Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Pic Finds Its Director In ‘Dear White People’ Helmer Justin Simien

EXCLUSIVE: Disney’s latest film revolving around its iconic Haunted Mansion theme park attraction is gaining more life as the studio is in negotiations Justin Simien to direct the new movie based on the ride. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the live-action hit Aladdin, are producing through their Rideback banner with Nick Reynolds of Rideback exec producing. Katie Dippold penned the most recent draft.

The Haunted Mansion ride debuted in 1969 and favorite of park goers since then with it appearing currently in both Disney Land and Disney World. The premise sees theme park guests go inside a spooky and creepy manor that includes some classic characters like the spirit of psychic medium Madame Leota to the skeletal Bride to the cloaked Hatbox Ghost.

Disney previously adapted the ride into a 2003 movie directed by Rob Minkoff and starring Eddie Murphy and was a moderate success at the box-office. Similar to Pirates of the Caribbean, another theme park ride that became a massive box-office smash, execs have always seen this as a piece of Disney IP that is recognizable to so many people across the world but also makes for something can be easier to adapt as a movie compared to other theme park rides.

Insiders say this will be a completely different take as a film that stands on its own. Disney has wanted to work with Simien for some time, with him meeting on several other projects before settling on this one following his recent pitch on how he envisioned the story going.

As for Simien, he has been a rising star among his peers following his critically acclaimed Sundance darling Dear White People, which he wrote, produced and directed. The film was so well received, Netflix would go on to adapt it into a TV series with Siemen serving as creator and exec producer. That show is currently in production in its fourth season.

He would follow that up with another huge Sundance hit Bad Hair, which Hulu moved quickly to acquire, with that bowing on the service last October. He is repped by CAA, Grandview and Gordon Bobb at Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka, Finkelstein & Lezcano.

Da The Disinsider

New Details Revealed for Upcoming ‘Haunted Mansion’ Film

Following the announcement that a new film based on the classic Haunted Mansion attraction was finally moving forward, new details on the production have just come to light.

According to The Illuminerdi, Disney is looking at Tiffany Haddish for a key role in the film. If cast, Haddish would play a character named Harriet, a psychic that is hired to speak with the spirits at the Haunted Mansion.

The Illuminerdi has also revealed some exclusive plot information. The plot will revolve around “Gabbie, a single mother, and her young son [who] recently purchased a New Orleans estate [the Haunted Mansion] at auction only to discover it isn’t quite as empty as they expected.”

“Gabbie hires a grieving widower who works as a ghost tour guide [Ben Matthias], a psychic [Harriet], a priest, and a local historian to exorcise the vengeful spirit from the Haunted Mansion.”

Disney is interested in LaKeith Standfield for the role of Ben Matthias, though nothing is confirmed as of yet.

Interestingly, nothing here indicates that any existing characters such as Master Gracey, Madame Leota, or the Hatbox Ghost will be appearing in the film. However, this could easily change.

This new take on The Haunted Mansion will be directed by Justin Simien (Bad Hair), with a script written by Katie Dippold (Ghostbusters). It will be produced through the Rideback production company by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirish (live-action Aladdin). Production is expected to begin this October in Atlanta, GA and is planned to be a theatrical release.

This version of the story will mark the second time the attraction makes its way to the big screen, following the 2003 film. Directed by Rob Minkoff (The Lion King), 2003’s The Haunted Mansion received negative reviews and has long remained all-but ignored by The Walt Disney Company.

This will also depart from the long-awaiting Guillermo Del Toro version, which was to be written and directed by the filmmaker, with a story centered on the Hatbox Ghost.

Da The Illuminerdi

[...]Harriet is one of the leads and described as a hapless psychic who is hired to speak with the spirits at the Haunted Mansion. Haunted Mansion is interested in Tiffany Haddish for this role and she seems like the perfect fit as this will undoubtedly give Haddish a chance to show off her comedy skills should she take the role.

Ben Matthias is one of the leads and is described as scruffy and unkempt. Ben was once an engineer working on a camera that could perceive paranormal activity, but after the death of his wife, his life fell to pieces. Now he’s an unenthusiastic ghost tour guide in the French Quarter of New Orleans who no longer believes in the paranormal.

Haunted Mansion has also shown interest in Lakeith Stanfield for this role, however it’s unknown if Stanfield has been approached or if he has shown mutual interest. Fans may know Stanfield for his roles in Knives Out and Judas And The Black Messiah, should he take the role as Ben Matthias he would not only get the chance to likely show off some comedy chops, but the complexities of a recent widower whose life crumbled after the loss of his wife who must also wrestle with the reality of ghosts.

It looks like the film will be centered around original characters, but there are plenty of chances to incorporate the long standing lore from the beloved attraction into the story. It will be exciting for Disney fans to see how the ride is incorporated into this new film and how the story expands beyond the attraction.
Disney is leaning heavily into expanding their classic rides into fully fledged properties through film and television. The newest, Jungle Cruise is set to hit theaters and Disney Plus with Premier Access this Friday, July 30.

