The Weinstein Company is gearing up for its biggest year of family friendly entertainment yet with multiple animated films coming to theaters in 2013. In addition to ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH, upcoming releases include: SANTAPPRENTICE, THE TRICK OR TREATERS and LEO THE LION.

Rio Sequel (BlueSky)

http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Rio-Sequel-...ight-29054.html
Rio Sequel Likely To Take Flight
5 Comments published: 2012-01-26 05:50:06 Author: Sean O'Connell

The animated Rio crossed the $140-million mark at the domestic box office. It scored positive reviews (more than 70% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). And on Tuesday morning, it earned an Oscar nomination. All of those suggest the potential for a sequel, which we now hear is on the horizon.

OK, so the Oscar nomination was for Sergio Mendes’ original song “Real In Rio,” and not quite for the film’s vibrant animation. Yet it was Mendes who revealed to HitFix that Rio director Carlos Saldanha is moving forward on a sequel, and he might have come up with a natural tie-in to an actual, global event.
"I think the plan is for the movie to come three or four months before the World Cup," Mendes said. The 2014 World Cup takes place in Brazil, where the original Rio was set. "Fox has been talking about (it) and it looks like it's going to happen. We're going to have a meeting I think next week and Carlos is coming to town to tell us the story, and it looks like it's a go."

Fox studio reps did say that no script deals have been set, but it sounds like the ball is rolling. Far worse animated sequels have received sequels. Many go right to DVD, so this is a step up for Saldanha’s colorful creation. He’s also extremely versed in the franchise game, having co-directed the Ice Age films. I’m actually surprised at how those films have held steady – and even improved – with each new film, so let’s hope Rio 2 expands on the bird-centric universe … and offers up another kick-ass soundtrack of Brazilian dance tunes.

LEGO (Animal Logic produced/Warner distributed)
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=87698

Exclusive: Miller & Lord Give LEGO & Cloudy 2 Updates
Source: Edward Douglas March 4, 2012

In 2009, filmmakers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord made their mark with the Sony Animation hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and while their live action directorial debut, the Jonah Hill-Channing Tatum action-comedy 21 Jump Street, comes out on March 16, they still have their hands in animation as they move forward on development with the planned LEGO movie for Warner Bros. and are involved with the "Cloudy" sequel, currently (and tentatively) called Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers.

ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk with Miller and Lord and get some updates on those other projects, especially their LEGO movie since there were and are still a lot of questions about what this movie is going to be since the project was first announced.

They're still working on developing the story with Animal Logic in Australia and co-director Chris McKay working with a unit in Los Angeles and Lord explained the approach they're taking with the film as "CGI with a stop motion feel to it and it's really weird in a great way."

"We're really building stuff with real LEGOs for the character design phase and the vehicle designs," Miller said. "We have LEGO experts and people literally building stuff and a room filled with LEGOs and the storyboard artist making things and shooting them on their phones, it's pretty nuts."

Since "Cloudy" took a long time to get made, we wondered whether this would be the same case with the LEGO movie and we might not see it for another three years.

"We want to release it sooner than that and we have a great team and we're moving really quickly, the animatics are turning around really fast," Lord said. "One of the things that's lucky about McKay is that his background is as an editor so we've introduced editing into the process a lot sooner than we probably otherwise would."

The filmmakers also addressed some of the skepticism people have had about the movie being an extended advertising for the LEGO brand.

"The thing about it is obviously it's not a big LEGO commercial for products," Miller told us. "LEGOs are the medium that we're using to tell a story. If you've seen any of those brick films online people make in their basement, it's sort of one of those but with a much bigger budget, as if somebody had a really big basement and a lot of time."

"One of the ways we like to think about it is that it's a medium, not a brand," Lord chimed in.

"It's not like they're selling clay when they do a claymation movie, so it's sort of like that," Miller finished the thought. "We're telling an interesting story and the medium we're using to tell it is these little LEGO bricks and these little characters."

Since the duo have been busy finishing up and promoting 21 Jump Street, we were curious how involved they've been in developing Sony Animation's planned sequel to their hit animated movie.

