up with Gad in promotion of Season 2 of Central Park, we had to ask him about the plan for the show and what fans have to look forward to. "We're doing eight episodes," Gad shared, before going on to say that filming should begin early next year and that scripts are in the process of being finished. The actor, who also serves as a co-executive producer and writer on the series, almost couldn't contain his own excitement in telling us about the upcoming series.

"I can tell you right now that it is one of the most ambitious projects I've ever been a part of. Luke and I are so excited about bringing these characters back to life alongside a brilliant and unique new talent in Briana Middleton playing this incredible new character named Tilly. Liesl Tommy, who's our director, is planning to do some unbelievably ambitious things with this series as well as our showrunners, Adam [Horowitz] and Eddie [Kitsis], who are really, really, really going places I think audiences are not necessarily ready for. I cannot be more excited about this show. I think it's going to be enormously special."

In addition to Evans and Gad, longtime Disney composer Alan Menken also returns to work on this new prequel series, which will reportedly be called Little Town (although that title has not officially been confirmed). Stay tuned for more from our interview with Gad.

Josh Gad Addresses LeFou’s Sexuality on Disney Plus’ ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Prequel Series: ‘Expect the Unexpected’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”

Queer Disney fans raised a rainbow flag in 2017 when it was revealed that in the Bill Condon-directed live-action adaptation of the animated hit “Beauty and the Beast,” LeFou — played by Josh Gad — was gay. Now the big question is, will LeFou be gay in the upcoming “Beauty and the Beast” Disney Plus series? That project revolves around the friendship between LeFou and Gaston (Luke Evans). More specifically, because it’s a prequel, will a storyline include LeFou’s coming-out journey?

“You’re going to have to tune in when this show airs to see what we’re working up, but in the process of working on it, we’re asking ourselves every relevant question about these characters and endeavoring to do right by them and by this world,” Gad says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “I think that we have origin stories here that are unbelievably exciting because they’re unexpected. And I think ‘expect the unexpected’ is all I can really say. And not just with regard to LeFou and Gaston but to a lot of the new characters that we’re introducing.”

Gad cracked that he has to get fit before playing LeFou again after seeing Evans’ thirst-trap photos on Instagram: “It requires me to get in the gym fairly soon because I’ve seen pictures of my co-star online. And let’s just say it ain’t great what I’m working with in terms of the most shredded man in show business.”

I caught up with Gad over Zoom from his trailer on the Australia set of “Wolf Like Me,” his and Isla Fisher‘s upcoming romantic comedy series from Peacock.

The second season of “Central Park,” Gad’s animated musical series on Apple TV Plus, premiered last month. He’s currently working on the third season. “There are people that I dream of having on the show at some point, like Lin-Manuel Miranda,” he says. “I would love for Lin to write or voice a character. Ben Platt is somebody that I would love to come on. I just got a text from Cynthia Erivo who wanted to do an episode. I’m like, ‘Anything you want to do!’”

While Gad says he thought it would be hard to sell an animated musical series, he says Apple wasn’t the only offer they received. Hulu and Netflix also made a play for the show. “The reason we actually ended up going to Apple — all of them would have been amazing partners — was fundamentally we thought it was an amazing opportunity to help define a new service, as opposed to being one of many,” he says.

Speaking of musicals, Gad also tells me that he and Andrew Rannells were workshopping “Gutenberg! The Musical!” in Los Angeles for a run on Broadway, but their plans were derailed because of the pandemic. It centers around two writers trying to get financial backing for their musical about the invention of the printing press. The original off-Broadway production, developed by the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, ran for a little over a year before closing in 2007. Gad and Rannells have also spoken about staring in a revival of “The Producers.” “I’ve even toyed with the idea of going back into ‘The Book of Mormon’ for a stint,” says Gad of the show that earned him a Tony nomination.

Ecco quello che dice:

Q: You get to reprise your role [as Gaston] for the upcoming limited series. What can you tell us about the show?

