It seems like, at last, we may be getting a brand new look at Disney’s Frozen 2 this month. What appears to be a brand new trailer for the sequel to the 2013 hit has been rated today by the UK’s BBFC. If this is indeed a fresh look, it will no doubt debut in time for Toy Story 4 later this month – if this is the case, expect it online in the next two weeks. As always, we will update as soon as we receive more info.

Disney Debuts ‘Frozen 2’ Scenes and Story Details at Annecy

ANNECY, France — Disney Animation Studios, a long-time friend and collaborator of the Annecy Intl. Animation Festival, returned to the French town on Friday with three new shorts from its experimental animated shorts program Short Circuit, destined for Disney Plus, before providing an inside look at upcoming “Frozen 2.”

Held at Annecy’s lakeside Bonlieu Theater, “Frozen 2” head of animation Becky Bresee and head of effects animation Marlon West shared behind the scenes details for the making of Disney’s most anticipated sequel in years, telling stories, showing photos and screening two scenes, never-before-seen outside of Disney’s Burbank studios.

Before the first clip, Bresee and West explained that the film kicks off, as did the first, when Elsa and Anna are still young girls. Their father regales the girls with a lavish bedtime story from his youth, when the young prince himself visited an enchanted elemental forest, before something went horribly wrong and he was quickly brought back to Arendelle. Since then, there has been a disconnect between the people of the town and the elements: Air, fire, water and earth.

In the first scene screened on Friday morning, Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff and Sven are engaged in a less-than-fair game of charades. Anna starts, and successfully playacts the word villain, quickly guessed by the other players.

When Olaf heads to the front he declares the next round as boys vs. girls before adeptly transforming himself into a series of instantly recognizable forms, each guessed almost immediately by Kristoff and prompting Anna to accuse the two of cheating.

When it’s Elsa’s turn to mime, she is distracted by a haunting voice that only she can hear, and excuses herself to her room to be alone.

The scene ended there, but West and Bresee explained that Anna then checks in on Elsa, and the two fall asleep watching the northern lights, before Elsa is awoken by the mysterious voice. In a scene featured in the already-released trailer, Elsa heads outside and casts spells like she’s never done before, causing countless ice crystals covered in runes to be suspended in the sky over Arendelle.

The second scene was a longer cut of the one which starts the trailer. In it, Elsa runs headlong into dark and ominous water and massive crashing waves. The clip showed an intense and graphically-satisfying magical battle between Elsa and a horse-shaped water spirit on the spirit’s home turf.

Disney Reveals First Footage of 'Frozen 2' in Annecy

The team also world premiered three shorts that will play on Disney+ when it launches in November.
Just a day after Disney dropped the trailer for Frozen 2, it debuted first footage and artwork at the Annecy Animation Festival in France.

Head of animation Becky Bresee and head of effects Marlon West revealed that the story picks up three years after the ending of the first film. “It's an evolution and an expansion of the story of Frozen, and many of the questions raised in the first movie become the mysteries that our gang are trying to solve in this film,” said Bresee, who said the main question of the film is: “Why was Elsa born with her powers?”

“[It's] about two sisters trying to stay together while the world tries to tear them apart,” added West.

Key scenes revealed Elsa hearing a haunting sound from the forest, and key art showed her father telling her bedtime stories as a child. Bresee said the call was inspired by the ancient Swedish herding call Kulning.

Elsa's father relays a tale of a battle that happened in the forest long ago when the spirits of the forest faced off against the people of the kingdom. Now the group — including Elsa, her sister Anna, Kristof and snowman Olaf — must head deeper into the woods to find out about the past, putting them in danger.

Another key scene showed Elsa swimming deep into the ocean, turning a wave into ice and descending into the depths of a stormy sea, while a happier vignette showed the characters playing charades together, though Elsa is distracted because she cannot stop hearing the cries from the forest.

Bresee and West said that the film is still in production, with seven weeks of animation to be completed and 10 weeks of special effects. It's due out in France on Nov. 20 and the U.S. on Nov. 22. They revealed the French poster, which shows the four walking past a lake in bright sun, but the reflection in the lake is dark red.

Disney also world premiered three short films from its Short Circuit incubator. The first was Exchange Student from Natalie Nourigat, a fish-out-of-water story about the only human on an alien planet. The film had a watercolor on paper style, while the newsprint style story Just a Thought followed. That short, from director Brian Menz, explores what would happen if others could see comics-style “thought bubbles.”