"We worked on the treatment for the story and we chose the guys who are directing it, who was our head of story (Kris Pearn) and one of the lead storyboard artists (Cody Cameron) from the first one," Miller said. "They're great, very talented and funny guys and we knew they would really do a great job with it."

"We have the same design team of the movie with some amazing additions, and the character designs are even crazier. The movie's going to look even better. It's really insane," Lord continued.

We were most curious whether the subversive humor from the first movie, which Miller and Lord developed for many years, would carry over into the sequel.

"That's the best thing about the animatics we've already seen and the early work that's been done, is that it's already really funny," Lord said, and Miller agrees that they're doing a great job capturing that distinctive tone.

Look for the rest of our interview with the directors of 21 Jump Street sometime before the movie opens on March 16.

NOTE: There was some confusion in the original story about the status of Animal Logic and its relation to Happy Feet 2, since it was the animation house who did the original movie but we've since been corrected in our misunderstanding of the situation and the article has been updated accordingly.

Tonka (Sony Pictures Animation)
http://www.deadline.com/2012/06/sony-to-ma...animated-movie/

Sony To Make Tonka Trucks Animated Pic

By MIKE FLEMING | Monday June 11, 2012 @ 2:51pm EDT
Tags: Hasbro, Sony Pictures, Tonka

COMMENTS 23

Sony Pictures has jumped aboard the Hasbro bandwagon that Universal jumped off of. Sony is developing the animated film Tonka, based on the 65-year-old kiddie car brand. The studio announced the arrangement in a press release, with Sony Pictures Animation and Happy Madison Productions producing the movie with Hasbro. Adam Sandler and Jack Giarraputo’s Happy Madison is also producing a movie version of Hasbro’s Candy Land for Sony, and the studio is separately developing Hasbro’s Risk.

Conspicuously absent from the press release is Hasbro’s most recent credit, Battleship, the Universal Pictures summer tentpole wannabe that bore little resemblance to the board game and sank loudly at the box office. Universal has put the majority of Hasbro properties into turnaround — including the priority project Stretch Armstrong as well as Clue; Monopoly; and Magic, The Gathering – a disappointing result for a strategic alliance between the studio and the toymaker’s film production arm made when brands were considered big for studios. It has been hit or miss for Hasbro in Hollywood. While Battleship was a failure, the Hasbro toy line Transformers turned into a billion-dollar franchise by sticking close to the core appeal of the toy and then creating something very watchable onscreen.

Can Sony succeed in the Hasbro brand game where Universal failed? The studio must be getting a better deal than the rich first dollar gross pact that Hasbro got paid by Universal (the film Ouija was dropped by Universal over its $100 million budget, and then was brought back at the studio when it was reconfigured at a $5 million budget). Paramount is going through some turmoil on the other major Hasbro property, G.I. Joe, which had its release date pushed as the studio tries to solve problems on the film. All this means that playing the branding game is perilous for studios, unless there is a definite loyalty to that brand, and a filmmaker like Michael Bay who really knows how to make the movie equivalent of a theme-park ride with the spectacle and the humor. Peter Berg is just not that director. Here’s Sony’s release:

CULVER CITY, Calif., June 11, 2012 – TONKA, the Hasbro brand that for 65 years has stood for its line of toy trucks for children, will bring its TONKA toughness to the big screen in a fully animated motion picture to be produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Hasbro and Happy Madison Productions. The announcement was made today by Bob Osher, president, Sony Pictures Digital Productions, Michelle Raimo-Kouyate, president of Production for Sony Pictures Animation and Brian Goldner, president and CEO of Hasbro. The film will also be produced and developed by Goldner and Hasbro’s senior vice president and managing director of motion pictures, Bennett Schneir and will be written by Fred Wolf.

The new TONKA project strengthens the growing ties between Sony Pictures and Hasbro, following the announcements that Sony Pictures is developing motion pictures based on Hasbro’s RISK and CANDY LAND brands. CANDY LAND is also a Happy Madison project.

