Inside Amazon's $250M 'Lord of the Rings' Deal: "It's Very Much a Creature of the Times"

After battling Netflix for rights to bring the popular series to the small screen, the network's groundbreaking negotiation guaranteed a five-season commitment of J.R.R. Tolkien's adaptation, making it the "most expensive TV series ever."
Nearly 45 years after his death, J.R.R. Tolkien scored the biggest Hollywood deal of 2017. Since the British author doesn't return phone calls anymore, it took a phalanx of lawyers and dealmakers to bring to fruition what is poised to be the most expensive TV show ever.

On Nov. 13, Amazon Studios beat out Netflix for a $250 million rights deal with the Tolkien estate, publisher HarperCollins and New Line Cinema that includes a five-season commitment to bring The Lord of the Rings to the small screen. With the clock ticking, Amazon must be in production within two years, according to the terms of the pact. When production expenses like casting, producers and visual effects are factored in, the series is expected to cost north of $1 billion.

Within weeks of Amazon chief Jeff Bezos' directive last September to his since-ousted content chief Roy Price to bring in the next Game of Thrones, negotiations were underway that also involved publisher HarperCollins and New Line. Greenberg Glusker attorney Matt Galsor, who served as the chief architect of the deal and repped the Tolkien estate, was hammering out terms that include a potential spinoff.

"This is the most complicated deal I've ever seen," Galsor says, "but it was handled relatively quickly, in a way that brought the parties together in a close relationship. It was tough, but everybody liked each other and felt like a team more as the deal closed."

Dan Scharf, Amazon's head of television business affairs, ran point for the streaming giant. New Line and parent Warner Bros. never had TV rights to Rings, but Amazon may use material from the films, so New Line co-president Carolyn Blackwood and Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich were brought into the talks.

The Tolkien book rights have a long and complicated history. Since the author originally sold rights to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to United Artists in 1969, they have at points passed through the hands of MGM, producer Saul Zaentz and Miramax before New Line released Peter Jackson's six mega-hit adaptations, starting in 2001. Those films have earned $5.85 billion worldwide at the box office, underscoring the property's enduring popularity.

As for whether Jackson is involved in the TV series as an executive producer remains to be seen and would be up to him. His attorney Peter Nelson was not a part of the 2017 rights negotiations but recently helped start a dialogue between Jackson and Amazon."It's very much a creature of the times," Nelson says of the Amazon deal. "We are in an era where streamers are bidding up the price of programming. I think Amazon is taking a page out of the studios' emphasis on franchises. They also are realizing that with the overproduction of television, you need to get the eyeballs to the screen, and you can do that with franchise titles."

So far, there's no sign of Bob Weinstein or his estranged brother Harvey trying to elbow their way into the deal. The estranged brothers — the latter embroiled in an epic sex harassment and abuse scandal that was unfolding as the Amazon deal-making was in high gear — could have made noise. After all, they inked an agreement with New Line in 1998 while they controlled the Tolkien film rights at Miramax.

The Weinsteins were profit participants in the Rings trilogy, and they used their 1998 agreement as the basis to sue for a piece of the Hobbit films. Ultimately, they collected $12.5 million from the first Hobbit film, but nothing from the next two releases. "We won," says a studio source, "and they didn't get a dime for two or three."

Still, at least one deal insider wouldn't be surprised if either of the Weinsteins surfaced in the future to make a claim.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings series should be here by 2021

Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke teases the show, which is early in its development, in industry interviews.

Amazon is in early development of its Lord of the Rings show, with Amazon Studios' new head Jennifer Salke hoping the show will air in 2021.

Salke said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the show would be in production within the next two years.

"Despite all the chatter about it, the deal just closed a month ago. We've been talking to writers. We have an estate that's very active. I've spent three hours with Neil Tolkien. There's a lot of moving parts with it," Salke said regarding the early development process.

Salke also says there are "amicable" conversations with Peter Jackson, who directed both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, but no firm involvement on his part.

In another interview with Deadline, Salke said the show will likely involve "characters you love," but will not remake the movies. It's also possible the show could shoot in New Zealand, where the previous Rings movies have filmed, she said.

Both interviews are wide-ranging, with Salke detailing her plans for picking out future programs for Amazon, including how the streaming service recently rescued The Expanse from cancellation. She replaced Roy Price in the role earlier this year following harassment allegations.

CNET reached out to Amazon to confirm comment and has not immediately heard back.

Il cast è composto da: Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Daniel Weyman, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Maxim Baldry, Ian Blackburn, Kip Chapman, Anthony Crum, Maxine Cunliffe, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Thusitha Jayasundera, Fabian McCallum, Simon Merrells, Geoff Morrell, Peter Mullan, Lloyd Owen, Augustus Prew, Peter Tait, Alex Tarrant, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker e Sara Zwangobani.

Io spero guardino all'epopea di The Mandalorian.

Notizia bomba dall'autorevolissimo Deadline!

Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Rounds Out Sprawling Cast (Exclusive)

Charles Edwards, Will Fletcher, Amelie Child-Villiers and Beau Cassidy round out the sprawling season one cast of the big-budget live-action TV series.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings live-action TV series has finally wrapped casting on season one.

The big-budget series, which first began production in early 2020, has added Charles Edwards (The Crown), Will Fletcher (The Girl Who Fell), newcomers Amelie Child-Villiers (The Machine) and Beau Cassidy to its sprawling cast. The series, which is estimated to already cost $465 million for its first season alone, clocks in with an ensemble cast of 39.

Details on who the quartet will play in the live-action Lord of the Rings series are being kept under wraps.

