Disney’s Most Promising Movie is Also Its Worst Idea Yet!

After 100 years of magical and innovative storytelling, The Walt Disney Company is planning to finally tell us the story behind one of its most iconic symbols, The Wishing Star, but that is the worst possible idea that could come out of Walt Disney Animation Studios right now.

Since Walt Disney released his second feature-length animated film, Pinocchio, The Wishing Star has been a key element of Disney magic, captured by the anthem “When You Wish Upon a Star.” Heck, Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Paris features The Wishing Star at the top of its tallest tower, and Shanghai Disney Resort features Wishing Star Park.

It was clearly only a matter of time before Disney Storytellers decided to make a movie about its greatest silent character. And just a few years ago, Disney fans learned that there was indeed a movie in the works! Called Wish, it will tell the origin story of the celestial light that means so much to wishers and dreamers the world over.

Written by Chris Buck and Frozen Director Jennifer Lee, Disney’s Wish is set to star Chris Pine, Alan Tudyk, and Ariana DeBose, and “will follow a young girl named Asha who wishes on a star and gets a more direct answer than she bargained for when a trouble-making star comes down from the sky to join her.” Combining traditional Disney 2D animation, watercolors, and the latest CG technology, it is set to be released in November 2023. Unfortunately, now is the worst time to do it!

Disney’s Wish Suggests the End of Disney Movies

The decision to tell the Wishing Star’s story is a “jump the shark” moment for The Walt Disney Company and, honestly, appears to be a near-desperate move as original stories and remakes alike bombed one after another, and the continued surplus of remakes, sequels, prequels, and spinoffs has onlookers asking if Disney has finally run out of ideas.

There is also significant risk involved in telling the story of such a crucial Disney icon. It is like Mickey Mouse finally was given a feature-length movie. Disney cannot afford to have this movie bomb or continue the divisive trend of recent Disney movies that has been dubbed by many as “studio activism.”

Disney’s Wish can be the celebratory tribute to the company’s 100 years, but it could also signal the beginning of its downfall. The final bars of its cinematic opus. Only time will tell which it becomes.

Sono d'accordo, il film è decisamente un turning point, ma forse percepito più in America che da noi, perchè come espresso bene dai veu, la stella dei desideri è un tropo poco sentito dagli europei, tranne che per i fan Disney. Quindi questi, la vecchia guardia, tra cui si inseriscono molti di noi, potrebbero eclissarsi definitivamente se non saranno capaci di soddisfarne le aspettative. Il rischio c'è in effetti, ma non così catastrofico. resta sempre il pubblico medio e generalista, che potrebbe comunque proseguire nel consumo dei film che verranno.

Articolo interessante, in effetti l’idea di voler spiegare le origini di un elemento così simbolico come la stella dei desideri, per quanto si riferisca ad uno degli elementi più iconici dei Classici Disney, dimostra una mancanza di idee preoccupante
Il problema è questa insistenza sulle storie originali a discapito degli adattamenti di racconti preesistenti ( fiabe e favole soprattutto ), le storie originali in Disney non hanno quasi mai funzionato, prima dell’era Revival gli unici Classici ad essere storie inventate da 0 erano solo: Dumbo, Lilli e il Vagabondo e Gli Aristogatti, Il Re Leone e Koda Fratello Orso
Tutto il resto della filmografia Disney è basata su fiabe o libri

E quindi si torna a quello che dicono sempre i VEU, che gli ultimi film Disney non sono entrati nell’immaginario collettivo perché non sono basati su racconti che il pubblico può scoprire, leggere e mettere a confronto con film

Però io sono comunque fiducioso in merito a Wish, anche se con una premessa particolare potrebbe essere bello e avrà successo, perché anche se non è basato su una fiaba ha comunque gli elementi fiabeschi dei vecchi Classici Disney

Si ma infatti questo tizio è poco preciso in ciò che esprime veu. Anzitutto cita solo la Lee come regista di Frozen scansando Chris Buck, mentre anche lui lo era al pari della Lee, che diciamo era più la scrittrice che propriamente la regista, all'inizio. In più, segnando la serie di insuccessi recenti secondo me sbaglia perché solo Strange World è stato un flop, Encanto nonostante il box office mediocre ha riscosso tantissimo successo dopo la release su Disney+, quindi lui si riferiva anche ai film Pixar, soprattutto quando parlava di sequel spinoff ecc perché alla Disney gli unici sequel recenti sono stati Ralph breaks the internet che è andato mediamente bene e Frozen 2, un megasuccesso. Lui confonde Pixar e Disney quindi le sue congetture sono molto inaffidabili perché partono da presupposti sbagliati. Il problema, poi, della carenza di idee è assolutamente ridicolo, perché stanno sfornando film originali di continuo, i sequel sono diventati uno ogni tanto, e a me sta bene così.

