'MULAN' RELEASE DATE: WHEN WILL 'MULAN' COME TO DISNEY PLUS AFTER CINEMA RELEASE DELAY?

Mulan was one of the first movies affected by coronavirus, with the film's March 27 release date delayed due to the closure of cinemas in China—a key market for the live-action remake. After a number of studios have put their movies online rather than release them in theaters, a lot of fans of the 1998 animated film were hoping it would skip its cinema release and come straight to Disney+. However, there are several hints as to why that will not be the case.

When will Mulan come to Disney+?

Although Disney is about to put the recently released animated movie Onward onto Disney+, viewers should not expect them to do the same with Mulan. Onward had the misfortune of being released just before thousands of cinemas closed across the world, so putting the movie onto Disney+ was mostly seen as a way of Disney cutting their losses on a film that they had already put out.

By delaying Mulan, however, the studio has shown that they are willing to wait until the coronavirus crisis is over before releasing the movie, in order to make as much money on a movie believed to have cost at least $300 million. This makes it the most expensive of the live-action remakes so far.

'Mulan' is not expected to come to Disney+ any time soon

Although putting Mulan onto Disney+ would certainly bring subscribers to the streaming service, it is unlikely to result in anything like the revenue Disney has made from previous live-action films. Three of the recent live-action remakes (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King) have made over a billion dollars, while even relative box office failures like Dumbo more than doubled their budget.

To make a billion dollars on Mulan, the movie would have to bring in at least 140 million new subscribers paying $7 each—that is over four times as many subscribers as the 28.6 million the service had in total as of February 2020.

One of the most important roles on a film of this scale (or any film really) is the Production Designer. Grant Major and I had worked together a number of times before and I really value his eye, his taste, his huge vision, and his gentle manner. Under his direction a team of concept artists started to show us what our big set pieces could look like. These images were created three years ago. A desert garrison and thriving marketplace on the Silk Road that is the location for our first big action sequence. Once again, it amazes me how faithful we kept to the original vision. Three years later you can see the real shots in the trailer.

Sempre dalla pagina Instagram di Niki Caro:

One of the best things about making this movie were the location scouts to remote places. This is a single day in two different deserts searching for the right location for the desert garrison sequence (see concept art in previous post). NB the outstanding footwear which keeps the sand out of your shoes. In between deserts I managed to do a Skype session with a high school class from New Zealand. They were studying ‘McFarland USA’, a film I made for Disney about a Mexican American high school cross country team. At the time I found it strange and amazing to be northwest China talking to New Zealand school kids about Mexican American field workers in California... Now I think that’s kind of normal.

A critical piece of casting was finding Mulan’s horse, Black Wind. We were very much guided by the animation for the look, and determined to find the most beautiful horse. This is the undeniably beautiful Dazzle who turned out to be not a very nice horse, actually. I vastly preferred Bobby, the other horse who played Black Wind, who was less glamorous but a lot kinder. Interestingly, horses cannot be alone on set. They need another horse there to reassure them. So whenever we were working with Dazzle, Bobby was off to the side, being reassuring. A prince of a horse in my opinion.

Su Mulan:

It’s hard to overestimate how important costume design is on a movie of this scale and scope. Costume designer Bina Daigeler began with Mulan’s most critical costume. This costume needed to disguise Mulan as a man, but then reveal her as a woman. It needed to take her to war, (armour) but also move with her through martial arts based action choreography. Bina approached the design with her trademark intuition and logic, and her abundant artistry and creativity. The shots of Mulan fighting are some of my favorites in the movie. I see a fearless warrior, but I also see a real woman. I love how Bina’s design reveals the strong, female body. I love how it moves with Yifei - how it’s both tough and flexible. I think Bina created something genuinely iconic, and one of my most cherished dreams is one day seeing a whole tribe of little warrior Mulans on Halloween...

Dalla Pagina Instagram di Niki Caro:

My first 3 months on Mulan were all about articulating the vision for the movie in a presentation for the studio. These presentations usually involve images on the walls of a room, but I wanted the studio’s first look to reflect the epic scale of the movie to come. I wanted it to be experiential, so we blacked out a huge space, as if entering a museum exhibit. This is the first room. Concept art was presented in parallax on huge screens, following the journey of the story...

