Rob Marshall Takes On Sondheim's 'Into the Woods,' Signs 2-Year Disney Deal (Exclusive)
'Woods' furthers Marshall’s relationship with Disney, where he made his last film, 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which has earned just over $1 billion globally.
Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall is reteaming with Disney for a film adaptation of Into the Woods, the classic 1980s Broadway musical written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine.Woods furthers Marshall’s relationship with Disney, where he made his last film, 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which has earned just over $1 billion globally.
Extending that commitment, he tells THR that he and producing partner John DeLuca have signed a two-year, first-look deal with the studio and plan to move more actively into production through their company, LUCAMAR.
“You have to be very careful not to spread yourself so thin that you are doing a lot of nothing,” he cautions, “but we love that idea. Movies for a director take so long — two and a half or three years. It would be nice to be able to develop something and let someone else go off and do it.”
Into the Woods — which intertwines several classic fairytale characters, including Cinderella, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood, with the story of a baker and his wife’s attempt to have a family — returns the helmer and longtime choreographer to the musical genre at which he has excelled with movies including Oscar winner Chicago (2002) and Nine (2009).
He says he first started thinking of it a year ago, while in postproduction on Pirates. After calling Lapine, the two got together in producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s Santa Monica offices.
“We talked about the meaning of it and how timely it is still, and about family – that’s always at the core of our lives,” he says. “James said: ‘But I don’t want to put it in development for another 10 years.’ ” Marshall agreed, and then brought it to Disney Studios chairman Rich Ross and production president Sean Bailey. “They were classy, classy, classy and incredibly generous to us,” he adds,
Lapine is now at work on the script, which Marshall expects to feature new songs by Sondheim.
The project reunites him with the musical giant, for whom Marshall worked as a choreographer twice in the 1990s, with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Company. He first met Sondheim at Broadway director Hal Prince’s Christmas party in 1993, when Marshall was choreographing Prince’s stage version of The Kiss of the Spider Woman, his first Broadway outing as choreographer.
“He’s a genius when it comes to his score,” Marshall says of Sondheim, “but what’s so extraordinary is, he really understands all the elements of theater — the choreography, the book and the production design — and has an amazing sense of the whole.”
Marshall at one point had thought of directing Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, but that fell through because of “timing,” he says. Subsequently, it was made as a film by director Tim Burton, with Depp starring.
There have been several other attempts to bring Into the Woods to the screen.
At one point in 1994, it got as far as a reading at Penny Marshall’s house, with Robin Williams, Goldie Hawn and Cher; later, it was developed at Columbia Pictures with director Rob Minkoff attached and Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan and Susan Sarandon in talks to star.
Now Marshall is at his home base in New York, collaborating extensively on Woods and Thin Man, uncertain which will go first.
“Usually the movie tells you,” he says. “I’ve been working with Billy Ray on Thin Man and he’s writing as we speak. We are very close to having a first draft.” Both projects, he says, “are real collaborative efforts.”
As to the next Pirates, he notes: “Terry [Rossio] is writing it and he’s working incredibly hard and he did a draft and rethought it all and started working on it again. You want to make sure you are asking the audience to come back to see an exciting adventure and it has to reach that caliber, and if not there’s no reason to do it. I know Johnny feels the same way: He needs to see a script, but he would be happy — if it’s the right script — to put that hat and sword back on.”
sembra molto interessante