Commenting on the announcement, Osher said, “In its 65 years, TONKA has become more than a toy or a brand – TONKA trucks are a rite of passage for kids all around the world. Time spent with these toys creates memories that last a lifetime as kids are inspired to play using the boundaries of their imagination. We look forward to creating a family friendly motion picture that brings the TONKA experience to life.”

Raimo-Kouyate added, “Fred and our friends at Happy Madison and Hasbro have a truly inventive take on what it means to be ‘TONKA tough’ that will translate the multi-generational appeal of this world-renowned brand into a fun animated adventure for the whole family.”

“We’re thrilled to be working with Bob, Michelle, and the amazing team of artists and storytellers at Sony Pictures Animation,” said Schneir. “Together with Happy Madison, we’re excited to bring TONKA trucks to life in a terrific story for audiences around the world.”

One of the most recognized brands in Hasbro’s portfolio, TONKA has been the bestselling toy truck globally since 1947. Giving children real-life, relatable experiences, TONKA trucks help kids learn the confidence to get the job done.

Deep (Valve Corporation produced)

http://screenrant.com/shane-acker-valve-de...178699/?_r=true

’9′ Director Teaming With Valve for Post-Apocalyptic Animated Film, ‘Deep’
Jun 11, 2012 by Sandy Schaefer

Three years ago, animator Shane Acker made his feature-length directorial debut with 9 - a big screen treatment of his Oscar-nominated short. It was a moderate financial success, grossing $48 million worldwide on a $30 million budget, and received mixed-to-positive marks from critics for its expanded version of the simple story featured in Acker’s original work (read out review, for additional insight).

However, what the 9 feature managed to do unequivocally is establish Acker as someone capable of creating mesmerizing CGI imagery – and constructing an alternate/sci-fi world that is unmistakably HIS, rather than the handiwork of producers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.

That’s all context for today’s announcement that Acker is teaming up with the Valve Corporation video game development and digital distribution company on a new computer-animated feature, titled Deep. According to the Chicago Tribune, Deep will employ Valve’s game production technology – used for series like Half-Life and Team Fortress - which will, in turn, allow for “real-time rendering, and editing, simplified character animation and economical lighting.”
Part of the logic behind said move is to prevent expenditures on Deep from rising above the relatively small $18.7 million target budget. As additional financial incentive: creating Deep with Valve’s tech also lends itself naturally to a video game tie-in – and if there’s any one trend which is all the rage in the movie biz nowadays (besides remaking/rebooting old properties), it’s releasing products with built-in multi-platform potential.

A screenshot from the 'Half-Life' series

Deep is an original story being scripted by Jack Barton Mitchell. Similar to 9, it is set in a “post-apocalyptic world, devastated by World War III”, though probably not an alternate-reality Earth, like in 9. The storyline follows the adventures of Sullivan, a nuclear submarine captain who discovers that a race of “super scientific intelligence” (called the Wayfarers) can save the planet from complete destruction – but at what cost, is the question.

As mentioned before: Acker’s involvement with Deep will ensure that it looks incredible, beyond the context of a digitally-animated film with a budget under $20 million. It’s also hard to knock any project that aspires to be genuinely creative from a storytelling perspective (see: our similar reaction to the Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending), and Deep tweaks familiar dystopian/sci-fi tropes just enough to warrant attention. In other words: we’ll be keeping an eye on this one.

Since Deep is only in the early stages of pre-production, it’s best to not expect any updates on the film in the near future. All the same, Screen Rant will keep you posted on any information concerning its release date – including, whether or not Valve uses its online network, Steam, as an alternative means to distribute the movie.