Luke Evans: I keep reminding myself that next year I'm going back to work on playing a character that was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my career in a brand new story which predates the movie where you meet Gaston and LeFou many years before and you meet all these new characters which are just so cleverly written into the storyline. It's not what you're going to expect. That's what is the most exciting part. You're going to meet new people, you're going to meet new characters who are interwoven into our storylines and interwoven into the legacy of the film. You won't be able to watch just one episode. We have the crème de la crème involved in making this show. That's what's really special. I couldn't talk about this adventure without mentioning the incredible Alan Menken who is writing the music to each episode. Josh [Gad] and I have already heard several of the songs and you'll be humming them before the end of each episode. They're exactly what we hoped and wished for and Alan [Menken] has obviously delivered in bucketloads.

o gireranno alcune sequenze a Pinewood e altre in Canada o a Los Angeles/New York, ecc... vedremo...

Beauty and the Beast Prequel Series Aims to Shoot This Spring

Back in 2017, director Bill Condon brought to life the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast, which earned enough excitement and acclaim to inspire an upcoming prequel series on Disney+ focusing on Gaston and LeFou. Since the project got greenlit last summer, most details about the project have been kept under wraps, with LeFou actor Josh Gad recently confirming that the project aims to start shooting in the coming months. So long as production moves forward as scheduled, we could potentially expect the series to debut sometime in early 2023 on the streamer, with it also being possible that the coronavirus pandemic could slow or postpone the project's development.

"We're still planning on shooting this spring and the scripts are incredible, the music is unbelievable, all-new songs by Alan Menken, we're casting now," Gad confirmed with ComicBook.com while promoting his new Peacock series Wolf Like Me.

Ahead of the premiere of Beauty and the Beast, fans were excited that Condon confirmed this take on LeFou was gay and his infatuation with Gaston was a bit more than platonic, though the actual film failed to directly address these details about his identity. Gad did, however, previously confirm that the upcoming prequel series aims to deal with those elements of the character a bit more explicitly.

"You're going to have to tune in when this show airs to see what we're working up, but in the process of working on it, we're asking ourselves every relevant question about these characters and endeavoring to do right by them and by this world," Gad confirmed to Variety. "I think that we have origin stories here that are unbelievably exciting because they're unexpected. And I think 'expect the unexpected' is all I can really say. And not just with regard to LeFou and Gaston but to a lot of the new characters that we're introducing."

As we wait for more details on the prequel series, fans can see Gad in Wolf Like Me.

Created and written by Abe Forsythe, Wolf Like Me is described, "Everyone brings their own set of baggage to a new relationship. Gary (Josh Gad) and Mary (Isla Fisher) are no different. Gary is an emotional wreck and struggles to provide for his daughter since the death of his wife. Mary has a secret she can't bring herself to share with anyone. The universe brought these two together for a reason, they just need to keep following the signs."

Stay tuned for details on the Beauty and the Beast prequel series. Wolf Like Me premieres on Peacock on January 13th.

Inviato da: Under the sea il 21/1/2022, 10:06

Inviato da: Under the sea il 21/1/2022, 13:10

Original ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Script Included Sequel Tease for Luke Evans’ Gaston

Screenwriters, producer tell all at TheWrap Awards Screening Series

An original draft of Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” included a window for a sequel to the worldwide billion-dollar box office hit.

The screenwriters and producer of the lush Bill Condon fairytale said an earlier script did not deal Luke Evans’ homme fatale Gaston the grim fate he got — but left the door open for another film.

“The idea was not that he died in the end, but the enchantress would come and he would be cursed as the new beast,” Evan Spiliotopoulos, who along with Stephen Chbosky wrote the script, said at a Q&A for TheWrap’s Awards Screening Series in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The enchantress would be the same one who turned Dan Stevens’ elitist, shallow prince into a cloven-hoofed monster for not giving her shelter in his humongous palace during a storm.

Spiliotopoulos said talks went very far for Evans’ character to “run off into the world as the new beast, whether to be redeemed or come back as a villain.”

The studio reversed course on the decision in the “eleventh hour,” Spiliotopoulos said, to stick with the more traditional story.

Here are two other “Beauty and the Beast” secret we learned:

In the new version, Gaston Suffers From PTSD

Spiliotopoulos anchored his characters in a deep historical reality (the animated classic wasn’t that far off either, considering). “Beast” takes place at the turn of the 19th Century, Spiliotopoulos said, and Evans’ soldier Gaston has just returned from battle a different man than when he left.

