New Image from “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and Grappling with “Aurora Moving Out”

Disney made a surprising killing back in 2014 when they released Maleficent. The live-action retelling of the Sleeping Beauty story was arguably one of the reasons that we are getting all of the live-action remakes today. The movie made over $750 at the worldwide box office and Disney has been talking about a sequel for years. This year we are finally getting one and USA Today has a new image and director Joachim Rønning giving us a hint about the dynamic that we can expect.

“Aurora is basically moving out. That’s something I and a lot of parents can relate to,” says Ronning, adding that Pfeiffer is one of the few people who can “hold their own” against Jolie, “especially when she puts on the horns.”

If there is one thing that is going to make this movie a lot of fun it’s going to be seeing Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer try to out “Queen Bitch” each other. These are two ladies that can operate on an entirely different level so seeing how they play off of each other when they are both trying to be more camp than the other should be a ton of fun to watch.

Summary: The complex relationship of Maleficent and Aurora continues to be explored as they face new threats to the magical land of the Moors.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, directed by Joachim Rønning, stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Ed Skrein, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Jenn Murray. It will be released on October 18, 2019.

Traduzione:

MALEFICENT

Maleficent Mistress of Evil is next. Angelina Jolie takes the stage. "Now, in this one, we return and we see that Aurora is older and they're facing the world and challenges of the world and it is being emphasized to them how different they are," she said. "They are encouraged to not be a family andp ulled apart by their differences. We really pose the question and fight for the belief that what is different makes you stronger. What is family and what defines family is what you believe in."

"I was really excited to work with these two," Michelle Pfeiffer said. The rest of the cast share their enthusiasm for working on the movie. They have an "exclusive clip" to share.

In the clip, Maleficent meets with Aurora. "Do not ask me to marry him," Aurora insists. Maleficent simply says, "No." She says love doesn't always end well. Her horns and armor are gold.Later, they head into the castle, and now Maleficent is in black, walking with a cane into a festive, royal dining hall. The groom greets her. The King and Queen seem nervous but welcome her. Servants set the napkins on laps and fppd os servedin a tense setting. Maleficent gets a roasteed chicken... "Bird, delicious," she says ominously.

The queen questions how Aurora became Queen. "That castle was never my home," Aurora says of her father's castle. "It was given to the people." The queen asks if her father died or was killed -- to which Maleficent tells her, "Both." The queen recalls the story of a baby being killed and the King can't fathom it. Maleficent explains there are fairies missing, stolen by human poachers. The King says he does not know of it. Questions of accusations are tossed around. The entire setting is extravagant and royal. The Queen changes th etopic and promises Aurora will "finally get the love of a real mother" which gets Maleficent triggered. "I consideer Aurora my own," she says. Aurora rises up, glows green, and sends out energetic attacks. They leave, now.

Later, Chiwetel Ejiofor is seen with horns coming from his head. Shots in the woods of him and other sflying. There is an entire army. Maleficent is ready to go to war.

Notizie:

Angelina Jolie made her second appearance (the first being The Eternals) for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. “In the sequel, differences are being pointed out and it’s about the idea of family and what defines family,” she said. Michelle Pfeiffer, Elle Fanning, and Chiwetel Ejiofor then joined the panel.

Ejiofor will be playing Maleficent’s dark fae brother. They released a clip that shows a very head-on confrontation between The Queen and Maleficent. The sequel will show a war between the humans and the fae.

Dal sito Looper:

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil footage, poster unveiled at D23

It's time to head back into the Moors.

The upcoming sequel to 2014's Maleficent, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, has some new footage — which was revealed to the audience at Disney's D23 Expo on Saturday, August 24.

Angelina Jolie, who plays the striking title character, gave attendees some insight as to what can be expected from the 2019 film (via ComicBook.com). She shared, "Now, in this one, we return and we see that Aurora is older and they're facing the world and challenges of the world and it is being emphasized to them how different they are. They are encouraged to not be a family and pulled apart by their differences. We really pose the question and fight for the belief that what is different makes you stronger. What is family and what defines family is what you believe in."

As for the footage, most of it takes place at the palace dinner seen in the film's official trailer. Everyone is nervous, it seems, and things only become more tense when Maleficent is served a roasted chicken. "Bird, delicious," she says with an eerie tone.

Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) then sets into a line of questioning that makes everyone uncomfortable — particularly Maleficent. She wonders how Aurora (Elle Fanning) became Queen, and whether her father died or was killed. "Both," Maleficent says.

Things go back and forth between the Queen and Maleficent, with polite accusations flying in regard to human and fairy lives. Eventually, the Queen says that Aurora will "finally get the love of a real mother," which sets Maleficent off.

