Presuming that another film gets released in 2014, it is likely to be the new hand-drawn film from John Musker and Ron Clements. And no, I'm not talking "Mort" as the rights to that would have required the Mouse to purchase the entire series, which it didn't want to commit to. So this new project is something else that the duo has pitched Lasseter. All that is known, is that it will be hand-drawn.

News:

Da TAG Blog:

At the Diz

I spent a good part of the afternoon at the Disney Company's hat building, where there's more production happening ...

Wreck-It Ralph is well underway, with 100 staffers (if my informants have their numbers right) now working on the picture. A Chris Buck feature and King of the Elves are also moving briskly along.

Animators practicing the hand-drawn version of the craft are now doing test footage of characters in 2-D versions, although the characters will ultimately be rendered and executed as C.G. when the films are in production. An animator related:

"This is a way for directors to see how the characters move and act before the c.g. versions are built. We can get footage out faster for test purposes. ..."

I got to look at some tests. It will be interesting to see the same characters in their computer graphic mode.

And there is early work on a possible hand-drawn feature taking place, although staff said it's too early to say if it will ultimately get made or not. The most recent example of the craft gets released this weekend.

... "Winnie the Pooh" is the Walt Disney Animation Studios' first journey into the Hundred Acre Wood in more than three decades.

... "We are going to take down 'Harry Potter,' no question," said [producer Peter] Del Vecho ...

I'm sure it will be a horse race over the weekend.

Q: Any more upcoming features, anything that you have up there in the future for you?

Peter del Vecho: Well, right after this, next year will be Wreck-It Ralph, a very funny CG movie about videogames of the 60’s coming into the present day. Then we’ve got another movie, King of the Elves coming up, again a very different world. And then a movie that I’m working on that hasn’t been announced yet. So, we have a big line-up of films coming up. In fact, we have more films in development that we can possibly put in production. So, it’s a great time at the studo.

News:

Da TAG Blog:

Companies (Disney included) will make hand-drawn animated films until they don't.

The Disney animators who do hand-drawn stuff inform me that another "traditional" animated feature is in early development, but management hasn't yet decided whether to green-light another one or not.

I read Disney is working on an adaptation of Charles Perrault's fairy tale "Donkeyskin"...
is it true? if it's true, I will love it. Donkeyskin is my fav fable.
are Ron & John directors of this fairy tale?

Un utente anonimo scrive:

I think John and Ron may be working on a feature based on Marvel's Guardians of Galaxy: www.itsonthegrid.com/news/

Tonight at the Pacific Film Archive, on [the UC Berkeley] campus by the Hearst Gymnasium for Women, director John Musker gave a lecture called “The Animator’s Art: Lecture and Clips.” Musker directed many of Disney’s Renaissance era works, like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, and more recently The Princess and the Frog. He gave a wonderful lecture speckled with film clips of work-in-progress scenes, not mere copies of the films that we are so familiar with.

Some interesting tidbits he shared:
• The scene for “Zero to Hero” in Hercules was inspired by a flight Musker took to New York, in which he listened to a demo tape of the song while watching clips of NBA all-stars – a “happy accident”, as David Lynch would say! He then incorporated it with music video clips of En Vogue and C+C Music Factory, creating a strange yet oddly fluid cultural mash-up.
• “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)” was shot by filming live actors/dancers, and was then animated based on their movements. Very funny to see this clip!
• Raymond from The Princess and the Frog was based on the Cajun boat captain that the filmmakers met while researching for the film. The captain took them on a cruise through the bayous.
• His upcoming film will be a combination of hand-drawn 2D animation with 3D CGI animation, and WILL BE A MUSICAL. Most importantly haha. He doesn’t know who will compose the music yet though, the film is still going through the storyboard phase.

Being the geek I am, I stayed behind after with Dad to talk with him. I told him how I was a 1991 baby, so his films were a big part of my childhood. I shared the story of how I took my toy Aladdin lamp with me everywhere, and even slept with it. He said his kids were a few years older than me, but were also enamored with Disney animated films and the surrounding merchandise.

I asked him how involved he was with the adaptations of his works, like the new Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Undersea Adventure ride at Disney’s California Adventure and the Aladdin musical that just opened in Seattle. He said they are typically not very involved, which is frustrating for him since they are characters that he helped create, comparing them to his children. He was very pleased with the Aladdin musical, however, and recommended I see it.He signed a flyer for the event, and also the special book that came with the Aladdin Collector’s DVD Gift Set – he signed, “To [monorail91] – Best Wishes and glad to be part of your childhood!! Best wishes! – John Musker.” What a night!