“This is the end of the 100 years war, so Gaston was a soldier. Female illiteracy is at 80 percent, so Belle is teaching girls to read. Once you ground them and make them part of a historical context it grounds it in reality,” Spiliotopoulos said.

“For a Disney villain that’s pretty high brow,” chimed in Chbosky, who wrote a second draft.

Belle Entered the 21st Century Thanks to Daughter-Dad Movie Nights

Chbosky had been off the grid dealing with a family medical issue for eight months when the call came to write for the project.

“When I took on the project, my wife’s father had a stroke and went to New Jersey to get him on his feet. He’s great now, which is great, but I was off the gird for eight months not really working. In those eight months, I watched all these princess moves with my daughter,” he said.

“When I saw them through her eyes and her experience, it became very profound and personal to me. I realized how powerful these role models were, how she wanted to be like Belle and dress like Ariel,” he continued.

Chbosky was most proud of evolving Belle’s instincts.

“I tried to give my daughter advice. If a beast kidnaps you, maybe don’t cry. Try to escape. Also something David and Bill Condon let me do, I so wanted her to escape by ripping up a dress [to use as a rope],” he said.

“Beauty and the Beast” is proving an awards player this year, with four Critic’s Choice Award nominations. Two original songs from the film, “Evermore” and Celine Dion’s “How Does a Moment Last Forever,” are also on the shortlist in the Best Original Song Oscar race.

The Live Action Beauty And The Beast Almost Got A Sequel, Here's What It Would Have Been About

Disney's Beauty and the Beast is the number one highest-grossing film of the year, both foreign and domestic, although I imagine it will have to settle for number two before long. The live-action remake of Disney's animated classic was a hit with audiences and critics alike, and continued the hot streak that really kicked off with Cinderella. So it would come as a surprise to no one if Disney was planning a sequel to the tale as old as time, and it turns out, that was originally the plan. We now know that the end of Beauty and the Beast was originally different and was intended to lay the groundwork for a follow-up, which would have focused on that villainous consumer of eggs, Gaston. As Beauty and the Beast screenwriter, Evan Spiliotopoulos explained.

The idea was not that he died in the end, but the enchantress would come and he would be cursed as the new beast.

It turns out that this idea went pretty far, with the intention of having Luke Evans' new beast running off into the world for his own chance at redemption. The same enchantress who cursed Dan Stevens' Beast would have again taught a harsh lesson to someone in need of it. However, according to The Wrap, Disney changed course at the eleventh hour and decided to stick with the more traditional telling in line with the 1991 animated classic. This certainly would have been a stark difference from the ending we got, and as it stands now, the enchantress would have to perform some resurrection before using the transfiguration spell on Gaston.

While this is a neat idea, I don't know that it would have worked. While Luke Evans' portrayal of Gaston is a highlight of the film, I don't know that audiences would have found him redeemable. His backward views, sexism and maliciousness are far more ingrained character traits than the Prince's shallowness and vanity. Plus how do you tell the story of Gaston trying to break the spell in a way that doesn't follow the same beats. This is where it is tricky to find the balance between a cash grab and taking creative chances. One of the criticisms of Disney's live-action remakes, especially Beauty and the Beast, is that they play it too safe. They hew too close to the warm and fuzzy sameness that audiences grew up with without taking chances. While this Gaston twist may have been an interesting departure from the animated film, it sounds like it would have been an unnecessary attempt to cash in on a sequel while basically telling the same story.

It appears that for now, there are no plans for a sequel to Beauty and the Beast, but there are other ways Disney could go should it choose to pursue one. Besides, Disney already has a lot on its plate with Christopher Robin hitting next year and a whole slew of remakes coming in 2019. You can check out all of Disney's upcoming live action remakes of its animated classics in our guide. Could Beauty And The Beast’s Disney+ Prequel Renew Interest In A Sequel? Here’s What Dan Stevens Says

You can never tell which Disney live-action remakes are going to land and which ones are going to flop. However, even with all the confidence in the world that 2017’s Beauty and The Beast would find itself in the former category, no one could have predicted how massive it would eventually become. It’s gotten to the point where a Disney+ prequel series is in the works, and now fans are probably wondering: could this new series spark a renewed interest in a follow-up movie? The Beast himself, actor Dan Stevens, certainly has some thoughts on the subject.

