Dal sito The Wrap:

Will Smith’s Genie Unleashed in Early ‘Aladdin’ Footage

CinemaCon: Smith hams it up in first look at anticipated live0-action take from Guy Ritchie

Will Smith’s take on a beloved Disney character came into focus on Tuesday, during the studio’s presentation to U.S. movie theater owners at CinemaCon.

Disney distribution executive Cathleen Taff showed exhibitors a behind-the-scenes package from Guy Ritchie’s upcoming live adaptation of “Aladdin” — the first time anyone has seen Smith step into the role made famous by the voice work of Robin Williams.

“To state the obvious, no one could replicate the iconic performance of Robin Williams,” Taff said.

She described Smith’s performance as “a little ‘Fresh Prince,’ a little ‘Hitch,’ and a whole lot of attitude.”

Smith was living his full Arabian fantasy in the footage, decked out in jewels and robes and sporting a high ponytail on a shiny bald head. He can also be seen in numerous dance sequences, one in full harem drag dancing with scores of women in town square.

It’s unclear when the featurette might be released to the public. We also don’t know what classics and new numbers Smith might sing in the film.

The majority of footage centered on a Ritchie’s visual concept. The action movie native brings his frenetic pacing to the tale of a hustler who finds a magic lamp and changes his own destiny. Practical stunts included flying off of rooftops and rebounding on the awnings and marketplace stalls of the fictional Middle Eastern city.

The live-action “Aladdin” is set for release on May 24, 2019.

Dal sito ComicBook:

Attention turns to Aladdin. "Comedy, adventure, music, romance, and jaw-dropping visuals," Taff said. Alan Menken will compose is, with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul writing original songs. A behind-the-scenes look begins to play.

"You want to stay true to the original but you also want to do some original," Mena Massoud said. Guy Ritchie was sold on the opportunity to add "hot" action sequences as Will Smith put it. They really built Agrabah, a colorful and vibrant city, with intense stunts taking place here. "Jasmine is strong and knows her own mind," Naomi Scott said. "She says I'm not gonna go speechless anymore." Several clips see Will Smith dancing in his colorful Genie costume.

Dal sito DeadLine:

For Aladdin, which bows May 24, 2019, the featurette featured stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott in a fresh and vibrant take on the 1992 original. “Aladdin is one of those perfect stories. It just burrows down inside of you. You don’t know when you saw it. You don’t know how you know every word to the songs. You just do,” Smith said in the video. New distribution head Cathleen Taff describes Smith’s take on Genie as “a little Fresh Prince, a little Hitch, and a whole lot of attitude.” Along with songs from the classics as well as new tunes, the updated version will feature elaborate dance sequences.

Dal sito Hollywood Reporter:

Disney screened a featurette on another anticipated remake, the May 24, 2019, release Aladdin, which showed the making of the movie musical, everything from choreography to the bazaars of Agrabah. Stars Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott were interviewed for the promotion, with Scott talking about a more feminist and free-thinking portrayal of Princess Jasmine.

A big part of the presentation was devoted to Will Smith's portrayal of the Genie, with Disney's incoming distribution chief Cathleen Taff noting that the actor will put his own stamp on the character, which was much beloved in the original animation thanks to Robin Williams' performance. Said Taff, "Let’s just say a little Fresh Prince, a little Hitch and whole lot of attitude."

Dal sito EW:

Those in attendance also got a sneak peek of Mena Massoud as Aladdin, decked out in white as he dashes through the labyrinth of market streets in sequences that Smith said were “really exciting” and befitting of the cinematic style of director Guy Ritchie. The video also offered a brief look at Naomi Scott’s Princess Jasmine wearing her iconic turquoise costume and flowing pink robes as she sings and dances.

Dal sito Digital Spy:

Guy Ritchie's Aladdin will "honour and respect" its characters' culture, says Navid Negahban

The Sultan actor says Ritchie has been "truthful".

Guy Ritchie's live-action remake of Aladdin might be highly-anticipated, but there have been questions about how authentic the film will be to the culture of the characters.

Legion star Navid Negahban, who will play The Sultan in the 2019 movie, has reassured Disney fans by telling Digital Spy that the film will "honour and respect" the culture of Aladdin's setting and characters.

"It was fun," Negahban said of filming. "It was great to work with Guy Ritchie.

"He was trying to stay as truthful as possible to the story, and at the same time, honour and respect the culture and the background of each of the characters. He has his own sense of humour.

"And it will be something that I think everyone would identify themselves with one of the characters in the movie. It's more real. You can feel it, you can touch it.

"And I hope you guys enjoy it! I had a great time on the set in London. It was fun."

The production recently came under fire for 'browning up' white extras, with one artist claiming to have seen a group of background actors lining up to have their skin darkened.

Disney responded by saying that "more than 400 of the 500 background performers were Indian, Middle Eastern, African, Mediterranean and Asian".