As reported back in June, Rob Marshall has made Stephen Sondheim's INTO THE WOODS his next project at Warner Bros/Disney - and a starry reading just has kicked the project off.
BroadwayWorld has confirmed that the cast of the screenplay reading, which took place yesterday, included (in alphabetical order): Nina Arianda as The Baker's Wife; Christine Baranski as the Stepmother; Tammy Blanchard as Florinda; Victoria Clark as Cinderella's Mother/Giant; James Corden as the Baker; David Garrison as the Narrator; Ivan Hernandez as the Wolf; Megan Hilty as Lucinda; Cheyenne Jackson as Rapunzel's Prince; Allison Janney as Jack's Mother; Anna Kendrick as Cinderella; Michael McGrath as the Steward/Baker's Father; Donna Murphy as the Witch; Laura Osnes as Rapunzel; Taylor Trensch as Jack; Casey Whyland as Little Red Riding Hood; and Patrick Wilson as Cinderella's Prince.
The cast for the film has not yet been announced, but BroadwayWorld has learned that stage and screen legend Meryl Streep is in talks to join the film as the Witch, but was unable to make the reading.
James Lapine, the original book writer of INTO THE WOODS, is reworking the script for the screenplay, while Sondheim is expected to contribute some new songs.
Marshall's films have been honored with a total of 23 Academy Award nominations - winning nine, including Best Picture. His most recent film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, has grossed over one billion dollars at the worldwide box office becoming the "8th Highest Grossing Picture in History." He is currently developing "The Thin Man" starring Johnny Depp.
Marshall's film "Nine" was nominated for four Academy Awards, five Golden Globes and 10 Critics Choice Awards. His previous directorial efforts include the Academy Award-winning films "Chicago" and "Memoirs of a Geisha." For his work on "Chicago," winner of six Oscars including Best Picture, Marshall received the Directors Guild Award, an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe Award nomination, a BAFTA nomination, The National Board of Review Award and the New York Film Critics Online Award, both for best directorial debut, as well as the American Choreography Award. His epic film "Memoirs of a Geisha" was the winner of three Oscars, three BAFTA Awards and a Golden Globe. Both "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Chicago" were nominated for CAS Awards.
Marshall executive produced, directed and choreographed the NBC television event "Tony Bennett: An American Classic." He won his second Directors Guild Award for this production as well as three Emmy Awards himself for Direction, Choreography and Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. He directed and choreographed Disney/ABC's critically acclaimed movie musical "Annie," which received 12 Emmy nominations, a CAS nomination and won the prestigious Peabody Award. Former CAS President Edward L. Moskowitz commented, "It was to great to work with Rob Marshall on "Annie". Rob's depth of experience in live entertainment enhanced his inspirational leadership on the set and I am proud that the Cinema Audio Society has decided to honor him with our Filmmaker Award."
A six-time Tony Award nominee and George Abbott Award winner, Marshall's stage work includes co-directing and choreographing the worldwide award-winning Broadway production of "Cabaret" and directing and choreographing the Broadway revival of "Little Me," starring Martin Short. He made his Broadway choreographic debut with "Kiss of the Spider Woman," directed by Harold Prince, which also played London's West End and Vienna. He followed that with productions of "She Loves Me" on Broadway and London; "Damn Yankees" on Broadway, National Tour and London; Blake Edwards' "Victor/Victoria" on Broadway; "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" on Broadway; "Company" on Broadway; "The Petrified Forest" at the New York Public Theatre, and "Promises, Promises" for City Center Encores! Meryl Streep in un film Disney? A dream come true!
screen legend Meryl Streep is in talks to join the film as the Witch, but was unable to make the reading.
Volevo l'esclusiva XD.
Day, sicuro che l'articolo sia recente?
He is currently developing "The Thin Man" starring Johnny Depp.

Meryl Streep in Talks for Lead in Rob Marshall’s INTO THE WOODS; Anna Kendrick, Patrick Wilson, and More Read for Roles
by Adam Chitwood Posted: October 3rd, 2012 at 7:59 am
Following the success (commercially, that is) of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, director Rob Marshall was mulling a couple of projects as his follow-up. After his remake of The Thin Man with Johnny Depp was put on hold, the Chicago director set his sights on returning to the world of song and dance for his next film. Marshall is prepping an adaptation of the fairy tale-themed musical Into the Woods for Disney, and he recently held a star-studded screenplay read that included the likes of Anna Kendrick, Patrick Wilson, Allison Janney, and many more. Additionally, it sounds like he may have settled on Meryl Streep for the lead role of the Witch.
Hit the jump for more, including the full list of actors who were in attendance for the screenplay reading.
News of the reading comes courtesy of Broadway World (via The Film Stage), and here’s a list of the actors that read:
Nina Arianda as The Baker’s Wife
Christine Baranski as the Stepmother
Tammy Blanchard as Florinda
Victoria Clark as Cinderella’s Mother/Giant
James Corden as the Baker
David Garrison as the Narrator
Ivan Hernandez as the Wolf
Megan Hilty as Lucinda
Cheyenne Jackson as Rapunzel’s Prince
Allison Janney as Jack’s Mother
Anna Kendrick as Cinderella
Michael McGrath as the Steward/Baker’s Father
Donna Murphy as the Witch
Laura Osnes as Rapunzel
Taylor Trensch as Jack
Casey Whyland as Little Red Riding Hood
Patrick Wilson as Cinderella’s Prince
It’s very important to note that screenplay reads happen all the time, and the actors that participate aren’t necessarily the actors that are gunning for the roles. The purpose of the read is for the director to hear the script performed out loud, so he can then go back and make the necessary adjustments with the screenwriter. That said, we know Kendrick has a set of killer pipes and I’d love to see her tackle the role of Cinderella in the full feature.
Broadway World also notes that Meryl Streep couldn’t make the reading, but she’s apparently in talks to take on the lead role of the Witch. She made no secret of the fact that she loved doing Mamma Mia!, so it’s not a stretch to see her shining in Into the Woods.
James Lapine, who wrote the book for the stage musical iteration of Into the Woods, is apparently reworking the script while Sondheim is expected to contribute a few new songs to the film. I didn’t think Marshall showed much promise as an action director with On Stranger Tides, but Chicago is incredible so I’m definitely interested in seeing him bring this musical fairy tale to the big screen.

