TRON 3 Story Teased by Joseph Kosinski, Says Sequel Isn’t Dead

It’s been over six long years since TRON: Legacy hit theaters (see this author’s two-part set visit report HERE and HERE), and the last time we heard anything about a follow-up, it was Walt Disney Pictures pulling the plug on it in May of 2015, shortly after the failure of Tomorrowland. However, Collider just hosted a special IMAX screening of Legacy with director Joseph Kosinski in attendance, and the filmmaker gave away some TRON 3 story ideas he had before the studio took it off the grid.

“The movie was called, ‘TRON: Ascension,’ I think that’s out there,” Kosinski confirmed. “I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. We were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a good amount of distance from being ready to shoot it, but I think the script was in good shape. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a ‘Stranger in a Strange Land,’ trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.”

Kosinski also confirmed the logistical and financial considerations Disney made when it pulled the plug, while still leaving the door open to revive the project.

“I guess I can say that ‘TRON 3’ is in cryogenic freeze,” explained Kosinski. “So, it’s there. It’s not dead. It’s alive, but it’s sitting there, waiting for the right time to move forward. I mean, you have to remember that when we made ‘TRON: Legacy,’ Disney did not own Marvel. Disney did not own Lucasfilm…they own everything now. But this was before they owned everything, so from the studio point of view, they have a certain number of slots and a certain amount of money to make movies and if you can make a Star Wars spinoff or another Marvel movie, which are all doing incredibly well, a TRON movie, even though I think it would do very well, the question is: Would it do as well as one of those? That is more the reason we haven’t seen another TRON is that Disney stock is flushed with really successful properties right now. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see one at one point.”

Both Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were set to reprise their respective roles as Sam Flynn and Quorra in TRON: Ascension, with TRON: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski back at the helm. Original cast member Bruce Boxleitner was also set to come back in his dual role as Alan Bradley/Tron, although he has since soured on the idea. Cillian Murphy was rumored to return in a larger role from his cameo as Edward Dillinger, Jr., while trade reports suggested that Kosinski was keen on casting Academy Award winner Jared Leto in a key role. Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family) was hired to rewrite the initial screenplay by David DiGilio (Eight Below) before the film was halted.

Released in 1982, the original TRON underperformed at the box office, but it nonetheless managed to find an important place in pop culture over the next few decades. The sequel was scripted by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz from a story they developed with Brian Klugman and Lee Sternhal, based in turn on characters created by Bonnie MacBird and original TRON helmer Steven Lisberger. That film’s worldwide box office exceeded $400 million.

Da Comic Book Movie

TRON: LEGACY Director Joseph Kosinski Still Believes A Third TRON Movie Could Happen

In 2010, TRON: Legacy grossed $400 million on a $170 million budget, a box office haul which should have guaranteed a sequel. Production was even slated to begin in 2015, but Disney would pull the plug after Tomorrowland bombed and the studio got cold feet about pushing ahead with another ambitious sci-fi tentpole.

When ComicBook.com caught up with TRON: Legacy director John Kosinski, the filmmaker made it clear that he remains invested in making a sequel of some sort happen one day.

"There's always been an interest since Legacy [for a sequel]. There's always been talk and murmuring of doing another and continuing the story," he explained. "Like anything, it just needs the right confluence of...it's all about timing and the right elements and everything's got to come together for a movie to happen."

Noting that TRON remains a big part of the Disney brand thanks to the TRON Lightcycle Power Run which currently resides in Shanghai Disneyland and will debut in Orlando's Disney World next year, Kosinski pointed out that, "I don't ever see TRON being something where you pump one out every two years. You just can't. They're too hard to make."

"It's got to be a passion project and it's got to really be reaching for something different and innovative and ambitious," he concluded, "because that's in the DNA of it."

A TRON reboot was considered by Disney, as was a Disney+ TV show, but neither came to fruition.

Da The Disinsider

An Update on ‘Tron’ (Exclusive)

Over the course of the last year or so, we’ve received a lot of questions regarding Disney’s plans with the Tron franchise, and we figured we should update everyone with what’s going.

Earlier this year, it was revealed a Tron series from John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) for Disney+ was scrapped. It is unknown why the studio decided to scrap the project, we heard it was due to cost and Disney’s enthusiasm for bringing the world of Tron back to the big screen.

A couple of months back, our trusted source informed us that a Tron reboot with Jared Leto is still in the works with a director search underway. Now, that is not the most significant update I’ve heard. From what I’ve been told, the film is expected to be more of Tron sequel rather than a reboot, and the cast from Tron: Legacy could return. It is unknown at this time if the film will follow the same story as the canceled third Tron film, Tron: Ascension, which would have seen the machine world of The Grid invade the real world. That was also rumored to have featured a character called Ares.

