Da We Got This Covered

Disney Developing Live-Action Robin Hood Remake

Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly, what a day! Fans of the animated Robin Hood are going to be singing that joyous song all day once they hear this news: according to our sources – the same ones who told us that an Aladdin sequel is happening, a Ms. Marvel TV show was in the works and that a She-Hulk TV series was coming to Disney Plus, all of which have since been confirmed, so we have no reason to doubt them – Disney is currently in the early stages of developing a live-action reboot (similar to the style of the recent Lion King) of their 1973 classic.
The original film followed the adventures of Robin Hood and Little John as they teamed up with the inhabitants of Nottingham to fight the oppressive taxation from the hostile Prince John. Unlike other features that revolve around the iconic hero, though, Disney’s flick used anthropomorphic animals to portray the legendary characters. The movie was a financial success and has since become known as one of the best adaptions of the famous tale.
From what we understand, the studio will once again use animals in its storytelling. It’s a smart move, too, as many of the other live-action projects that have tried to tell the tale of Robin Hood with humans ended up disappointing at the box office. Besides, why make changes to the formula if it worked so well the first time around?

As mentioned above, the film will likely follow the path of the highly successful remake of The Lion King, employing CGI for most of its scenes. Whether the movie keeps in its fun songs or opts to completely remove them, that we don’t know, but we’re certainly curious to find out. Lastly, it’ll also be interesting to see if the studio decides to give this feature a theatrical release like Jon Favreau’s aforementioned flick or instead chooses to release it on Disney Plus like the Home Alone remake.
Clearly, there’s a lot we still don’t know about the new Robin Hood, but keep checking We Got This Covered for more news about the flick as it breaks, as well as information on all of the other upcoming Disney live-action reboots, of which there are many.

A quanto pare il sito We Got This Covered aveva ragione!

Da The Hollywood Reporter:

'Robin Hood' Remake in the Works at Disney+ With 'Blindspotting' Director (Exclusive)

Kari Granlund, who wrote last year's 'Lady and the Tramp,' is scripting the remake of Disney's 1973 animated feature.
Disney has targeted Robin Hood as the latest of its animated classics to get the remake treatment.

Carlos Lopez Estrada, perhaps best known for directing the 2018 crime movie Blindspotting, is on board to helm the project, which is being written by Kari Granlund. Granlund already is in the Disney fold after having written the studio’s recent remake of Lady and the Tramp.

Justin Springer, who counts the studio’s Dumbo and Tron Legacy among his credits, is producing the feature being developed for the studio’s Disney+ streaming service.

Robin Hood was a comedic and musical take on the famous tale, with anthropomorphic animals inhabiting the roles of the characters made famous over the centuries. Hood was a fox; Little John, a bear; Friar Tuck, a badger; Prince John, a thumb-sucking lion; the sheriff of Nottingham, a wolf; and Maid Marian, a vixen.

The movie has seen its critical appraisal rise, fall and rise again over the years, although its influence seems long-lasting. One of the songs, "Love," was nominated for an Oscar, while another, "Oo De Lally," is well known.

The new take is said to be a musical and again will feature the characters as anthropomorphic, this time in a live-action/CG hybrid format.

The deals were inked before Hollywood’s lockdown. The project is in early development.

Granlund co-wrote the script for Godmothered, a Disney+ feature that was due to shoot this spring with Jillian Bell and Isla Fisher but was postponed due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

In addition to Blindspotting, which starred Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs, Estrada directed an episode of Legion, FX’s trippy thriller based on a Marvel Comics character, and wrapped Summertime, a drama featuring teen poets from various Los Angeles neighborhoods. The drama debuted at Sundance. Estrada also is working on a theatrical feature for Walt Disney Animation.

Estrada is repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham. Granlund is repped by Verve and Industry Entertainment.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Director Carlos López Estrada Talks ‘Raya and the Last Dragon,’ His New Animated Film and Live-Action ‘Robin Hood’

We are less than three weeks away from the release of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ newest original film, Raya and the Last Dragon. One of the film’s directors, Carlos López Estrada shared what it was like being part of this new project.

