Disney Eyeing Tom Hanks To Play Geppetto In Robert Zemeckis’ ‘Pinocchio’

EXCLUSIVE: After earning an Oscar nomination for playing Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Tom Hanks is zeroing in on another children’s favorite. We are hearing that he is in early negotiations to play Geppetto in Disney and Robert Zemeckis’ live-action retelling of Pinocchio.

Although insiders say negotiations are very early, we hear that after reading the script, Hanks has reached out to Zemeckis to let him know he wants to do the film. Disney has always longed for Hanks to play the woodcarver, having approached him years ago when Paul King was attached to direct. That deal was never made, but given Hanks and Zemeckis’ long-standing relationship going back to when they both won Oscars for their work on Forrest Gump, this seems more likely to move forward.

The 1940 Disney animated classic tells the tale of a living puppet who, with the help of a cricket as his conscience, must prove himself worthy to become a real boy.

Disney continues to see its live-action adaptation strategy as a major part of its pipeline, with last year’s Aladdin and The Lion King both crossing the billion-dollar milestone.

The film marks the fourth collaboration between Hanks and Zemeckis after Forrest Gump, Cast Away and the Christmas classic The Polar Express.

Hanks is still filming the Elvis Presley biopic at Warner Bros, which had to halt production after he and his wife, Rita Wilson, fell ill with COVID-19. They have since recovered and the studio is hoping to start production again in the fall in Australia. He was most recently seen in the World War II pic Greyhound, which premiered on Apple TV + and shattered viewing records for the streamer following its release.

He is repped by CAA.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Tom Hanks is Back in Talks to Play Geppetto in Disney’s Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’

Last year it was reported that Tom Hanks (Toy Story) was in talks to play Geppetto in Disney’s live-action Pinocchio remake with Paul King attached for direct. Sadly, both King and Hanks departed the project. Now, it looks like Hanks is back in.

According to Deadline, Tom Hanks is back in early talks for the role. Hanks reportedly reached out to new director Robert Zemeckis who signed on the project last fall, and let him know he wants to do the film. Disney has always longed for Hanks to play the woodcarver.

Zemeckis will also co-write the next draft with Chris Weitz (Bambi), Andrew Miano and Weitz will produce Pinocchio through their company Depth of Field. Harry Potter And The Cursed Child Playwright Jack Thorne recently wrote a draft as well.

The film is expected to have a budget of over $150 million, Disney’s live-action remakes of Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book had similar budgets, so expect the House of Mouse to put Pinocchio on a grand scale visually.

Released in 1940, Pinocchio was the second animated movie made by Disney, after 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. It adapted the Italian story by Carlo Collodi about a wooden boy puppet crafted by an old carver named Geppetto. The boy is brought to life by a fairy who says he will become a real boy if he shows bravery. The character of Jiminy Cricket becomes his de facto conscience and tried to steer him in the right direction. What follows is a series of adventures that include Pinocchio being kidnapped to be part of a puppet show, getting turned into a donkey, and being swallowed by a whale.

Dal sito The Illuminerdi:

DISNEY’S LIVE-ACTION PINOCCHIO EYES ALAN CUMMING AND STEPHEN GRAHAM FOR FASCINATING SUPPORTING ROLES: EXCLUSIVE

The Illuminerdi has received notice of a casting search update for Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Pinocchio!

WHO’S WHO

In this casting update we’ve learned that Stephen Graham is being eyed to play the Coachman, while Alan Cummings is connected to the role of Honest John. The descriptions of the roles are as follows:

COACHMAN (Live Action role) – A sinister, shadowy figure who is notorious for luring little boys to Pleasure Island where they are transformed into donkeys.

HONEST JOHN (Animated role/Voiceover) – A literal and metaphorical fox. A sly con-man. He encourages Pinocchio to stop going to school and sells him to the circus.

Stephen Graham is the perfect grizzly Brit to tackle a role like the Coachman and Alan Cummings certainly has the ability to ooze that sleazy charm as Honest John.

PINOCCHIO PRODUCTION DETAILS

Pinochio is aiming to start production by the end of the year. The film will be helmed by director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) who will also write alongside Chris Weitz (Rogue One). It has been previously reported that longtime Zemeckis collaborator Tom Hanks is in talks to play Geppetto, Pinocchio’s father and creator. Pinocchio is being considered for a theatrical release, not a Disney+ exclusive.

