Da Inside the magic

Disney’s Bambi to get live-action remake

As Disney continues to see great success by reimagining some of its classic and beloved movies through live-action remakes, it seems another one has been added to the list: “Bambi.”

It goes without saying that Disney has seen a remarkable amount of success with its remakes of some of its early animated films. This year, Disney’s “The Lion King” and “Aladdin” live-action remakes grossed over $1 billion at the box-office each. Logically, it would only make sense to revisit this animated adventure film following the young fawn.
According to a new report by We Got This Covered, it’s been revealed that the remake is to be made in a style similar to “The Lion King,” meaning all the animals will be created through CGI and animation. As far as following the story of the original film, it is unknown.

It’s been shared that the film is still in the early stages of development and not much else is expected to be known about the possible remake for some time. Of course, at this time Disney has not confirmed the news.
For those not familiar with the original film, it was released by Disney in 1942 and followed Bambi, a young deer who joins his new forest friends of Thumper, Flower and Faline. As a boy, Bambi learns from his mother and father of the dangers in the open meadows where hunters can spot the animals. As he grows up, he learns that there is tragedy as well as beauty and joy in the forest world while he journeys his trek to adulthood and to be The Great Prince of the Forest.
Upon its release in 1942, the film received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Sound (Sam Slyfield), Best Song (for “Love Is a Song” sung by Donald Novis) and Original Music Score.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Live-Action ‘Bambi’ Remake In The Works At Disney

The trend of Disney’s animation to live-action remakes has been a financial success for the studio and the trend isn’t stopping anytime soon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Captain Marvel writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer (Chaos Walking) are set to write the screenplay for a live-action remake of Bambi.

Depth of Field, the production banner run by Chris and Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano and which is coming off the success of indie film The Farewell, will produce the new iteration. Depth of Field is also working on Disney’s live-action adaptation of Pinocchio being directed by Robert Zemeckis.

The trade reports that Bambi is viewed as a companion piece to films like The Jungle Book and The Lion King and is expected to use the same technology. Disney is cognizant that Bambi is less epic in scope and story and is not aiming to shoehorn a larger narrative onto the classic tale.

Other live-action remakes in the works include The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Lilo & Stitch, Peter Pan & Wendy, amongst others on the drawing board.

Released in 1942, Walt Disney’s Bambi follows a young deer named Bambi joins his new friends, a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower, in exploring his forest home. As a boy, he learns from his doting mother and his father, The Great Prince of the Forest, that there are dangers in the open meadows where hunters can spot the animals, and he meets a beautiful young doe named Faline. As Bambi grows up, he learns that there is tragedy as well as beauty and joy in his forest world and on the path to adulthood.

'Bambi' Remake in the Works With 'Captain Marvel', 'Chaos Walking' Writers (Exclusive)

In the latest move to turn its animated classics into live-action features, Disney has set its sights on one of its most storied: Bambi.

The studio has hired Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Chaos Walking) to pen the screenplay for the live-action remake.

Depth of Field, the production banner run by Chris and Paul Weitz and Andrew Miano and which is coming off the success of indie darling The Farewell, will produce the new iteration.

The original movie, released in 1942, told the story of a young fawn named Bambi as he learns his place in the forest. With his two best friends, a rabbit named Thumper and a skunk named Flower, Bambi comes of age as he faces the joys and heartache — cue the loss of a parent — of growing up.

The film received three Oscar nominations — best song, best score and best sound — but was not initially held in high esteem as it is in modern times.

Insiders say the studio views Bambi as a type of companion piece to its remakes The Jungle Book and The Lion King, which were not live-action per se but certainly made to look that way. The two, both hits (Lion King generated $1.65 billion when it was released last year), were made using envelope-pushing CG technology to create ground-breaking photo-realistic and immersive worlds of nature. The studio is cognizant that Bambi is less epic in scope and story and is not aiming to shoehorn a larger narrative onto the classic tale.

The live-action remake continues to pay off for Disney as the last two outings, Jon Favreau's Lion King and Guy Ritchie's Aladdin, were billion-dollar grossers. Upcoming in the pipeline are The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, and David Lowrey's take on Peter Pan, titled Peter and Wendy.

Depth of Field is already working on a Disney live-action remake as it is in active development on Pinocchio which has Robert Zemeckis directing.

Robertson-Dworet and Beer are two of the most sought after tentpole writers, with upcoming credits that range from Warner Bros.' Hello Kitty (Beer) to Fox/Disney's Andy Weir adaptation Artemis (Robertson-Dworet) to Universal's female Fast & Furious spinoff (both). Along with fellow writer Nicole Perlman, they run production banner Known Universe, which focuses on female-fronted genre stories.

Beer is repped by attorney firm Gang Tyre while Robertson-Dworet is repped by Management 360 and Hansen Jacobson.

Upcoming Disney Live-Action Remakes/Adaptations

Cruella is finally in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access. The live-action remakes have been a financial goldmine for Disney, so it’s not shocking that studio has many more projects in various stages of production. So let’s look ahead and see what’s to come.

[...]

What else?

Remakes for Bambi, Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, James and the Giant Peach, and a sequel to 2016’s The Jungle Book are also in various stages of development. Though, I am told these projects are much farther away from beginning than the aforementioned films we’ve listed. The studio is also in development on a Prince Anders film for Disney+, as well as the Gaston and Lefou series, and Mulan spin-offs.

Do you think it’ll be a theatrical release or Disney+ release?

Skyler Shuler @SkylerShuler:

Dal sito The Disinsider:

‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ Director Carlos López Estrada Exits Walt Disney Animation

Raya and the Last Dragon director Carlos López Estrada has confirmed he is leaving Walt Disney Animation Studios after three years. Estrada shared the news with fans on Instagram Monday morning.