We last heard that Disney’s Into the Woods movie was rolling into production over a year ago, with the director of 2002′s Chicago aboard to bring to life a version of the stage musical penned by its original writer. And that was exciting enough. But now, in an interview about his new stage musical, that writer, James Lapine, says that Meryl Streep is already on board.
No Valerio, che io ricordi mai!

Did Meryl confirm herself for "Into the Woods"?
I've been uncertain if I should post on this over the last few days. However, I think it's pretty clear that these articles are legitimate as are its contents. Evidently The Iron Lady is finally being released in Beijing, and Meryl gave several phone interviews discussing, among other things, her upcoming projects. Here's a link to what I think is the best and most descriptive article. I know it's a little weird and hopefully it automatically translates from Chinese into English on your browser as it did mine. Because it's translated by a computer, some of the syntax is irregular which makes it mildly difficult to comprehend at times, but we get the important parts.
The section of interest for me is of course what her upcoming film schedule is. She reports that she has finished up August: Osage County, begins shooting The Homesman in May, and (most exciting) will starting Into the Woods in October. Whoomp there it is! If her work as "the Witch" truly begins shooting this fall, I think we can assume a late 2014 release which means...you guessed it. Into the Woods, not surprisingly, will likely look to be an Oscar contender, as was the intent with Rob Marshall's other two recent musicals, Chicago and Nine. I wish we had American journalists who could get Meryl to divulge so much juicy information in one interview!
Ottimo!!
Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep in Talks for Disney's Into the Woods

April 26, 2013
Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep are in talks to star in director Rob Marshall's Into the Woods at Walt Disney Pictures, reports Variety. Marshall, whose credits include Chicago and Nine, previously worked with Depp on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
"Into the Woods" weaves together the story of several of the most beloved fairytales (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel) into the original story of a baker and his wife who try to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child, exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests and their desire for “happily ever after.” Streep would play the evil witch in the film.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book and direction by James Lapine, "Into the Woods" earned 10 nominations at the 1988 Tony Awards, winning three including best score and best book of a musical. The 2002 Broadway revival won a Tony for best revival of a musical.
David Krane (Chicago, Nine) is working on the music for the film, while James Lapine penned the script, based on his book for the musical. John DeLuca (Chicago, Nine) will serve as producer.
Evvai!
Davvero interessante! ...e che cast!
Assolutamente STUPENDO!
E deadline dice che l'accordo è quasi fatto!

Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep filming together and singing. Who can resist? Not Disney any longer. It’s taken 16 months to get off the ground — ever since January 2012, when the studio sent out a press release announcing Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine) would be directing Stephen Sondheim’s iconic 1987 Broadway musical Into The Woods as a feature film for Disney. A table read was held in NYC this past October featuring Donna Murphy, Megan Hilty, Christine Baranski, Allison Janney and quite a few other Broadway stars. Buzz of Streep’s interest first surfaced last summer and this past week Marshall confirmed in an interview to Playbill that she was “in” to the play the witch. Today Variety reported Depp’s interest. Now I’ve confirmed that Johnny and Meryl “almost have their deals wrapped up for the film,” according to sources. Marshall directed 2011’s Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 (which might have been more palatable as a musical because it stunk as the franchise’s fourquel) so he’s already Mouse friendly. The original musical with music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by James Lapine is about a childless baker and his wife who attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront the witch that put the spell on them. Along the way, they encounter classic fairy tale characters. Depp previously starred in the DreamWorks film version of Sondheim’s dark musical Sweeney Todd which was also the last time he sang on camera. Streep in films had a nice turn warbling country Western in the final scenes of Postcards From The Edge until the longtime Abba fan became the singing and dancing queen of Mamma Mia!. For Into The Woods, Marshall frequent collaborators John DeLuca will produce while David Krane will arrange the music. Lapine penned the screenplay.

The film would mark the actor's first singing role since starring in Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Fleet Street."
Johnny Depp is in talks to star in Disney's film adaptation of Broadway musical Into the Woods, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
OUR EDITOR RECOMMENDS
The film would mark Depp's first singing role since starring in Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Fleet Street.
The project would also reunite Depp with Rob Marshall, who directed Disney’s fourth Pirates of the Caribbean outing. In addition to his Broadway credits as director and choreographer, Marshall directed the musical feature films Chicago and Nine, as well as the 1999 TV movie, Annie.
Into the Woods is a darkly comic mashup of classic fairy tales that revolves around a childless Baker and his wife, who attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront the Witch that put the spell on them. Along the way, they encounter a group of characters including Rapunzel, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.
Meryl Streep will play the plum role of the vain and charismatic Witch. In what would be a key supporting role, Depp will play a hungry and sexy variation of the fairy tale Wolf, a part usually undertaken in the stage version by the same actor who plays Cinderella's Prince.
James Lapine wrote the screenplay, based on his book for the 1986 musical. The Tony-winning original score is by Stephen Sondheim, also the composer behind Sweeney Todd. Frequent Marshall collaborator David Krane is working on the music arrangements for the film.
John DeLuca is producing.
The film would also keep Depp in the Disney fold. The actor, who has made a number of blockbusters with the studio, including the Pirates films and Burton's Alice, will next be seen in Disney's The Lone Ranger. Depp is currently shooting Wally Pfister's directing debut Transcendence. He is repped by UTA and attorney Jacob Bloom.
Cast Rumors:
Si fa sempre più concreta la possibilità che l'attrice Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man) possa essere scritturata per il ruolo di Cenerentola...
Vi piacerebbe come scelta?
Meryl Streep: La Strega
James Corden: Il Fornaio
Emma Stone: Cenerentola
Johnny Depp: Il Lupo

