Disney Announces Japanese, Animated "Marvel Disc Wars" Series

The Walt Disney Company (Japan) Ltd. announced today that it will produce the first Japanese Marvel animated television series targeted at boys. Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers is based on Marvel’s most popular team of Super Heroes, The Avengers and will premiere nationwide on terrestrial television in spring 2014.


Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will be produced by Nerima-ku, Tokyo-based Toei Animation Co., Ltd., which has produced multiple successful animated series for kids in Japan. Taito-ku, Tokyo-based Bandai Co., Ltd., which has a highly successful track record with major titles, will be responsible for character merchandising. The three companies will collaborate in creating a fully localized Japanese series as well as providing a lineup of attractive products and merchandise targeting the boys market.

The story will revolve around how The Avengers – Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk together with the help of Spider-Man and a group of teens, will harness their respective fighting skills and superhuman powers to foil Loki’s scheme to take over the world. Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will target boys in the 6-12 age group.

Walt Disney Japan, through its local content strategy—delivering content tailored to meet the needs of local consumers—is actively localizing content to fit the tastes and sensibilities of Japanese audiences. Though the company has produced and broadcast several localized programs, from the animated short-form series Fireball in 2008, Disney’s first animated series produced entirely in Japan, to Stitch!, which stars the popular Disney character with a change of setting from Hawaii to Okinawa. Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will be its first animated television series specifically targeted at boys and will delight Japanese viewers with an entirely new action-packed storyline that unfolds before their eyes in a high quality 2D animated format. Most recently, this Super Hero team was seen in the 2012 live-action movie, Marvel’s The Avengers, with a world-wide box office revenue that exceeded $1.5 billion and was the third-top grossing film of all time.

Through this collaboration, Marvel, Walt Disney Japan, Japan’s top animation studio Toei Animation, and character merchandising leader Bandai will together leverage their respective strengths to deliver a television series for nationwide broadcast and a range of merchandise that is sure to breathe new life into the boys market in Japan.

In the anime, portable capturing devices known as "Disks" were developed to capture evil villains. However, thanks to Loki's machinations, both villains and heroes are sealed up in these Disks and scattered around the world. Amid the chaos, five youths obtained the power to restore these Disks-sealed heroes through a program called "Biocode." These youths received five Disks that Spider-Man, who narrowly escaped being sealed himself, retrieved. Thus, these five can restore Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Wasp — the Avengers!

I Guardiani della Galassia Protagonisti della Scorsa Puntata

Furbescamente, i produttori della serie animata Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers (che poi sarebbero la Toei Animation e la Walt Disney Japan) hanno ben pensato di sincronizzare (se così vogliamo dire) l'uscita giapponese di Guardians of the Galaxy con la prima apparizione del gruppo nell'anime, cosa che possiamo testimoniare con il video di cui sopra. Sono andato quindi a curiosare in giro per il web per vedere se l'operazione ha già portato qualche frutto nelle casse della Marvel, ma al momento sembra che in Giappone vada ancora fortissimo il film animato dedicato a Ruroni Kenshin (seguito a ruota dal nuovo film dedicato al Pianeta delle Scimmie). Aspettando di avere qualche dato più preciso sul weekend cinematografico giapponese, andiamo qui a capire cosa diavolo ci fanno i Guardians of the Galaxy in Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers e cosa hanno combinato i nostri eroi nell'anime più assurdo dedicato ai supereroi marveliani!
Mettiamo subito le cose in chiaro: la serie Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers è un prodotto televisivo animato dedicato ai bambini dai 6 ai 12 anni che ricalca, a grandi linee, quegli anime commerciali stile Yu-Gi-Oh! e simili dove, per intenderci, i protagonisti usano dei prodotti speciali (in questo caso i Disk) che i telespettatori possono acquistare per sentirsi come gli eroi della storia. Una "commercialata" bella e buona? Si e anche no perché, rispetto a Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh! e le altre serie di questo tipo, alla Walt Disney interessa soprattutto far conoscere i protagonisti del suo universo narrativo ai giovani giapponesi, che possono qui appassionarsi alle avventure di Iron Man e soci grazie anche ad un gioco collegato alla serie animata. La chiave di tutto il successo di Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers sta quindi nei protagonisti dell'anime che, giocoforza, devono adattarsi al pubblico per il quale sono stati destinati. E in cosa si traduce tutto ciò? Beh, guardate gli occhioni dolci di Rocket Raccoon e poi ditemi se il procione più sarcastico e violento dell'universo marveliano non vi sembra qui un personaggio decisamente "kawaii"!

Non so se poi la cosa è stata voluta dagli animatori o meno, ma i Guardians of the Galaxy di Marvel Disk Wars: The Avenger sono praticamente identici alle controparti "reali" che i ragazzini giapponesi possono ammirare al cinema. Sicuramente i produttori hanno fatto in modo che i telespettatori potessero avvicinarsi a Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot e Rocket Raccoon nella maniera più immediata possibile e, dato che hanno un film da proiettare in lungo e in largo per il Giappone, l'idea di vestire i Guardians of the Galaxy animati come quelli della pellicola omonima non dev'essere stata una scelta così difficile da prendere!

Non ho ancora visto ne Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers e ne tantomeno Guardians of the Galaxy quindi, almeno per il momento, mi astengo dal commentare i rispettivi prodotti. Ma dato che la cosa è abbastanza curiosa, vi lascio qui con la clip dedicata alla puntata di Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers dedicata ai Guardians of the Galaxy!

Dopo i Guardiani della Galassia, infatti, a comparire nella serie animata dei Vendicatori sarà il mercenario chiacchierone Deadpool! Trovate il nuovo promo comodamente in calce a questa notizia.
Il nuovo anime è prodotto dalla Toei Animation in collaborazione con la Marvel. La serie televisiva, ha fatto il suo debutto su TV Tokyo. Questo anime, a differenza dai precedenti, è indirizzato ad un pubblico più giovane, ovvero la fascia 6-12 anni.