Sempre dalla regista:

Rooms 2 + 3 of the Mulan Presentation. Early costume exploration, a maquette of Mulan and Black Wind, and a model of what would become our largest set, a 360 degree interior and partial exterior of Mulan’s village.

Nuovo messaggio:

Throwback Tuesday to three years ago when I gave this presentation to the creative team at Disney. They liked it a lot and I was asked to do it again (and then again) for different divisions of the company. Eventually they took pity on me and filmed it so I didn’t have to keep doing it in person. This is just the opening, but I went through the entire story. Took about 30 mins.

Ulteriori notizie:

As critical as it is to be able to communicate a director’s vision verbally, it is way more powerful to be able to do it visually. The final part of the presentation was a 10 minute pre-viz of the biggest action sequence in the movie. I knew the studio had questions about how I would handle the epic action sequences. I’d not had the opportunity to work with pre-viz before this, so I seized it. It’s great for trying out different camera moves, action, lenses etc, but I felt that with a little help, it could also convey emotion. I enlisted editor David Coulson, and music editor Robin Whittaker to work their magic on the pre-vized shots. I was so happy with the result. It felt like I was not just seeing, but feeling the movie for the first time. You can see some of these identical shots in the trailer.

Ancora:

I was blessed and honored to have Bill Kong on our team. He is the genius producer behind the brilliant, inspiring ‘Hero’, ‘House of Flying Daggers’, and the original ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’, and he joined us on Mulan to offer cultural and creative guidance. In our very first conversation he reminded me that I am not Chinese, and should not try to make a Chinese movie. He told me that countless Chinese movies have been made of the Mulan story, but none yet had been made by Disney in live action. He encouraged me to honor the Disney culture as well as honoring the Chinese culture. Looking back, I see this was my first lesson in ‘Loyal, Brave, and True’. I would need to be loyal to the Disney audience, and to the 1998 animation, brave enough to follow my instincts and take the live action version into new territory, and true to the rich history of Chinese culture and the spirit of Mulan. Thank you Bill.

E infine:

As inspiring as the great Wuxia movies are, we needed to find our own visual + physical language for Mulan. Here is our earliest test, on the Phantom flex camera (shot at 500 fps and adjusted to 300fps). We were starting to think about how to articulate the idea of ‘chi’. This test taught me a lot. I knew immediately that super slow motion and digital fx were going to be the wrong kind of language for this character. Mulan is not a super hero. She is not ‘magical’. Her power comes from her integrity, her intelligence, her love for her family, and her connection to her own chi. I realized that we would need to express this power more naturally through brilliant but grounded martial arts choreography, lenses that gave us a more subtle chromatic aberration, and an actress who could deliver both physical and emotional power. For all the technological brilliance at our disposal, we were going to pursue old school movie making techniques - in camera, on the ground, with real people expressing real emotion.

Click

Finding the right actress to play Mulan was the single most important decision we needed to make, so we cast the net wide. It was a global search, open to anyone who wanted to audition. Here are just a few of the thousands who went on tape for us. I was so moved by their love for the character, their sincerity, and excitement. I hope everyone who tried out for Mulan knows that their passion is woven into the fabric of our movie, and that that all played a part in helping me understand and appreciate how beloved and important Mulan is to so many.

Click

A short clip from Yifei’s first audition scene. Also the first day I met her. She had traveled from Beijing the day before, and had not slept due to the punishing jet lag between China and US time zones. We needed to see her do four scenes, one of which had five pages of dialogue. All in her second language. The audition took 2 hours, and then she went for a physical training session for another 90 mins. She was deeply exhausted, but never asked for a break, was totally focused, committed, and consistently brilliant. I saw the depth of her talent, her physical strength, her artistry and her undeniable spirit. I knew I’d found a partner, a collaborator, and a warrior. We loved her so much we delayed the shoot 6 months to wait for her to become available. Best decision we ever made.