Here is what López Estrada had to say while speaking with the LA Times En Español:

“It was an unexpected opportunity for me. I grew up watching Disney movies and if you asked me two years ago if I could see myself directing a Disney movie I would say ‘No’. It was unexpected, one of those people from Disney’s development department watched “Blindspotting” on Sundance and invited me, they were looking for new directors, young directors with diverse voices, with different backgrounds. And when we were talking I saw they were really interested on telling stories from a very different point of view and that’s what I was doing at the time. It was a very interesting contrast because, I wrapped filming “Summertime” one day and two days later I was at Disney planning my new movie and as you can imagine, both are completely different worlds. Disney has showed a lot of support to the stories I want to tell in my movies, and to be honest it’s really special to me to have these opportunities. I directed “Raya” first, which is the movie that’s about to be released, and the next one is a very intimate movie for me and I started developing it from zero, it’ll be releaed in two years. I love it, I found a new creative home in an unexpected place but I’m really happy and let’s see what happens with these stories. “

Later the interviewer asks him if the second movie he’s talking about has something to do with the live-action adaptation of Robin Hood he is directing for Disney+, and Carlos says:

“It’s an original movie for Disney Animation, they haven’t announced it yet, so everything is confidential at this point but we know it will come out on 2023, it’s in development and we will start with storyboards, the music and the script in a few months”

The interviewer asks again about Robin Hood and Carlos says:

“For now it doesn’t have a release date, we don’t have plans for it yet I hope one day we can continue with this project but for now I think they’re still figuring out some internal stuff”

Raya and the Last Dragon features an all-star voice cast that includes Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Izaac Wang, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Benedict Wong, Jona Xiao, Sandra Oh, Thalia Tran, Lucille Soong, Alan Tudyk, Gordon Ip, Dichen Lachman, Patti Harrison, Jon “Dumbfoundead” Park, Sung Kang, Sierra Katow, Ross Butler, François Chau and Paul Yen. Don Hall and López Estrada are directing, with Paul Briggs and John Ripa co-directing. Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho are the producers, and Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim wrote the screenplay.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Raya and the Last Dragon will be available on Disney+ with Premier Access in most Disney+ markets, at the same time as it is released in select theaters on March 5, 2021.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Upcoming Disney Live-Action Remakes/Adaptations

Cruella is finally in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access. The live-action remakes have been a financial goldmine for Disney, so it’s not shocking that studio has many more projects in various stages of production. So let’s look ahead and see what’s to come.

[...]

What else?

Remakes for Bambi, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, James and the Giant Peach, and a sequel to 2016’s The Jungle Book are also in various stages of development. Though, I am told these projects are much farther away from beginning than the aforementioned films we’ve listed. The studio is also in development on a Prince Anders film for Disney+, as well as the Gaston and Lefou series, and Mulan spin-offs.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ Director Carlos López Estrada Exits Walt Disney Animation

Raya and the Last Dragon director Carlos López Estrada has confirmed he is leaving Walt Disney Animation Studios after three years. Estrada shared the news with fans on Instagram Monday morning.

“After the most beautiful 3 years, my time at Disney Animation has come to an end. I love this place and all the people in it, but it’s now time to keep growing”

Joining Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2019, Carlos López Estrada worked at Walt Disney Animation Studios on Frozen II, directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, and recently as co-director on Raya and the Last Dragon, alongside Don Hall.

It is unknown at this time if the director will stay on board Walt Disney Studios’ Bambi remake, which has yet to get an official greenlight, as Disney was working on some internal things on the project. He was also set to direct an original animated film (tentatively titled Foster) at Disney, which already has a script, storyboards, and music, set for release in November 2023. A new director will most likely come on board to take over directing duties, but we likely won’t get an update on that until Disney’s D23 Expo, this September.

Raya and the Last Dragon, now streaming on Disney+, takes us on an exciting, epic journey to the fantasy world of Kumandra, where Raya, a lone warrior, must track down the legendary last dragon to stop an evil force that has returned after 500 years to once again threaten her homeworld. The film features an outstanding voice cast, including Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Izaac Wang, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Benedict Wong, Jona Xiao, Sandra Oh, Thalia Tran, Lucille Soong, Alan Tudyk, Gordon Ip, Dichen Lachman, Patti Harrison, Jon “Dumbfoundead” Park, Sung Kang, Sierra Katow, Ross Butler, François Chau and Paul Yen.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

It’s been a few years since we received an update, but Carlos Lopez Estrada (Blinspotting) is attached to direct Robin Hood. Kari Granlund, who wrote the live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp for Disney+, wrote the script. Disney producer Justin Springer (Dumbo, Tron: Legacy) is also onboard the project. The film will use a hybrid of live-action and CGI, as the characters will be anthropomorphic like the animated film before it. The film will also be a musical, which is different from the original. The film has been put onhold but sources say the project will very much happen.