Another question we are constantly asked is, will Daft Punk return to do the music? Daft Punk’s score was a highlight from Legacy, with their futuristic/electronic musical style helped bring the world to life.

We have heard multiple directors in the mix but nothing we can confirm as of yet.

While the original 1982 version of the film, starring Jeff Bridges, was met with a cult following, it’s 2010 sequel was met with mixed reviews. Despite bringing back Bridges, Tron: Legacy didn’t seem to resonate with critics, many stating the film and its characters lacked emotion and substance. However, the film was financially profitable for Disney, and it too has gained its own following, and fans have been clamoring for another film, and don’t worry… you’ll get one.

More is sure to come out, so stick with us and we’ll be sure to get you more information.

La notizia viene da DeadLine:

‘Lion’ Director Garth Davis To Direct Disney’s New ‘Tron’ Movie With Jared Leto

After taking its time figuring out where it wants the next Tron installment to go, Disney’s sci-fi franchise looks to have new life as we are hearing Garth Davis has been tapped to direct the pic starring Jared Leto.

Davis has been better known for his smaller art house films over the years like 2018’s Mary Magdalene and his critically acclaimed 2016 drama Lion, which received six Oscar nominations including for Best Picture. Tron would mark Davis’ first tentpole, and though he is not known for big-budget projects, insiders say Davis aggressively pursued the job, eventually winning over execs.

esse Wigutow wrote the most recent draft of the script. Leto is producing along with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.

The original 1982 film starring Jeff Bridges was set inside the computer program called the Grid, where a computer hacker is abducted and forced to participate in gladiatorial games. The film wasn’t a hit and received mixed reviews, even though its special effects were seen as game-changing at the time. The cult following that swelled around the film in years to come as it played on cable only helped grow its popularity, to the point where Disney decided to move forward with a sequel, Tron: Legacy, in 2010, with Bridges reprising his role and Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde joining the franchise.

That film did go on to have box office success, bringing in $400 million globally, but even so plans for a sequel were pushed while Disney figured out how to move the story forward. The studio eventually scrapped plans for a direct sequel to Tron: Legacy, and even after Leto attached himself in 2017 and has been taking their time in figuring out next steps for this project.

Davis coming on to the project signals the next installment may finally happen, but insiders still stress a greenlight has not been given. The film is still in development but Davis’ involvement is a push in the right direction for the future of the franchise.

Dal sito The Disinsider:

RUMOR: Jodie Turner-Smith Cast As Female Lead In Disney’s ‘Tron: Ares’

According to industry insider Daniel RPK, Jodie Turner-Smith has been cast as the female lead of the film. He revealed the news via his Patreon account early Friday.

That’s not all. RPK says that her character will apparently be named Athena. With the film believed to be titled Tron: Ares, we’re inclined to believe that Greek mythology will play a significant role in the story.

Turner-Smith is no newcomer but, with an appearance in Lucasfilm’s The Acolyte also in the pipeline, she appears poised for stardom.

She joins the previously announced Jared Leto and Cillian Murphy.

Now, because this has not been confirmed by Disney or any other major trade, as always we urge you to take it with a grain of salt. Due to RPK’s track record, however, we are inclined to believe that it is most likely true.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil director Joachim Rønning is attached to direct Tron: Ares, which is expected to begin filming in July and will shoot through October in Vancouver.

The script is written by Jesse Wigutow and is considered the sequel to Tron: Legacy, directed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. However, it is unclear if Jeff Bridges, Garett Hedlund, and/or Olivia Wilde, or any other characters from Tron: Legacy will return or appear in any capacity for Tron: Ares.

While it is unclear if Jeff Bridges, Garett Hedlund, and/or Olivia Wilde, or any other characters from Tron Legacy will return for the newest Tron film, we do know that Academy Award winner Jared Leto is still attached to star.

Dal sito The Hollywood Reporter:

‘Dahmer’ Star Evan Peters Joins Jared Leto in Disney’s ‘Tron 3’

Joachim Ronning, who helmed 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' and co-directed 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,' is directing the sci-fi adventure.

Welcome to the Grid, Evan Peters.

The actor, who generated acclaim for his portrayal of the title character in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, has closed a deal to star opposite Jared Leto in Tron: Ares, the third installment of Disney’s technology-pushing movie series.

Joachim Ronning is directing the feature that is due to begin shooting August in Vancouver. Getting filming off the ground would be a coup for the studio, which has been trying to make a Tron 3 for over a decade and turn Tron into a bona fide brand and franchise.