Amazon’s LOTR will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The series explores the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. The epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Announced in November 2017, Amazon landed global TV rights to The Lord of the Rings and handed out a multiple-season commitment to the series. The drama is being produced in-house at Amazon Studios alongside the Tolkien Estate and Trust, publisher HarperCollins and Warner Bros. Entertainment’s New Line Cinema. The series was technically renewed for a second season, which is basically a formality.

Sources estimate Amazon’s megadeal for LOTR is to be for five seasons — plus a potential spinoff. Insiders put the price tag for global rights alone to the series at $250 million and believe once things like budgets, casting and visual effects are factored in, the price tag could hit $1 billion. (Yes, $1 billion for a TV show.)

Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy novels, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 4) serve as showrunners on the series. J.A. Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) is set to direct the first two episodes and will executive produce, along with his producing partner Belén Atienza.

Writers Gennifer Hutchison (Breaking Bad), Jason Cahill (The Sopranos) and Justin Doble (Stranger Things) are also EPs, as are Lindsey Weber (10 Cloverfield Lane), Bruce Richmond (Game of Thrones), Callum Greene (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and former Amazon head of genre Sharon Tal Yguado. Bryan Cogman (Game of Thrones), who served as a consulting producer on season one, has departed to focus on development. Former EP Gene Kelly has also departed the series.

A premiere date for LOTR has not yet been determined. Pre-pandemic, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke told The Hollywood Reporter that the “hope” was that LOTR will be on the air in 2021. As part of the LOTR deal, the show must be in production within two years of the original pact. It’s unclear if the production delays prompted by the pandemic will impact the show’s timeline. Sources tell THR that the latest expectation is for LOTR to launch in early 2022, though a late 2021 debut could be possible depending on production hurdles related to the pandemic.

‘The Lord Of The Rings’ TV Series Gets Amazon Premiere Date & First-Look Photo

Filming wrapped today on Season 1 of Amazon Studios’ The Lord of The Rings TV series, and now we have a premiere date.

The studio has set Friday, September 2, 2022, for the debut of the first season of the yet-to-be-titled series. New episodes will be released weekly, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 territories and countries worldwide. Amazon Studios also released the first series image tied to the wrap of filming in New Zealand.

It is a shot from the first episode of the series, but the studio is staying mum for now on the character and actor featured in the photo. See it below.

Developed by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, The Lord of the Rings series is described as an “epic drama” set in the Second Age of Middle-earth — thousands of years before the events of the Lord of the Rings films and the novels by J.R.R. Tolkien on which they were based. The series brings to screens for the very first time J.R.R. Tolkien’s fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.

Headlining the ensemble cast are Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Lloyd Owen, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.

Payne and McKay serve as showrunners and executive produce with Lindsey Weber, Callum Greene, J.A. Bayona, Belén Atienza, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill, Gennifer Hutchison, Bruce Richmond, and Sharon Tal Yguado. Wayne Che Yip co-executive produces, Charlotte Brändström directs, and Christopher Newman serves as producer.

“The journey begins September 2, 2022, with the premiere of our original The Lord of the Rings series on Prime Video,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “I can’t express enough just how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-earth. Our talented producers, cast, creative and production teams have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this untold and awe-inspiring vision to life.”

A world-renowned literary work and winner of the International Fantasy Award and Prometheus Hall of Fame Award, The Lord of the Rings was named Amazon customers’ favorite book of the millennium in 1999 and Britain’s best-loved novel of all time in BBC’s The Big Read in 2003. The Lord of the Rings books have been translated into about 40 languages and have sold more than 150 million copies.

Development on the series began in 2017. In November of that year, Amazon purchased the television rights to The Lord of the Rings for nearly $250 million. Subsequently, the studio made a five-season production commitment, worth around $1 billion. Given this commitment, the Amazon Original is making history as the most expensive TV series ever mounted.

Production on Season 1 kicked off in Auckland in February 2020 but was put on hold for months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“As Bilbo says, ‘Now I think I am quite ready to go on another journey.’ Living and breathing Middle-earth these many months has been the adventure of a lifetime. We cannot wait for fans to have the chance to do so as well,” said Payne and McKay.

Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV Series Reveals First Look and Premiere Date

The first photo from Amazon Studios' 'The Lord of the Rings' is here, along with the long-awaited premiere date.

Ready for your first new look at Middle-earth in seven years?

Amazon’s ambitious The Lord of the Rings TV series finally has a confirmed premiere date, plus has released its first photo.

The debut season of LOTR will premiere Friday, Sept. 2, 2022 on Prime Video and it will air in 240 territories around the world.

It’s a longer wait than most expected. Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke previously told The Hollywood Reporter the “hope” was to have the show on the air in 2021, but that was before the coronavirus pandemic disrupted filmmaking.

“As Bilbo says, ‘Now I think I am quite ready to go on another journey,’” said showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay. “Living and breathing Middle-earth these many months has been the adventure of a lifetime. We cannot wait for fans to have the chance to do so as well.”

“I can’t express enough just how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-earth!” added Salke. “Our talented producers, cast, creative, and production teams have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this untold and awe-inspiring vision to life.”

The above photo is from the show’s first episode, but the studio is not identifying the character or actor at this time (so let the speculation begin). Still, it represents the first new look inside J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe in film form since Peter Jackson’s final The Hobbit film was released in 2014.

The project represents a massive initiative for the company. The Hollywood Reporter previously confirmed that Amazon will spend roughly $465 million for just the first season of the show – and the studio has committed to multiple seasons. The numbers make LOTR the most expensive television show of all time.

The official description: The Lord of the Rings “brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.”

The ensemble cast includes Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Lloyd Owen, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, Daniel Weyman and Sara Zwangobani.
