For the last half decade, it’s been hard to go anywhere without seeing a poster or advertisement for a live-action remake of a beloved animated Disney movie. Between The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King (among others), this has clearly been a major objective for the powers that be at Disney. And now, the latest movie to get the live-action treatment will be Hercules, which originally hit theaters in 1997. This new remake of the animated musical will be produced by a duo who know a thing or two about blockbuster action: The Russo Brothers, who last year directed the highest-grossing movie of all time in Avengers: Endgame.

Not much more is known about what this new Hercules will be all about; the only details shared so far are the involvement of The Russo Brothers (who confirmed their involvement in an Instagram post), and that Dave Callaham (Zombieland: Double Tap, Shang-Chi, Wonder Woman: 1984) has been hired to write the script. That means the entire casting process is still to come, which means it’s not too late for anyone to get their Hercules casting ideas out there.

Anyone who loves the movie—and let’s be real, we all love the movie—probably has a strong opinion. Part of the fun thing about pulling together ideas like this is thinking about ways to capture the same energy that we all love so much about the original film, but finding ways to have the remake still be unique in its own way. With these cast picks, we hope to capture that spirit. Without further ado, we give you our dream Hercules live-action picks.

Hercules - Michael B. Jordan

Someone with the name Chris (Pratt, Pine), or Hemsworth (Liam), or both (Chris Hemsworth) would be great traditional picks here, as would Armie Hammer, who has the physical size needed to embody the god-like Hercules. But why not mix it up a bit and go with MBJ? He's definitely got the charm that the part will require. And since he’s already made his MCU impact in Black Panther, he’s probably got a direct line to the Russo Brothers. Let’s make it happen.

Meg - Ariana Grande

If we’re going for a more traditional actor here, Emma Stone (La La Land) and Zendaya both have the singing experience and snarky wit that would make them perfect fits alongside MBJ for the role. That being said, Ariana’s ponytail and enormous voice fit perfectly, and she started her career acting on Nickelodeon, so she can definitely turn the clock back. Plus, she sang Meg’s signature song, “(I Won’t Say) I’m In Love” during a Disney singalong a few weeks ago, and it was absolutely perfect. Who could argue?


Phil - Danny DeVito

Do we even need to talk about this? Danny DeVito was so perfect for his role as Phil in the 1997’s original Hercules, and no one else could possibly fill those shoes. And why would they when the man himself, at the ripe age of 75, is going just as strong as ever? We’re already waiting for the show-stopping update of “One Last Hope.”

Hades - Sam Rockwell

For as far off the deep end as it might seem like James Woods has gone these days, we have to admit that his fast-talking and slippery take on Hades in the original animated film is one of the best things about the movie. That’s why we need someone like Sam Rockwell—who frequently plays similarly quick-tongued characters, particularly as the villain Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2—to step in for this round. Rockwell’s personality is the perfect fit for this role.

Zeus- Idris Elba

Since we’re going a slightly different direction with Herc, why not go a slightly different direction with his dad, too? A little The Wire reunion would be pretty cool (and having both be gods or demi-gods would feel quite fitting), Elba already played a “Black Superman” in last year’s Hobbs and Shaw, so this is a logical next step. And we’ll fight anyone who’d dare argue that Elba isn’t god-like.


Hera - Cate Blanchett

Who’s the most elegant actress in showbusiness? Cate Blanchett, that’s who. And what’s the defining quality of Hera? Just how elegant she is. Hopefully the live-action version of Hercules beefs Hera’s role up a little bit, because in the cartoon she does a whole lot of hanging around and not a ton of talking—and when you’ve got Cate Blanchett—a multiple Academy Award winner—that's just won’t be an option.

The Muses - Jennifer Hudson, Janelle Monae, Lizzo, and H.E.R.

The closest thing to a narrator in Disney’s Hercules comes in the form of the muses, who sing us through the entire Hercules story. We can enter the 2020 version of telling this story with three muses who are distinctly different; Hudson, best known for her time on American Idol and in Dreamgirls, is the most traditionally talented vocalist. Monae is a super-talented mutli-hyphenate who can add a little bit of funk to the mix. We couldn't dare leave Lizzo out of this group, with her big hits and even bigger personality. H.E.R. can bring her own unique style, with the ability to enter full Prince mode and start shredding on the guitar just like she’s done two years in a row at the Grammys.

Pain and Panic - Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz

Ah, Pain and Panic. Hades’ loyal henchmen duo carry a lot of the movie’s comic relief load, so it’s important that this duo a) be funny, and have good chemistry. So why not go with the improv comedy duo of Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz? You know this pair from elsewhere, as Middleditch led Silicon Valley and Schwartz played Jean-Ralphio on Parks and Recreation, but the two together have really natural comedic rhythm, and their three new Netflix specials prove that they can make you laugh with literally no material prepared. So we’d feel pretty good about these two stepping into these little rascal’s shoes (or, their Air Hercs).
