Alan Menken hints Hunchback of Notre Dame remake

Alan Menken has hinted 'The Hunchback Of Notre Dame' could be made into a live-action remake.

The iconic composer - who is known for his musical scores for hit Disney animated movies including 'Aladdin' and 'Beauty and the Beast' - has kept tight-lipped about which classic tale the studio is set to reboot, but he wants to see the French story remade.

Speaking to NME, Menken, who also composed the original animation, said: "I can't say anything yet but I think 'Hunchback' would make an amazing live-action musical."

Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, the story follows deformed Quasimodo, who lives in the bell tower of the Parisian cathedral, and wishes to go down to live with the rest of society.

However, his guardian, the evil Judge Claude Frollo wants to keep him locked away and rid the world of hellish beings.

When Quasimodo meets the beautiful Esmeralda, he is persuaded to help her and the rest of the gypsies from their fate at the hands of Frollo.

This project would join Disney's ever growing franchise of live-action reboots which has seen 'Maleficent', 'Cinderella', 'The Jungle Book' and most recently, the box office smash 'Beauty and the Beast'.

Among the other remakes being lined up are 'The Lion King', 'Mulan', 'Dumbo' and 'The Little Mermaid'.

Director Tim Burton recently revealed Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Eva Green and Michael Keaton will all appear in his reimagining of the flying elephant 'Dumbo'.

The movie - which will also include animated elements - will all be filmed in England and is currently scheduled for release in the US on March 29, 2019.

'Dumbo' is one of the classic Disney films, which tells the story of a ostracized baby elephant who strives to prove his worth after he is mocked for having big ears.

For the live-action adaptation, Ehren Kruger has written the script and is also producing alongside 'Tron: Legacy's' Justin Springer.

Da DenofGeek:

The Hunchback Of Notre Dame: Disney looking at live action remake
Disney is potentially looking to The Hunchback Of Notre Dame for its next live action take on an animated movie.

Even while Beauty And The Beast is warming up the shelves in Sainsbury and Aladdin is filling up the UK's sound stages (while Mulan pre-production continues in parallel with the complex VFX work needed for The Lion King), Disney continues to pillage its attic full of toys even further. Another 'brand deposit' movie seems to be on the way, once again taking an older, already-loved property and finding new ways to sell it to us, even as our nostalgia for the original is being simultaneously rekindled.

This time it's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, previously realised as Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale's undervalued, overlooked, again-topical animated musical, and then adapted for the stage. Composer Alan Menken has been interviewed by the NME and while he couldn't come out and confirm the existence of the project he did the very next best thing.

"I can’t say anything yet," Menken said, "but I think Hunchback would make an amazing live action musical."

Disney Rings ‘Hunchback’ Bell: David Henry Hwang To Script Live Action Musical, Alan Menken/Stephen Schwartz Writing Music
by Mike Fleming Jr

EXCLUSIVE: Tony-winning M. Butterfly playwright David Henry Hwang has been set by Disney to write Hunchback, a live action musical adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz will write the music. Mandeville is producing along with Josh Gad. I had heard that Gad, a star of the Mandeville-produced blockbuster Beauty and the Beast, might play the lead character, but insiders at the studio said no casting is solid at this point.

Hwang’s other work includes the plays Chinglish, Yellow Face, Kung Fu, Golden Child, and The Dance and the Railroad, and Broadway musicals including the Elton John & Tim Rice collaboration Aida, the revival of Flower Drum Song and Disney’s animated Tarzan. M. Butterfly was revived on Broadway in 2017 in a Julie Taymor-directed production starring Clive Owen. His collaboration with composer Jeanine Tesori, Soft Power, opened last May in Los Angeles. He is America’s most produced living opera librettist as well.

Three-time Oscar winner Schwartz’ credits include Wicked, Godspell and Pippin. Eight-time Oscar winner Menken’s credits include Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and the original score for the 1996 Disney animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

The new film will pull from the ’96 animated film and the Hugo novel but not the stage production that Schwartz and Menken collaborated on for the stage in Europe. David Hoberman, who runs Mandeville with Todd Lieberman, has been fixated on a live action Hunchback for over 30 years going back to when he was Disney film president. An early attempt led to the animated film and another resulted in a limited TV series on ABC. Now it has come back around as a feature film, and while it is early and not on the Disney release calendar, Hunchback has some of the most storied players from the stage and musical realms.

Gad teamed with Menken & Schwartz on a huge Universal deal several years ago for an original musical with Jeremy Garelick.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame“.

Speaking at an event to promote Aladdin, Menken was asked about which of his classic Disney films will be given the live action treatment next.

"They all seem to be moving that way! The Little Mermaid's next, with Rob Marshall directing and I'm going to be having lyrics by Lin Manuel Miranda – who I knew since he was a little kid!," he said.

The composer went on to clarify the next Disney live-action remakes which are in the works: "They're developing Hunchback, which will be complicated because there are dark aspects to that which we're going to have to navigate."

Rumor:

Da We Got This Covered:

Game Of Thrones Star Being Eyed For Hunchback Of Notre Dame Remake

With Aladdin behind them and The Lion King arriving next week, Disney are pressing ahead with their endless stream of live-action (or CGI) remakes of their classic animated movies. We’ve previously brought you the news that the studio is working on a new Hercules, possibly with Alexander Skarsgard in the lead, and now we’ve got some info on their upcoming revamp of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Deadline reported at the beginning of the year that Disney was developing the remake, to be titled simply Hunchback, with Josh Gad attached as producer. This led many to theorize that the Beauty and the Beast actor may also play the lead. Well, We Got This Covered has been told that this is indeed the likely scenario.

On the other hand, we’ve also heard who Disney is eyeing for another key role: Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is being considered for the part of Captain Phoebus. In the 1997 animated film, Phoebus – ally to Quasimodo and love interest of Esmeralda – was voiced by Kevin Kline. Coster-Waldau would certainly be a good fit for a tougher iteration of the character, perhaps slightly closer to the darker version from the original novel and other adaptations.

We haven’t got hold of any other names at present, though, so it’s anyone’s guess as to who Disney is looking at for Esmeralda and the villain of the piece, Judge Frollo. Social media has often pointed to Gal Gadot being a good fit for the former, but others are hoping that a Romani actress is cast in the part, seeing as Esmeralda’s ethnicity is key to her character in the original.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. For now, you can catch The Lion King in cinemas from July 19th, with Mulan being the next remake to drop on March 27th, 2020.

Tell us, though, are you interested in a new Hunchback of Notre Dame? Have your say in the comments section below.

Entrambi sarebbero perfetti secondo me.
