Dawson: One of your upcoming projects is a film called Knights Of The Zodiac. What is that about?

Janssen: It’s based on an anime series that was very popular in Europe, and they’re turning that into a movie. It’s based on Greek mythology. We were meant to shoot it last year in Europe but because of the pandemic, we got pushed twice already. So, that’s back on the plate for this year. Hopefully, fingers crossed, everything will move forward.

Diciamo la verità, molti di noi si erano completamente dimenticati del film live action Knights of the Zodiac basato su il fumetto/serie animata di Saint Seiya (I cavalieri dello zodiaco) annunciato nel 2016.

Nel 2017 avevamo appreso che il film sarebbe stato co-prodotto dalla Toei e da A Really Good Film Company (ARGF) di base a Hong Kong e diretto da Tomek Baginski (produttore esecutivo di The Witcher).

Nel 2018 infine era stato rivelato che la sceneggiatura sarebbe stata scritta da Will Geiger, Blazej Dzikowski ed Eugene Son (Avengers Assemble, la serie animata Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya).

Famke Janssen
L’attrice, che molti ricorderanno come interprete di Jean Grey nei film degli X-Men e come interprete di Eve in Le regole del delitto perfetto, ha rivelato a Forbes di far parte del cast del film:

“È basato su una serie anime che era molto popolare in Europa e lo stanno trasformando in un film. È basato sulla mitologia greca.

Avremmo dovuto girarlo l’anno scorso in Europa, ma a causa della pandemia, siamo già stati slittati due volte. Adesso è tornato in careggiata per quest’anno. Se tutto va bene, incrociamo le dita, potranno andare avanti.”

Chi potrebbe interpretare? Difficilmente la possiamo vedere nel ruolo di Athena o Shaina/Tisifone visto che l’attrice ha 56 anni, oppure possiamo aspettarci un discreto alzamento delle età dei personaggi?

I cavalieri dello zodiaco sono una delle mie serie preferite e onestamente il passaggio lvie action mi spaventa molto.
Gia' la serie netflix in GCI, tra grafica e cambiamenti di sesso non sono riuscito a vederla.
Apsettero' di vedere un trailer, per farlo bene ci vuole un budget molto alto

Sono d'accordo con Fulvio e il fatto che non se ne parli sui siti di cinema che contano mi fa presagire che il film sia di serie B, tristemente rielaborato e lontano dall'anime. Temo qualcosa come il primo Dungeons and Dragons, con una decaduta Thor Birch dopo l'exploit di American Beauty. La Janssen dopo l'iconica saga di X-Men sta andando incontro allo stesso inesorabile destino. Secondo me avrebbe bisogno di un'ottima serie tv o miniserie per essere rilanciata. Per ora non sta che macinando film "da cassetta", dimenticabili a dire poco. In generale spero vivamente di essere contraddetto.

'The Witcher' exec producer Tomasz Baginski is directing the fantasy for Toei and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.

Pacific Rim: Uprising actor Mackenyu and Madison Iseman are leading the cast of Knights of the Zodiac, a live-action adaptation of the 1980s manga and anime series titled Saint Seiya being made by Toei Animation and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions.

Sean Bean, Famke Janssen, Nick Stahl, Diego Tinoco and Mark Dacascos are also in the firmament of the fantasy that’s coming off of wrapping production.

Tomasz Baginski, the Polish animator and special effects wiz who has worked on The Witcher, is directing the movie that Toei is producing.

The manga and anime, created by Masami Kurumada and first introduced in 1986, told of warriors known as The Saints who gather their powers from the constellations. They are gathered to defend the reincarnated goddess Athena from other gods who intend to take over the Earth.

In what is labeled an origin story, Mackenyu is starring as Seiya, a street orphan and the title hero of the franchise. When a mystical energy known as Cosmo awakens in him, Seiya embarks on a journey to conquer the ancient Greek armor of Pegasus and choose his side in a preternatural battle for the fate of Sienna (Iseman), a young girl who struggles to control her godly powers.