I was lucky enough to ask Mr. Stevens about this subject when we sat down to talk about his latest film I’m Your Man. Playing a humanoid robot named Tom, this new character in Dan Stevens’ insanely impressive resume is a world away from the formerly cursed Disney prince. Between his own immense pride for partaking in the project and all of the talk surrounding Luke Evans and Josh Gad’s Disney+ prequel Little Town, it’s hard not to ask questions. In his answer about a hypothetical Beauty and the Beast sequel, Stevens provided the following musings:

"Well, I...who knows? I think anything’s possible, with that kind of news. So yeah, we’ll just have to see".

The concept of a sequel to Beauty and the Beast’s flesh and blood retelling isn’t something that’s come out of the blue. The original ending to the 2017 remake would have actually seen Gaston cursed by the same enchantress that turned Dan Stevens into his hairier self. Though even if that idea is 100% scrapped, Emma Watson has provided even more ideas for a hypothetical Beauty and the Beast 2, which could focus on how the now-human Beast deals with his second chance at life, as well as Belle’s potential career as a schoolteacher. Ideas are not in short supply, should Disney want to wave its wand.

What’s even more interesting is the fact that Beauty and the Beast was budgeted, on the high end, at an estimated $255 million. Now granted, Disney might be a little shy to fork over that much cash to a sequel. That being said, in light of $1.26 billion the first film raked in during its box office run, and Dan Stevens’ fond memories of the project, you’d think there would be some sort of movement four years later.

The best hope for Beauty and the Beast’s potential sequel almost totally lies with how Little Town performs on Disney+. Though Dan Stevens certainly hasn’t written off the prospect of getting back into his beastly habits. So the future might truly bring anything, if the ideas are flowing, and the higher ups see the world still under the spell of that tale as old as time.

For the moment, the good news is that you can see Dan Stevens winning hearts through the rumba and the German language when I’m Your Man opens in theaters on September 24. Which is also a great reminder that the next movie you fall in love with might be on the 2021 release schedule right this very moment. And if you want to relive the magic of Beauty and the Beast, in either of its forms, check out The Disney Bundle, which grants you access to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for one convenient subscription.

‘Beauty And The Beast’: Rita Ora Joins Disney+ Prequel Series

British pop star Rita Ora is joining Disney+’s Beauty and the Beast prequel series.

Ora, who is best known for pop hits such as Your Song and Anywhere, will play a fugitive with surprising abilities who carries with her a secret that could potentially affect an entire kingdom in the eight-episode limited musical series.

A regular fixture on British musical reality series, Ora has previously starred in Fifty Shades of Grey as well as starring as the Artful Dodger in 2021 feature film Twist.

She joins Luke Evans and Josh Gad, who are reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou. Briana Middleton, Fra Fee and Jelani Alladin also star.

Tommy, Menken and Evans are also executive producing.

Beauty and the Beast is from Disney Branded Television and ABC Signature. Production will begin in spring 2022.

EXCLUSIVE: Sharon D. Clarke Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Prequel Series

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen Fra Fee, Jellani Alladin, and – most recently – Rita Ora join the cast of the upcoming Beauty and the Beast prequel over at Disney+. Today, we can exclusively confirm yet another actor’s involvement with the project.

Thanks to sources close to The DisInsider, we now know that English actress and singer Sharon D. Clarke will also appear in the series.

She’ll play a series regular named Claire Lafayette. Described as a regal woman, she is the overprotective matriarch of the noble Lafayette family. Despite living life as an elite aristocrat, and wanting nothing but a stable life for her children, she has a secret. Lafayette was once a swashbuckling adventurer. At some point, her past comes back to thrust her into the series’ action.

Clarke may not be a household name, but she has a distinguished career with roles spanning the screen and stage. She’s been awarded the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award numerous times, and most recently appeared on Doctor Who.

Now, in addition to Sharon D. Clarke’s casting, we can also confirm that the series will finally begin production next week. It’s expected to continue into the Spring.

In the series, Luke Evans and Josh Gad will return to reprise their roles of Gaston and LeFou respectively, with newcomer Briana Middleton also attached a new lead character named Tilly. It is unknown if other characters from 2017’s billion-dollar hit Beauty and the Beast will make an appearance in the series.

