Alien Band: The Battle of the Bands Just Got Ugly (Vanguard Animation produced)

Williams ramps up the live-action part of his business as Vanguard Animation goes into production with "Space Chimps 3D," a sequel to Vanguard's 2008 film. The sequel will go straight to DVD in the U.S. through Fox and be released theatrically overseas. Vanguard Animation is also ramping up its next animated feature with "Alien Band: The Battle of the Bands Just Got Ugly."

Scripted by Allan Piper and Chris Pearson ("The Enthusiasts"), "Alien Band" is a comedy about a garage band from a backwater planet that enters an intergalactic Battle of the Bands contest. Former Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart is putting together established rock bands that will provide the tunes for the bands in competition. Stewart will be executive producer and music producer, and Williams is finalizing the film's financing.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=57571

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment are turning the Dr. Seuss book "The Lorax" into a 3-D CG animated feature, reports Variety.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax will be co-directed by Chris Renaud and Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio, with Paul & Daurio writing the script.

"The Lorax" is narrated by a greedy entrepreneur who, despite warnings from the tree-loving Lorax, strips a forest of its stock of Truffula trees to manufacture clothing. The results are catastrophic as all the animals leave and nothing's left.

The picture is targeted for a March 2, 2012, release, which falls on the birthday of Theodor Geisel, who died in 1991.

Rats of NIMH
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=57538

Paramount is developing a feature version of Robert C. O'Brien's award-winning children's tale "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH," says The Hollywood Reporter.

Director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) is in talks to write the screenplay, and former Walden executive Cary Granat is on board to produce.

The film would be the second theatrical go-round for the book, which MGM brought to the screen in 1982 as the animated The Secret of NIMH, directed by Don Bluth.

The story centers on a mouse -- the titular Mrs. Frisby, re-named Mrs. Brisby in the MGM movie -- faced with a crisis when her son falls ill and she must move her family to escape a farmer's plow.

Mrs. Frisby enlists a group of former lab rats, whom she soon discovers run a highly evolved society, who possess advanced technologies and divide labor in the manner of a human community.

Leaf Men

Wedge turns over new 'Leaf' at Fox
Blue Sky Studios to produce feature toon
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Chris Wedge

The development comes after a fascinating tug-of-war over the project between Fox, Blue Sky Studios co-founder Wedge and Disney-based animation rival Pixar.

"Leaf Men," an adaptation of the William Joyce illustrated children's book "The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs," was originally set at Fox Animation by Wedge, his "Robots" cohort Joyce and screenwriter Jim Hart.

Wedge at some point got the studio's blessing to find a new home for the picture. He turned to Pixar. Wedge has a close relationship with the label's topper, John Lasseter, dating back to their beginnings on "Tron."

Disney and Pixar jumped and got as far as thinking they had a deal with Wedge. But when they moved to close with Fox on the project's underlying rights, Pixar, Wedge and his UTA reps were surprised to discover that Fox wasn't letting go of "Leaf Men" after all.

A Fox spokesman would not comment on the back and forth with Pixar, saying only that Fox Animation has now greenlit the film and is glad that Wedge remains in the studio fold.

The "Leaf Men" book focuses on a troop of bugs that try to save a garden and need to battle an evil spider queen. The bugs turn to the mythical Leaf Men to help them.

Sources in the animation community who followed Wedge's near move to Pixar said it would have been unusual to see him spend the next several years making an animated film for a rival, since he's so closely identified with Blue Sky and its role in making Fox a family film powerhouse.

But Wedge -- who directed the original Oscar-winning "Ice Age" and then "Robots" -- has been focused on his own directing career for some time, developing such live-action projects as "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" at Warner Bros. Blue Sky has a strong bench of directors topped by Carlos Saldanha, who co-directed the second and third "Ice Age" films, and who is prepping Blue Sky's next major animated effort, "Rio."