Wish sarà comunque un film importante, visto che arriva in un anno così significativo, prova uno stile grafico diverso e per il tema trattato...

Secondo me i film d'animazione Disney ultimamente, sia Disney che Pixar, stanno soffrendo tanto di cattiva pubblicizzazione tra i bambini e ragazzi, oltre che le ca**are sul come distribuirli che hanno fatto perdere l'evento del nuovo film al cinema, sia Disney che Pixar.

Anche Raya è stato un flop, sia a livello cinematografico che in streaming on demand. Encanto è andato bene in streaming ma bisogna vedere quanti introiti ha effettivamente prodotto; purtroppo i dati di disney+ restano ingiustamente segreti.
Ralph 2 è andato mediamente male, non essendo rientrato nel budget di produzione; non è stato un disastro ma nemmeno un successo.
Sul resto concordo con Hiroe.

Ma è confermato il fatto che sia cattivo? Dal phisique du role non mi sembra,ma non si sa mai.
Comunque il nome magnifico(a parte che mi dà un aria un po' infantile,ma vedremo) è lasciato praticamente in italiano ,ho controllato in spagnolo e in portoghese dovrebbe avere un accento sulla i,non so se è una coincidenza o bho vuole dire qualcosa di più.

Ho ingrandito la foto e, sorprendentemente, il look è davvero un ibrido CGI e 2D. Hanno pubblicato il post anche su FB di Disney Italia e il Re si chiamerà così anche da noi. Speravo mettessero anche il sottotitolo ma ancora niente.
Credo proprio che fra breve, con la Sirenetta, avremo il sospirato Teaser Trailer.

Secondo me non sarà un vero cattivo, ma un antagonista vanesio e istrionico che non ascolta il grido di aiuto di Asha, rimanendo cieco di fronte alla minaccia che incombe sul regno. Una sorta di Gilderoy Allock di Harry Potter insomma, non un cattivo fino al midollo come Voldemort, per mantenere il paragone.
Potrebbe anche essere un re che per mantenere la popolarità nel regno nasconde sotto il tappeto tutto il marcio, ma di certo non mi aspetto un cattivo canonico (anche perché in tal caso non avrebbero ingaggiato Chris Pine che ha una forte verve comica).

Sono d'accordissimo con Prince, questo film è nato come tutto metaforico e lui sarà il tipico capo che non ascolta il popolo, troppo preso dell'idolo di se stesso. Però mi piace ed è stupendo avere una figura nemica maschile, che credo non si vede da Coco. O sbaglio? È dico in Disney+Pixar, mentre per la sola Disney l'ultimo cattivo maschio era........ L'uomo con la maschera di Big Hero 6? O Re Candito in Ralph. Anche il nonno di Elsa era una figura maschile negativa. Non proprio villain... Ma un po' si, a pensarci bene. Anche se anche quello era un cattivo a sorpresa, in una figura reale insospettabile, stile Hans.

Every Disney fan is familiar with the magical star first seen in "Pinocchio," which old Geppetto wished upon in order to turn a certain wooden puppet into a real boy. Well, get ready to find out the origin story for that star ... or something like that. "Wish" was first announced during last year's D23 celebration, centering on that iconic wishing star that has appeared in subsequent movies like "Peter Pan," "Lady and the Tramp," and "The Princess and the Frog" and has become synonymous with the Disney brand itself. So perhaps it was only a matter of time before an entire movie was made about it with the star as a main character.

Depending on your perspective, this was either the most obvious and satisfying way to celebrate 100 years of Disney, or an ouroboros-like demonstration of the biggest entertainment corporation on Earth gazing directly into its own navel like never before. Either way, "Wish" is set to arrive later this year and, other than the sneak peek revealed at D23, we've yet to receive any updates on the project. Thankfully, that's finally changed with this month's CinemaCon in Las Vegas, an annual event geared towards movie theater owners in which studios traditionally (and exclusively) reveal new looks at their biggest upcoming productions.