“After the most beautiful 3 years, my time at Disney Animation has come to an end. I love this place and all the people in it, but it’s now time to keep growing”

Joining Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2019, Carlos López Estrada worked at Walt Disney Animation Studios on Frozen II, directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, and recently as co-director on Raya and the Last Dragon, alongside Don Hall.

It is unknown at this time if the director will stay on board Walt Disney Studios’ Bambi remake, which has yet to get an official greenlight, as Disney was working on some internal things on the project. He was also set to direct an original animated film (tentatively titled Foster) at Disney, which already has a script, storyboards, and music, set for release in November 2023. A new director will most likely come on board to take over directing duties, but we likely won’t get an update on that until Disney’s D23 Expo, this September.

Raya and the Last Dragon, now streaming on Disney+, takes us on an exciting, epic journey to the fantasy world of Kumandra, where Raya, a lone warrior, must track down the legendary last dragon to stop an evil force that has returned after 500 years to once again threaten her homeworld. The film features an outstanding voice cast, including Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Izaac Wang, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Benedict Wong, Jona Xiao, Sandra Oh, Thalia Tran, Lucille Soong, Alan Tudyk, Gordon Ip, Dichen Lachman, Patti Harrison, Jon “Dumbfoundead” Park, Sung Kang, Sierra Katow, Ross Butler, François Chau and Paul Yen.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

Lindsey Beer Has Turned Her Script For The Live-Action ‘Bambi’ Remake to Disney

Back in early 2020, reports surfaced that Disney would be giving Bambi the live-action remake treatment. Since then, news on the project has been very quiet, and with the Covid-19 pandemic shutting down Hollywood months later, Bambi appeared to be on hold, until now.

Buried in a story on writer Lindsey Beer over at Deadline, the trade revealed that Beer recently turned a draft for a remake of Bambi for Disney. Lindsey Beer has been attached to the project since the initial report alongside Captain Marvel writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who also turned in a draft to Disney.

What will a Bambi remake look like?

Disney’s Bambi remake is viewed as a companion piece to films like The Jungle Book and The Lion King and is expected to use the same technology. Disney is cognizant that Bambi is less epic in scope and story and is not aiming to shoehorn a larger narrative onto the classic tale.

Other live-action remakes in various stages of development at the studio include The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Hercules, Lilo & Stitch, Tangled, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Robin Hood, and The Lion King prequel. Peter Pan & Wendy and Pinocchio are set to debut later this year on Disney+. Rumblings of spin-offs from Mulan and others are rumored.

Released in 1942, Walt Disney’s Bambi follows a young deer named Bambi who joins his new friends, a rabbit named Thumper, and a skunk named Flower, in exploring his forest home.

News:

Sarah Polley In Talks To Direct Live-Action ‘Bambi’ For Disney

EXCLUSIVE: After winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Women Talking, Sarah Polley is on to the most epic undertaking of her filmmaking career thus far, as Deadline understands that the filmmaker is in talks to helm a live-action take on Bambi in very early development at Disney.

Multiple sources tell Deadline that the project is a musical to feature music from six-time Grammy-winning country star Kacey Musgraves. Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster (Transparent) wrote the most recent draft of the script, and Chris and Paul Weitz’s Depth of Field will produce.

The studio first signaled its intention to adapt Bambi for live-action back in early 2020, bringing Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer aboard as writers and Depth of Field to produce in January of that year. No word yet on when the project might be put in motion, given unpredictable strike conditions, for starters.

The film is of course the coming-of-age story of Bambi, the young deer struck by tragedy who counts amongst his woodland pals — the rabbit Thumper and a skunk named Flower. An adaptation of Felix Salten’s 1923 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods, released by RKO Radio Pictures in 1942, the original Bambi was just the fifth animated feature ever to emerge from Disney. The film helmed by David Hand and assorted sequence directors grossed over $267M worldwide, landed Academy Award nominations for Best Sound, Song and Original Music Score, and has endured as a classic over the years, assuredly continuing to traumatize young viewers with its famous depiction of the death of Bambi’s mother to this day.

Pic was entered into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, given its cultural, historic and aesthetic significance, in December 2011.

Polley’s take on Bambi will be the latest in a long line of live-action films to adapt Disney’s classic animated features. The most recent installment in this series, which has done huge business fo the studio, is the Rob Marshall-helmed The Little Mermaid, which has grossed over $414M since bowing in theaters on May 26th. Polley will certainly be in good company if and when her deal for the project closes, joining a list of directors tapped by Disney for these films that also includes Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh, Niki Caro, Guy Ritchie, Tim Burton and Robert Zemeckis, to name only a few.

Polley’s acclaimed ensemble drama Women Talking, based on the novel by Miriam Toews, drew on the real 2010 story of a Bolivian Mennonite colony to examine the impossible choice grappled with by the women of an isolated religious community following numerous incidents of sexual assault by the men they thought they knew. Polley directed the film from her script, seeing it released by United Artists Releasing following its fall bow at Telluride. It also earned her Critics’ Choice and WGA Awards, a Golden Globe nomination and other major accolades.

Other directorial credits for Polley include the WGA Award and Cinema Eye Honors Award-winning documentary Stories We Tell, examining the family of storytellers of which she’s a part, and the acclaimed dramas Take This Waltz and Away from Her. She began her career as an actor, starting out as a child on films like The Adventures of Baron Munchausen before going on to star in titles like Dawn of the Dead, and is represented by WME, GGA in Canada, Circle of Confusion and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

E poi ci piacciono troppo i cerbiatti!