The final short was from technical director Jerry Huynh, who told a story of grief and martial arts in a classic Chinese art style with swirling pinks and pale blues against a mountain backdrop. Huynh relayed an emotional speech and said the film, titled Flower in the Mirror, was inspired by the deaths of three family members within weeks of each other.

All three will debut on Disney+ when the streamer launches in November.

C'était l'une des séances les plus courues du festival d'Annecy: la présentation, en avant-première mondiale, de quelques scènes de La Reine des Neiges 2, suite très attendue du blockbuster de Disney sorti en 2013 et dont la chanson phare Libérée, délivrée est devenue un succès mondial. Attendu le 20 novembre prochain dans les salles obscures, le film reste mystérieux malgré les explications de deux membres essentiels de la distribution: le superviseur des effets spéciaux Marlon West et la cheffe de l’animation Becky Bresee.

L'intrigue tourne autour d'une forêt enchantée et de l’apparition de mystérieux esprits liés aux quatre éléments: feu, eau, vent et terre. Les premières images annoncent un film plus sombre, plus épique. Petite nouveauté: l’intrigue se déroulera cette fois-ci en automne, offrant la possibilité aux deux responsables de l’animation et des effets spéciaux d’explorer de nouvelles palettes de couleur, comme l’orange, après un premier film enneigé et givré. Marlon West: "Le Nokk [ou Nixe, un génie des eaux dans la mythologie nordique, NDLR] est un des plus grands défis que nous ayons eu à relever sur ce film, parce qu’il est présent sous et sur l’eau. Il doit se comporter comme un cheval tout en étant aussi un esprit. Il se désagrège, il se déplace dans l’eau sans forme puis retrouve son corps. Certaines parties de son corps agissent d’une certaine manière lorsqu’elles sont à l’air libre et d’une autre manière sous l’eau. C’est un cheval translucide qui nage sous l’eau: comment peut-on le voir?

Ces esprits en relation avec les éléments [feu, eau, vent, terre, NDLR] sont en réalité assez difficiles à animer car ils ne correspondent à aucun squelettage utilisé traditionnellement en animation [le squelettage est un procédé qui permet aux objets d’avoir un squelette, NDLR]. Le Nokk ressemble à un cheval, mais sa queue ne correspond pas au squelettage.

L’esprit du vent, de son côté, n’a pas de forme: quand ce personnage intervient, c’est un sacré défi, car il a une forte personnalité et nous devons l’animer de la manière la plus délicate et la plus subtile possible, sans dialogue, juste à travers des vêtements qui flottent, des feuilles qui s’envolent… L’esprit du feu, que l’on peut voir dans la bande-annonce, communique lui aussi d’une manière différente: il bouge comme des flammes, mais a été animé comme un être humain."

Marlon West: "Pobbie était déjà présent dans le premier film - presque tous les personnages du premier film font une apparition dans la suite. Ce qui est intéressant, avec ce personnage, c’est que le rigging [ou squelettage, NDLR] a été mis à jour. Les textures des personnages et le détail des cheveux sont désormais beaucoup plus sophistiqués que lorsque nous avons fait le premier film."

Becky Bresee: "L’enjeu est que ces personnages ressemblent le plus possible à ce qu’ils ont été il y a cinq ans tout en les améliorant graphiquement grâce aux nouvelles technologies qui ont été inventées entre les deux films."

Dans le cas de La Reine des Neiges, nous nous sommes donc beaucoup inspirés de la Norvège, et notamment de la flore que l’on peut y trouver. Directeur artistique des deux Reine des Neiges [et de beaucoup classiques de Disney comme Pocahontas, NDLR], Michael Giaimo nous a beaucoup aidés. C’est un génie pour tout ce qui est des couleurs et des formes. Il excelle pour trouver la couleur parfaite pour raconter l’histoire."

Le mystérieux brouillard


Marlon West: "Nous voulions que ce brouillard soit à la fois sympathique et un peu menaçant. C’était notre plus gros défi sur cette scène. Nous essayons toujours de mêler ces deux aspects pour surprendre les spectateurs et les spectatrices. Anna et Elsa sont comme attirées par cet endroit. Ce mur de brouillard laisse entrer les personnages puis se referment sur elles… Que trouve-t-on de l’autre côté? On nous a souvent demandé si La Reine des Neiges 2 était plus sombre que le premier film. La réponse courte est 'oui', bien que le film ne soit pas non plus plus beaucoup plus sombre que le premier film, qui contenait déjà des moments assez tristes. Ce deuxième volet aura des scènes à la fois émouvantes et hilarantes."

