Hugh Grant To Play Villain in Paramount And eOne’s Untitled ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Pic; ‘It’ Star Sophia Lillis Also On Board

EXCLUSIVE: Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis are set to join the cast of Paramount and eOne’s untitled film adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons, Hasbro’s wildly-popular game franchise from Wizards of the Coast. The film also stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith and Bridgerton star Rege-Jean Page. Paramount and eOne are jointly producing and financing the pic, with eOne distributing in the UK and Canada and Paramount in the rest of world.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will direct and write the script. Jeremy Latcham is producing through his deal with studio eOne, Hasbro’s entertainment arm. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner is also producing.

Plot details behind this latest take on the IP are being kept under wraps. Dungeons & Dragons is a leading fantasy entertainment franchise, fueled by the imagination of storytellers around the world. More than 40 million fans have interacted with or played D&D since it was first published 46 years ago, including via video games and livestream entertainment on Twitch and YouTube.

While its unknown who Lillis will be playing, sources do tell Deadline Grant would play the film’s antagonist

Grant is coming off one of the biggest years in his career following his critically acclaimed work in the HBO limited series The Undoing, which recently earned him Golden Globe and SAG nominations. Prior to that on the TV side, he also received rave reviews and an Emmy nomination for Amazon’s A Very English Scandal. On the film side, he has stayed busy with director Guy Ritchie appearing in The Gentleman and the upcoming crime pic Five Eyes, that is currently filming.

Lillis first broke on to the scene as Beverly Marsh in the box-office hit It. She was most recently seen in the Amazon pic Uncle Frank as well as her Netflix series I Am Not Okay With This.

Grant is repped by CAA and Lillis is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and attorney Ryan LaVine.

Dungeons & Dragons: Chloe Coleman entra nel cast del film

Secondo quanto riportato da Deadline la giovane attrice Chloe Coleman (My Spy, Avatar 2) sarebbe entrata a far parte del cast di Dungeons & Dragons, il novo adattamento cinematografico firmato da Jonathan Goldstein e John Francis Daley.

Nel cast troveremo anche Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith. Regé-Jean Page, Hugh Grant e Sophia Lillis.
Grant interpreterà l’antagonista della pellicola mentre non è ancora chiaro il ruolo di Lillis, che di recente abbiamo visto in Gretel e Hansel e nella serie I Am Not Okay with This.
Il film di Dungeons & Dragons verrà realizzato dalla Paramount e dalla Hasbro tramite l’etichetta Entertainment One. Il lungometraggio sarà prodotto dall’ex dirigente dei Marvel Studios Jeremy Latcham che, qualche mese fa, ha firmato un accordo di prelazione proprio con lo studio controllato dal colosso del giocattolo. Le riprese della pellicola dovrebbero partire questa primavera in Irlanda del Nord, nella zona di Belfast.

I registi e sceneggiatori del film sono Jonathan Goldstein e John Francis Daley, autori di Game Night nonché responsabili dello script di di Spider-Man: Homecoming.[...]

Io credo sia un'ottima scelta fare un film su questo gioco, in questo momento sta godendo di una rinnovata fama, va proprio di moda tra i giovani (nerd o anche simil-nerd)! spero lo facciano in grande perché c'è davvero un mondo da esplorare. Ma soprattutto spero che abbiano pensato a una bella storia, ci sarebbe così tanto da scrivere con i presupposti dell'intero mondo di d&d! Ho giocato vari anni a dungeon &dragons e devo dire che ancora mi sento una novizia!

Exclusive: Chris Pine Calls 'Dungeons & Dragons' Movie a Mix of ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Princess Bride’

Every Dungeons & Dragons player knows that a good adventure must have its fair share of thrills, surprises, and good laughs. And according to star Chris Pine, that’s exactly what we are getting in Paramount’s upcoming film adaptation of the beloved RPG franchise. During an exclusive interview for All the Old Knives with Collider's Steve Weintraub, Pine talked about what fans can expect from the highly-anticipated film, revealing the unexpected influences that directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are using in their take on the franchise.

Starring top-class Hollywood adventurers such as Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Regé-Jean Page, the new Dungeons & Dragons film is sparing no expense to bring the beloved RPG franchise back to the big screen. As it should, since the Dungeons & Dragons adaptation starring Jeremy Irons, Marlon Wayans, and Thora Birch was a complete flop, despised by critics, the audience, and players alike. When asked if he could give some more details about the new adaptation, Pine did his best to keep the movie’s plot a secret. The star, however, revealed some exciting details about the film’s tone. In Pine’s words:

“Oh man. Well, what I will say is we had a hell of a fun time making it. There was a lot of laughs. The way that I've been describing it, it's like Game of Thrones mixed with a little Princess Bride, just a smidge of Holy Grail; it's somewhere in that ballpark. It's a lot of fun. It's got a lot of thrills. It's poppy, it's eighties heartfelt, there's a bit of Goonies in there. My character, he's the ultimate party planner. I think it's going to be really good. I mean, who fucking knows, but I think we got a good shot and John and John are killer guys. They know comedy and they know heart and we had a great cast and we had a good time making it. And that's all you can ask for.”

It makes sense for the new Dungeons & Dragons to be inspired by The Goonies. The tabletop RPG was first published in 1974 but had its biggest boom in the 1980s. So it’s no wonder productions set in that decade, such as Stranger Things, tend to use the game to reproduce the period’s trends correctly. It’s also somewhat expected that the new film has drawn some inspiration from Game of Thrones, as the dragons are the true A-listers of the cast. Besides that, a good Dungeons & Dragons campaign always features distant kingdoms, wars, betrayals, and everything in between.

