CITAZIONE (veu @ 9/12/2016, 1:37) *

Is This 22-year-old Australian Actress Disney’s Choice for Mulan ?

Will Natasha Liu Bordizzo portray the Chinese heroine in a live-action film ?

Chinese social media is abuzz with speculation that 22-year-old Australian actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo has scored the role of Hua Mulan in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation.

Bordizzo made her big screen debut last year in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny (卧虎藏龙:青冥宝剑), the sequel to the 2000 hit, in which she played the young martial arts acolyte “Snow Vase.”

Rumors started spreading on Chinese social media last week that the young actress had nabbed the role of the legendary female heroine from an ancient Chinese ballad.

The speculation got to such a fever pitch that the official Disney Weibo eventually weighed into the discussion on Friday to say the final decision on the role of Mulan had not been made and that they were “still in the casting process.”

Neither Bordizzo nor her representatives responded to queries from China Film Insider about her potential involvement in the project.

The former law student from Sydney is also a black belt band one in taekwondo and has trained in kempo karate — skills which she says helped her get her role in Crouching Tiger 2.

No doubt those abilities would also come in handy in depicting Hua Mulan, the legendary female warrior who fought in male disguise as a general in her father’s stead in China 2,000 years ago.

Ever since the live-action remake of Disney’s Mulan was announced, fans have been concerned that Disney would whitewash the story. The studio had to quell rumors they were planning to include a white male lead in the film.

Last year the studio promised a “global casting search” to find a Chinese actress to play the legendary female heroine. Chinese actresses like Fan Bingbing, Zhang Ziyi, and Liu Yifei have been among many others fans have speculated would be good for the role.

Bordizzo, whose father is of Italian heritage and mother Chinese, describes herself as “very Australian” but says she got a lot more in touch with her Chinese side after starring in Crouching Tiger 2.

“I’ve been told my Mandarin is at about the level of a 10-year-old Chinese girl so that’s pretty much where I’m at,’ she told Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph in February last year.

“Fortunately they say that it’s cute, not stupid.”

Bordizzo is no stranger to China, having been there to promote Crouching Tiger 2 last year. The model/actor was in country as recently as six weeks ago on a trip she described as her “very own Lost in Translation.”

She is also active on Sina Weibo where she is already rapidly approaching 60,000 followers.

The movie is officially set for release on November 2, 2018.

Vedremo...

Regista donna

Da The Hollywood Reporter

Disney's Live-Action 'Mulan' Finds Director (Exclusive)

Niki Caro will helm the film, while ‘Crouching Tiger’ producer Bill Kong is joining as EP.
Niki Caro, who broke through with the 2002 Maori family drama Whale Rider, will direct Disney’s live-action Mulan, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

In an industry where female-helmed tentpoles are still rare, Caro will be the second woman at the studio to direct a movie budgeted at over $100 million. (Ava DuVernay is the first, with A Wrinkle in Time.)

Caro’s most recent film, Focus’ upcoming The Zookeeper’s Wife, has been praised for its gender-inclusive set by its star, Jessica Chastain. Disney previously worked with Caro, a New Zealand native, on the 2015 cross-country drama McFarland, USA, for which she lived in central California for nearly a year to immerse herself in the Mexican-American community there.

Disney also considered other women for its woman-warrior project, including Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins and Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones). Caro’s hiring likely takes her out of the running for Captain Marvel, the studio’s first female-fronted superhero movie. THR reported last August that she was on the short list of directors for that film, along with Homeland’s Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria, who directed 2012’s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

Disney and producers Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner are taking pains to assure fans that Mulan will be culturally authentic. The studio had initially sought an Asian director for the project, meeting with Ang Lee (who passed, citing scheduling) and Rogue One star Jiang Wen, a hit director in his native China. Sony, which is developing a rival live-action film about the Chinese legend, also hoped to put an Asian director at the helm, but ultimately hired television veteran Alex Graves.

In addition to extensive conversations with Chinese cultural consultants and working closely with Disney’s own China-based team, the studio is bringing on Hong Kong-based super-producer Bill Kong as executive producer. Kong produced the most successful Chinese films to cross over – Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, for which he received an Oscar nomination – as well as many of China’s biggest hits, including Monster Hunt, Wolf Totem and Journey to the West.