Aladdin recently wrapped filming and is due for release in May 2019.

It will star Jack Ryan star Mena Massoud and Power Rangers' Naomi Scott as Aladdin and Jasmine, with Will Smith playing the Genie.

Dal sito Metro.co.uk:

Aladdin star Navid Negahban teases remake will have Guy Ritchie’s ‘signature’ style and more depth

Navid Negahban has offered some details on Guy Ritchie’s live action remake of Aladdin, teasing how it’ll have the director’s ‘signature’ style.
The 49-year-old actor is set to play The Sultan in the Disney remake, which also stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Will Smith as the Genie. It represents a significant departure for Guy Ritchie, being known for helming stylish action in Sherlock Holmes and gangster flicks Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk about working with Ritchie, Negahban stated the film will have the director’s style while respecting the original story.
‘Guy is very sensitive,’ Negahban says. ‘He was trying very hard to stay truthful and respectful to the culture and figuring out the best way to present the character or all the monsters. It’s going to be a fun movie.
Story Land ‘I think it stays truthful to the storyline, but at the same time, you will see nuances of the characters that wasn’t captured in the animation film. You will see depth in the characters instead of just being entertained by the story.’
Asked if it’ll feel like a Guy Ritchie film, Negahban added: ‘You will feel his signature. You will see his signature on the film. It will be a different shade of him.’
Production on the remake faced criticism for ‘browning up’ white extras, with an artist claiming to have seen background actors queuing up to have their skin darkened for the flick.
In response to the claims, Disney said ‘more than 400 of the 500 background performers were Indian, Middle Eastern, African, Mediterranean and Asian’.
If you fancy some Negahban in your life right now, you can catch him playing the Shadow King opposite Dan Stevens and Aubrey Plaza in Legion. Legion continues on Fox Tuesdays at 9pm, and Aladdin is due for release in May 2019.

Dal sito Hollywood Reporter:

'Aladdin': Everything to Know About the Live-Action Remake of the Disney Classic

Guy Ritchie directs the musical adaptation, starring Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott and Will Smith.
As Disney prepares to release several live-action remakes of animated classics, Aladdin is no exception. Following the success of recent adaptations such as The Jungle Book (2016) and Beauty and the Beast (2017), Disney fans will experience a "whole new world" as the love story of Aladdin and Princess Jasmines comes to life once again.

The 2019 reimagining, based on the story of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp from The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, will feature not only the original classic tunes of its 1992 predecessor, but will also include new music from composer Alan Menken.

The film stars Mena Massoud in the title role, alongside Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Will Smith as the Genie. Disney has yet to release any teaser clips or trailers.

Prior to its anticipated release in the spring, The Hollywood Reporter has compiled a cheat sheet of everything you need to know about the upcoming film.

ALADDIN CHEAT SHEET:

WHO

Prior to the start of filming, Disney faced challenges to lock down cast members to portray the main characters. In 2017, a worldwide casting call began to find the lead roles of Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, in search of diverse actors who could not only act but sing as well. After talk of potential leads from big stars to total unknowns, Aladdin finally found its cast.

Mena Massoud: plays the titular protagonist, Aladdin. Known around the streets of Agrabah as a scoundrel and a thief, the poor but warm-hearted Aladdin impersonates a prince in order to win the heart of the beautiful Princess Jasmine.

Naomi Scott: plays Princess Jasmine, the daughter of the Sultan who wishes to break free from the confines of the royal palace.

Will Smith: plays the beloved Genie, previously voiced by the late Robin Williams in the 1992 animated version. At this year's CinemaCon, Smith hinted that his interpretation of the genie will be "a little bit Hitch, a little Fresh Prince and a whole lot of attitude." While the cast has assured that the film certainly won't be replacing Robin Williams in any way, Smith will be putting his own spin on the wish-granter.

Marwan Kenzari: plays Jafar, the evil Grand vizier of Agrabah with plans to overthrow the Sultan.

Navid Negahban: plays The Sultan, who hopes to find a suitable husband for his daughter, Princess Jasmine.

Nasim Pedrad: plays Dalia, the handmaiden to Princess Jasmine. Although this character did not appear in the animated original, she is said to serve as Jasmine's confidante in the 2019 version.

Billy Magnussen: plays Prince Anders, a suitor for Jasmine's hand in marriage.

Numan Acar: plays Nakim, head of the palace guards and one of Jafar's henchmen.

WHAT

Similarly to its animated predecessor, Aladdin will follow the story of the Arab folktale Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. In the 1994 classic, Aladdin is a poor "street rat" with no real family to call his own, save for his mischievous monkey, Abu. Upon meeting the beautiful Princess Jasmine, Aladdin stumbles upon a magic lamp that reveals a wish-granting genie, who helps him win the heart of the princess. Although it was previously unknown whether the original film's animal characters would appear in the new adaptation, it has been confirmed that Iago the parrot and Jasmine's pet tiger Rajah will be appearing in some capacity.

