Kyle Soller, Stellan Skarsgård Join Disney+’s Cassian Andor Series

Variety has brought word that Disney+’s upcoming Rogue One spin-off series focused on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor is looking to expand its cast as Kyle Soller (Poldark) and Stellan Skarsgård (Chernobyl) are in final negotiations to join.

It’s unclear at this time who the two will appear as in the series, but with six weeks of pre-production having been completed before being shut down prior to global health concerns, it’s safe to say production will be able to get underway shortly after it’s over and information on their casting could soon follow.

The series will follow the adventures of rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One. The spy thriller series will explore tales of espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire. Joining Diego Luna is Rogue One standout Alan Tudyk will return to reprise his role as the former Imperial enforcer droid K-2SO, who was reprogrammed to help the Rebel Alliance.

Tony Gilroy, who directed the reshoots for Rogue One, reportedly rewrote the pilot episode for the series. Gilroy will also direct several episodes. Stephen Schaffer (The Americans) will serve as the series’ showrunner.

In Rogue One, a group of unlikely heroes bands together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Luna starred alongside Felicity Jones in the film with Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Riz Ahmed, plus Forest Whitaker and Ben Mendelsohn. It remains to be seen if any of these characters will appear in the series.

Disney+'s Cassian Andor Brings Back Genevieve O'Reilly, Adds Denise Gough

The cast for the increasingly curious Disney+ Star Wars spin-off series focused on Rogue One‘s Cassian Andor has expanded with the additions of Genevieve O’Reilly to reprise her role as Mon Mothma from the prequel trilogy and anthology film and Denise Gough, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

While character details for Gough’s role are currently being kept under wraps, O’Reilly is set to return to her role of Republic senator and co-founder and leader of the Rebel Alliance Mon Mothma after first appearing in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith in a non-speaking role and then a more prominent supporting turn in Rogue One. She was also voiced by O’Reilly in Star Wars Rebels and Kath Soucie in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Tony Gilroy, who directed the reshoots for Rogue One, reportedly rewrote the pilot episode for the series and will also direct several episodes. Stephen Schaffer (The Americans) was to serve as the series’ showrunner, but sources are now reporting that Schaffer has exited the role and Gilroy is now taking over the position.

Toby Haynes Replaces Tony Gilroy as Director on Disney+ Cassian Andor Series

Disney+ and Lucasfilm are moving forward on their Rogue One spinoff series centered on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, but will with a different director.
According to Deadline, Black Mirror director Toby Haynes has signed on to direct the first three episodes, replacing Rogue One writer Tony Gilroy, who originally signed on last October.
Per the trade, Gilroy had to drop from the project due to COVID-19-related travel reasons. Gilroy lives in New York and had to make a decision quickly on whether he would head over to the U.K. for the shoot, and in the end thought it would be best that he stay in New York and have Haynes take over his directing duties.
Haynes was already on Lucasfilm’s radar to direct future episodes of the series, and since he is already in the U.K. all parties thought this was the perfect situation and made the most since. Gilroy will remain on the project as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

Details on the series – which is in pre-production, are being kept under wraps; however we do know the series is being aimed as a “spy-thriller.” Take a look at the synopsis below:
“Follows the adventures of Rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Diego Luna will reprise the role of Andor, which he originated in the 2016 film. The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.”
Also set to appear in the series, returning from their Rogue One roles are Alan Tudyk as Andor’s droid companion K-2SO, Jimmy Smits as Bail Organa, Alistair Petrie as General Draven, and Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma, with newcomers Stellan Skarsgard, Denise Gough, Adria Arjona, and Kyle Soller, all in unknown roles.
Production is expected to begin in early 2021 in London. Disney+ has yet to give the series an official release date.

“It’s basically everything you have to know to understand Rogue One,” Luna said. “The story of the character before. I can spoil the ending I guess!”

He added, “It’s nice to go into a story you already know the ending. Now you can take the nuances and the layers. I think it’s fun to do something that isn’t just about getting to the end. It’s about delaying that.” [...]

RUMOR: Andy Serkis Returning To ‘Star Wars’ Universe In ‘Andor’

Filming for the upcoming Star Wars prequel series Andor has been completed for nearly a month now but, even though most of the casting has been revealed to the public, you can always count on Disney to sneak in some great little surprises à la Luke Skywalker in the season 2 final of The Mandalorian.

According to a new rumor from the site MakingStarWars.net, there might be one actor that is appearing in Andor that most might not expect to see.

Sources close to the site indicate that Andy Serkis may have been secretly cast in the series!

Should that source – and this rumor – be correct, that could mean one of two things: Either Serkis’ Supreme Leader Snoke is going to show up and fans are finally going to get some additional answers about his origins, or Serkis will be playing a brand new character altogether. After all, the man has proven that he’s a multifaceted actor, even without the CG dots on his face. Does anyone else remember when he played King Kong and one of the crew-mates aboard the SS Venture in Peter Jackson’s King Kong?

While we already know that the series will take place so far before Rogue One that K-2SO might not appear, should the news be true true, it’ll be interesting to see where Serkis’ character might fit into the scope of the series.

As always, because this is a rumor we urge readers to take this news with a grain of salt. The only way to truly know if Serkis is in the series at this point is to wait until it drops on Disney+

Now, not much else is known Andor; however, it’s also believed that another familiar face from the Star Wars universe will make an appearance.

In addition to Diego Luna, the series will star Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Genevieve O’Rielly reprising her role as Mon Mothma.

As of right now Andor slated to drop on Disney+ in July of 2022.