The Jungle Book is the first of three classic titles set to be developed and produce by India-based animation house DQ Entertainment Ireland Ltd, which kicked off its theatrical features business last year with The Prodigies for Warner Bros, Onyx Films and Fidélité Films in France. Its first film under its new feature division, which it announced today, will be based on the Rudyard Kipling tale, a $45 million stereoscopic 3D animated film already in production and targeted for a 2014 release. Animation vets Jun Falkenstein and Kevin Johnson are co-directing a script by Madagascar writer Billy Frolick. Pre- and post-production will be based in LA, with animation to be handled at DQE’s Hyderabad, India, headquarters. DQE chairman and founder Tapaas Chakravarti is producing. DreamWorks Animation today announced that Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jim Parsons ("Harvey on Broadway" and "The Big Bang Theory") and international superstar Rihanna (Battleship) will star in the leading roles in Happy Smekday!, a feature film based on the critically acclaimed book "The True Meaning of Smekday" by Adam Rex. The studio plans to release Happy Smekday! during the fourth quarter of 2014.

Tim Johnson (Over the Hedge, Antz) will serve as the film's director. Chris Jenkins (Rio, Surf's Up) and Suzanne Buirgy (Kung Fu Panda 2) are serving as producers and DreamWorks Animation's Head of Development Gregg Taylor is overseeing the project. Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember (Get Smart) are currently writing the screenplay.

"Adam's hilarious book is the perfect recipe for a compelling animated feature and we are ecstatic that Jim Parsons and Rihanna will contribute their immense talents to the production," said Bill Damaschke, DreamWorks Animation's Chief Creative Officer. "We're also thrilled that Tim Johnson is back to direct another DreamWorks Animation feature film and show the world just how fun an alien invasion can be!"

"When I read Adam Rex's remarkable book, I knew it would make an amazing film. I can't wait to introduce audiences to the unique world and characters of 'Happy Smekday!'" added Tim Johnson.

When one lowly alien accidentally notifies the enemies of his whereabouts, he is forced to go on the run with a teenage girl. The two become unlikely buddies and embark on a comical globe-trotting adventure to right his wrongs, in which our alien hero learns what it really means to be human.

La Dreamworks Animation ha scelto la Fox per la distribuzione dei suoi film a partire da marzo 2013.

Da Badtaste:

20th Century Fox distribuirà i film DreamWorks Animation

Fonte: Badtaste

Tobey Maguire to Produce and Possibly Star in CARDBOARD
by Dave Trumbore Posted: September 7th, 2012 at 1:10 pm

Cardboard Fox Animation

http://collider.com/tobey-maguire-cardboard/193956/

Actor Tobey Maguire is flexing his child-like imagination with Cardboard, an adaptation of Doug TenNapel’s graphic novel that sees cardboard creations come to life. Maguire is set to executive produce the project through his banner, Material Pictures, alongside TenNapel and the Gotham Group. The Fox Animation acquisition would be animated by WedgeWorks, with Chris Wedge (Ice Age) eyeing the director’s chair. Cardboard follows a down-on-his-luck father who gives his young son a crappy birthday present (a cardboard box), which comes to life once they shape it into a man. Hit the jump for more.

Variety reports that Maguire, who voiced a character in Cats & Dogs, may also star in Cardboard if the project moves forward. The actor, unfortunately, won’t be seen in the upcoming Ang Lee film, Life of Pi, since the director recently cut him from the picture. There’s a much better chance of spotting Maguire in Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby when it debuts next summer.

TenNapel also has two other projects in the works based off of his previous novels: Ghostopolis at Disney and Monster Zoo with Paramount.

Here’s the book description for Cardboard (via Amazon):

When cardboard creatures come magically to life, a boy must save his town from disaster.

Cam’s down-and-out father gives him a cardboard box for his birthday and he knows it’s the worst present ever. So to make the best of a bad situation, they bend the cardboard into a man-and to their astonishment, it comes magically to life. But the neighborhood bully, Marcus, warps the powerful cardboard into his own evil creations that threaten to destroy them all!

E potevano mancare i Peanuts al cinema?