Collider previously reported that Scarlett Johansson will produce and star in a new Tower of Terror film based on the Disney attraction. Pirates of the Caribbean is the most successful example of building a franchise around a Disney attraction with 5 films that have earned over $4.5 billion worldwide.

There are currently two different Pirates Of The Caribbean films in development, one from Ted Elliot, who co-wrote the first four films, and Craig Mazin and the other will star Margot Robbie with Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson taking on the script. On the streaming side Battlestar Galactica creator Ron Moore is creating a Magic Kingdom universe for Disney Plus with the first project already announced, The Society of Explorers and Adventurers.

The new Haunted Mansion film is written by Katie Dippold (Parks & Recreation, Ghostbusters) and will be directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People, Bad Hair). Justin Simien is no stranger to Disney having already signed on to serve as creator, executive producer, and writer on the highly anticipated Lando Disney Plus Star Wars series. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirish who produced the 2019 live-action Aladdin, which grossed over $1 billion, will produce the new Haunted Mansion film through their Rideback production company. The film is scheduled to begin production this October in Atlanta, GA.

Da The Hollywood Reporter

Owen Wilson to Star in Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ (Exclusive)

LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish are already on the call sheet.

Owen Wilson has joined the cast of Haunted Mansion, Disney’s family adventure spookfest based on one of the company’s signature theme park rides.

Wilson joins LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish in a roll call for a production that is described as an ensemble in nature.

Justin Simien, who previously helmed Dear White People and Bad Hair, is making his big-budget studio debut by directing the feature project from a script by Katie Dippold. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced Disney’s billion-dollar-grossing live-action remake of Aladdin, are producing via their Rideback banner.

Story details are being kept in the dark, but it is known that ostensibly the film will follow a family that moves into the titular mansion. However, it is the characters around that nucleus that will have a big portion of the moonlight shining on them.

The project begins shooting in Atlanta in October. It is the latest to be based on one of the company’s classic rides and comes in the wake of the studio releasing Jungle Cruise, also inspired by a theme park attraction. The latter has grossed over $106 million at the domestic box office even as it streams on Disney+.

Rideback’s Nick Reynolds will exec produce Mansion.

Wilson became a fan-favorite when he played Mobius, a middle manager who works with Tom Hiddleston’s lord of mischief in Marvel’s Loki, the series that unspooled in June and July on Disney+.

The comedic actor also will be seen in this fall’s The French Dispatch, the latest film from frequent collaborator Wes Anderson, and recently wrapped shooting the romantic comedy Marry Me opposite Jennifer Lopez.

He is repped by UTA and Hirsch Wallerstein.

E dopo Owen Wilson ecco Rosario Dawson nel cast.

Da Deadline

Rosario Dawson Books A Room In Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Movie

EXCLUSIVE: Rosario Dawson has been set to join LaKeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish in Haunted Mansion, Disney’s latest live-action film based on one of its theme park attractions. Justin Simien is directing a script from Katie Dippold, and the pic, which also recently added Owen Wilson to the cast, is now gearing up to begin shooting next month.

The plot is under wraps and comes after Disney’s 2003 moderately successful movie based on the Disneyland and Walt Disney World attraction that starred Eddie Murphy. That came the same year as another Disney theme park ride-turned-movie arrived: that would be Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, which spawned four sequels and grossed more than $4.5 billion at the global box office.

Most recently, Disney took another ride adapting Jungle Cruise, with the Dwayne Johnson-Emily Blunt action adventure movie finally hitting big screens at the end of July, grossing $194M worldwide to date in theaters (it also bowed on Disney PVOD) and finishing fourth overall among the top domestic summer releases. A sequel is already in the works.

The Haunted Mansion attraction debuted in 1969 at Disneyland. Guests take a slow ride inside a spooky and creepy manor that includes the spirit of psychic medium Madame Leota, the skeletal Bride and the cloaked Hatbox Ghost.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced Disney’s live-action hit Aladdin, are producing Haunted Mansion via their Rideback banner, with Rideback’s Nick Reynolds executive producing.

Dawson, who starred on USA Network’s Briarpatch and played Jedi Ahsoka Tano on Disney+’s The Mandalorian, most recently was on the big screen in David Oyelowo’s The Water Man and is up next in the Hulu limited series Dopesick which bows October 13.

She’s repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

Altro cast di peso.

Da The Hollywood Reporter

Danny DeVito Joins LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson in ‘Haunted Mansion’ (Exclusive)

Justin Simien, who previously helmed 'Dear White People' and 'Bad Hair', is making his big-budget studio debut, which began production last week in New Orleans and Atlanta.

Danny DeVito has joined the luminous cast of Haunted Mansion, Disney’s ghostly family adventure based on one of the company’s signature theme park rides.

DeVito, whose last big-screen studio appearance was in 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level, boards a project that already has LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson on the call sheet.

