Kevin Feige Says What Marvel Studios Does With X-Men Will Be "Quite Different"

Marvel fans can expect an unfamiliar future ahead for the X-Men movies. During the Hall H panel on Saturday night at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed the Phase 4 slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The X-Men are not a part of that schedule, but Feige did allude to “mutants” being something that Marvel Studios is working on.

Speaking to IGN after the event, Feige clarified that the use of the word “mutants” instead of X-Men is nothing to read into, but that Marvel’s approach to the franchise will be different than what’s come before. “Mutants and X-Men are interchangeable,” Feige clarified. “I just said mutants. But yes, whatever we do will be quite different than what’s been done before.”

20th Century Fox launched the X-Men movie franchise in 2000. The studio put out 12 films in total (counting Dark Phoenix, which was released after the Disney purchase of 20th Century Fox was finalized). There’s still one film left to release, The New Mutants in 2020, but the franchise is considered done with the release of Dark Phoenix in the eyes of most fans.

In another interview, Feige elaborated a bit about his feelings towards being able to work on the X-Men and Fantastic Four following the Disney-Fox deal, but remained vague on the details. "I'm extremely excited about those characters and about bringing Marvel's First Family up to the platform and the level that they deserve," Feige said.

“The truth is, I’m excited for all of them. I’m excited, and it’s not just the marquee names you know — there are hundreds of names on those documents, on those agreements,” Feige said at the Golden Globes. “And the fact that Marvel is as close as we may ever get now to having access to all of the characters, is something I’ve been dreaming about for my almost 20 years at Marvel. And it’s very exciting.”

Dal sito ScreenRant:

X-Men Reboot Plans Still Under Discussion at Marvel Studios

Kevin Feige says that discussions are ongoing as to when the X-Men will make their MCU debut after Disney’s history acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

According to MCU mastermind Kevin Feige, talks of how to integrate the X-Men into the MCU are ongoing. The X-Men film series’ original home was 20th Century Fox. At that studio, the franchise produced 13 films and brought in over $6 billion in box office receipts. Credited as the advent of superhero films as we know them today, the original X-Men film featured Ian McKellen as Magneto, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Those three became mainstays in the franchise that eventually saw several spinoffs and sequels that brought onboard new characters.

Disney famously acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019 in a landmark merger. The move saw Disney swallow up all of 20th Century Fox’s IP, including their rights to the X-Men and other characters that had been outside of their reach. Questions lingered after the massive deal as to when characters like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four would make their debuts in the MCU. While Disney announced their first Fantastic Four film at their 2020 Investor’s Day, they remain tight-lipped on the status of the X-Men.

Now, Feige has told Screen Rant the status of Marvel’s work on bringing the X-Men into the fold. Feige professed his love for the X-Men, saying that was his starting point for introducing them to the MCU. He goes on to say that, while he can’t say anything before any official announcements, he says that discussions have been long and are currently ongoing at the studio.

Screen Rant: At Disney Investor Day, you announced that Fantastic Four is happening. When will we see the X-Men?

Kevin Feige: You know how much I love the X-Men. I already said that's where I started. I can't tell you anything before we actually announced it, but rest assured, the discussions have been long and ongoing internally.

The introduction of the X-Men into the MCU is highly anticipated, not only because of their iconic comics run, but because of their landmark films, as well. The original X-Men films introduced comic book movies to the general public alongside Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy. It’s safe to say that, because of them, we have the MCU and DCEU as we know them today. While not all of the films were successful, they’ve had some massive hits.

They also had a distinctive tone that set them apart from the MCU in important ways, dealing with themes and stories that the MCU just couldn’t dive into. Now that the MCU can take on the X-Men, it will be interesting to see how they can bring famous characters like Wolverine, Rogue, Mystique, and Professor X into the fold. As of now, it seems like Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is the only character who will not be recast, but it’s safe to say that the probably of the rest of them being recast is rather high. Jackman reportedly ended his tenure as Wolverine with the critically acclaimed Logan and the rest have appeared in the franchise on and off over the years. The X-Men will bring a slew of fresh faces to the MCU, and probably some big stars along with it, and while their debut is a few years off, the wait will likely be worth it.

Un articolo che ci era sfuggito:

* Pare che il film sugli X Men in sviluppo sarà al momento intitolato The Mutants.

Dal sito The Illuminerdi:

THE MUTANTS: MARVEL STUDIOS IS OFFICIALLY BRINGING X-MEN INTO THE MCU: EXCLUSIVE

Marvel Studios is currently developing a X-Men based feature film tentatively titled, The Mutants.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is well known to be at the start of its biggest expansion to date with Phase 4. This is kicking off with the highly anticipated season finale of WandaVision before five more Disney+ shows and four full-length movies arrive in 2021.

2022 has a confirmed dozen new entries as well, and after that, the MCU’s future becomes just the slightest bit more uncertain. Thankfully, fans are aware of two more major projects on the way in 2023 or later, with James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 and Jon Watts moving from Spider-Man: No Way Home into Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four.

Thanks to Fantastic Four debuting in the MCU, the official start of Marvel Studios’ jump into bringing the formerly Fox Studios-owned properties alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be a reality. However, there is one more huge group of heroes that have only had a little bit of buzz so far: the X-Men.