Last fall, controversy briefly arose when reports surfaced that the original spec that Disney purchased, written by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, featured non-Chinese characters, including a white male lead. Disney quickly responded that Mulan and all primary characters in its movie, which has been rewritten by Jurassic World’s Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, will remain Chinese. The studio is focusing its casting search in mainland China for the main roles, including the legendary woman warrior herself.

Caro is repped by UTA, Artists House and Lichter Grossman.

Dal sito Epicstream:

the expo could also shed some light on upcoming Disney projects like Gigantic or the live-action Mulan film

As for Mulan, another highly anticipated upcoming remake, directed by Whale Rider’s Niki Caro, Bailey calls it a fresh take on female empowerment, which is very important to the studio. (He confidently stated that Disney has “made far more $100 million-plus movies with female leads than all the other studios combined.”) “Mulan is clearly an empowered-female story but we can also do something new in this reimagining, make it a little more muscular, stronger, with touch of Ridley Scott,” he said. (Sources close to production say that, unlike Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, Mulan is not expected to prominently feature songs, though that could change.) Another tantalizing aspect of Mulan: China. The story is based on a Chinese legend and gives Disney an opportunity to crack that fertile market in a big way, something that has clearly been on the company’s mind, exemplified, in the literally splashiest way possible, by last year’s opening of the Shanghai Disney Resort. “Obviously the idea of working with collaborators in China is an interesting opportunity too,” Bailey said. Earlier in our chat he had referenced the importance of “the global movie audience in this moment.” Mulan exemplifies that.

Exclusive: 'Mulan' Director Niki Caro Says No Songs in the Upcoming Remake

Earlier today I spoke to Niki Caro, the amazingly talented director of "Whale Rider," "McFarland, USA," and the upcoming, incredibly moving "The Zookeeper's Wife" (we'll have more on that in a bit), and at the end of the conversation I brought up her upcoming remake of Disney's animated classic "Mulan." And she gave us exclusive details about her live-action version of the movie and why you should very much look forward to the movie.

Moviefone: So I was talking to Sean Bailey and he was telling me about your approach to "Mulan." It sounds great!

Niki Caro: What did he say?

He said that it's going to be very muscular and a Ridley Scott approach. But I wanted to hear from you what your approach is going to be.

Well I'm not going to contradict Sean. His sensibility and mine for the material is right in sync. It's a big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving.

That sounds awesome.

Yeah!

But from what I understand, no songs?

Yes, from what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.

I've heard that the deleted scene where the Huns sneak in via a Chinese dragon is going to be in this movie. Is that true?

I could not possibly comment upon that.

So there you have it: "I'll Make a Man Out of You" is out, but all sorts of thrilling awesomeness is in.

Caro's "The Zookeeper's Wife" is in theaters on March 31st.

Certo una sequenza di "I'll make a man out of you" fatta come si deve sarebbe valsa tutto il film...

Is Mulan a musical? Director Niki Caro weighs in on recent comments

Is Mulan a musical? Disney fans had strong reactions to the possibility that the upcoming live-action version of the 1998 animated film might not be. Director Niki Caro (Whale Rider) recently did an interview with Moviefone where she said, “From what I understand, [there are] no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.”

However, Caro later talked to The LA Times and spoke about whether or not this will be a musical, saying, “I don’t know where that’s come from. We’ve never talked about songs, and no decision has been made.” She also said, “I haven’t even started working on it yet.” Then, in an interview with EW on Tuesday morning, Sean Bailey, the president of Motion Picture Production at Walt Disney Studios said that Mulan is “not currently intended to be [a musical].” However, he added that “nothing is off the table.”

Fans have been up in arms on social media after the first comment, discussing the lack of their favorite songs. The recent live-action Disney film Beauty and the Beast had not only the songs devotees have loved since the animated version, but Alan Menken, who did both scores, actually added three new songs.

So, is Mulan a musical? Whether or not we get music, this film will reportedly be empowering for young girls. Bailey did an interview with Vulture earlier this month where he spoke about the film about a young woman during the Han Dynasty who dresses as a man to become a great warrior. He said, “’Mulan is clearly an empowered-female story but we can also do something new in this reimagining, make it a little more muscular, stronger, with touch of Ridley Scott.”