One Man, Two Guvnors Star James Corden in Talks for Into the Woods Film Adaptation
By Adam Hetrick
03 May 2013
Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor James Corden is in talks to appear in the Rob Marshall-directed film adaptation of Into the Woods, according to the Daily Mail.
Details of which role the One Man, Two Guvnors star would play were not reported, but the Daily Mail states that Corden was recently in New York to discuss the film with Marshall. Corden was part of a reading of the screenplay last fall and took on the role of the Baker.
Corden is also set to appear in the Donmar Warehouse production of The Same Deep Water As Me, according to the Daily Mail.
As previously reported, the film adaptation of the dark, Tony Award-winning fairytale musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine will begin filming in London this September.

Marc Platt, Rob Marshall, John DeLuca and Disney produce the film that will be directed by Academy Award-winning "Chicago" director Marshall.
Marshall confirmed to Playbill.com's Seth Rudetksy that Academy Award winner Meryl Streep will star as the Witch in the film. Read the original report in Rudetsky's April 15 Onstage and Backstage column here.
It has also been reported that "Sweeney Todd" star Johnny Depp is in talks to appear in the film as well. Variety reports that Depp will portray the Baker, while the Hollywood Reporter states that he is in talks to portray the Wolf.
The creative team is currently seeking actors for the roles of Jack and Little Red.
Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning Into the Woods book writer Lapine authored the screenplay based on his own book for the 1988 musical. During an October reading of the screenplay, Lapine had streamlined the musical into a two-hour treatment for the screen.
Composer-arranger David Krane (Road to Qatar), who penned the arrangements for Marshall's film adaptations of Chicago and Nine, is working on arrangements for the Into the Woods film adaptation. DeLuca also produced Marshall's screen adaptations of "Nine" and "Chicago."
Into the Woods features a Tony-winning score by Sondheim and Tony-winning book by Lapine, who also staged both Broadway productions of the musical. Into the Woods premiered on Broadway in 1987 at the Martin Beck Theatre starring Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien, Joanna Gleason, Kim Crosby and Robert Westenberg. The original cast performance was preserved by PBS' American Playhouse in 1991. A 2002 Broadway revival played the Broadhurst Theatre.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal are in talks to join Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep in director Rob Marshall's adaptation of the Broadway musical Into the Woods.
Into the Woods weaves together the story of several of the most beloved fairytales (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel) into the original story of a Baker and his wife who try to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child, exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests and their desire for “happily ever after.”
With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book and direction by James Lapine, "Into the Woods" earned 10 nominations at the 1988 Tony Awards, winning three including best score and best book of a musical. The 2002 Broadway revival won a Tony for best revival of a musical.
According to the trade, Gyllenhaal and Pine would play the musical's two princes, Cinderella’s Prince and Rapunzel's Prince, brothers who are pompous and self-absorbed.
Walt Disney Pictures is expected to start filming in the fall. James Lapine wrote the script for the film, which is produced by John DeLuca.
Secondo me sarebbe perfetta

'The Good Wife' Star Christine Baranski to Reteam With 'Chicago' Director on Disney's 'Into the Woods' (Exclusive)
Emily Blunt is in negotiations to star alongside Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp in Rob Marshall's musical

"The Good Wife" star Christine Baranski is in talks to join the starry ensemble of Disney's adaptation of the Broadway musical "Into the Woods," TheWrap has learned.
Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp have closed deals, while Emily Blunt is in negotiations for the female lead. James Corden has been rumored for the male lead but has not officially been cast.
Rob Marshall, who is renowned for his prowess with musicals, is directing the darkly comic mash-up of classic fairy tales.
Story follows the Baker and his wife (Blunt) as they venture into the woods to confront the witch (Streep) responsible for putting a family curse on the childless couple.
Baranski participated in a reading of the script back in October where she played Cinderella's mean-spirited and demanding stepmother.
As with Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhaal, who are circling the princely roles of Cinderella and Rapunzel's self-absorbed love interests, Baranski has not received an offer yet. However, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap she's in talks to join the cast, though a scheduling conflict with "The Good Wife" is one obstacle that must be overcome.
Marshall is directing the film from a script by James Lapine, based on his book for the 1986 musical. Stephen Sondheim wrote the Tony-winning original score, and Marshall's longtime collaborator David Krane is working on musical arrangements for the film. John DeLuca is producing the movie, which is expected to start production in the fall.
Baranski, who hasn't been seen on the big screen since 2010's "The Bounty Hunter," previously worked with Marshall on "Chicago," the Oscar-winning musical in which she played Mary Sunshine. The Emmy-winning actress also co-starred alongside Streep in the Universal musical "Mamma Mia!" She's represented by UTA and Viking Entertainment.
Grande Christine Baranski!!! L'ho ADORATA in Mamma Mia! !