In 2016, it was announced that Sherlock Holmes (2009) director Guy Ritchie would helm the production, while The Lego Movie's Dan Lin would produce. The film is expected to take on Ritchie's action-packed style of directing, as the filmmaker brings experience from his past work in crime and gangster-type genres.

In addition, award-winning composer Alan Menken will score the film, along with writing two new songs for the production with La La Land songwriters Pasek & Paul. Menken is widely known for scoring several Disney animated films such as Pocahontas, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Tangled and, of course, the original 1992 Aladdin.

WHEN

Aladdin is set for release on May 24, 2019, following the release of Disney's live-action Dumbo in March. Disney replaced Aladdin with the original date set for Star Wars: Episode IX, which is now set for release in December 2019.

Although principal photography for the film was meant to begin in July 2017, the studio's challenge to find a leading man halted production until September. Filming wrapped in January 2018.

WHERE

The story of Aladdin takes place in the fictional land of Agrabah, said to be located near the Jordan River in the Middle East. While most of the film was shot at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, some filming took place in Wadi Rum Desert, Jordan.

WHY

The appetite for new adaptations of old classics is greater now than ever before — especially for Disney, which has demonstrated huge initiative to create live-action versions of classic animated films. From Alice in Wonderland (2010) to Beauty and the Beast (2017), these adaptations have proven to be hugely successful, garnering billions of dollars for Walt Disney Studios.

As for Aladdin specifically, a live remake of the acclaimed love story offers not only a new take on the story, but also an opportunity to promote further diversity in Disney's repertoire. Although the studio received some backlash for casting decisions, in addition to accusations of whitewashing, Disney execs did make clear their intentions to accurately honor and portray the culture of the film throughout their search for a diverse cast.

Guy Ritchie's Aladdin cast called back to London for reshoots

Guy Ritchie and the cast of Disney's new live-action version of Aladdin were reportedly called back for reshoots to give the movie a more Middle-Eastern feel. Filming on the project, which stars Mena Massoud as the title character, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and Will Smith as the Genie, originally wrapped in January (18). However, a movie insider told newspaper The Sun that cast and crew had to return to London earlier this month to reshoot several scenes with additional Middle-Eastern looking extras - as Disney bosses didn't feel their existing footage was authentic enough. A movie insider said: "Disney wasn't massively impressed with the first draft and had its cast return to London to reshoot parts of the movie. They are eager for it to do as well as last year's Beauty & The Beast, which made £1 billion at the box office."

The Sun's source claimed that producers felt initial footage wasn't true enough to its Arabian folk story source material - and so cast new, Middle-Eastern extras in a number of scenes. "They want it to be respectful and feel authentic, so they cast more Middle Eastern extras for crowd scenes," the insider said, also revealing that Will's role as the Genie has been expanded. Aladdin has already been hit by controversy, after an extra in the film, Kaushal Odedra claimed pale-skinned extras had been made-up to look more Arabian. Disney chiefs denied Odedra's claims, stating that make-up had only been used for crew members, stunt performers, and animal handlers, to help them blend into crowd scenes.

Will was also spotted in the U.K. last week when he promoted his eco-friendly bottled water range by going undercover as a member of staff at Boots.

After the reshoots, the insider said Disney producers are now "a lot more confident" the movie will be a hit on its release next May. Representatives for the company did not respond to a request for comment.

Da Twitter:

Skyler Shuler: There is an ALADDIN story that is starting to circulate that is entirely false.

Elliott Bullock II‏ @ElliottJr122698 In risposta a @Skylerhxc : I found that article and it's BS! In Cinemacon and private test screenings, people gave Aladdin positive reactions. Whoever wrote that article is a lying idiot and really wants that movie to flop next year. I'm excited for Aladdin and waiting for some offical looks of the movie.

Aladdin has had two or three test screenings. As far as I know those screenings have been very positive. Families have come out liking it. By no means, the film is nowhere near complete. They are still in post-production. The CGI wasn't even complete in this past test screening they had about a month and a half ago. I know a couple of people that got to see the film and they said the whole theater was enjoying the heck out of it. From all the accounts I've heard, the film's actually pretty solid. I heard Will Smith is actually really funny as the Genie and from what people are saying his genie is very 'Fresh Prince of Bel Air'. It does it's very best not to copy Robin Williams'.

Q: You’re working on a live action version of “Aladdin” with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. How is that writing technique different from the movie and then the stage show?

Alan Menken: It’s still in flux of what’s going to be in the movie. One song in particular we’re very excited about, and I had a great time working with the boys. It’s my music, but influenced by having them in the room.

Q: This is Guy Ritchie’s first musical, so what has that been like?

Alan Menken: It’s been exciting and, at times, challenging. There are aspects of musical theater where he goes, “I really don’t want to do that.” So the songs will really be taken to new place.

Grazie!

Sembra bello.
Che ne pensate?