After a shocking revelation from Tilly’s past arises, she, Gaston, and LeFou will set off on the adventure of a lifetime that will reunite them with old friends and new rivals, all while revealing many mysteries and secrets their kingdom has been harboring for years.

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who previously created and oversaw the wildly popular ABC series Once Upon A Time, will serve as show-runners of this series alongside Josh Gad. They will also contribute as writers.

Kitsis, Horowitz, and Gad will all also executively produce the series with the legendary Alan Menken. Unsurprisingly, Menken will also provide the music for the series. Liesl Tommy (RESPECT) will also executively produce, but most importantly she’ll direct the series – as we previously reported – too.

Beauty and the Beast’ Prequel Series Put on Hold at Disney+

A delay with creative elements and scheduling challenges has forced the streamer to delay the feature film spinoff starring Josh Gad and Luke Evans.

Beauty and the Beast’s TV spinoff has hit a speed bump.

Disney+ has put its musical prequel spinoff from its 2017 feature film on hold amid delays with creative elements and scheduling challenges with its cast. Sources close to the streamer say the show will eventually be made though it’s unclear if the cast, including film stars Josh Gad and Luke Evans, will be available when (and if) that comes to pass.

As THR exclusively reported in March 2020, the project was developed as a six-episode series that would feature Gad and Evans reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou, respectively, in an origin story for the beloved characters. The show was picked up to series with an eight-episode order in June 2021 with Briana Middleton (The Tender Bar) cast as LeFou’s stepsister, Tilly.

Production on the show was set to begin this spring but pushed to the summer in Europe in a bid to film in beautiful weather. Sources note that some creative elements were not far enough along to accommodate that timeline. Scheduling challenges with the cast also are a factor as some talent had hard outs for other projects beginning in August. With the window of availability shrinking, Disney+ has opted to put the series on hold for the time being. The pandemic, it’s worth noting, has made scheduling a considerable challenge as actors, writers, directors and factors like soundstage and location availability was turned upside down following the industry-wide production shutdown in 2020.

Still, Disney decided against postponing the current timeline because of weather constraints in the U.K. as sources note few wanted the cheery musical to be filmed in gloomy weather.

The news comes days after Disney+ announced that British pop star Rita Ora was set to join the cast of the series, which also was to feature Fra Fee and Jelani Alladin. It’s unclear if the current cast will be able to return when and if a new timeline opens up.

Gad, who was set to serve as showrunner alongside Once Upon a Time creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, has a packed schedule with a central voice role in Apple’s animated comedy Central Park and stars in Peacock’s Wolf Like Me. Evans, who next appears in the live-action Pinocchio for Disney, has Apple’s Echo 3 lined up, among other projects.

Gad, Kitsis, Horowitz and EGOT-winner Alan Menken were all signed on to exec produce the Beauty and the Beast prequel, with the latter set to compose the soundtrack. Liesl Tommy (Eclipsed, Respect) was attached to direct the pilot. Evans was to be credited as an exec producer. Gad, Kitsis and Horowitz were all involved in writing the scripts. ABC Signature is the studio.

Kitsis and Horowitz remain based at ABC Signature with a sizable overall deal. The Beauty and the Beast prequel stemmed from Kitsis and Horowitz’s time working with Gad on the scrapped Muppets Live Another Day comedy series that was in the works for months at Disney+. The trio created the project, which was to be an eight-episode limited series that took place after the events of Muppets Take Manhattan. Conversations about the untitled Beauty and the Beast prequel began shortly after the trio decided to depart Muppets.

All told, Kitsis and Horowitz have had a rough go of it in recent months with their Muppets take at Disney+ and Apple’s Amazing Stories order shrinking from 10 episodes to five.

Disney+ has had its fair share of creative stumbles since its launch a couple years ago, with Muppets as well as fairy tale themed drama Book of Enchantment and the Lizzie McGuire revival all imploding before coming to fruition.

Released in 2017, the live-action Beauty and the Beast feature grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. It was slated to become the latest Disney intellectual property to get the TV series treatment at the streamer, joining a growing slate of Marvel and Star Wars titles as well as Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., High School Musical, National Treasure, The Santa Clause, Willow, Swiss Family Robinson, Percy Jackson, The Sandlot, Turner & Hooch and The Mighty Ducks, among others.