Tracey Ullman in Talks to Join Disney's 'Into the Woods' (Exclusive)
4:12 PM PDT 6/12/2013 by Borys Kit
Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, and Chris Pine are among those playing classic fairy tale characters in the adaptation of the Broadway musical.
Tracey Ullman is in negotiations to join the growing cast of Into the Woods, Disney’s adaptation of the Broadway musical being directed by Rob Marshall.
Ullman will join an all-star roster that is likley to include Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Emily Blunt, all of whom are in various stages of negotiations to be part of the production.
The play is a darkly comic mashup of classic fairy tales that revolves around a childless baker and his wife (Blunt), who attempt to lift a family curse by journeying into the woods to confront the witch that put the spell on them. Along the way, they encounter a group of characters including Rapunzel, Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.
Ullman will play the mother to Jack the Giant Killer, who has yet to be cast.
Streep is playing a witch and Depp is taking on a variation of the fairy tale wolf. Gyllenhaal and Pine play princes to Cinderella and Rapunzel.
The role will be Ullman’s first film gig since appearing in I Could Never Be Your Woman, a 2007 comedy by Amy Heckerling, which starred Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd.
Into the Woods directed by Rob Marshall opens on December 25, 2014

Ottimo!
Grazie delle delucidazioni Day.

Anna Kendrick sarà Cenerentola in Into the Woods

There's been a lot of news lately about "Into the Woods," Walt Disney Pictures' big holiday release for 2014. What with Jake Gyllenhaal & Chris Pine recently signing to play the Princes in this big screen adaptation of Steven Sondheim's Tony Award-winning musical. Not to mention Emily Blunt agreeing to play the Baker's Wife, while Les Misérables star Daniel Huttlestone & Anna Kendrick have been in talks to play Jack and Cinderella, respectively.
Given that Meryl Streep has already committed to play the Witch and Johnny Depp has previously signed to play the Big Bad Wolf ... Well, it's been kind of fun watching how this new Rob Marshall project has been coming together. Week to week following which new stars have agreed to join the cast of Disney's "Into the Woods."
That said, it's important to note here that Hollywood has already taken several stabs at turning this stage musical into a movie. And while each of these early attempts at turning "Into the Woods" into a film had plenty of star power (not to mention a surprising number of Disney ties) involved, they never quite got off the ground.
The initial attempt was made back in 1994, just three years after the original production of "Into the Woods" had closed on Broadway. Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope company first optioned the film rights for this project, then hired Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (of "Parenthood " & "City Slickers " fame) to write the screenplay. Sondheim and "Into the Woods" director & librettist James Lapine were then signed to serve as consultants on this proposed motion picture.
Now where this gets interesting is that Ganz & Lowell had so enjoyed working with Penny Marshall on "A League of Their Own " that -- when they finished a first draft of their "Into the Woods" screenplay -- Lowell & Babaloo immediately slipped Penny a copy and then asked her if she might consider directing this new movie musical.
And Marshall was intrigued enough by the material that -- in October of 1994 -- she arranged an all-star reading of Ganz & Lowell's script at her home. And virtually everyone who was anyone back in 1990s Hollywood was there that day. We're talking Robin Williams reading for the Baker, Goldie Hawn as the Baker's Wife and Cher as the Witch. Wait. It gets better. Steve Martin was the Big Bad Wolf, Mayim Bialik was Red Riding Hood, Elijah Wood was Jack and Roseanne Barr was Jack's Mother. Plus Danny DeVito as the Giant and Brendan Fraser and Kyle MacLachlan as the handsome princes.