Bean plays a mentor named Alman Kiddo, a man who recruits Seiya into the Knights order, which he founded when he discovered the reincarnated goddess. Tinoco is a man hired to kill the vulnerable goddess.

The project had been in development for years and suffered several production delays before finally shooting this year. Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken (10 Cloverfield Lane) wrote the most recent drafts.

The movie boasts the fighting prowess of veteran stuntman and martial arts choreographer Andy Cheng, who was the fight coordinator of Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Cheng acted as stunt coordinator and fight coordinator for the production, which filmed in Hungary and Croatia.

Toei, which was behind the anime that ran from 1986 to 1989, will distribute in Japan, with SPWA handling the rest of the world, excluding China and the Middle East.

Mackenyu, the son of international martial arts actor Sonny Chiba who has made a slew of films popular manga adaptations in Japan, is repped by Buchwald and Asian Cinema Entertainment.

Iseman, repped by Paradigm, Zero Gravity and Morris Yorn, appeared in the recent Jumanji movies and is one of the stars of the I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series.

Bean, who is best known for his work for the opening chapters of The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones franchises, most recently starred in TNT’s Snowpiercer series. He repped by ICM and Independent Talent Group.

Janssen, known for her work in the X-Men and Taken franchises, recently appeared in the Freddie Highmore crime mini-series The Vault. She is repped by APA, The Artists Partnership and LINK Entertainment.

Stahl, repped by LINK Entertainment and Fuller Law, is coming off a stint on AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead while Tinoco — repped by Paradigm, Impact Artists Group and Jackoway Austen — appeared in Netflix’s popular series, On My Block.

Dacascos is known for his action roles and appeared in John Wick: Parebellum and recurred in TV’s Hawaii Five-O. He is repped by MPG TALENT, Global Artists and Goodman Genow.

Ommioddio, allora esiste sul serio e sta arrivando. Non riesco ancora ad esprimermi, il giudizio è rimandato, ma almeno non mi sento di bocciarlo da quello che ho visto.

Io sono una grande fan anime&manga e devo dire che non mi sembra richiamare minimamente alle atmosfere del manga. Ho trovato proprio strane certe cose del trailer, secondo me è molto modernizzato e mi puzza di giapponesata

Sembra trash e pare un incrocio tra un film marvel e i power rangers.
Non so se sono diventato super critico verso tutto perché sono invecchiato o perché veramente producono solo immondizia cercando di vendercela come oro col fattore nostalgia

Non sembra terribile (mi aspettavo di peggio), ma credo si possa affermare con tranquillità che la maggior parte di queste operazioni nostalgiche vada a finire malissimo.

Restando in ambito anime, ultimamente stanno replicando Lady Oscar su italia 1 il sabato mattina, e sta riscuotendo un successo enorme a livello di ascolti.
Secondo me una serie live action su lady oscar, se fatta con budget adeguato e senza ritrosie riguardo i lati più drammatici e oscuri della storia, potrebbe essere davvero magnifica.

Concordo con Hiroe e Fulvio, mi sembra tanto un filmetto per adolescenti. Ho trovato molte discrepanze con manga e anime (premetto che sono una fan sfegatata della prima serie).

Mi rendo conto che questo nuovo trailer non fosse stato ancora pubblicato. Per me resta ancora un sì. Il 28 aprile uscirà in Giappone, speriamo presto anche da noi. Io gli darò senz'altro una possibilità, ho visto scene e personaggi piuttosto coinvolgenti per me.

A parte che trovo l'attore di Pegasus molto seducente, io sto film lo trovo figo per quanto over the top. Chiaramente vanno al ribasso, Phoenix è l'unico cattivo e scontro epico del film, a giudicare anche dalla locandina. Semmai avrà successo, lo spero sufficiente per fare un seguito e mostrarci tutti gli altri compagni di Pegasus innanzitutto (sempre che non ci siano già con ruoli cameo, tenuti nascosti, come spero) e soprattutto i cavalieri d'oro al Tempio.

Al cinema lo vedrò sicuramente, risparmio i soldi della Sirenetta, che ne guadagnerà a torto fin troppi, per sostenere questo. Facciamolo in molti.