What do you think of these potential castings? Filling Pinocchio with talent like Cummings and Graham, even in small supporting roles, would be a huge win for this feature! Let us know your thoughts!

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Disney Eyeing Alan Cumming and Stephen Graham For Roles in Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’

Alan Cumming (X2) and Stephen Graham (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) are reportedly being eyed for roles in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Pinocchio.

According to The Illuminerdi, Cumming is being looked at to play Honest John, A literal and metaphorical fox. A sly con-man. He encourages Pinocchio to stop going to school and sells him to the circus. Graham is being looked for the Coachman, A sinister, shadowy figure who is notorious for luring little boys to Pleasure Island where they are transformed into donkeys.

The studio is currently casting for roles such as Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket, Gideon (the character will be a female in this adaptation), Stromboli, and the Blue Fairy. Tom Hanks (Toy Story 4) is on board the project as Geppetto, making this his fourth collaboration with director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?)

Pinocchio is expected to start production in April under the working title “Maestro.” The film, which will be released theatrically, is expected to have a budget of over $150 million, Disney’s live-action remakes of Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book had similar budgets, so expect the House of Mouse to put Pinocchio on a grand scale visually.

Disney Mulling Pivot Of ‘Pinocchio’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Cruella’ From Theatrical To Disney+ Premieres

EXCLUSIVE: No final decision has been made, but Deadline hears that the uncertainty of the future theatrical marketplace has Disney looking at launching a number of its upcoming tentpole family films on Disney+ instead of the theatrical release bows that were envisioned when the films were developed and green lit. At this point, the films being discussed to make that pivot are Cruella, the Craig Gillespie-directed live-action re-imaging of the animated classic that stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson; the Robert Zemeckis-directed Pinocchio that has Tom Hanks starring; and Peter Pan and Wendy, the David Lowery-directed film that has Grown-ish star Yara Shahidi set to play Tinker Bell.

It isn’t clear at the moment whether the films will be offered free to Disney+ subscribers, as with the Pete Docter-directed Pixar film Soul, or for a premium charge as was done with Mulan. Still, it’s a bombshell development in the fast-changing theatrical/streaming landscape.

'Wonder Woman 1984' Going In Theaters & HBO Max On Christmas Day, Unprecedented For A Superhero Tentpole
The studio is looking at every option, and everything is under consideration and contingency planning, as Disney makes plans to lean in heavily on its direct-to-consumer initiative and towards continuing to build the juggernaut Disney+, whose subscriber numbers brightened up a last quarter that would otherwise have been bleak because of the wallop that theme parks and live entertainment took from the COVID pandemic.

The direct-to-consumer segment has soared this year by 41%, per the most recently reported quarter. Disney+ subscriptions grew to a remarkable 73.7 million as of early October, helped by the Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian and the Disney+ PVOD release of Mulan.

While this is well behind the 195 million or so paying customers of Netflix, that rival had a mighty head start around the world. But the lightning quick growth of Disney+ is enough to make the corporation see the benefits of a direct-to-consumer content business. The payoff will come not only in the subscription fees, but also in the stock price, sources said.

Deadline’s reveal of Disney’s plans comes just after Warner Bros made the announcement that its sequel Wonder Woman 1984 will not wait out the pandemic, but rather will premiere simultaneously on the HBO Max streaming site along with theaters on Christmas Day. Putting a sequel to a smash hit DC title is reflective of a disruptive moment. Sources said that Disney will likely lean heavily into series generated from the Marvel, Lucasfilm and other silos, but at this point, it is keeping some of its plum titles for release when the theatrical market recovers. The Marvel film Black Widow with Scarlett Johansson is not being contemplated for a streaming bow, Deadline hears.

No comment from the studio.

Dal sito DeadLine:

Disney on December 10 will announce its upcoming slate. While the studio will solidify what Deadline revealed recently — that the Tom Hanks-starrer Pinocchio, Peter Pan and the Emma Stone-starrer Cruella will bypass movie theaters to become Disney+ releases — the studio will also announce new projects from Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar that will encompass TV as well as theatrical. It will be a gesture toward not abandoning the exhibitors.