The only mutant-related confirmed project to be set within the MCU thus far is Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 3, which is in the early stage of development right now. That is about to change today, thanks to incredibly exciting news that The Illuminerdi has obtained from our sources.

THE MUTANTS ARE COMING TO THE MCU

The Illuminerdi has learned of a Marvel Studios-led project produced by Marvel CCO Kevin Feige entitled, The Mutants. It’s currently being developed as a feature film and is intended to be a reboot of the X-Men franchise.

After over a dozen movies produced by 20th Century Fox, Marvel Comics’ mutants are finally taking their rightful place on-screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With so little information at this time, it’s hard to pin down the capacity in which these exciting characters will arrive, but it’s such an exciting event knowing that the project is indeed in development.

Feige has only mentioned the mutants in passing over the past couple of years since the Fox/Disney merger. Although their inclusion in the MCU was always assumed to happen, nothing official has been put out into the world until now. We at The Illuminerdi are so excited to be able to share this information with you, and we hope to have the opportunity to update you on The Mutants as more information becomes available.

How excited are you for The Mutants to release within the MCU? What characters do you think will be featured? Will it be the traditional first class or a new bunch of mutants?

Dal sito The Disinsider:

The Russo Brothers Were in Talks For Another MCU Film But Have Since Stalled

As the pandemic still lingers around the globe, the entertainment industry has changed dramatically. Most notably the way we receive movies. Streaming services like Disney+, Netflix, Amazon, HBO Max, and Paramount+, have homed some of the biggest movies of the last year.

The Walt Disney Company saw multiple projects from the various studios make the movie to streaming such as The One and Only Ivan, Onward, Artemis Fowl, Soul, Luca, with titles such as Mulan, Raya and the Last Dragon, Cruella, Black Widow, and Jungle Cruise, hit the streamer with Premier Access. Sadly, as nice as it was for fans, it wasn’t all good news for people behind the scenes.

Talks of Pixar employees not being happy their recent films hit the streamer for free and not on the big screen, had their feelings hurt. The biggest and most notable drama has been the Scarlett Johansson/Disney lawsuit. For years, studios paid stars a base salary. But bigger names often negotiated a share of box office grosses or a cut of licensing fees, which for blockbuster movies could yield eight-figure payouts. Disney simultaneously released Black Widow in theaters and on its Disney+ streaming channel in July. The company stood to collect most of the $30 users paid to watch the movie at home, compared with roughly 60% of movie theater tickets sold. The more home viewers, the less Johansson collects, her team feared.

A lawsuit was opened up by Johansson’s team. In her complaint, Johansson claims Disney breached contract when the studio made the decision to release Black Widow on Disney+, the same day the Marvel film hit theaters. The actress earns bonuses when the film hits certain box office milestones and she is accusing Disney of not having the film exclusively in theaters because it “saw the opportunity to promote its flagship subscription service.” Disney then demanded the lawsuit over Johansson’s pay be moved to arbitration, a procedure in which a dispute is submitted, by agreement of the parties, to one or more arbitrators who make a binding decision on the dispute. In choosing arbitration, the parties opt for a private dispute resolution procedure instead of going to court.

The outcome of the legal battle could help set new compensation benchmarks for digital releases, according to current and former Disney employees, as well as executives who do business with the studio. Most recently, Cruella star, Emma Stone was debating taking legal action as well, but Disney offered an 8-figure salary to return for the sequel. Sadly, some talent are worried still, and according to the Wall Street Journal, the Russo brothers, who have just come off giving Disney two back to back $2 Billion blockbusters in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, are among those worried. Per their recent report, the duo were in talks to helm a new movie for Marvel Studios, but talks have since stalled in light of the Johansson lawsuit.

Since the lawsuit, brothers Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, directors of Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame,” the highest-grossing movie of all time, hit an impasse in negotiations to direct another Marvel movie. The Johansson dispute left them unsure how their next movie would be distributed and how they would be paid.

It is unknown at this time what the Russo brothers were in talks to direct. Secret Wars was a project that the directors have expressed interest in adapting in the future. However, it seems way too early to jump in that direction as Phase 4 is just kicking off. Perhaps it was for the rumored X-Men project, The Mutants. Time will tell, and I am sure Feige won’t let his most notable talent just walk away, so for now we wait and see how this boils over.

‘Loki’ Scribe Michael Waldron Potentially Writing A Marvel ‘X-Men’ Project

Believe it or not, thanks to a brief exchange on Instagram we may finally have some evidence that an X-Men project is not only in development, but who may be working on it too.

Approximately one week ago, Thor: Love and Thunder writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson shared a simple post celebrating her birthday.

In a (now hidden) Instagram exchange between her and Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scribe Michael Waldron, she alluded that he would be writing X-Men.

Thankfully someone screenshot it on the off-chance it gets taken down, and you can also see that down below. The photo surfaced Monday morning.

“Good luck with your life,” Waldron commented below Robinson’s post, to which she replied “good luck w writing x men.”