Later, footage reveals Connal (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and others flying through the woods, forming an army that Maleficent will lead.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil picks up a few years after the events of Maleficent, with Maleficent and Aurora already in an established mother-daughter type relationship. Things become strained when Aurora agrees to marry Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson), a union that Maleficent does not approve of. According to ComicBook.com, "The film continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within."

Along with the new footage, a new poster for the film was also revealed. The one-sheet pits Maleficent and Connal opposite Queen Ingrith and King John (Robert Lindsay). Between them are Aurora and Prince Phillip — the centerpieces of the inevitable war.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will arrive in theaters on October 18.

Maleficent 2 star Michelle Pfeiffer reveals Queen Ingrith's villainous plan

"The ends justify the means."

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil star Michelle Pfeiffer has revealed Queen Ingrith's villainous plan.

The trailers to date for the Disney sequel have teased that maybe it'll be Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) going full-evil, but it seems that Queen Ingrith, the mother of Prince Phillip, will be the real villain.

But it all depends on your viewpoint...

"Phillip's been wanting to marry Aurora for a long time, and now I've figured out a way to make this all work towards my master plan. Her sole purpose is to protect her people, and for her, the ends justify the means," Pfeiffer told Disney twenty-three magazine.

Queen Ingrith is motivated by the tragic death of her brother, who she believes was killed by one of the enchanted forest's creatures.

"She has a fear of the unknown," explained director Joachim Rønning. "And that fear translates to aggression, with attack being her best defence."

It seems that Queen Ingrith will be taking inspiration from King Stefan in the first movie. He managed to sever Maleficent's wings with iron (fairies' "kryptonite"), and the Queen has her "wonderfully strange, but brilliant" engineer Gerda (Jenn Murray) to help.

"She's psychotic with this still, cold exterior that gives the sense that she has no conscience whatsoever. The perfect executor of my evil plan for all dominance," teased Pfeiffer.

Chilling.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is released on October 18.

'Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil': Princess Aurora Is Strong But In A Different Way

Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) will be a little different in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” In a recent interview, Fanning teased some details about her character and talked about how she has a strength about her.

The main plot of the sequel revolves around Princess Aurora getting married. In an interview with "Good Morning America," Fanning said that it was “really special” to revisit her character and show a “new chapter” in the character’s life. The princess is actually the queen of the Moors in the film, but that’s not the only change in her.

Fanning explained that her character has gained power over the years and she has become a little more independent. However, what is even more significant is that she is becoming who she wants to be as an individual.

Aurora is able to make many of her decisions on her own now, according to Fanning. One of those decisions will be to say yes to Prince Phillip (Harris Dickinson) when he asks her to marry him in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” The trailer of the film has already teased how the proposal goes, and how Angelina Jolie’s character responds to it.

Fanning pointed out that in many of the Disney films a princess is given a sword and armor in the sequel to show that she has strength. That is not the case with the upcoming film. The actress explained that her character wants to get married and have a family, which too shows strength. There is a strength in Aurora’s femininity and softness, Fanning explained.

That strength will be significant as Aurora and Phillip are stuck in the middle while the fairies and the humans go to war. The new poster of the film also teased this predicament of the two characters.

“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” has been directed by Joachim Rønning. The film will be released on Oct. 18.

Box Office: Can 'Maleficent 2' Avoid The Curse Of The 5 Years Later Sequel?

Looking at the next few months of "big" movies, there are some relative certainties. It Chapter Two is going to be a box office monster even if it doesn't approach the ridiculous $327 million domestic/$700 million worldwide cume of the first It. Joker is probably going to be pretty big, whether that's "big for a $55 million, R-rated crime melodrama" (think Shazam or The Nun numbers) or "just plain big" (think Logan or Venom). But, barring a surprise or two, the other big movie of the September/October season will be Walt Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The sequel to the summer-of-2014 blockbuster was originally slated for May 29, 2020 (six years to the day of the first movie) but got bumped up to October 18 of this year.

To the extent that Disney even bothered bringing it into 2019, I'd argue it was about having one more big IP title available for Disney+ streaming sometime next year as (intentional or not), that's the end result of Disney's absurdly stacked 2019 slate. Whether Joachim Rønning's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil can come anywhere near the $242 million domestic/$758 million worldwide gross of the first film is dependent on a few variables. First of all, it should be noted that the three-biggest October releases, by a lot, remain The Martian ($630 million in 2015), Gravity's ($724 million in 2013) and Venom ($854 million in 2018). Second, we don't know whether audiences care about another go-around with Angelina Jolie as the Sleeping Beauty villain-turned-anti-hero. Third, it's been over five years since Maleficent.

