Mentre la postproduzione di Cowboys and Aliens procede a ritmo serrato, Jon Favreau pensa già al suo prossimo progetto, ovvero Magic Kingdom, che dirigerà per la Walt Disney Pictures.

Le riprese dovrebbero iniziare già a fine anno, e attualmente Favreau sta lavorando per ottenere lo script migliore possibile: l'Hollywood Reporter rivela infatti che il regista ha chiesto alla Disney di affidare al premio Pulizter Michael Chabon il compito di riscrivere la sceneggiatura, originariamente scritta da Ron Moore (produttore di Battlestar Galactica). Secondo il sito, la Disney non ha ancora fatto offerte, ma potrebbe farle molto presto perché Jon Favreau sta premendo molto per collaborare con Chabon, il quale ha già messo mano a numerosi altri script di film Disney (senza essere accreditato) tra cui John Carter of Mars e Tron Legacy.

La trama originale del film vede una famiglia intrappolata a Disneyland, dove tutte le attrazioni prendono vita.

Michael Chabon has been tapped to write Magic Kingdom, Disney’s family adventure project that is being directed by Jon Favreau.

Heat Vision first reported the author's possible involvement in March, when the Pulitzer Prize-winning author initially talked with Favreau about it but before any meetings with Disney had taken place.

Since then, deal-making quietly got under way and an agreement closed this week.

Chabon will now begin tackling a story whose details are being kept under wraps but is set in Disney’s flagship theme park and may even be connected to other parks worldwide.

STORY: Jon Favreau Set to Direct 'Magic Kingdom' for Disney

Ron Moore, who revived the recent Battlestar Galactica TV series, wrote the initial draft but Kingdom re-routed into a different direction when Favreau came on board.

Strike Entertainment is producing Magic Kingdom.

Chabon is a big Disney aficionado and spent time at the Anaheim park with Favreau. He worked on the studio’s high-priority Snow White project titled The Order of the Seven as well as its upcoming adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs book series John Carter of Mars. He is also penning the book for the Broadway-bound Dumbo musical.

STORY: Darren Aronofsky Set to Direct HBO Pilot 'Hobgoblin'

In non-Disney matters, Chabon and his wife, author Ayelet Waldman, are developing an HBO pilot titled Hobgoblin, which Darren Aronofsky will direct.

Chabon is repped by UTA, publishing agent Mary Evans, and attorney David Colden.

Pixar is Helping with Jon Favreau's 'Magic Kingdom'

Jon Favreau reveals Pixar's involvement with his theme park fantasy, his ideas for the story and why you'll just have to wait to see it.

After we got the scoop on his original John Carter plans, we spoke with director Jon Favreau again at the NBC Television Critics Association cocktail party. Favreau directed the pilot for their new series “Revolution,” but we steered the conversation towards his Magic Kingdom film for Disney. Favreau was happy to explain why we may have to wait a while for this one, and that will be a good thing.

“I went back to back to back with three movies in a row, Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Cowboys & Aliens, all of them with release dates announced as I walked in,” Favreau said. “As I cracked the script for the first time we already knew the date and the poster, in some cases the cast. On this one, Magic Kingdom is a big film. It’s a very special piece of intellectual property with all the characters from the park and the legacy of Walt Disney.”

The film will be based on Disneyland’s Magic Kingdom theme park, but Favreau says the storytelling development of the film is inspired by Pixar. Pixar develops their stories for years before investing in animation production, because they can afford the time to craft the story, and sometimes go back to the drawing board midway through.

“What we’ve been doing is writing a script, going up to Pixar, meeting with the brain trust, coming back down, bringing on artists, story editors and putting it together as though it were an animated film so that by the time we actually film it, we’ll have a rock solid story,” Favreau continued. “I don’t want to rush anything. I want this thing to be perfect. I want it to be one shot one kill, like a sniper. I want to make sure this movie’s right in the crosshairs that we can really knock it out of the park so to speak.”