Spore

Fox and EA Adapting Spore Game
Source:Variety
October 2, 2009

20th Century Fox has teamed up with Electronic Arts to turn the publisher's popular "Spore" game into an animated creature feature, with Chris Wedge (Ice Age) attached to direct.

Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, who penned Disney's upcoming The Princess and the Frog and Ben Stiller pic The Return of King Doug at Paramount, will write the script for the movie. It will be produced as a CG-animated toon by EA and Blue Sky Studios.

In the game, which was released in September 2008, players create their own creatures and the worlds they live in and share them with other gamers to create an overall universe.

"I'm always looking for unique worlds to go to in animation," Wedge said. "From every perspective -- visually, thematically and comedically -- the world of 'Spore' provides the potential to put something truly original on the screen."

Last week, the Fox locked down the animated film Leaf Men for Wedge to direct and Blue Sky to produce.

Peter Ramsey to Direct DreamWorks Animation’s ‘The Guardians’

Wed, Nov 4, 2009

3D Animation Projects, Animated Movies, Animation Business, Animation News

DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. today announced that Peter Ramsey, director of the Company’s hit Halloween special, “Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space,” is set to direct “The Guardians,” (working title) the previously announced film based on “The Guardians of Childhood,” a series of highly anticipated children’s books by William Joyce. Pulitzer Prize winning writer David Lindsay-Abaire has signed on to write the script.

In addition to directing “Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space,” Ramsey served as Head of Story on DreamWorks Animation’s “Monsters vs. Aliens” and has served as a storyboard artist on a number of live action feature films. Lindsay-Abaire was most recently nominated for a Tony Award® for his Book and Lyrics for “Shrek The Musical.” His Pulitzer Prize winning play, “The Rabbit Hole” has been made into a feature film, for which he wrote the script.

The project will be produced by Christina Steinberg and Nancy Bernstein and executive produced by Michael Siegel, Joyce’s manager. DreamWorks Animation acquired the property from Reel FX where the characters and the world of “The Guardians of Childhood” were developed in a partnership with William Joyce. Joyce will also serve as co-director. DreamWorks Animation’s “The Guardians” (working title) is scheduled to be released on November 2, 2012.

“The Guardians of Childhood” is a multi-story saga detailing the adventures of the immortal Guardians, who are sworn to protect children from the forces of evil. The books will be published as a series that features Joyce’s distinctive illustrations and chronicles the origins of several childhood mythic figures, including Santa Claus, Jack Frost, The Easter Bunny and The Man in the Moon. Each book will highlight one character and will serve as back stories for characters that will be the subject of the full length feature film version.

DreamWorks Animation Co-President of Production, Bill Damaschke, commented, “We are thrilled that David Lindsay-Abaire is joining director Peter Ramsey and the rest of the all-star creative team at DreamWorks Animation to bring William Joyce’s spectacular stories to cinematic life when the film arrives in theaters on November 2, 2012.”
Publication of the book series is set to begin in 2011 and subsequent books will be published in yearly installments thereafter.

Untitled Jack Black Cryptozoology Movie (Illumination Entertainment produced)

Jack Black animates film pitch
Meledandri's Illumination draws in toon
By MICHAEL FLEMING

Jack Black, whose last foray into animation was the hit "Kung Fu Panda," is the centerpiece of an untitled animated film pitch that Illumination Entertainment, Chris Meledandri's Universal-based family film unit, is acquiring preemptively.

The untitled pitch is centered in the world of cryptozoology, which is the search for legendary creatures whose existence has never actually been confirmed, like the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot.

Pitch was made by scribe Jason Micallef, with Black in the room. Black will produce with partner Ben Cooley through their Electric Dynamite banner, along with Meledandri. Black is only aboard as producer and will not provide a voice in the film. It is Black's first animation project as producer, but he and Cooley are producers on the Black starrer "Gulliver's Travels" and the docu "Branson." Black's previous producing credits include "Nacho Libre" and "Tenacious D In the Pick of Destiny."