Ecco cosa dichiara sui social The Disinsider:

Sadly, the upcoming Gaston and Lefou Beauty and the Beast prequel series will not move forward at Disney+, Deadline has learned. The decision comes as the lead cast of the eight-episode series had been assembled ahead of the planned summer 2022 shoot in the U.K. Per the site, the series was canceled due to creative reasons, with the scripts not coming together in the direction expected for the offshoot and the creation of original music running behind schedule.....

Luke Evans says Beauty and the Beast spin-off series 'is gonna happen': 'It's just on hold'

"We just wanna make sure that it is absolutely the best it can be, and if that means we just have to wait a little longer to finesse certain pieces of it, then that's what we're going to do because this is a very important legacy."

Once upon a time, Luke Evans and Josh Gad had plans to reprise their Disney roles from the live-action Beauty and the Beast for a Gaston- and LeFou-centric spin-off series on Disney+. Then, abruptly at the start of the year, the project was indefinitely put on hold.

Evans, sitting down over Zoom with EW for his new film Pinocchio, promises the series will happen.

"It's been put on hold. We just wanna make sure that it is absolutely the best it can be, and if that means we just have to wait a little longer to finesse certain pieces of it, then that's what we're going to do because this is a very important legacy," the actor from Nine Perfect Strangers and The Alienist says. "We want to honor these characters with the best story we can possibly deliver. It's just on hold. It is gonna happen. We're very excited about it. At some point in the near future, it will happen."

Evans says he and Gad talk all the time. They had always wanted to work together, and then when Beauty and the Beast, the film, happened, they were looking for something else to partner on. "We came up with the idea of, what would it be like to delve into the past of Gaston and LeFou and how they met and who they were and why they became the people that we meet in the movie that we all know and love? That opened up several cans of worms," Evans recalls. "To navigate a story of those two people and also new characters, and then bring them right up to the moment where you meet them in the movie has been a thrilling experience. There's a lot of ways it could go. So that's where we have been so far and where we hopefully will go to in the future."

The Emma Watson-led Beauty and the Beast of 2017 made waves when it was revealed that Gad's LeFou was gay in the film, though many critics, including the LGBTQ community at large, felt that element had been buried. Even Gad says he felt the moment didn't go far enough. When asked if this element is something he hopes will be explored in the prequel series, Evans, who is openly gay, says, "Who knows? I'm not sure."

"There's so many things about these two characters that we don't really know, about their origin stories," he notes. "Were they always these creatures or were they different? It's a bit like, no one's born bad. Things happen, you make wrong decisions, or you choose to make a decision that affects the rest of your life. I think that was where we were going with the idea and concept. So I hope one day soon we will be able to deliver that story for you guys."

For now, Evans can be seen on screen in another Disney production as the Coachman in Pinocchio. He was surprised to get the call from director Robert Zemeckis about joining the new film. He thought Beauty and the Beast was a one-and-done job with the Mouse House.

"I feel like I'm almost unrecognizable in the character, and that was part of the fun of it," he says, noting the hour and 20 minutes it took to transform into the Coachman each time, between the fake teeth, makeup, wigs, and costumes.

"It's the cocktail of creatives and the concept that I thought was brilliant," Evans continues. "Robert Zemeckis at the helm with his incredible ability to tell stories, also his awareness and use of the most current technology in cinema nowadays, which could lend itself very well to this kind of story. But also his ability to work with actors and how he brings out such amazing performances from humans, as well as animated characters."

Evans was always a little terrified of the original Pinocchio, including the borderline macabre sequences involving the Coachman and the donkey transformations of the kidnapped children. He wanted to bring a sense of authenticity and integrity to those same scenes in the new film.

"A live-action remake of an 2D-animated character means you have to really think outside the box and be brave," he explains. "My character, for example, is nothing like he is in the animation. He's much darker and scarier. Although the one in the animation was scary, but I'm also a real human being. I can move differently. We were able to incorporate physical things within the character that we couldn't have done with the animation. I embrace all that. I think most of the time it's warranted in films. This one definitely is warranted."

Oh Signur.