To be clear, Magic Kingdom is not a Pixar film. However, John Lasseter has introduced the Disney production to the Pixar staff and let the synergy flow.

“As far as I know it’s a Disney production but they’ve been very good about Pixar,” Favreau said. “[I've known] Lasseter for many years now. It’s our first time collaborating together but he’s opened up all the resources of Pixar. I’ve been up there a few times now and stayed up at the ranch. It’s just been a dream come true. Taking a tour of Pixar is special enough but to sit in a room and pitch to those people and hear their ideas, it’s very, very exciting. I want to learn as much as I can from them and hopefully have their success in storytelling that they do as well by learning from their process. I really want to hold this film to a very high standard so I’m not rushing it but it’s coming along very well.”

The story as it exists so far is this: “It’s going to be a family in the park. It’s an alternate reality version of the park that they get launched into. So much of it is just how it weaves together as a tapestry and what the visuals look like in creating this rich world. It’s informed by everything that I remember and know about the park from going there since I was a small child.”

Classic and current Disneyland attractions are all under consideration as elements in the film. One Disney Geek even suggested Club 33. “Club 33 is something that we’ve been discussing. I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the vulture in Club 33 as a character. There’s a lot of ideas swirling around now. I don’t know which ones are going to make it in but it’s definitely informed primarily by Walt’s vision of the park, even before and immediately after it opened. A lot of it for people our age there’ll be a nostalgic element to it. People who know Disneyland are going to see that we did our homework, but then it’s ultimately an adventure that’s going to be for the family and for the kids too. I had a lot of fun playing to that type of crowd with Elf and Zathura. This seems to be mixing elements from all the films I’ve done, from Iron Man, Cowboys & Aliens, Zathura, Elf all rolled into one project that really is calling upon everything I’ve learned up to this point.”

But you’ll have to wait to see this, because that’s how Pixar does it. “Fortunately there’s no rush on it. I’ve been working on it as a writer now and we’re looking forward to beginning that long lead prep as you would on an animated film. Then you work your way to where you know what the whole movie is going to be before you ever roll camera. You actually watch it as the Pixar people do and actually watch it on a screen and evaluate it before you ever roll camera.”

In una nuova intervista a Crave Online realizzata durante il party del TCA in occasione della presentazione di Revolution, il regista Jon Favreau ha finalmente svelato qualche informazione su Magic Kingdom, il progetto che da diverso tempo sta sviluppando alla Disney:

Ho diretto tre film di seguito: Iron Man, Iron Man 2 e Cowboy and Aliens, tutti quanti con date d'uscita già fissate quando sono stato coinvolto. A volte capitava che ci fosse già un poster mentre stavamo finendo la prima sceneggiatura, o addirittura il cast. In questo caso, Magic Kingdom è un film colossale, ha un ruolo importantissimo come proprietà intellettuale di tutti i personaggi del parco a tema e dell'eredità di Walt Disney.

La storia, a quanto pare, è stata ispirata nientemeno che dalla Pixar, che sviluppa le sue storie anni prima di iniziare a produrre un film, potendosi permettere di dedicare il giusto tempo:

Quello che abbiamo fatto è stato scrivere la sceneggiatura, andare alla Pixar, incontrare il Brain Trust (il gruppo di creativi alla base di tutti i progetti dello studio), tornare indietro, coinvolgere artisti e story editor, mettere tutto insieme come se si trattasse di un film di animazione in modo che quando inizieremo le riprese avremo una storia davvero forte. Non voglio correre, voglio che questo film sia perfetto. Voglio partire a colpo sicuro. Voglio che questo film esca bene.



John Lasseter stesso ha presentato il film allo staff della Pixar, in modo da far sì che vi fossero le giuste influenze su di esso:

Per quanto ne so io è e rimane un prodotto della disney, ma c'è stata una infuenza della Pixar. Conosco Lasseter da diversi anni ormai, anche se è la nostra prima collaborazione; mi ha messo a disposizione tutte le risorse della Pixar, sono stato da loro diverse volte: è un sogno che diventa realtà. [...] Voglio imparare il più possibile da loro e avere lo stesso successo loro nel raccontare una storia, imparando il loro processo creativo. Per me questo film deve avere degli standard molto alti, e francamente sta venendo molto bene.

