‘The Lion King’ Follow-Up in the Works With Director Barry Jenkins

Disney is returning to the Pride Lands for a follow-up to “The Lion King.” Barry Jenkins, the filmmaker behind “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk,” will direct the upcoming feature based on the beloved family classic.

“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”

The movie will be a continuation of the studio’s 2019 photorealistic remake, rather than the 1994 cartoon. Jon Favreau directed the recent reboot to mixed reviews but massive box office receipts; it generated over $1.5 billion at the global box office.

Disney hasn’t announced a release date for the sequel. With COVID-19 and Jenkins’ busy schedule, it’s also unclear when the special effects-heavy production will start. Sources say the new movie will partly focus on the early years of Mufasa, the regal father of Simba whose death forms the emotional heart of the first film and its remake. Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the screenplay for the 2019 movie, is returning to write the follow-up.

The voice cast for the remake included the star-studded lineup of Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen and as Timon and Pumbaa and James Earl Jones as Mufasa. Disney has yet to announce who, if any, from that group will be part of the sequel.

Jenkins’ partner, director Lulu Wang, celebrated the news on Twitter with a nod to the film’s iconic opening music.

Disney has reimagined a number of its animated classics, including “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Mulan” and “Dumbo.” As previously announced, “Aladdin” is also getting a sequel following the commercial success of the live-action version.

The first “Lion King” was heavily influenced by Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Somehow the Bard never got around to writing a part II to the story of the indecisive Danish prince, so Disney may not be able to crib from the playwright this time around.

“The Lion King” follow-up represents something of a departure for Jenkins, who is best known for sensitively drawn indie fare, not more commercially facing big studio productions. After winning an Oscar for “Moonlight” and being nominated for a screenplay prize for “Beale Street,” Jenkins has been heavily in demand. He recently completed work on “The Underground Railroad,” Amazon’s limited-series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s best-seller. Jenkins also plans to direct a biopic of choreographer Alvin Ailey.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the news.

[...] The Oscar-winning Moonlight filmmaker will helm a prequel to Disney's 2019 hit.[...]

The Lion King live-action prequel

The Lion King live-action prequel is in development with an inspired take that revisits the iconic characters. Barry Jenkins, director of the Oscar®-winning “Moonlight,” is set to helm the film. Hans Zimmer (whose long association with “The Lion King” goes back to the 1994 original), Pharrell Williams and Nicholas Britell will deliver the music.

‘Moonlight’ Cinematographer Reteaming With Barry Jenkins on Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ Prequel

Last Thursday, during Disney’s Investor Day meeting, the studio confirmed that Moonlight director Barry Jenkins will be helming the newest biggest screen adaptation of The Lion King, in the form of a prequel.

During an interview with Variety, Jenkins revealed that he’s happy with the script and says they have something wonderful in the works, he also revealed that his Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk cinematographer, James Laxton will be the director of photography on the newest Disney feature:

My agents send me a lot of scripts. When this one came, super top secret, I was very skeptical. Like you, I remember when “The Lion King” came out. I had two nephews, and so I used to watch it with them. “Lion King” was the “Baby Shark” of my time. I’d seen it literally hundreds of times and I had this connection to it, and yet I was skeptical because, who am I to make a “Lion King” movie? Not a “Lion King” sequel! A “Lion King” movie.

Jenkins continues:

I read the script and about 40 pages in I turned to Lulu [Wang] and I said, “Holy shit, this is good.” And as I kept reading, I got further away from the side of my brain that said, “Oh, a filmmaker like you doesn’t make a film like this,” and allowed myself to get to the place where these characters, this story, is amazing. What really pushed me across the line was James, my DP, said, “You know what? There’s something really interesting in this mode of filmmaking that we haven’t done and that not many people have done.” That was when I went back to the powers that be and said, “I would love to do this, but I’ve got to be able to do what I do.” And they said yes! I think part of that is because I knew at that point that you had already shot a very big movie of your own with some of these same folks. And knowing that Chloe Zhao had gone from one of the most beautiful films of the century with “The Rider” to making a Marvel movie, I was like, “Oh, shit. If she can do it, I can do it.”

Details of the film are being kept under wraps but the trade is hearing that it will explore the origin of Mufasa. They revealed that it will be a Godfather: Part II approach to the previous film.

New music will be introduced in the sequel along with the traditional aspects of the first film. Jeff Nathanson, who worked on the first movie, wrote the script.

Barry Jenkins won the Oscar for best screenplay to Moonlight, which took home best picture for A24 studios. That next year, he was nominated for best director for If Beale Street Could Talk. Disney loves to nab their Oscar winners so this is a home run for the studio.

Disney had massive success with their 2019 adaptation of The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau. The film went on to gross $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office and was nominated for Best Achievement in Visual Effects Oscar earlier this year.

Il film entrerà in produzione quest'estate.

Fonte: The Disinsider

‘The Lion King’ Sequel To Begin Production This Summer

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Barry Jenkins’ sequel to The Lion King will be starting production in the summer of 2021.

A sequel to the 2019 remake, the film is currently casting for actors to play the roles of young Scar and Mufasa.

For both of these characters, the studio is looking for young actors to play the characters between the ages of 8 and 13.

The film was officially announced during Disney Investor Day in December. Though it is a sequel, it was rumored to explore the origin of Mufasa, which this casting breakdown only confirms.

Though the 2019 remake was directed by Jon Favreau, Academy Award- winning director Barry Jenkins will be in the director’s seat for this film. He will be teaming up once again with his cinematographer James Laxton.

The film will be produced by Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak. At this point, it is unknown where production will take place. Though no release date has been officially announced, it is likely that this will be a theatrical release, rather than one going straight to Disney+.

Dal sito Film Music Report:

Nicholas Britell Scoring Craig Gillespie’s ‘Cruella’

Nicholas Britell (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk, Succession, The Big Short, Vice) has recently been scoring Disney’s upcoming family comedy drama Cruella. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Lars and the Real Girl, Million Dollar Arm) and stars Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser and Mark Strong. The movie based on the character from Disney’s 101 Dalmations is set in 1970s London and centers on young fashion designer Cruella de Vil as she becomes obsessed with dogs’ skins, especially Dalmatians, until she eventually becomes a ruthless and terrifying legend. Dana Fox (How to Be Single, Couples Retreat) & Tony McNamara (The Favourite, The Great) wrote the screenplay based on a story by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) and Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks, Venom) & Steve Zissis (Togetherness). Kristin Burr (Christopher Robin, Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Andrew Gunn (Freaky Friday, Sky High) and Marc Platt (La La Land, Bridge of Spies) are producing the project. Cruella is set to be released in theaters on May 28, 2021 by Walt Disney Pictures and will also be available to purchase as a Premiere Access title on Disney+ on the same day.

As previously reported, Britell also has Adam McKay’s feature Don’t Look Up, Barry Jenkins’ Amazon limited series The Underground Railroad, Benjamin Millepied’s Carmen, the third season of HBO’s Succession and HBO’s currently untitled LA Lakers drama coming up. The composer is also set to write music for Disney’s The Lion King prequel directed by Jenkins.