From what I've heard from a friend who was there that afternoon, it quickly became apparent that -- when you applied this much star power to all that brilliant material that Sondheim & Lapine had already created -- you had the makings of a massively entertaining motion picture. The only problem was ... How was the studio ever going to structure the budget for a movie version of "Into the Woods" (which was already going to involve elaborate sets & costumes plus tons of special effects) in a way that they could then actually afford all these stars and still eventually manage to turn a profit on this project?
American Zoetrophe could never quite find a way to make those numbers work. So in spite of the fact that they really, really, REALLY did want to turn "Into the Woods" into a movie musical, they eventually let the film rights slip away to Sony Pictures in 1995. Where it was then announced Jim Henson Productions would be adapting this stage show to the screen.
And the folks over at Henson, they had some very intriguing ideas in regards as to how to properly mount a movie version of "Into the Woods." First was to hire Rob Minkoff (i.e. the co-director of Walt Disney Pictures' hugely successful 1994 release, "The Lion King ") to helm this production. Second was to cast Billy Crystal as the Baker and Meg Ryan as the Baker's Wife. Which would have been the first time that these two had worked together since their super-popular pairing in 1989's "When Harry Met Sally ."
Copyright 1989 Columbia Pictures. All rights reserved
Then -- when you factor in Jim Henson Productions' decision to hire Susan Sarandon to play the Witch in the "Into the Woods" movie -- well, you then had a relatively affordable version of this proposed motion picture that still had plenty of star power. Not to mention a great promotional hook (i.e. Crystal & Ryan back together again for the first time since "When Harry Met Sally") for this project. Sondheim & Lapine allegedly thought highly enough of this proposed production that they then agreed to craft five or six new songs for the film. So with great fanfare in the Hollywood trades, it was then announced that shooting of the movie version of "Into the Woods" would begin in the late summer of 1996. Which then got pushed back to the Spring of 1997. And after that ... nothing.
So what happened? As happens all too often in Tinsel Town, there was a management change at Sony Pictures. And the executive who had been really excited about turning "Into the Woods" into a film was replaced by another executive who wasn't all that big on movie musicals. And without this exec at Sony signing off on that proposed project's budget, "Into the Woods" never ever got greenlit.
Which may have been -- in the end -- a good thing. For I actually own a copy of Lowell & Babaloo's adaptation of "Into the Woods." And while they obviously had to make some changes to this stage show's story in order to make that movie into something which Jim Henson Productions could produce (EX: The Three Little Pigs were inserted into the storyline so that Jim Henson's Creature Shop could then produce some elaborate animatronic versions of these characters), some of the story adjustments that Ganz & Mandel made would have not have gone over with Sondheim fans. Take -- for example -- SPOILER AHEAD having the Baker's Wife survive her fateful encounter with the giant's wife by climbing up into this enormous woman's tangled hair and then hiding there.
So in the long run, it was probably for the best that it took this long (almost two decades now) for "Into the Woods" to finally be adapted to the screen. From what I hear, the screenplay that Rob Marshall will be using was actually written by James Lapine, the man who both directed & wrote the libretto for the original Broadway show. And from what I've been told, this version of the film script is remarkably faithful to the stage show. Which means that the second half of this Holiday 2014 Walt Disney Pictures release is going to be AGAIN - SPOILER AHEAD pretty bleak.
But what do you folks think? Are you looking forward to Disney's "Into the Woods" ? More importantly, do you like that the Mouse & Rob Marshall seem to be circling back on Penny Marshall's original idea? Which was to turn this movie musical into a genuine event by loading the production up with as many stars as possible?
Your thoughts?
Rapunzel is a new comer from Broadway and she is amazing. I bet you'll be pleased with her performance, and I'm pretty excited for people to finally see her on a worldwide stage
Mannaggia, bisogna salutare Jake Gyllenhaal, costretto a lasciare Into the Woods per le riprse di un altro film ...

Gyllenhaal Out of the Woods as Nightcrawler Gets Moving
Source: The Wrap

In more Jake Gyllenhaal news, the 32-year-old actor may not be playing the Prince in Walt Disney Pictures' Cinderella musical Into the Woods, directed by Rob Marshall, after all, because his indie thriller Nightcrawler, directed by The Bourne Legacy co-screenwriter Dan Gilroy, has just been given the go-ahead.
According to The Wrap, scheduling conflicts forced the actor to choose between the two very different projects and Gyllenhaal went with Gilroy's directorial debut, which looks to start shooting for five weeks in early October. Another reason for the decision may be that Gyllenhaal is producing the thriller along with Dan's brother Tony Gilroy, Jennifer Fox, and Michel Litvak and David Lancaster of Bold Films.
In the film, Gyllenhaal will play "a small-time Los Angeles criminal who gets a little too swept up in the nocturnal world of the city's crime journalism community."
As mentioned earlier, Gyllenhaal will next be seen in Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners, alongside Hugh Jackman.
Into the Woods is scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2014 with or without Gyllenhaal--the film's stars Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep should be fine.

Non so! Mumble mumble...
Mancano all'appello Cappuccetto Rosso e Jack, ecco il cast principale rivelato esclusivamente su http://broadwayworld.com/article/WORLD-EXCLUSIVE-Confirmed-Casting-For-INTO-THE-WOODS-Movie-Starring-Streep-Depp-20130723
L'originale possiamo sempre vedercelo in Home video.

Vedremo a chi capiterà l'arduo compito. Chissà se tradurranno anche il titolo...!
Salvate Into The Woods dall'incapacità totale di Lorena Brancucci! Lasciate Into The Woods in originale al limite.
Restate in attesa...

