Rumors Swirl Around Disney's Mysterious 'Paperman'

Earlier this week, an unannounced short from Walt Disney Animation Studios, titled Paperman, was given a G rating by the MPAA. Naturally, word about the project has begun leaking out, leading to some very interesting theories.

Bleeding Cool discovered a reference to Paperman on the personal blog of Disney animator Patrick Osborne, who names himself as being the animation supervisor on the short.

Osborne writes:

"We’re finishing up a rather exciting project at Disney in the next few weeks. It’s been keeping me pretty busy and away from this blog. The short, directed by John Kahrs, will be heading out there sometime next year. We’re very proud of this one and can’t wait to show the world."
Kahrs, a former Pixar animator, joined Disney around 2007 and most recently served as animation supervisor on Tangled. Osborne also names the film's producer, art director, and VFX supervisor.

Pixar animator Catherine Hicks added this on Twitter:

"I saw Disney's new short Paperman yesterday. I have never seen anything like it before. Absolutely incredible. Hard to describe."
Dutch site Animatie.blog.nl reports that there may be more to these comments than the expected pre-release enthusiasm. Their sources have whispered that Paperman was created using a "new technique" that's been "described as groundbreaking" and 'could wipe motion capture from the map'.

Of course, this is light years away from being substantiated. But it does mesh with what we know about the development of light field imaging technology at Pixar and Disney Research.

As I exclusively reported last year, the studio has filed patent applications for methods that allow light field data to be converted into rendered 3D images. That would certainly change the playing field for mocap.

We'll find out what Paperman is all about, and what makes it so special, soon enough. Osborne's wrote 'next year' in December, so it wouldn't be a shock to see it attached to Wreck-It Ralph following a festival run.

Q: What are you all working on at the moment?

John Kahrs: Right now I am directing a short film, that is all I can say at the moment! It hasn't been announced; it’s going to be amazing. Since it hasn't been announced at all, the fact that I said I am doing it is kind of enough.

22 luglio 2011 - da TAG Blog:

John Kahrs' short film is in production.

25 ottobre 2011 - dal sito Variety:

Christophe Beck is now at work on the Disney toon short 'Paperman', "a composer's dream", he says, as the animators are now illustrating to his music.

5 dicembre 2011 - dal sito Motivarti:

Scott Watanabe is a graduate from San Jose State University with a degree in animation/illustration. For the last 4 years, he has worked at Disney Feature Animation as a Visual Development Artist on Tangled, Paperman, and Wreck-It Ralph.

20 dicembre 2011 - dal sito Bobbyinlosangeles:

So former Pixar and current Disney animator, John Kahrs, is directing a short film here at Disney. I can't say much but it looks bloody amazing. I've never seen anything like it.

I mention it here because I think it's inspiring that a big studio like Disney is experimenting and moving forward with new looks and techniques in this medium.

29 dicembre 2011 - dal sito Big Happy Accident:

We’re finishing up a rather exciting project at Disney in the next few weeks. It’s been keeping me pretty busy. The short is called Paperman. Directed by John Kahrs, the short will be running the festival circuit next year.

We’re very proud of this one and can’t wait to show the world.

Produced by Kristina Reed
Animation Supervision by myself
Art Direction by Jeff Turley
VFX Supervision by Kyle Odermat

30 gennaio 2012 - dal sito TAG Blog:

Spent the morning and early afternoon at Diz Co.'s Hat building on Riverside Drive. Got to see some clips from an upcoming short that's going to be kind of ground-breaking. It's just now wrapping up, and nobody could tell me if it's going to be attached to an oncoming feature or hit the festival circuit as a stand-alone.

8 febbraio 2012 - dal sito Rope of silicon:

Included in today's MPAA bulletin is the rating for a new Walt Disney short called Paperman (rated G) that I had not heard of before so I did a little snooping and it turns out it's directed by John Kahrs, an animator who worked on such Pixar films as Ratatouille, The Incredibles and Toy Story 2. Kahrs also served as animation supervisor on Tangled.

9 febbraio 2012 - dal sito TAG Blog:

They've had a project at Walt Disney Animation Studios that I haven't uttered a peep about. They should be proud. Because the look of it is terrific, and unlike anything else out there.

I've had the good fortune to be shown clips of the piece referenced above for the last several months. Nobody can tell me when it will be released, but I imagine that the Mouse won't sit on it very long.

10 febbraio 2012 - dal sito Turley Sketch:

Just a small announcement, I have for the past year and some change been Art Directing a charming short called 'Paperman' directed by John Kahrs. We have been keeping our lips sealed for the most part of what it's about. John Kahrs, myself and all the wonderfully gifted artist that worked on our show really pushed hard to establish a style that supports the story and at the same time gives you a visual experience like nothing you've seen before! Please keep your eyes out for it..you don't want to miss it. That being said, I will be posting soon on this dusty blog seeing that my Production Design/Art Directing Gig is coming to an end.

Catherine Hicks wrote:
I saw Disney's new short 'Paperman' yesterday. I have never seen anything like it before. Absolutely incredible. Hard to describe. John Kahrs made a fantastic short. I don't know if I can say too much more except for that Disney is doing amazing things.

David Condolora wrote:
I saw an earlier version [of 'Paperman'], and still loved it. Can't wait for the world to see it!

dal sito Stitch Kingdom:

Our friends at animatie.blog.nl offered up what they've dug up surrounding the mystery short. Sources have told them that, "this Paperman thing uses a software and an approach to 3D animation that is truly a game-changer. When people see this, anyone who uses Mo-Cap will look RIDICULOUS."

animatie.blog.nl has linked Paperman to a new feature-length film being worked on by Ron Clements and John Musker. They believe that 'Paperman' may simply be more of a practical test for something even more ambitious. According to another of their sources who claimed to have spoken to Musker at the recent Annie Awards, "They’re doing something very technical, new and secretive. Something with an interface that translates hand drawn animation into CG."

Whether that applies to 'Paperman' remains to be seen, but the vibe is that Disney is so enthused with the short that it will waste no time in promoting it through film festivals this year.

Dal sito Big Screen Animation:

Dutch site Animatie.blog.nl reports that there may be more to these comments than the expected pre-release enthusiasm. Their sources have whispered that Paperman was created using a "new technique" that's been "described as groundbreaking" and "could wipe motion capture from the map".

11 febbraio 2012 - Dal sito Stitch Kingdom:

Disney animator Eric Daniels has linked to the article on his Facebook page, commenting the following: "A glowing review of an upcoming Disney short -- which uses a technique I helped create". Daniels previously helped create a process, first used in Disney’s Tarzan, he dubbed 'Deep Canvas.' Deep Canvas allowed animators to paint the environment over a CG model so that the computer would be able to keep track and precisely re-create the animators' application as the camera moved in 3D space. The technique earned Daniels an Annie Technical Achievement Award in 1999 and an Oscar for Technical Achievement in 2002.

Disney effects animator Bruce Wright who has most recently worked on Tangled and on the 3D conversion of The Lion King, also linked to the article.

Per PrincessMononoke, non si sa ancora di cosa tratti questo film... un'idea ce la dà Christophe Beck al 25 ottobre quando lo descrive come il "sogno di un compositore" e che gli animatori stavano illustrando la sua musica...