He is separately reprising for the "Kung Fu Panda" sequel and lent his voice to "Shark Tale" and the first installment of "Ice Age."

Micallef previously wrote "Butter," a script that made the Black List, and has Jennifer Garner attached with Michael De Luca producing. Micallef, and Underground Films' Josh McGuire, most recently rewrote "The King of Kong" for New Line.

Illumination's first major animation release is "Despicable Me," which Universal releases July 9. Steve Carell provides the lead voice, and Jason Segel, Danny McBride, Julie Andrews and Russell Brand also voice characters.

Norm of the North (Crest Animation produced/Lionsgate distributed)
Lionsgate and Crest Animation Making Norm
Source:Lionsgate
February 1, 2010

Lionsgate announced today that it will partner with Crest Animation Studios to co-produce the stereoscopic 3D animated family feature Norm of the North as the second film in ther three-picture deal. Lionsgate will distribute in North America. The announcement was jointly made today by Joe Drake, Lionsgate Co-Chief Operating Officer and Motion Picture Group President; Mike Paseornek, Lionsgate President of Motion Picture Production; Ken Katsumoto, Lionsgate Executive Vice President of Family Entertainment; Noah Fogelson, CEO of Crest Animation Productions; and Seemha Ramanna, Managing Director Crest Animation Studios.

Norm of the North is written by Steven and Daniel Altiere. Delivery is anticipated for the first quarter of 2012. Katsumoto will oversee the production for Lionsgate; Crest Animation President of Production Richard Rich will oversee for Crest.

The first film in the Lionsgate/Crest partnership is the upcoming CGI animated family feature Alpha and Omega, featuring the voices of Justin Long, Hayden Panetierre, Christina Ricci, Danny Glover, Dennis Hopper and Larry Miller. Directed by Anthony Bell and Ben Gluck, Alpha and Omega is expected to premiere in October 2010.

Said Paseornek and Katsumoto, "Our partnership with Crest has gotten off to a terrific start with 'Alpha and Omega,' and 'Norm of the North' is an ideal follow-up. In its range of characters, locations and narrative, 'Norm of the North' offers a bounty of riches for family audiences."

"We are delighted to be producing 'Norm of the North' with our friends at Lionsgate," commented Fogelson. "This is a wonderful story, full of humor and heart, and stereoscopic 3D technology will bring it vividly to life."

In the film, Norm is a Polar Bear who finds shelter in an abandoned research station when his Arctic home begins cracking and collapsing beneath him. He is accompanied by three Arctic Lemmings, sidekicks who instinctively copy Norm's every move. Norm enjoys this immensely as he has a love of entertaining, and an aversion to the mundane work in his community. All in all, life is good for our heroes; plenty of food, warmth, and aerobic dancing DVDs, which also help Norm perfect his "moves." But as the polar ice caps continue mysteriously breaking apart, their temporary home is abruptly dislodged, setting Norm and the lemmings on a journey that ends in NYC. Here Norm is discovered by the head of a multinational company and becomes their mascot. Suddenly Norm is living his performing dream as a dancing star. Unfortunately, he also soon learns the polar ice caps are continuing to break apart, and the people that made his dream come true are responsible. Norm knows he must stop them before they destroy his home, a realization that forces him to choose between life in the spotlight and his entire Polar Bear community.

Quindi adesso anche Lionsgate si mette a fare animazione? Basta, non se ne può più, già adesso in certi periodi esce un film d'animazione a settimana! E questa Crest, mai sentita nominare; sono bravi?

The Addams Family (Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment)

Tim Burton's Next 3D Animated Film? Da Da Da Da, Snap Snap: 'The Addams Family'
By MIKE FLEMING | Thursday March 18, 2010 @ 11:13am EST
Comments 70 Email This | Print This | Bookmark and Share

addams-cartoonEXCLUSIVE: Alice in Wonderland director Tim Burton has found a new 3D project. He will direct a stop-motion animated film based on Charles Addams' original ghoulish cartoon drawings of The Addams Family. Illumination Entertainment, the Universal-based family film unit headed by Chris Meledandri, has acquired the underlying rights of the Addams drawings, once a staple of The New Yorker magazine.