Click

I love that so many of you are interested in the audition process, so here’s a special one. It was very early in our search, before we even had a screenplay. This is a scene specifically written for the Mulan auditions by writers Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. I love how the words pretty much articulate the auditioning process ‘I just need one person to believe in me and that person is you’. We believed so strongly in Xana that we offered her the role of Mulan’s sister Xiu. You are going to LOVE her in this movie, I promise.

Dal sito DeadLine:

Disney Won’t Be Able To “Jam People” On Prices At Parks, May “Kill” ‘Mulan’ Theatrical As Digital Boost – Analyst

Disney is starting to recover from COVID-19, but it won’t be able to “jam people on pricing” at its theme parks anytime soon, hurting revenue, and may opt to “kill” the theatrical run of Mulan, according to Wall Street analyst Michael Nathanson.

The MoffettNathanson partner joined colleagues Craig Moffett and Nick Del Deo for a conference call about the pandemic’s impact on media, telecom and tech companies. A replay of the call was released Friday.

Mulan, a big-budget, live-action remake of Disney’s animated film, is a looming issue for the company, which took in $13 billion in global box office in 2019. If the film collects even 50% of the $1 billion many recent Disney tentpoles have, “it will be a freakin’ home run,” Nathanson said.

A longtime Disney bull, Nathanson recently downgraded its shares due to the pandemic, which has hit parks, theatrical films, production, TV advertising and ESPN, which has lacked live sports programming.

Currently slated for a theatrical debut on July 24, Mulan depends on a majority of theaters being open and moviegoers feeling reassured about buying tickets. Top circuits AMC and Cinemark hope to reopen in about a month and are eyeing the planned release of Tenet on July 17 as the kickoff to their pandemic-altered summer season. San Francisco is the latest major-market question mark, joining Chicago, New York and LA given government action and the state of the virus there. Many overseas territories are seeing significant openings, even in once-hobbled countries like Italy and Spain.

Exhibitors and Disney alike have held firm that they are moving forward with the July plan, but Nathanson isn’t sure the studio will follow through. Beyond the viability of theaters, he said, the company would have to “un-furlough a lot of their employees” in distribution and marketing. “I don’t think it’s a given that Mulan‘s going to be released as we think.”

Having already been postponed from a planned release in March, and with other titles pushed out of 2020 and into 2021, Mulan could go out via premium video on demand. It could then accelerate its release to Disney+ by Labor Day, Nathanson speculated. He referenced Trolls World Tour, the Universal release that skipped theaters this spring but still yielded a decent return for the studio given its marketing spend, fast-food tie-ins and higher profile as a family-friendly sequel. The economics of a bigger movie like Mulan are different, of course, but Nathanson’s main point was that there is a recent major-studio PVOD precedent.

Also, Disney has other considerations. A streaming-focused release “could give Disney a bit of a boost and limit churn” on Disney+, Nathanson said.

In terms of share price, “the story about Disney+ and Hulu has given the stock a bit of support,” Nathanson said. “If they do kill Mulan, that could help the narrative. In a perverse way, that could be better for Disney stock in a long run than having Mulan go to theaters.”

As far as the parks unit, Nathanson said the firm’s financial models assume that they will operate at 25% of their usual capacity for the rest of 2020, as is currently the case in Shanghai. In 2021, the estimate moves up to 50% and then to 75% in 2022.

“Until you have a vaccine, you’re going to have the parks run very cautiously,” the analyst said. The gloomy economic outlook, especially in terms of unemployment and consumer spending, means the dynamic at the theme parks will be dramatically different over the next three years. “Disney had really been able to use flex pricing and act like Uber and jam people on pricing and raise prices when demand was spiking,” Nathanson said.

Flex Passes, an offering introduced last year that has provided more consistent parks revenue, have not been allowed in Shanghai, Nathanson noted. Individual tickets and reservations have to be made.

Moffett, who covers Comcast, said similar questions are confronting the owner of Universal theme parks. “Are people going to be willing to go back to the parks or not?” he said. “Some will and some won’t.”

Admissions tell only part of the story, Nathanson said. The real question is about what prices customers are charged and how much they are spending on lodging, merchandise and food during their visits. The usual full-tilt Disney consumer pitch in parks has had to be dialed back several notches. “Pricing is a key lever here and it takes a while to come back,” he said.
