Terremo d'occhio...

Olivia Wilde Tapped To Direct Untitled Female-Centered Marvel Movie At Sony

EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures is not only growing its slate of its Universe of Marvel Characters but is building on the female characters at the center of it, and looks to have landed one of the sought female directors in Hollywood. Sources tell Deadline that Olivia Wilde has closed a deal to direct and develop a secret Marvel film project revolving around a female character in the universe. While not confirmed, it is expected that the story will be centered on Spider-Woman.

Sony had no comment.

The film will be penned by Katie Silberman with Amy Pascal producing. Rachel O’Connor will exec produce.

Wilde, Silberman and Pascal already have strong ties and the three are working on a Christmas buddy film at Universal they hope to do prior to this one. Gary Spinelli penned a previous draft of the script.

The Spider-Woman character has actually been the alter ego of several characters in the Spider-Man timeline over the years including Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson and Jessica Drew, who was the first to sport the costume in the late 1970s. Since the concept is being completely revamped by Wilde, it’s unknown the direction the studio will go with her.

The project has been a high priority since the top of the year and Wilde came close to passing on it as her dance card has begun to fill up quite quickly. At the end of the day, the idea of having a chance to launch her own female superhero was too hard to pass up, and she eventually came around to fully committing to the project.

This marks the second film based around a female character in Sony’s universe of Marvel characters to land a director after S.J. Clarkson was tapped to direct a Madame Webb movie. Sony is also developing Black Cat and Silver Sable movies and is clearly making the effort to diversify the universe.

Around the industry, more and more female filmmakers are getting their shot at directing big-budget comic book movies. Nia DaCosta most recently landed the Captain Marvel 2 job at Marvel and along with Wilde and Clarkson will follow in the footsteps of Patty Jenkins, Cathy Yan and Chloe Zhao, the latter who has the upcoming The Eternals.

It has been quite the year and half for Wilde, who after spending the past decade as an A-list actress decided to make her move to directing with the coming-of-age tale Booksmart. The film was one of last year’s best reviewed films and earned Silberman a WGA nomination for best original screenplay.

She would follow that up by attaching herself to the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, which eventually landed at New Line following one of the more heated bidding wars of 2019. That film recently set Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson to star and will shoot this fall.

Wilde is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham. Silberman is repped by UTA, MXN Entertainment and Myman Greenspan.

Da The Illuminerdi.

NEW CHARACTER DETAILS ABOUT OLIVIA WILDE’S SPIDER-WOMAN FILM: EXCLUSIVE

The Illuminerdi can exclusively reveal exciting new details about Olivia Wilde’s upcoming Sony Marvel film, Spider-Woman.

Sony has been using the Marvel characters they own to continue building their Sony Marvel Universe, first with Venom in 2018 followed by an upcoming sequel, along with the new films Morbius, and Kraven The Hunter. Sony has many other Marvel films in development including an intriguing untitled project that was announced in August 2020.

Deadline broke the news that Olivia Wilde would be developing and directing a Marvel film focusing on a female character. The report also revealed that the film will be produced by Amy Pascal and written by Katie Silberman, who co-wrote Wilde’s directorial debut Booksmart and her upcoming film Don’t Worry Darling. Numerous rumors have circled this project with the expectation being that Wilde will be tackling Spider-Woman in this highly anticipated film.

The Illuminerdi has been digging into Sony’s Marvel Universe, recently learning that one of the villains in Kraven will be his half-brother Chameleon. And now we’ve discovered new details about Olivia Wilde’s upcoming film.

The Illuminerdi has been able to confirm with our sources that Olivia Wilde’s project is not only going to be a Spider-Woman film as expected, but that it will follow the original Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew.

According to our sources the character will be staying true to the original Spider-Woman’s origins even tying in her memory loss, although in the comics this is tied to Hydra, which will presumably not be the case in the film. What is interesting is that it looks like they are looking to cast a 25-35 year old actress. This could mean that Jessica awakens as an adult instead of a teenager, or it could be set years after she first wakes from the genetic accelerator.

Over the years many heroes have taken on the moniker Spider-Woman including Julia Carpenter, Gwen Stacy, and Mary Jane Watson, but the first Spider-Woman, originally introduced in 1978, was Jessica Drew. The first Spider-Woman debuted in Marvel Spotlight #32 and after the comic sold surprisingly well she earned her own 50 issue self-titled comic book series.

Jessica Drew’s origins are unique, unlike the typical radioactive spider bite, at a young age Jessica was exposed to uranium for months and became extremely ill. Jessica’s father, a scientist, injected her with an untested serum that was created with the irradiated blood of many different species of spiders. Jessica was then sealed in a genetic accelerator, due to the serum needing to incubate, where her age was decelerated. Jessica awoke in the accelerator decades later and in the comics was only 17 years old.

When she awoke Jessica Drew had many new powers including wall-crawling, superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, and numerous others which includes her famed venom blasts, controlled discharges of bio-electricity. Jessica Drew has had an interesting run in her comic history being brainwashed by Hydra, working as a bounty hunter, private investigator, becoming a New Avenger, and much more.

Spider-Woman is a character with an intriguing origin that has a lot of exciting potential, waking up as a young woman decades after she was essentially put in stasis as a child. This gives Wilde the opportunity to explore the character as she navigates the new world she has woken up in and her new powers. With opportunities for humor, drama, action, and more this will be a great film for Wilde to show off her abilities as a director. And with more female heroes leading their own films and women taking the helm as writers and directors Spider-Woman joins an impressive and ever growing group of heroes.

Are you excited to see Olivia Wilde’s Spider-Woman? Are you happy the film will follow the original Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew? What do you hope to see in the new Spider-Woman movie? Leave your thoughts in the comments below or on our social media and check back with The Illuminerdi for more Spider-Woman and Marvel news.