The Peanuts (Fox Animation/Blue Sky Studios)

Charles Schulz’s ‘Peanuts’ In Feature Deal With Fox Animation And Blue Sky Studios

By MIKE FLEMING | Tuesday October 9, 2012 @ 10:46am EDT
Tags: Blue Sky Studios, Fox Animation, Peanuts

COMMENTS (18)

BREAKING: 20th Century Fox Animation and Ice Age makers Blue Sky Studios will turn Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Woodstock and the whole Peanuts gang into an animated feature film franchise. Fox has closed a deal for rights to turn the strip by the late Charles Schulz into a film that has already been set for release on November 25, 2015. That date commemorates the 65th anniversary of the comic strip and the 50th anniversary of the TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Fox Animation has set director Steve Martino, who co-directed the Fox/Blue Sky hit Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who! and Fox Animation’s latest blockbuster, Ice Age: Continental Drift. The screenplay is by Craig Schulz and the writing team of Bryan Schulz & Cornelius Uliano. Craig Schulz and Bryan Schulz, who are Schulz’s son and grandson, will produce with Uliano.

Deal came after two years of rights negotiations with the Schulz family, culminating in a agreement announced by Fox Animation president Vanessa Morrison. So much of the family film game is built around branded properties, and few family brands are as well known globally as Peanuts.

The Schulz strip was read daily by 355 million people in 75 countries and spawned such Emmy-winning specials as It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Also playing a key role in the deal was Neil Cole, CEO and president of Iconix Brand Group which, in a joint venture with Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, formed Peanuts Worldwide in 2010, the home to the global Peanuts property. Fox Animation director of development Ralph Millero worked closely with Morrison and with the Schulz estate in securing the rights to the property.

Said Fox Animation’s Morrison: “We are thrilled to partner with the Schulz family and Iconix and honored to bring the Peanuts characters to the big screen. This all started with our love and respect for the work of Charles Schulz. We thank the Schulz family and Iconix for letting Fox and Blue Sky bring his vision to new generations of film goers.”

Craig Schulz, President, Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, said, “We have been working on this project for years. We finally felt the time was right and the technology is where we need it to be to create this film. I am thrilled we will be partnering with Blue Sky/Fox to create a Peanuts movie that is true to the strip and will continue the legacy in honor of my father.”

Said Iconix Brand Group CEO Cole: “This is a momentous step for the Peanuts brand. The beloved characters, Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the whole gang resonate with multiple generations all over the world. This film will give us a new medium in which to engage consumers globally and showcase the power of the Peanuts brand.

CAA brokered the deal along with the Ziffren law firm.

By MIKE FLEMING JR. | Thursday November 15, 2012 @ 4:04pm EST
Tags: Brendan Fraser, Katherine Heigl, Peter Lepeniotis, The Nut Job, Will Arnett

COMMENTS (0)

EXCLUSIVE: The animated feature The Nut Job has drawn a voice cast that will be led by Katherine Heigl, Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Stephen Lang, Sarah Gadon, and Jeff Dunham. The feature, which Peter Lepeniotis will direct based on his 2005 short film Surly Squirrel, is a co-production between Canada-based ToonBox Entertainment and Korea-based Redrover Co, Ltd. Redrover is financing with plans to release next year.

Written by veteran Disney animation scribe Lorne Cameron (Brother Bear, Over The Hedge), The Nut Job is an action-packed comedy set in the late 1950s in fictional Oakton. Pic follows the travails of the mischievous squirrel Surly and his rat pal Buddy as they plan a nut store heist that gets out of hand.

Thom Chapman and Graham Moloy are producing and Daniel Woo, Hong Kim, Mike Karz, and Tom Yoon are executive producers, in association with Gulfstream, headed by Karz and Bill Bindley. Gulfstream will make the distribution deal.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the cast that’s being assembled for our first feature,” said Chapman, ToonBox vice president. “They have brought the film to a whole new level. Each voice is perfect for their respective roles, and they truly make the characters come alive.”

Lepeniotis has worked with Pixar Animation Studios and ILM and as an animator on such films as Fantasia 2000 and Toy Story 2. His first project with ToonBox was the animated TV series Bolt’s & Blip. Heigl, Fraser and Dunham are represented by CAA, Arnett and Gadon by WME and Lang by Innovative. Gadon’s also repped by Creative Drive Artists in Canada.