Why Is Hollywood Obsessed With This Pencil?
The film, currently shooting in studio and on location throughout England, is directed by Rob Marshall and features a star-studded cast that includes Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine and Johnny Depp.
PHOTOS: Broadway Musicals That Have Sung Their Way to the Big Screen
Into the Woods is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, combining the tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel with an original story involving a baker and his wife.
Along with Sondheim's new song, the film will feature music from the stage musical, including "Children Will Listen," "Giants in the Sky," "On the Steps of the Palace," "No One Is Alone" and "Agony," among others. (Sondheim had previously told THR he would be working on new material for the film.)
Produced by Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt and Callum McDougall, Into the Woods is slated for a Dec. 25, 2014, theatrical release.
Below find Disney's complete breakdown of the star-studded cast and the characters each will play. While many were previously announced, new additions to the cast include Lilla Crawford, who will make her feature film debut as Little Red Riding Hood.
Supporting cast includes Tammy Blanchard and Lucy Punch as Cinderella's spoiled stepsisters, Florinda and Lucinda. Richard Glover will play the Princes' royal steward; Frances de la Tour portrays the giant; and Simon Russell Beale is the Baker's father. Joanna Riding plays Cinderella's late mother, and Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother is played by Annette Crosbie.
Meryl Streep portrays the Witch who wishes to reverse a curse so that her beauty may be restored.
Emily Blunt is the Baker's Wife, a childless woman who longs to be a mother.
James Corden plays the role of the Baker, a hard-working man who desperately wants to start a family.
Anna Kendrick plays Cinderella, who finds herself on a journey of self-discovery.
Chris Pine portrays Cinderella's Prince, charming and impossibly handsome, who is on an endless quest to find his bride.
Johnny Depp will play the wolf, who sets his sights on Little Red Riding Hood.
Lilla Crawford will play Little Red Riding Hood, a smart and spunky girl who journeys into the woods, finding unexpected adventures along the way.
Daniel Huttlestone lands the role of Jack, an absentminded and adventurous boy who trades his treasured cow for five magic beans.
Tracey Ullman joins the cast as Jack's Mother, a poor and exasperated mom who is overwhelmed, yet fiercely protective of her son.
Christine Baranski takes on the infamous Stepmother who wishes for riches and grandeur; she'll do anything to marry off one of her daughters to a prince.
MacKenzie Mauzy plays Rapunzel, a sheltered young woman who experiences the world beyond her tower for the first time.
Billy Magnussen is the dashing and eager Prince who courts Rapunzel.

Io trovo Cenerentola molto graziosa
Grazie Day, queste foto sono fantastiche!
Prima immagine ufficiale: Indovinate chi è??
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=109472