La storia racconterà le vicende di una famiglia nel parco Magic Kingdom. Vengono lanciati in una versione alternativa del parco: molta importanza ha, nel film, l'aspetto visivo che daremo a questo mondo.



Nel film saranno presenti attrazioni di Disneyland del passato e del presente:

Abbiamo anche discusso l'introduzione del Club 33, ma le idee al momento sono parecchie, non so quali rimarranno. L'impostazione sarà comunque coerente con la visione originale di Walt Disney del parco, ancora prima di quella che venne presentata all'apertura del parco. Molte persone della mia età ci troveranno un elemento nostalgico: chi conosce Disneyland noterà che abbiamo svolto bene i nostri compiti, ma alla fine rimane una grande avventura.



Il film sta entrando adesso in una lunga fase di pre-produzione, proprio come fosse un film d'animazione. Probabilmente non si parlerà di riprese almeno per un altro annetto: vi terremo aggiornati...

Jon Favreu deve rifarsi dopo aver diretto un capolavoro come Iron Man (perfetto) e un buon film come Iron Man 2 (non all'altezza del primo a parer mio). Cowboys & Aliens ha fatto acqua da tutte le parti peccato visto che il soggetto non era malvagio ma la realizzazione è stata pessima a partire dagli alieni veramente ridicoli e non si capiscono tutti quei soldi spesi da Universal.Paramount e Dreamworks per la realizzazione, John Carter è fatto meglio al confronto. Vedo che Favreu ha imparato la lezione e vuole dirigere questo film appena trova la storia.Il coinvolgimento della Pixar non mi sorprende la Pixar è stata coinvolta per Tron Legacy,I Muppet e lo sfortunato John Carter e mi fa piacere che le due case continuano a lavorare insieme anche se il marchio Pixar rimarrà e solo (giustamente) per prodotti d'animazione.Il progetto va avanti bene così poi Lasseter ci vive dentro i parchi Disney li supervisiona, non mi sorprende che l'idea è sua.

A few years ago, it was announced that Jon Favreau was teaming up with Disney for MAGIC KINGDOM, a live-action, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM-esque fantasy set at Disneyland wherein all of the company's famous characters come to life. There hasn't been a lot of movement on this project since 2012, but while attending SXSW 2014 with his new movie CHEF, Favreau told Collider's Steve Weintraub that it's still a possibility - though not until Favreau completes his live-action adaptation of THE JUNGLE BOOK.

Here's what Favs had to say:

I really want to do Magic Kingdom. Part of what’s complicated about it is you’re mixing all of the different lands and characters together but between The Avengers and The Lego Movie, there seems to be a way to do it that doesn’t confuse the audience. Hopefully I’ll get to make that movie with Disney soon. Right now Jungle Book is the thing and hopefully through that partnership it’ll lead to getting the other film done because I think Magic Kingdom is a great idea for a film.

It's certainly a brilliant promotional tool for Disney, and I imagine that they're looking long and hard at the success of THE LEGO MOVIE as they conemplate whether to move forward with this. I hope they do, if only becasue the Splash Mountain denizens will have to come to life, which means we'll get to see our favorite SONG OF THE SOUTH characters!

What’s the status of Magic Kingdom?

JON FAVREAU: Well hopefully now with this collaboration if it works out well we can explore what Magic Kingdom could be. Magic Kingdom is a story I’ve been developing. Michael Chabon wrote the draft about Disneyland coming to life, and all of the different lands and attractions all overlapping one another and creating a big adventure that a family gets caught up in. It’s something I feel very passionate about. Part of the reason I explored this technology I used on Jungle Book is because I was considering it for that film, and maybe it might be something we work together on.