Now, while this could very well be an inside joke between two writers or Robinson trolling Waldron for whatever reason, the fact that the post is no longer available makes it seem like it could actually have been a slip up on Robinson’s part.

We know Waldron’s writing has been well-received by Disney by the fact that he went from working on Loki to Doctor Strange 2 and even some in-development Star Wars project with Kevin Feige. For lack of a better term, he appears to be Marvel’s “golden child” at the moment, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he was allowed to play even more with Marvel’s ever expanding live action catalog.

We also know that there is in fact an X-Men project in development at Marvel tentatively titled The Mutants.

Sadly, we won’t know for sure until either Feige, Waldron, or one of the major trades confirms the “news.” In the meantime, we’ll be on high alert and will provide any additional updates should there be any.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters next month on May 6th, while the second season of Loki, which Waldron is returning for, is expected to begin shooting this fall.

Rumor:

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Taron Egerton Reveals He’s Met With Marvel Studios

Could Taron Egerton be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future? While many fans want to see him take on the role of Wolverine, played famously by Hugh Jackman, we now know he has met with Marvel Studios.

While speaking with the New York Times during his press tour for Apple TV+ series Black Bird, Egerton revealed that he has indeed met with Marvel Studio executives, including Kevin Feige. Egerton goes on to mention Wolverine only adding more fuel to the speculation fire.

“I don’t think it would be wrong to say that. I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it. But hopefully if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot.”

As of now, it is unconfirmed if the talks were for the Wolverine role or another role altogether. We have seen in the past popular fan casts get utilized in the MCU after stars met with Marvel Studios. Most recently was John Krasinski‘s appearance as Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Marvel Studios will have their own panel at this year’s D23 Expo on September 10. This would be an ideal way not only to announce an X-Men/Mutants project but Taron Egerton as the new Wolverine, that is if what this is all about that is. Marvel Studios will also be attending San Diego Comic-Con later this month, with some smaller announcements sure to be made.

The Mutants Film Reportedly in the Works at Marvel

The mutants are seemingly making their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to a recent report from Deadline outlining what fans can expect from the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con, Deadline mentions a handful of films that Marvel Studios is working on, including Fantastic Four, Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels, and a film they call The Mutants.

Currently, it’s unknown exactly whether this film will feature the iconic mutant group the X-Men, or perhaps just introduce the idea and concept of mutants in the world of the MCU.

For those unaware, the finale of Ms. Marvel includes a scene that reveals that Kamala Khan has different genetic makeup than most humans, with Bruno revealing to her that her DNA has a “mutation” in it, just as a riff of the iconic X-Men: The Animated Series theme song plays in the background.

That marked the first real utterance and acknowledgment of mutants in the MCU and essentially confirms that Khan is one of them. While it’s currently unclear exactly what the film will be, we do know of at least one mutant in the MCU now, and with SDCC right around the corner, fans might just end up knowing more by the end of the month.

Film ufficialmente in sviluppo.

Dal sito DeadLine:

Marvel Studios Execs Eye Meetings Soon To Hear Writers’ Pitches For Coveted ‘X-Men’ Job – The Dish

EXCLUSIVE: With a deal in place with the Writers Guild, studios have begun taking aim at setting writers for their open assignments. Marvel Studios is looking to set the bar with what will likely become one of the more sought-after jobs for any scribe.

Sources tell Deadline that Marvel will start setting writer meetings later this fall for pitches on its anticipated X-Men movie. Insiders add there is no rush to fill the job since the film hasn’t been dated yet, and it’s more than likely that writer decision will be made at the top of 2024. Marvel declined comment.

While it will still be a bit before an X-Men movie makes it to theaters, the news that Marvel has started development on the live-action pic is sure to excite fans of the franchise who have been begging for a new movie since Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox and its library in 2019. The X-Men universe was by far the most popular and profitable Marvel IP that Fox controlled with seven films and a successful Wolverine spinoff franchise that produced three more. After the disappointing release of Dark Phoenix in 2019, however, X-Men has been in need of a makeover.

Following the Fox acquisition, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been overseeing the development process but there has been no rush to reboot the franchise with so many other projects farther along in development. That said, Marvel has had its fun with fans, teasing that an X-Men movie was on the horizon by dropping hints in its movies and TV shows — specifically at the end of its Ms. Marvel series, where a character in an end-credit scene dropped the word “mutant.” This scene seemed to signal the emergence of mutants that make up the X-Men team.

Marvel is also already toe-dipping into the X-Men world with a throwback to the classic ’90s animated series; the animated X-Men ’97 will debut in early 2024 on Disney+.

With the WGA and AMPTP deal done, open writing assignments are expected to be one form of the business to see a bump in the coming weeks. While writers already assigned to certain projects have picked up their pens, other areas like the spec market and especially productions will remain either slow or on hold until the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved.

SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike since July 14, resumes talks with the AMPTP on Monday.

* Mister Sinister is reportedly the top contender to become the main villain in the MCU's upcoming 'X-MEN' project.

* Marvel Studios is talking to writers for the MCU's X-Men reboot, and for now, Magneto is not part of the plan.

* The upcoming MCU's 'X-MEN' reboot could reportedly prioritize female characters in leading roles.
