RUMOR: ‘Thunderbolts’ Movie Green-Lit At Marvel, Will Begin Production In 2023

For a while, it’s been suspected that a Thunderbolts project was in development in some form over at Marvel Studios.

Thanks to a new report from The GWW , it seems as if the project is finally coming to fruition and that it is expected to be a feature length film.

According to the site, several of its sources close to the studio have revealed that a movie adaptation featuring the team of reluctant heroes will commence production in 2023, alongside several other confirmed and unconfirmed projects such as Fantastic Four and (apparently) Nova.

With so many of the studios already announced projects either in production or beginning production soon – and with several additional mystery projects announced – we are just about due for an updated Marvel Studios slate. So it certainly makes sense that there would be a slew of new series and films ramping up to begin production in 2023.

As always though, because this is an unconfirmed report, we urge you to take it with a grain of salt – at least until there’s confirmation from a major trade or the studio itself.

For those unfamiliar with the Thunderbolts, it would be fair to say that they are Marvel’s equivalent to The Suicide Squad; however, they don’t have bombs in their necks forcing them to save the world against their will. Instead, they are recruited by General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross.

Ross is currently played by William Hurt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and was last seen in Black Widow in frail condition. Might that have been a subtle sign that he’s in need of a genetic upgrade? In the comics he does become the Red Hulk subjecting himself to a variant of the Super Soldier Program.

In the past, the Thunderbolts have consisted of Baron Zemo, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster and even Venom – all of which currently exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Additionally, Deadpool, Luke Cage, and even Ghost Rider have served on the team at some point.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Yelena Belova Will Reportedly Lead The ‘Thunderbolts’ Film

According to DEADLINE’s Justin Kroll on a recent episode of Matthew Belloni’s Podcast, he revealed that Florence Pugh is set to lead the Thunderbolts project.

Kroll: “[Pugh] has got the Marvel superhero that’s already got a spin-off. Upcoming for her, actually, on that character is this Thunderbolts film, which is basically Marvel’s Suicide Squad. Hopefully, it has better results. But the concept is it’d be her leading the team of like Wyatt Russell’s [John Walker], Daniel Bruhl’s [Zemo], those anti-heroes that aren’t exactly good but aren’t exactly bad. So there’s that. And people seem to like the Yelena character.”

While no other details were confirmed about the project, it was revealed that the film will end act as the conclusion of the studio’s upcoming fifth Phase. The Phase kicks off in February with the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

While not listed, it’s worth noting that Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, and even Jameela Jamil’s Titania are also eligible antiheroes that could appear. And we cannot wait for Marvel to announce an official roster for what many are saying could be the Studio’s very own version of The Suicide Squad (notice the “The” in front).

Thunderbolts has been quietly in the development process for quite some time. Director Jake Schreier reportedly blew away execs and ultimately landed him the job. Not much is known about the plot of the film other than it revolves around a group of supervillains (or at least characters who have played bad guys at one point in MCU). Marvel has been in touch with certain individuals who are already part of the MCU to make sure to keep an opening in their schedules for next summer when it shoots.

Sadly, William Hurt, who played Marvel Cinematic Universe, passed away in May. So, a recast may be coming. The character was last seen in Black Widow in frail condition, leading people to believe he could become Red Hulk by subjecting himself to a variant of the Super Soldier Program.

In the comics, the Thunderbolts have consisted of Baron Zemo, U.S. Agent, the Winter Soldier, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster, and Abomination, all of which currently exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Additionally, Deadpool, Luke Cage, and even Ghost Rider have served on the team at some point.

Marvel Pushes Pause On ‘Thunderbolts’ Production Due To Writers Strike

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios is delaying filming on another upcoming production as Deadline has learned that the studios’ Thunderbolts pic has pushed pause on the upcoming production, which was set to start shooting in three weeks in Atlanta. The crew was notified today and insiders say that the plan is to resume production once the strike has ended.

The move comes after Marvel had also pushed paused on pre-production for its Blade pic, which was expected to shoot in June as well. The studio had also been forced to recently halt production on its TV series Wonder Man, which had been shooting in Los Angeles and had stopped production in recent days. Like Thunderbolts, the plan is to resume production on Wonder Man once strike is over.

While TV has seen more shutdowns since the strike started earlier this month, the film side has seen less productions halts and postponements but longer it goes on, we shall see if more studios choose to hold off on shooting and push productions until the strike has been settled. Last week, the Lionsgate pic Good Fortune decided to stop filming indefinitely because of the strike.