Burton's intention is to go back to the litany of Addams illustrations that displayed a sharper wit than seen on the big or little screen before. Other than being inspired by the same source material, the animated feature is unrelated to previous incarnations of Addams’ work: the 1960s TV series, the two 1990s feature film comedies that Barry Sonnenfeld directed with Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston, or the Broadway musical opening this spring with Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth in the starring roles.6a00d8345157d269e200e54f7038368833-

Meladandri will produce the film. Kevin Miserocchi of the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation will be executive producer. A writer will be hired shortly. Burton, whose visual creations are currently on display at a MOMA exhibit that opened last November, is expected to provide much of the visual look of the film himself.

Burton’s experience in animated film is extensive. He last directed Corpse Bride, and is making a feature version of Frankenweenie, the 1984 30-minute short film Burton made about a boy who reanimates his dead dog. That reportedly got him tossed off the Disney lot for making a film too terrifying for a family audience, but the film has since become a cult favorite. Burton recently produced 9, as well as the delightful stop-motion animated The Nightmare Before Christmas, for which he wrote the story.

tim-burton-the-nightmare-before-christmas-3d-world-premiere-khwujlWhile there are many post-Green Zone articles speculating how Universal will pull itself out of an extended feature slump, Illumination's upcoming animated slate should be a big help in giving Universal a foothold in the 3D CG family entertainment market. Meledandri left the top post at Fox Animation to form Illumination in 2007, and begins contributing to the Universal pipeline when the studio releases the Steve Carell-voiced Despicable Me on July 9. That’s followed by the April 1, 2011 release of I Hop, with Russell Brand voicing the Easter Bunny, with the Ricky Gervais creation Flanimals coming later 2011. Right behind that is Where’s Waldo and Dr.Seuss’ The Lorax.

Popeye (Sony Picture Animation)

Sony Making a CG Popeye Film in 3D
Source: Variety
March 23, 2010

Sony Pictures is developing a CG Popeye feature to be released in 3D. Avi Arad is producing and Mike Jones is in negotiations to write the script.

The storyline is being kept under wraps, but Popeye's love interest Olive Oyl, nemesis Bluto and adopted child Swee'Pea will be part of the adventure, says Variety.

Arad says the new version will cover the themes of friendship, love, greed and life, and focus on human strengths and human frailties.

Popeye will be made by Sony Pictures Animation, with Sony Pictures Imageworks handling the CG. The companies are currently working on The Smurfs, coming to theaters on August 3, 2011.

Created by E.C. Segar, Popeye first appeared in the already established "Thimble Theater" comic strip in 1929. Introduced as a walk-on character, Popeye eventually became the strip's star.

Popeye was last seen on the big screen in 1980 when Robin Williams starred in director Robert Altman's live-action version.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Sony is getting into the roller-coaster theme park business ... sort of.

Film

Sony Pictures Animation has pre-emptively picked up rights to the Atari video game "Rollercoaster Tycoon," and is developing the project as a live-action/CGI hybrid.

The "Tycoon" franchise, created by Chris Sawyer, is a popular series of computer games that simulate a combination of designing roller coasters and amusement park management. Each game challenges players with open-ended amusement park management and development while allowing them to construct and customize their own unique roller coasters.

The games are popular in the PC world, generating more than $300 million in sales and giving Atari bragging rights for having the third-best-selling PC title of all time in the U.S.

Harald Zwart is spearheading the development of the big-screen adaptation as a possible directing project and will executive produce. He directed Sony's "The Karate Kid," the upcoming remake of the 1980s classic that is produced by Will Smith and stars his son Jaden Smith.
