THR/EE

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/crue...er-kelly-830467

'Fifty Shades' Writer Kelly Marcel Tackling Disney's Live-Action 'Cruella' (Exclusive)

The studio is fast-tracking the project as it cements its live-action fairy tale empire, dating no fewer than four untitled films through 2020 in addition to several movies already set for release, including 'The Jungle Book' and 'Beauty and the Beast.'
Saving Mr. Banks screenwriter Kelly Marcel is attached to write Disney's Cruella, based on the steely and well-appointed villainess Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians.

Marcel, who most recently adapted Fifty Shades of Grey, is working with Togetherness co-creator Steve Zissis on the story.

Word that Disney is fast-tracking Cruella comes after the studio dated no fewer than four untitled live-action films drawing from its animated vault. That's in addition to several movies that have already been dated: Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book (April 15, 2016), Tim Burton's sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass (May 27, 2016) and Bill Condon's Beauty and the Beast (March 17, 2017).

Disney is far and away the industry leader in this space, pairing well-known filmmakers, writers and actors with classic properties. Burton's Alice in Wonderland defied all expectations in grossing $1 billion at the global box office in 2010. Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie, earned a better-than-expected $758 million globally in 2014, followed by Cinderella earlier this year with $542 million.

Aline Brosh McKenna worked on an early version of the script for Cruella, produced by Andrew Gunn (Sky High, Bedtime Stories).

De Vil first appeared in Dodie Smith's 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians but became a Disney icon with the 1961 animated movie. And it's not the character's first incarnation in a live-action feature. Glenn Close played the character in 1996's 101 Dalmatians and the 2000 sequel, 102 Dalmatians.

Disney has several other live-action event films in the works. Burton is attached to direct Dumbo, while Reese Witherspoon is attached to star in and produce Tink, based on the classic Peter Pan character Tinker Bell. Witherspoon will produce Tink with Bruna Papandrea, her partner at the duo’s production banner, Pacific Standard. There's also a Maleficent sequel with Jolie and writer Linda Woolverton in the works, along with a live-action adaptation of Mulan and a Jungle Cruise project with Dwayne Johnson attached to star.

When dating the untitled fairy tale films earlier this week, Disney wouldn't say which movies might fill the four slots, which are Dec. 22, 2017; Nov. 2, 2018; March 29, 2019; and Nov. 18, 2019.

Other live-action tentpoles being plotted by Disney proper include A Wrinkle in Time, which Frozen co-director and co-writer Jennifer Lee is adapting, and Pete's Dragon.

Marcel is repped by UTA in the U.S. Zissis is repped by UTA and Abrams Entertainment.

Emma Stone in Talks to Play Disney's Cruella de Vil.

Emma Stone in talks to star in Disney’s live-action Cruella de Vil movie

Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man films) is in early negotiations to play the iconic 101 Dalmations villainess Cruella de Vil in the live-action Cruella movie, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The trade says that Kelly Marcel is writing the script for The Walt Disney Studios film, which is intended to be an origin story of the character. Aline Brosh McKenna worked on an early version of the script. Andrew Gunn is producing the movie, while Kristin Burr and Jessica Virtue are overseeing for the studio.

The project does not have a director attached yet, but the goal is to start shooting later this year.

Cruella de Vil was the villain of the 1961 animated classic and has since been played by Glenn Close in the 1996 live-action movie 101 Dalmations and in its 2000 sequel, 102 Dalmations.

The character originated in Dodie Smith’s 1956 book, “The Hundred and One Dalmatians.” Smith also briefly revisited the character in her lesser-known science fiction sequel book, “The Starlight Barking.”

Confermata ufficialmente la lavorazione del film. Sarà Emma Stone a interpretare la protagonista e Kelly Marcel firma la sceneggiatura.

Dal sito Europe Newsweek:

Another big release is Cruella, based on the 101 Dalmations villain. Emma Stone is set to star with Saving Mr. Banks scribe Kelly Marcel writing the script.

Dal sito Forbes.com:

Cruella will presumably be a variation on 101 Dalamations just as Maleficent was a variation on Sleepy Beauty. Or maybe it’s a straight prequel or sequel, but that’s speculation for now.

Dal sito Hollywood Reporter:

Disney Stakes Out Release Dates for 'Jungle Book 2,' 'Maleficent 2' and More

The studio claims five more slots for its upcoming live-action fairy tales, which also include 'Cruella,' 'A Wrinkle in Time,' 'Jungle Cruise' and 'Dumbo,' among other titles.
Disney has staked out a number of primetime release dates for its upcoming live-action fairy tales, even if the studio has yet to say which movie will open when. The crop of films includes The Jungle Book 2.