Now, the reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a little surprising. Even though the British comedy group’s film is a classic medieval adventure, Holy Grail is also a collection of sketches using the absurdity of King Arthur’s journey to make the audience laugh. We were not expecting the new Dungeons & Dragons film to be a comedy. However, if you want to make jokes, you can’t go wrong by mimicking Monty Python. Finally, there’s the Princess Bride inspiration. And that one is wacky! We are unsure how the Dungeons & Dragons film will mix romantic comedy, family-friendly adventure, and epic war drama. But we are indeed intrigued to see the result of this bold multiclass project.

Sono così sorpresa che non trovo parole! Ho giocato a Dungeons & Dragons da ragazza con mio fratello e ho visto pure quel filmetto per ragazzi ispirato al gioco.
Sono curiosissima di vedere questa nuova produzione e mi auguro che il cast stellare non serva a coprire una sceneggiatura scarsa. Conosco Monty Python and the Holy Grail e adoro La Storia Fantastica (Princess Bride): anche in questo caso sono curiosa di vedere le varie ispirazioni.

Che dire? Io resto basito. Credo che una roba del genere non meriti nemmeno di essere finanziata, e mi meraviglio che esista ancora un mercato. Sophia Lillis bellissima (sarebbe stata una Ariel con i fiocchi!) così come anche Jean Rege Page (che però ha sempre la stessa espressione da stoccafisso, recitare non fa proprio per lui). Il resto completamente da cancellare, penso che i Veu avranno un infarto vedendo questo trailer che sembra ereditare il peggio dei Marvel e il peggio di Shrek.

Molto pop, con atmosfere anni 90. Il trailer è carico a pallettoni ma il fim potrebbe essere comunque interessante, per atmosfere e umorismo un po' alla Princess Bride, che comunque mi ha ricordato.

finalmente l'abbiamo visto... è un po' "fracassone" come film ma ci sta nell'idea che hanno in mente per questo franchise... non crediamo tiri fuori il peggio di Shrek perché non abbiamo visto cose volgari, piuttosto fracassone è vero ma non è volgare da quel che si vede nel trailer... almeno per ora non lo possiamo definire tale... che abbia aspetti un po' scioccherelli e da parodia ci sta (il tipo con il luito alla fine) ma oltre quello non è che ci sia molto altro per ora...

Dungeons & Dragons, i registi e il produttore presentano il film Lucca tra clip e anticipazioni: “Ne siamo orgogliosi”

I registi hanno presentato ben due clip dal film (le stesse presentate a San Diego) tra applausi e risate del pubblico. “Vorremmo portarvi con noi a ogni proiezione” hanno commentato i registi. “Siete un pubblico strepitoso“.
Hanno poi parlato del film e della necessità di realizzare un film equilibrato:
Prima di tutto volevamo raccontare una storia che funzionasse sia per i fan di Dungeons & Dragons che per gli spettatori casuali. Dovevamo correre su quella linea sottile tra i due gruppi e per farlo abbiamo dovuto costruire un film di cui noi stessi fossimo orgogliosi.
Chi conosce Dungeons & Dragons sa che esiste un mondo infinito da cui attingere e quindi raccontare 50 anni di storia non era facile. Grazie al cielo avevamo la tecnologia dalla nostra parte.
Vista la presenza di tanta comicità nelle clip mostrate, si è così parlato del rapporto tra i momenti più seri e quelli più leggeri:
Alcuni prendono Dungeons & Dragons molto seriamente e altri no. La cosa bella era far cozzare la serietà con la leggerezza. E in effetti in ogni campagna di Dungeons & Dragons c’è bisogno di persone diverse e abbiamo fatto lo stesso con il cast di questo film. Tutti gli attori hanno portato una propria forza sulla scena e abbiamo amato tutti, hanno svolto un lavoro incredibile.
La cosa divertente è che il primo giorno di prove abbiamo partecipato a una campagna di Dungeons & Dragons per rompere il ghiaccio, è stato meraviglioso.
Un lavoro incredibile dal punto di vista visivo è stato fatto sulle creature, tra cui i draghi::
La cosa difficile è stato capire come scegliere quali creature mostrare visto che ce ne sono tantissime e ovviamente non siamo riusciti a inserirle tutte. Grazie agli effetti visivi, però, abbiamo reso tutto grandioso e per farlo abbiamo coinvolto i migliori del settore.
Poi abbiamo lavorato sull’unicità delle creature, ad esempio ci sono diversi tipi di draghi, che non sono solo quelli classici. Ovviamente ce ne sono tanti nella cultura popolare quindi volevamo far qualcosa di diverso con i nostri draghi. Posso dire che non vedrete mai qualcosa di simile al cinema o in tv.
Come ci si aspetta da un film di Dungeons & Dragons, i luoghi visitati saranno tanti e la produzione ha scelto un mucchio di location vere:
Abbiamo cercato ambientazioni che catturassero l’essenza di Dungeons & Dragons e raccontassero un mondo diverso dal nostro. L’Irlanda per esempio è piena di bellezza, natura e posti incantevoli. Quello che non siamo riusciti a trovare l’abbiamo ricreato in testo di posa.
Si è infine parlato, ovviamente, delle possibilità di un sequel:
Il mondo è enorme e certamente c’è l’occasione di fare altri film. La nostra sfida era creare un film che valesse la pena vedere. E poi l’obiettivo creare personaggi di cui poteste innamorarvi per lasciarvi con il desiderio di vedere altro.