/Film's Ben Pearson has been acting as our boots on the ground, taking point during several panels and reporting on the goodies he's seen. Last night, it was his first impression of the first public screening of DC's "The Flash." Today, he's bringing the goods on the newly-revealed footage of Disney's "Wish," directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn and starring the voice talents of Ariana DeBose, Alan Tudyk, and Chris Pine. The footage for Disney's "Wish" introduces us to the land of Rosas, a magical kingdom of wishes located just off the Iberian peninsula. Ruled over by King Magnifico (Chris Pine), Rosas welcomes travelers from all over the world. Among its residents is our main character, Asha, a sharp-witted idealist played by Ariana DeBose. Her long braided hair follows in the footsteps of Disney's "Frozen," it's incredibly textured with the detailing showing just how much the company's 3D animations has developed. Visually, the film shares a lot in common with "Encanto," stylistically calling to mind the recent Disney film — though the song heard from the film has much more in common with the music of "Frozen."

The scene sees Asha singing in the woods, trailed by an adorable young goat. "So I look up at the stars to guide me, and throw caution to every warning sign." As she sings, she eventually finds herself wandering a small village, which sees citizens encircled by bubbles that reveal their wishes being granted. The song speeds up towards the back half, taking a Lin Manuel Miranda-esque turn: though it's not quite rap, the faster lyrics and syncopated rhythm showcase the Disney musician's influence.

Asha sprints out onto the edge of a huge tree branch that leans out over a cavern and stares up into the night sky at a huge star. As the camera spins around her, it becomes an image akin to "Pocahontas": stars and flowers float around as her hair blows in the breeze. The song reaches its peak and she sings the final line: "So I make this wish, for us to have something more than this." Just then, the star blasts a beam of light directly down onto her.

This is where the footage ends, but we know from the synopsis that Asha will later encounter a ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, they will "set out to prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen."

"Wish" opens only in theaters on November 22, 2023.

Ariana DeBose sings an original song, "More for Us," in a new clip previewed at CinemaCon.

Chris Pine will voice King Magnifico in Disney Animation’s musical-comedy Wish, its Nov. 22 release that “celebrates Walt Disney’s Vision” and will tell how the wishing star that so many Disney characters have wished upon came to be.

Announced Wednesday at CinemaCon, Pine joins West Side Story Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, who voices a teen named Asha who sees a darkness in her kingdom that no one else does, so in a moment of desperation, she makes a passioned plea to the stars. Pine lends his voice to the ruler of Rosas, the magical kingdom where “wishes really do come true.”

The studio previewed a clip in which Asha sings an original song, “More for Us,” as she decides to help others’ wishes come true, while she walks through a forest and around the kingdom.

The story was written by Frozen‘s Jennifer Lee, also an exec producer; and Chris Buck, who co-directs with Fawn Veerasunthorn. It is produced by Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes and features songs by Julia Michaels.

“As the most powerful person in the kingdom, King Magnifico needed to be played by someone who could give all the charm, cleverness and charisma to this magnanimous character, and Chris is beautifully bringing all of that and then some,” Lee said.

No, non posso tollerare un’altro cattivo a sorpresa, rovinerebbe tutto
Ci vuole un cattivo palese, altrimenti la storia non risulterà epica e interessante per il pubblico generalista

ma chi ha detto che è un cattivo è la Randolph... che sarà una influencer trova scoop ma non è al momento attendibile come Hollywood Reporter o DeadLine o Variety... magari la Randolph sa di più e l'ha detto, può anche essere così...
nella presentazione ufficiale però Magnifico non è descritto come cattivo ma come magnanimo che è il contrario di villain, quindi o è un cattivo a sorpresa o magari è un altro tipo di personaggio... magari un po' collerico come Re Tritone ma in fondo buono o un personaggio come il papà di Pocahontas che sembra duro ma in realtà è buono e tiene al suo popolo... magari è come un papà per Asha (che comunque non è principessa di sangue reale perché è principessa dentro ma non lo è di sangue nè lo diventa per stirpe) o un consigliere... l'avessero messo più giovane si poteva pensare ad un interesse amoroso ma ci sembra troppo maturo e non è in linea con l'idea disneyana di oggi...
a vedere il look ci dà più l'idea di un sovrano come il papà di Vaiana che non un cattivo poi però può essere qualcosa di mascherato...
domani magari si saprà qualcosa dal teaser trailer, sempre che mostrino qualcosa perché potrebbero limitarsi a pochissime sequenze o addirittura al logo con Asha e la stella, vedremo...