Justin Simien, who previously helmed Dear White People and Bad Hair, is making his big-budget studio debut on Mansion, which began production last week in New Orleans and Atlanta.

The details of the story and script by Katie Dippold are being kept deep in the bayou. The film follows a mother and her son who come across a mansion that is more than it seems while being orbited by various characters key to undressing the spooky mystery.

DeVito will play a smug professor.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced Disney’s billion-dollar-grossing live-action remake of Aladdin, are producing via their Rideback banner. Rideback’s Nick Reynolds is executive producing.

DeVito is a veteran comedic actor whose more than 100 credits range from seminal 1970s TV series Taxi to major movies such as Romancing the Stone and Batman Returns, and appearing, for over the last 15 years, in long-running comedy, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

He is due to reteam with helmer Ivan Reitman and star Arnold Schwarzenegger for Triplets, a sequel to 1988 comedy hit, Twins. The decades-long gestating project, which has yet to land a distributor, is gearing up for a winter production start, with Tracy Morgan added to the mix.

DeVito is repped by CAA.

Rumors! Pare che Jared Leto interpreterà il Fantasma della Cappelliera, mentre Jamie Lee Curtis Madame Leota!

Da The Disinsider

Jared Leto Reportedly Joins Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’

Yesterday, reports surfaced that Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis would be playing Madame Leota in the upcoming Haunted Mansion remake. Now, a new actor has been revealed for another iconic role.

According to One Take News, Morbius star Jared Leto has joined the all-star cast that also includes Tiffany Haddish, LaKeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, and Danny DeVito.

The Haunted Mansion follows a doctor (Dawson) and her 9-year-old son (Dillon), who are looking to start a new life, move into a strangely affordable mansion in New Orleans, only to discover that the place is much more than they bargained for. Desperate for help, they contact a priest (Wilson), who, in turn, enlists the aid of a widowed scientist-turned failed-paranormal expert (Stanfield), a French Quarter psychic (Haddish), and a crotchety historian (DeVito).

Jared Leto will play the iconic Disneyland animatronic The Hatbox Ghost.

The Hatbox Ghost is a particularly infamous and iconic spectre among the 999 ghosts of the Haunted Mansion. Haunting the attic alongside the Bride (later Constance), he is remarkable mainly for his legacy of being the “lost ghost” of the attraction, originally appearing briefly when the mansion opened 1969, but sadly the technology to make his effect work was not there yet and then the animatronic suddenly vanished without a trace. On May 9, 2015, however, the character was reintroduced to the mansion at Disneyland.

Simien, who was previously announced to be working on a Lando Calrissian solo series for Disney+, and directed the critically acclaimed series Dear White People is directing. Kris Bowers, who scored King Richard, has been tasked with composing the iconic music from the attraction to the film.

Haunted Mansion is slated to spook up audiences in theaters on March 10, 2023. We should expect our first look at the film, with a possible trailer, this September during Disney’s bi-annual D23 Expo this September in Anaheim, California.

Jamie Lee Curtis Reportedly Playing Madame Leota in Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’

Disney’s upcoming Haunted Mansion remake is in post-production and while the film has a stacked cast led by Tiffany Haddish and LaKeith Stanfield, there is still many secrets to be told.

According to One Take News, Halloween horror icon Jamie Lee Curtis is set to play the infamous gypsy of the mansion Madame Leota. Jamie Lee Curtis’ name is something I heard earlier this year but could never confirm, today’s report now confirms that.

Originally conceived as a character to be featured in Disneyland’s version of the attraction, Leota’s character has been expanded, to be featured in multiple Disney attractions. She was originally portrayed by Leota Toombs (whom she was named after). Although the majority of Leota’s origins remain a mystery, what is known about her past varies from park to park.[...]

The Haunted Mansion is ready to open its doors. First announced and shown at D23, a special look at Haunted Mansion during the Disney Content Showcase reveals a star-studded cast including Rosario Dawson as. a mother who moves her family into a haunted mansion, Owen Wilson as a sarcastic priest, Danny DeVito as a local professor and LaKeith Stanfield as a paranormal investigator. The special look had a lot of looks of the mansion, the ghosts that haunt it and the scares viewers can expect and look forward to.

Haunted Mansion premieres August 2023.

Dal sito Pedestrian.tv:

Haunted Mansion

There was also the first-ever trailer for Haunted Mansion, featuring an absolutely stacked cast.

There’s Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, Danny DeVito, Jared Leto, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chase Dillon, Winona Ryder, Dan Levy and Hasan Minhaj.

It’s the latest in a long list of movies based on classic Disney attractions, joining Mission to Mars, The Country Bears, Tomorrowland, last year’s hit flick Jungle Cruise, and, of course, Pirates of the Caribbean.

The trailer is equal parts spooky as fuck and utterly hilarious and I promise you’re gonna love it.

The movie is set to drop on August 10, 2023 and the trailer is expected in the not-too-distant future.
