In "The Marvelous Land of Oz," the Scarecrow says "I am told he took (the throne) from Pastoria, the former King."

But in "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz," Ozma and the Wizard talk about the history of Oz which suggests that this wasn't the case.

"One day my balloon ran away with me and brought me across the deserts
to this beautiful country. When the people saw me come from the sky
they naturally thought me some superior creature, and bowed down
before me. I told them I was a Wizard, and showed them some easy
tricks that amazed them; and when they saw the initials painted on the
balloon they called me Oz."

"Now I begin to understand," said the Princess, smiling.

"At that time," continued the Wizard, busily eating his soup while
talking, "there were four separate countries in this Land, each one of
the four being ruled by a Witch. But the people thought my power was
greater than that of the Witches; and perhaps the Witches thought so
too, for they never dared oppose me. I ordered the Emerald City to be
built just where the four countries cornered together, and when it was
completed I announced myself the Ruler of the Land of Oz, which
included all the four countries of the Munchkins, the Gillikins, the
Winkies and the Quadlings. Over this Land I ruled in peace for many
years, until I grew old and longed to see my native city once again.
So when Dorothy was first blown to this place by a cyclone I arranged
to go away with her in a balloon; but the balloon escaped too soon and
carried me back alone. After many adventures I reached Omaha, only to
find that all my old friends were dead or had moved away. So, having
nothing else to do, I joined a circus again, and made my balloon
ascensions until the earthquake caught me."

"That is quite a history," said Ozma; "but there is a little more
history about the Land of Oz that you do not seem to
understand--perhaps for the reason that no one ever told it you. Many
years before you came here this Land was united under one Ruler, as it
is now, and the Ruler's name was always 'Oz,' which means in our
language 'Great and Good'; or, if the Ruler happened to be a woman,
her name was always 'Ozma.' But once upon a time four Witches leagued
together to depose the king and rule the four parts of the kingdom
themselves; so when the Ruler, my grandfather, was hunting one day, one
Wicked Witch named Mombi stole him and carried him away, keeping him a
close prisoner. Then the Witches divided up the kingdom, and ruled
the four parts of it until you came here. That was why the people
were so glad to see you, and why they thought from your initials that
you were their rightful ruler."

"But, at that time," said the Wizard, thoughtfully, "there were two
Good Witches and two Wicked Witches ruling in the land."

"Yes," replied Ozma, "because a good Witch had conquered Mombi in the
North and Glinda the Good had conquered the evil Witch in the South.
But Mombi was still my grandfather's jailor, and afterward my father's
jailor. When I was born she transformed me into a boy, hoping that
no one would ever recognize me and know that I was the rightful
Princess of the Land of Oz. But I escaped from her and am now
the Ruler of my people."

No vabbè spettacolo, spettacolo!

ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

Da Nuke The Fridge

Please treat this as a rumor until it is confirmed.

A source close to the production of Disney’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” franchise claims that there are two films that will follow up the success of the current Oz film. One film will be a spin-off/prequel, while the other will be a sequel.

The source states that two of the major roles will be recast for different reasons. Director Sam Raimi has stated that he is not interested in returning for a second go around in the Land of Oz. Although Disney would like him back, there are those who would rather keep him out. Apparently, actor Robert Downey, Jr. was close to signing on as the Wizard a.k.a. Oscar Diggs, when there was a falling out between Raimi and Downey. Studio heads were upset by Raimi’s decision to cast James Franco over Downey. So, with Raimi stepping away from the director’s chair, this would be a clear invitation for Downey to take over the role as the Wizard. In the process, Downey would be offered a sweetheart deal to not only act in the sequel, but in the Iron Man/Avengers’ films as well.

The other major role that is up in the air is that of the witch Theodora better known as the Wicked Witch of the West played by the beautiful Mila Kunis. It seems none of the executives were taken with her performance and are thinking of recasting the part. The good news is both Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams will return in their respective roles as Evanora and Glinda in both the spin-off and the sequel. The spin-off film will focus on the origin of the three witches and the beginning of the rivalry between Evanora and Glinda. This would be a perfect opportunity to introduce a new actress to replace Theodora, which will all depend on whether the sequel or spin-off is made first.

Finally, word is circulating that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) could be asked to step in and direct one or both of the follow-up films.

What are your thoughts on this news?

The action/adventure/fantasy film “Oz: The Great and Powerful” is now showing in theaters. It stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff, Abigail Spencer, Joey King, Bill Cobbs, Tony Cox, Martin Klebba, Tim Holmes, Mia Serafino, Toni Wynne, Bruce Campbell, Stephen R. Hart, Rob Crites, Ted Raimi, Dashiell Raimi, Oliver Raimi, and Emma Raimi. Mitchell Kapner, and David Lindsay-Abaire wrote the screenplay based on the works of L. Frank Baum. Sam Raimi directs.

Disney Great and Powerful in Second Quarter

Disney doesn’t have another “John Carter” on its hands as the success of “Oz the Great and Powerful” helped its studio division boost revenue by 13% and generate a profit during the second quarter. But Iron Mouse may be a more fitting nickname for Disney this month.

As Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” soars at the box office, the Walt Disney Co. wowed Wall Street on Tuesday when it reported a 32% rise in second quarter profits of $1.5 billion, on a 10% rise in revenue of $10.6 billion during the three months that ended March 30.

“We’re obviously pleased with our second quarter,” said Robert Iger, chairman and CEO, the Walt Disney Co. “Our results reflect our successful strategy, the strength of our brands and the value of our high-quality creative content, all of which continue to drive long-term growth and shareholder value.”

The results, which topped analysts’ expectations, were elevated mostly by strong ad growth at sports cabler ESPN, the success of “Oz the Great and Powerful,” and high attendance levels at its theme parks.

Overall revenue was up 6% at Disney’s media networks to nearly $5 billion, with cable up 9% to $3.5 billion and profits up 15% to $1.7 billion. ABC dragged down broadcast results, with profits plummeting 40% to $138 million as sales were off 2% to $1.5 billion.

Tourists flocked to Disney’s theme parks and resorts during the Easter holiday and Spring break vacation season, helping revenue rise 14% to $3.3 billion for Disney’s second-largest unit. Disney Cruise Line bookings were also mostly sold out during the quarter.

Attendance levels have evened out at Disney’s theme parks in California, after the company spent $1 billion to overhaul its California Adventure with new rides and attractions, including Cars Land. Iger revealed that before the revamp, 75% of guests visited Disneyland, while 25% crossed the plaza into California Adventure during a typical day. Now, it’s split their time 55% and 45% between the parks.

Disney’s studio division also was propped up during the quarter with “Oz the Great and Powerful,” which has gone on to earn $485 million since March 8. Its success, and strong homevideo sales of “Wreck-It Ralph,” helped the studio generate $1.3 billion in revenue (up 13%) and $118 million in profit, versus a loss of $84 million during the same frame a year ago when “John Carter” flopped.

“You’ll see more and more focus on big tentpole films and less on non-franchise, non-branded smaller films” moving forward, Iger said of pics produced by the studio.

He added that “when you consider that strategy and investment (in buying companies like Pixar, Marvel and “Star Wars”-parent Lucasfilm) you also have to consider the impact that investment has on the rest of the company — consumer products, interactive, opportunities on the theme park front. We feel good about the slate ahead.”

The consumer products division saw revenues increase 12% to $763 million, while profits rose 35% to $200 million, with merchandise based on Disney Channel’s shows, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and Marvel’s properties selling particularly well.

Those figures are only expected to increase once the studio starts releasing new “Star Wars” films through Disney’s $4 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm, which closed during the second quarter.

Disney’s interactive division also narrowed its loss to $54 million, from a loss of $70 million, as revenue from the games and online group rose 8% to $194 million during the quarter. The release of new game “Disney Infinity,” in August, is expected to continue to boost the bottomline for the division, but positive results won’t be felt until fiscal 2014, which begins in September.

Disney’s stock, which already closed at record highs late last month at around $63, is now trading at a record $66.07, up $1.01 over Monday, a gain of 1.55%.

Sequel to 'Oz the Great and Powerful' in the Works

Mitchell Kapner has been hired to pen a script for a follow-up to the tentpole fantasy that opens Friday.

With expectations of a box-office bonanza this weekend, Disney is already planning a sequel to Oz the Great and Powerful, THR has confirmed.

Mitchell Kapner has been hired to write a script for the follow-up, which would continue the adventures of Oz, played by James Franco.

Kapner came up with the concept and ideas for the origin story of Oz, basing it on the classic L. Frank Baum books, pitching it to producer Joe Roth, who set it up at Disney, and writing the initial drafts. He shares screenwriting credit with David Lindsay-Abaire, who came on board later in the process.

Roth would be back as producer.

The movie stars Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams. Sam Raimi directed the fantasy tentpole, which, despite getting lukewarm reviews, is tracking to open at in the $80 million to $90 million range this weekend. That should go a long way toward off-setting the mega-budget, which was far north of $200 million.

Before Oz, Kapner wrote The Whole Nine Yards and Days of Wrath, and also worked on the action movie Romeo Must Die. He is repped by Gersh and Fineman Entertainment.

Planning for sequels to tentpoles has become increasingly the norm in Hollywood, with movies ranging from Snow White and Huntsman to comedies such as the Hangover series engaging in the practice.

Dal sito The Sun:

Mila Kunis: We’re doing a sequel to Oz

MILA Kunis has confirmed that a sequel to Oz the Great and Powerful is in the works.

The actress, who plays Theodora, said Disney bosses have given the go-ahead for a follow-up to the fantasy film that stars James Franco as the wizard.

Mila, who this week helped a reporter over his first interview nerves, told E Online: “We’re all signed on for sequels.”

Michelle Williams, who plays Glinda the Good Witch, added: “Wherever Sam (Raimi, director) goes, I’ll go. I’d do anything Sam asks me to do. I’d get stuck in quicksand with him.”

Scriptwriter Mitchell Kapner has been tapped to pen the next instalment, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Dal sito Twitter:

Is oz the great and powerful 2 still happening?

No.

Some films that Disney have put on the “back burner”

• NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN

• OZ 2

• RESCUE RANGERS

• TINK AND GENIES (could change soon)

Il film pare essere stato stoppato.