Disney released the original Tron in 1982, with Jeff Bridges starring as video game designer Kevin Flynn, who is transported inside his own creation and teams up with Tron, a security program played by Bruce Boxleitner. The film was not considered a box office success but did earn two Oscar nominations. Ironically, neither was for visual effects, which is one of the aspects the movie became known for as it went on to become a cult hit.

The studio finally made a sequel in 2010, Tron: Legacy, which was directed by future Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski. That one starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and brought back Bridges. That movie, too, didn’t exactly light up the box office like the studio hoped, although it once again pushed visual effects as well as de-aging technology.

A sequel to Legacy had been in the works on and off, with the Legacy characters earmarked to return. Eventually, that was scrapped and a new direction was set.

While the two previous movies were largely set inside the world of computers and programs, the script for Ares, written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, is said to focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.

Leto, who has been attached to the project for several years, is to play Ares, the manifestation of the program.

It is unclear who Peters would play although the script calls for a soldier in the computer world and an awkward gamer in the human world.

Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing. Russell Allen is executive producing.

Peters came to many moviegoers’ attention thanks to a memorable part in Bryan Singer’s well-regarded X-Men: Days of Future Past where he played Peter Maximoff, aka the speedy hero known as Quicksilver, whom he reprised in the not-so-well-regarded X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

It’s in his TV work that he has shown his chops, however, whether it’s being part of the Ryan Murphy repertory in multiple seasons of horror anthology American Horror Story or appearing in HBO’s Mare of Easttown, the latter winning him an Emmy in the outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie category.

He earned high marks for his portrayal of serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer in the Murphy-produced true crime series and is expected to be a major player in the Emmy race now underway. Monster became Netflix’s second-most-watched series of all time when it was released last fall, and Peters won a Golden Globe for best actor in a miniseries or television film.

Peters is repped by CAA and Johnson Shapiro.

Sempre da The Hollywood Reporter:

‘Tron’ Creator Says He’s Taking an Obi-Wan-like Role Behind the Scenes of Third Movie

Writer-director Steven Lisberger tells The Hollywood Reporter's 'It Happened in Hollywood' podcast that the 1982 original was so advanced, "We were even ahead of Steve Jobs."

As Disney ramps up production on the long-gestating Tron 3, aka Tron: Ares — adding Dahmer star Evan Peters to the threequel — the godfather of the Tron universe has given the undertaking his blessing.

Stopping by The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast, Steven Lisberger — writer/director of 1982’s groundbreaking Tron — says he’s taken on a Jedi Master role in advising the next generation of Tron filmmakers, to borrow from another sci-fi franchise.

“The Tron team is hard at work,” says Lisberger, 72. “They are always hard at work. It’s going to happen. My goal with these things in playing the Obi-Wan role is to say the one sentence that has an impact. I try to say something that is useful to them without getting into the weeds.”

Lisberger recalls seeking out the advice of animation elders when embarking on making the original, technically dizzying film.

“We shot a storyboard movie on Tron 1. One of Disney’s Nine Old Men was still out at the studio,” he recalls. “I was so excited to show it to him because lord knows I could have used a mentor at that point. I showed him our storyboard movie. He sat there, he watched the whole thing, and then he turned to me and said, ‘Kid — you’re on your own.’ And got up and walked out of the room.”

“So I’m trying to keep my input down to sentences but hopefully sentences that are some use to them,” he adds.

While it currently enjoys cult status and admiration among science-fiction enthusiasts, futurists and gamers alike, the original Tron debuted to muted reception, taking in $4 million on its opening weekend and going on to gross $33 million domestically on a $20 million budget.

“Some people at the studio got too excited and compared it to Star Wars,” says Lisberger. “Star Wars was dripping in nostalgia. Tron was completely avant garde. It came out at the wrong time.

“It went up against E.T. It was a little bit like the world was headed to E.T. and that was very touchy-feely and we became that computer film that didn’t appreciate the human condition. That was a problem. As time plays out, the significance of the film continues to rise. Every so often something gets made, it’s too far ahead of its time and then it takes years for it to be accepted or find its legs. That’s what happened with Tron,” he explains.

While concepts explored by the film — everything from computer security to artificial intelligence is explored — are now commonplace, it wasn’t so at the time of the film’s release.

“People do not remember how much backlash there was to computers in the early ’80s,” says Lisberger. “We were even ahead of Steve Jobs at this point. People didn’t know what the internet was. The networking that’s in the story of Tron and is suggested in the last scene, that was based on the ARPANET,” he adds, referring to the U.S. military-based internet precursor.

Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is set to begin directing Tron: Ares in Vancouver in August.