The bold move comes in the wake of the success of Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book — and the dismal debut of Universal's live-action fairy tale prequel, The Huntsman: Winter's War. Over the weekend, The Jungle Book crushed The Huntsman, grossing $61.5 million in its second weekend compared to $19.4 million for Universal's film. All told, The Jungle Book has already earned $533 million at the global box office, cementing Disney's prowess in spinning classic animated titles into live-action tentpoles.

The dates claimed by Disney are July 28, 2017 (instead of Dec. 22, 2017); April 6, 2018; Aug. 3, 2018; Dec. 25, 2018; and Dec. 20, 2019. That's in addition to two dates the studio has already claimed for untitled live-action fairy tales — Nov. 2, 2018, and Nov. 8, 2019 — meaning there will be four such films in 2018 alone.

Studio insiders say one of the release dates announced Monday will go to The Jungle Book 2, which is already in the works, even as Warner Bros. preps its own Jungle Book for Oct. 19, 2018. Disney won't comment, but it's possible Favreau's sequel could be ready in time for the August or November 2018 slot, putting it in the direct path of the rival Jungle Book, directed by Andy Serkis.

Other Disney titles that will fill the slots include Cruella, starring Emma Stone; A Wrinkle in Time, directed by Ava DuVernay; Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson; director Tim Burton's Dumbo; a Mary Poppins sequel from helmer Rob Marshall that is set to star Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda; Maleficent 2 with Angelina Jolie; and a Tinker Bell film starring Reese Witherspoon. Director Lasse Hallstrom's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is another priority.

The Jungle Book, Jungle Cruise and Mary Poppins aren't fairy tales, but fall in the same realm as the other films in terms of Disney's ambitious blueprint to reimagine classic stories.

Dal sito TheKnowledgeonline:

London likely location for Disney’s Cruella

Disney’s forthcoming film Cruella, a punk-era re-imagining of the classic tale, is set to star Emma Stone as the wicked Cruella de Vil. The feature’s producer, the Canadian Andrew Gunn, is currently in London to scout potential locations.

Seasoned UK playwright and screenwriter Jez Butterworth (Jerusalem), has been brought in to carry out a few tweaks on the screenplay. The blueprint of the script comes from Kelly Marcel, well known for Fifty Shades of Grey and Saving Mr Banks.

Marcel – along with Steve Zissis – worked on the original story concept, which re-imagines the iconic Cruella, in the words of Gunn, “as a kind of Vivienne Westwood - if Vivienne was really, really mean - meets John Galliano, meets Alexander McQueen”.

The producer is currently in the UK’s capital to scout potential locations for the film, which is set in 1979 when the punk era was in full swing.

Talking to The Knowledge, Gunn said: “Butterworth is ideal for the job, not just for ironing out the screenplay, but also for suggesting possible filming spots in London, particularly as he knew personally some of the punk crowd including Malcolm McLaren.”

He agreed that the writer’s knowledge of the capital was key, adding: “It’s great, as we didn’t really yet have a sense of place, and Jez has been giving us ideas of locations, such as where Cruella’s apartment could be, where her warehouse may be etc.”

Gunn also said the UK provides a great pool of talented crew.

There is no director on board yet, but there is a shortlist with an appointment likely to be made very soon. The window for filming is fairly tight due to Emma Stone’s availability: shooting would have to slot in between October and January with pre-production getting underway this summer.

More details will be available on Production Intelligence once specifics are confirmed in terms of UK hires, dates and locations so subscribers should keep their eyes peeled for more over the coming weeks.

Da The Hollywood Reporter

Disney's Live-Action 'Cruella' Finds Director

Emma Stone is attached to star in the origin story of the Dalmatians-obessed villain first seen in '101 Dalmatians.'
Mozart of the Jungle co-creator and theater director Alex Timbers is in negotiations to helm Cruella, Disney’s live-action re-imagining of the 101 Dalmatians character that will star Emma Stone.

Stone will play infamous villain Cruella De Vil in what is being billed as an origin story, set in the 1980s.

De Vil was first seen in the 1961 animated classic. Glenn Close played her in the 1996 live-action film produced by John Hughes that featured the character as the head of a fashion house.

Marc Platt is set to produce, along with Andrew Gunn. Kristin Burr and Jessica Virtue are overseeing for the studio.

Cruella is described as having both strong fashion and music sensibilities, something that seems to be a natural fit for Timbers.

He is a two-time Tony-nominee for directing Peter and the Star Catcher (a Peter Pan prequel) and directing and writing the book for the rock musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. He also directed the Broadway musical adaptation of Rocky and the HBO special The Pee-Wee Herman Show.

Timbers, along with Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman, created Mozart, Amazon’s dramatic comedy about the effects of a new maestro coming on to the New York Symphony has on various characters. It won the Golden Globe for best television series in the musical and comedy category earlier this year.
