‘Star Wars’ Series From ‘Russian Doll’ Co-Creator Leslye Headland in the Works at Disney Plus (EXCLUSIVE)

A new “Star Wars” series is in the works at Disney Plus, Variety has learned from sources. The series hails from Leslye Headland, the co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series “Russian Doll.”

Details of the exact plot of the series are being kept under wraps, but sources say it will be a female-centric series that takes place in a different part of the “Star Wars” timeline than other projects. Headland is said to be attached to write and serve as showrunner on the series, with the show currently staffing.

Reps for Disney and Headland did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

Headland also directed multiple episodes of “Russian Doll.” The show was nominated for 13 Emmy Awards for its first season, ultimately winning three. Headland began her career writing and directing the “Seven Deadly Plays” series, which includes “Bachelorette” and “Assistance.” “Bachelorette” was the basis for her directorial film debut starring Kirsten Dunst. Her other film credits include writing the 2014 remake of “About Last Night” and writing and directing “Sleeping with Other People.” Besides “Russian Doll,” her other TV credits include “Terriers,” “Blunt Talk,” “SMILF,” and “Black Monday.” She is currently under an overall deal at Fox 21 Television Studios, with the studio now under the Disney umbrella.

She is repped by Michael Sugar at Sugar23 and Steve Younger at Myman Greenspan. She is repped by UTA for directing.

News of the new series development comes after Variety exclusively reported that a third season of “The Mandalorian” is already in the works at Disney Plus ahead of the second season premiere later this year. “The Mandalorian,” one of the launch titles for the Disney-branded streamer, proved to be a major hit and pop culture phenomenon upon its release.

There are currently two other live-action “Star Wars” shows in the pipeline at Disney Plus — an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor and a Cassian Andor/”Rogue One” prequel series starring Diego Luna. Variety exclusively reported that Joby Harold had recently joined the Obi-Wan series as the writer, while Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller recently joined the Cassian Andor series.

The Acolyte: Amandla Stenberg to Star in Disney+ Star Wars Series

According to Variety, The Hate U Give star Amandla Stenberg has entered negotiations to star in Lucasfilm’s newest Star Wars series for Disney+ The Acolyte, which hails from Emmy nominee Leslye Headland. The 23-year-old actress is no stranger to the sci-fi genre as she previously starred in two dystopian films, 2012’s The Hunger Games and 2018’s The Darkest Minds.

Stenberg’s casting comes following the recent addition of Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Ivanna Sakhno, who have both been cast to star opposite Rosario Dawson in another live-action Star Wars series, Ahsoka.

The Acolyte is described as a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers that will be set within the final days of the High Republic era. Further details about its characters haven’t been revealed yet, but the project title is referred to as a Sith in the beginning stages of their training under an experienced Sith Lord.

The Disney+ series will be written and executive produced by Leslye Headland (Russian Doll), who will also be serving as the showrunner. Production is expected to begin in mid-2022.

In addition to The Acolyte, Lucasfilm is also currently developing a number of Star Wars projects including The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian Season 3, Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Cassian Andor series, and more.

‘Star Wars’ Series ‘The Acolyte’ Sets Amandla Stenberg to Star

The “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” will officially be led by Amandla Stenberg.

The announcement came Friday, with the official “Star Wars” account tweeting out a picture of Stenberg. Going farther back in time than any live-action “Star Wars” title before it, “The Acolyte” is set a century before the events of “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace.” The series promises to depict the galaxy at the peak of the era of the High Republic, when the Jedi were at their strongest and the Sith were believed to have been eradicated from the galaxy.

Stenberg was rumored for the role in a report from December 2021, but the news is now official.

“Russian Doll” co-creator Leslye Headland is showrunning the series, with Stenberg set to star (“The Hate U Give”). Headland is drawing at least in part from Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The High Republic” publishing effort. Announced in February 2020 and launched throughout 2021, the “High Republic” series spans comic books, audio dramas, web series and novels. They’ve served as a kind of R&D department for where Lucasfilm could next take “Star Wars” storytelling.

Stenberg, who identifies as non-binary, broke out in the role of Rue in the 2012 feature adaptation of “The Hunger Games.” They have since gone on to star in films like “The Hate U Give,” “The Darkest Minds,” “Everything, Everything,” and the recent feature version of “Dear Evan Hansen,” playing Alana Beck. Stenberg has also appeared on television shows such as “Sleepy Hollow,” “The Eddy,” and “Mr. Robinson.”

“We’re taking a look at the political and personal and spiritual things that came up in a time period that we don’t know much about,” Headland told Vanity Fair in May. “My question when watching ‘The Phantom Menace’ was always like, ‘Well, how did things get to this point?’ How did we get to a point where a Sith lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi pick up on it? Like, what went wrong? What are the scenarios that led us to this moment?”