Non so se ascoltare qualcosa o no....
Sondheim Reveals Plot Changes for Disney Into the Woods Film
In a recent story in The New Yorker, Stephen Sondheim revealed several plot changes for the upcoming Disney film adaptation of his Tony Award-winning musical Into the Woods, which will arrive in theatres Dec. 25.
Sondheim spoke about the changes in the film during an event at Sardi's in which the composer-lyricist met with a group of high school theatre teachers to discuss the challenges they faced when it came to artistic censorship in an educational setting.
Kevin Gallagher, a teacher who is considering a production of Into the Woods at his school, brought up concerns over the nature of the relationship between Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf. "So, what is the objection?" Sondheim asked.
"Infidelity, a wolf being lascivious, that the whole connection with Red Riding Hood is sexual," Gallagher replied. "Well, you'll be happy to know that Disney had the same objections," Sondheim said.
Sondheim continued, "You will find in the movie that Rapunzel does not get killed, and the prince does not sleep with the [Baker's Wife]." He added, "You know, if I were a Disney executive I probably would say the same thing."
Another teacher asked if the song "Any Moment," which bookends the encounter between Cinderella's Prince and the Baker's Wife, had been cut. "The song is cut," Sondheim stated. Following outcry from the teachers, Sondheim added, "I'm sorry, I should say, it's probably cut."
When pressed that he should have stuck up for the inclusion of the song, Sondheim said that he and Into the Woods' Tony Award-winning book writer James Lapine did so. "But Disney said, we don't want Rapunzel to die, so we replotted it. I won't tell you what happens, but we wrote a new song to cover it," he said.
Beacon high school teacher Jo Ann Cimato, who has staged school productions of Spring Awakening, Passing Strange, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot and The Light in the Piazza with teen actors, said that her students felt angry and mistrusted when they read the un-edited scripts of certain productions after they were forced to make alterations for their own school production.
Sondheim replied that the students were right to feel that way, adding, "But you have to explain to them that censorship is part of our puritanical ethics, and it's something that they're going to have to deal with. There has to be a point at which you don't compromise anymore, but that may mean that you won't get anyone to sell your painting or perform your musical. You have to deal with reality."
*
As previously reported, the film of Into the Woods will also feature the new song "Rainbows" and a new song written for Meryl Streep, who portrays The Witch.
Rob Marshall ("Chicago," Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides") directs the film, based on the Tony-winning original musical by Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and Sondheim, who provides music and lyrics.
The cast includes Emily Blunt ("Looper," "The Young Victoria," "The Devil Wears Prada") as the Baker's Wife, James Corden (One Man, Two Guvnors) as the Baker, Anna Kendrick ("Pitch Perfect," "Up in the Air") as Cinderella, Chris Pine ("Star Trek Into Darkness," "Jack Ryan") as Cinderella's Prince, Johnny Depp ("Pirates of the Caribbean," "The Lone Ranger," "Sweeney Todd") as the Wolf, Daniel Huttlestone ("Les Misérables") as Jack, Lilla Crawford (Annie) as Little Red, Tracey Ullman as Jack’s Mother, Christine Baranski ("Mamma Mia!," "The Good Wife") as the Stepmother, MacKenzie Mauzy (Next to Normal) as Rapunzel and Billy Magnussen (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike) as Rapunzel's Prince.
Rounding out the cast are Tammy Blanchard (How to Succeed…) and Lucy Punch ("Bad Teacher," "Dinner for Schmucks") as Cinderella's stepsisters, Florinda and Lucinda, respectively; Richard Glover ("Sightseers," "St. Trinian's") as the Steward; Frances de la Tour ("Hugo," "Alice In Wonderland") as the Giant; Simon Russell Beale ("The Deep Blue Sea") as the Baker's father; Joanna Riding ("My Fair Lady") as Cinderella's mother; and Annette Crosbie ("Calendar Girls," "The Slipper and the Rose") as Little Red Riding Hood's granny.
"Into the Woods," according to press notes, "is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them."
The big-screen adaptation welcomes songs from the stage musical, including "Children Will Listen," "Giants in the Sky," "On the Steps of the Palace," "No One Is Alone" and "Agony," among others.
The production team includes Dion Beebe as director of photography, Dennis Gassner as production designer and Colleen Atwood as costume designer.
Into the Woods premiered on Broadway Nov. 5, 1987, at the Martin Beck Theatre. The production, which ran for 764 performances, won Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book and Best Actress in a Musical.

Striking First Look at ‘Into the Woods’
One of the most anticipated films of this fall is Disney’s big screen adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods. With a massive fanbase and all-star cast, the musical is sure to be a hit. But one of the big questions is how the film will look when moved from stage to screen.
While a beloved taped version of the Broadway play exists, this is the first time the musical has been given a cinematic treatment; after a long period of development. Based on the first look key art, the production design of this retelling of classic fairytales looks promising.
Directed by Oscar winner Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine) Into the Woods stars big names Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Tracey Ullman, Christine Baranski, and Billy Magnussen. But the two biggest names in the film might be hard to recognize; Meryl Streep as the Witch and Johnny Depp as the Wolf, who is barely visible in this first look, seen in the last two stills.
Into the Woods is in UK cinemas from January 9th 2015 after a Christmas Day opening in the US.

Mamma mia che bellissimo trailer *__*
Davvero bello il trailer! Cresce tantissimo la curiosità
Sottotitolato in italiano http://www.badtaste.it/2014/07/31/into-the-woods-teaser-trailer-italiano/90266/
Maledetti!!! XD
Meryl Streep, MacKenzie Mauzy in una nuova foto di Into the Woods
badtaste
http://www.badtaste.it/2014/08/22/meryl-streep-mackenzie-mauzy-in-nuova-foto-into-the-woods/92450/
Per me in Italia resterà col titolo originale.
Ops! Errore mio!
Into the Woods: la Disney non cambierà i nomi dei personaggi
Piccola polemica, subito rientrata, sul nuovo film della Walt Disney Pictures titolato Into the Woods.

Pasqua. Afferrano quel periodo.
Non so davvero cosa pensare.

Ora me lo scarico in 1080p e me lo gusto in tv.

Into the Woods – Un video sulla strega cattiva Meryl Streep, e la si sente cantare “Stay with Me”

“Potrebbe essere definita una interpretazione più dark di Into the Woods. Chris Pine e Anna Kendrick bravissimi. E la Streep. Ovviamente [...] [...] A teatro Into the Woods è divertentissimo. – Sasha Stone, Awards Daily
“Into the Woods è il musical cinematografico più sorprendente sin da Chicago, diretto sempre da Marshall e vincitore dell’Oscar. Sublime Sondheim. Un vero vincitore.” – Pete Hammond, Deadline Hollwyood
“Into the Woods ha compiuto la transizione sullo schermo intatto e ricco di vita. Un vero piacere, intelligente e con cuore.” – Gregg Kilday, The Hollywood Reporter
“Depp è ottimo in versione ridotta come Lupo.