Alcune informazioni da chi ha avuto modo di seguire il Festival di Annecy e apprendere qualcosa in più sul film:

- Arendelle est décrite comme détruite après la libération des cristaux.

Does Frozen 2 Even Need a Villain?

Disney animated movies have given us some of cinema’s best love-to-hate-them villains, from Snow White's Evil Queen to The Lion King's Scar and The Little Mermaid's Ursula the Sea Witch. This is partly because Disney movies have long been -- and still are -- rooted in fairy stories and folklore tales that deal in moral absolutes. These villains are painted in the broadest theatrical strokes. One minute they're belting out a riotous show tune and the next they're giving kids nightmares with a pointed glare or a cackling laugh.

We love Disney villains, and Disney knows we love Disney villains. That's why the studio built an entire franchise around their villains' kids, The Descendants, and why Disney has made some of its biggest villains the star of their own solo movies like Maleficent and Cruella De Vil.

However, while these live-action offshoots are finding success with the company's back catalogue of "legacy" characters, the current renaissance era of Disney animated movies have paradoxically found success by doing the exact opposite. Instead of relying on a traditional, good versus evil binary, the studio has been plundering the grey areas, at the cost of, for better or worse, creating new, memorable villains.

The Hans twist in the first Frozen movie is a prime example: The power-hungry prince that broke Anna's heart was little more than a plot device. The same can be said for Moana's angry goddess, Te Kā. The film simply took the Hans device and inverted it, arguably to much greater effect, some would argue.

This isn’t entirely Disney’s fault. It’s representative of a gradual change in the larger cultural attitude towards fictional villainy, which has evolved beyond favoring cartoonish stereotypes to wanting to see empathetic, misguided outsiders. Thanos can wipe out half of all life everywhere and inspire real-world sympathizers. Pennywise the Dancing Clown and the Babadook are shipped as lovers. The Joker is a kooky heartthrob. Venom was 2018's best romantic-comedy. Do we like villains or do we like like villains? It's both! And both are perfectly fine.

In step with this, Disney shifted away from its original plan to retell a faithful version of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, instead reorienting Queen Elsa to be the misunderstood antihero of 2013's Frozen rather than a child-nabbing frost hag.

In another era, Elsa could have been this generation's Maleficent, but it's no longer fashionable to equate magic with unlikable, evil witches and old crones. Plus, Angelina Jolie is currently this generation's Maleficent. Things we don’t understand are things we're now taught to embrace, which is practically spelled out by Disney when Elsa is told to "travel into the unknown" in the first full trailer for Frozen 2.

There could well be some kind of physical adversary waiting for Elsa in the "unknown," but does Elsa really need one? For that matter, does any new Disney leading lady? The point we're at not only tracks with our modern love affair with baddies and antiheroes, but it also tracks with the natural trajectory of Disney heroines.

Snow White sang for her "prince to come" in 1937 and Sleeping Beauty snoozed her way through the final battle with Maleficent in 1959.

In Disney's '90s Golden Era, and Princesses Jasmine and Ariel emancipated themselves to pursue men of their choosing. While Mulan trashed gender norms with a haircut and an arsenal of fireworks, Meg told Hercules that not every "damsel in distress" needs the hand of chivalry extended their way. Belle was kind of patronizing and fell prey to Stockholm Syndrome, so let's just chalk her up to a bump in the road.

In recent years, we've gotten a new generation of Disney heroes with Merida, Moana and Elsa, heroines with much internal agency of their own that have little time or need for either love interests or proper villains. Instead, they go on quests of valor and soul-searching that lead them to pursue the kinds of fantastic adventures that only male characters traditionally get to have.

Between journeying into a mystical, dangerous land and continuing to reconcile with her strange and powerful abilities, it seems like Elsa already has enough drama on her plate to deal with. If it's a choice between another forgettable Hans or some more abstract, thematic barrier to Elsa achieving her goals, we'll take the latter.

Durante una delle sessioni, Chris Buck avrebbe dichiarato che il romanzo Ozma Principessa di Oz è stata una fonte di ispirazione. Il finale è stato descritto come "terrific" dagli spettatori che hanno avuto la fortuna di assistere alla proiezione.