We've seen a number of "five years later" sequels come and go (as in disappoint or outright flop) over the last year and change. Pacific Rim: Uprising opened 4.5 years after Pacific Rim ($411 million in 2013) and earned just $290 million worldwide on a $150 million budget. Godzilla: King of the Monsters came out five years after Godzilla and earned just $385 million on a $170 million budget, versus $529 million in 2014. Ditto Warner Bros.' The LEGO Movie 2, which (despite being a good sequel to a good predecessor) earned just $191 million worldwide compared to $431 million five years earlier. Even Disney got dinged in 2016, when its six-years-later sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass earned 71% less than Alice in Wonderland's $1.025 billion gross.

The one exception is DreamWorks Animation and Universal's How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which earned $160 million domestic and $519 million worldwide compared to the $177 million/$624 million totals of How to Train Your Dragon 2. The difference, and this points to why a number of kid-flick sequels have stumbled over the last few years, is that Universal sold the film on the quality of the first two with an emphasis on generational nostalgia and the notion that the third Hiccup/Toothless adventure would be the emotional finale for the series. In other words, unlike Universal's The Secret Life of Pets 2, they made this animated sequel cool for kids, parents and older audiences who didn't need to take the kids.

That's, among other factors (the previous film not being good, the curiosity factor fading away, etc.), what befuddled the likes of The LEGO Movie 2, The Angry Birds Movie 2 and (three years ago) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. The first films in those respective franchises, along with Illumination's Pets, were successfully sold as animated features that were cool or (relatively speaking) four-quadrant event flicks for kids and adults. Conversely, fair or not, their respective (and often superior) sequels were greeted as "just for kids." Ditto Maleficent, which was greeted as a big fantasy flick for girls and women (and interested parties who happened to be male), and its "I Spit on Your Grave for kids" pitch played as a four-quadrant fantasy biggie.

I don't know if Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is better than its "salvaged in re-shoots and post-production" predecessor, but if audiences still delight at the idea of Jolie playing a "still a bit evil" variation on Maleficent, then they will still show up. However, if it was a one-time-curiosity, or if the sequel is received as strictly kid-fare, well, that's not good. The industry isn't quite as lite on female-driven biggies as they were even in the summer of The Fault in Our Stars and Lucy, although Jolie hasn't starred in a "big" movie since Maleficent. Whether five years is too late for anther turn-at-bat is about if the film is seen as "cool" not just by young kids, but by teens and grown ups.

I expect Disney to emphasize not just Maleficent being wicked but also squaring off with Michelle Pfeiffer as Prince Phillips' mother in a kind of supernatural Disney fantasy variation on Meet the Fockers (or Shrek 2). Whether Maleficent: Mistress of Evil becomes a hit is less an issue for Disney's bottom line (they have Frozen II and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on tap) and more about whether these "live action versions of classic Disney toons" can justify sequels. If it scores even Cinderella ($519 million in 2015) numbers, then a potential Jungle Book 2 or Aladdin 2 look that much more enticing. The key besting the "five-years-later-sequel" curse is in making sure Maleficent: Mistress of Evil still looks "cool" to older kids and adults.

Altro articolo, sempre dal sito Forbes_

Disney Needs 'Maleficent 2' To Be A Hit To Help Sell 'Frozen II' And 'Star Wars IX'

I wrote a post a couple of months ago arguing that Disney should hold off on debuting a new trailer for either Frozen II or Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker until the October 18 opening weekend of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The reasoning was simple, namely that the Angelina Jolie sequel is something of a question mark and that even a token uptick in theatrical viewership over opening weekend, due to temporarily exclusive new looks at the two big year-end Disney sequels, would be of value. Now that said, looking at the rest of the year, the opposite may be true as well. Presuming it performs halfway decently, it’ll also be the only new game in town to theatrically advertise Frozen II and Star Wars IX.

I don’t think Disney moved the fairy tale flick from May 29, 2020 (six years to the day of the first Maleficent) to October 18, 2019 to provide a theatrical launching pad for trailers for two upcoming Disney biggies. I’d argue it was partially about getting another big IP flick into theaters in 2019 so that it could debut on Disney+ over the next year. If we're pessimistic, we can argue that Disney knew the potentially tardy sequel to a film that was a critical bust/commercial smash ($758 million worldwide) was as much of a likely commercial miss as Dumbo ($350 million). Thus, better to put it out in a year where Disney is already crushing all comers thanks to (among others) Avengers: Endgame, Toy Story 4, The Lion King and Aladdin.

Imagine, if you will, how much worse it would have looked for Disney had Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur bombed not over Thanksgiving of 2015 but in May of 2014 as was the original release. It would have been a stunning summer whiff and would have severely changed the narrative in terms of Disney’s eventual dominance. However, cushioned as it was in between Inside Out ($856 million global) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.068 billion worldwide), The Good Dinosaur was mere trivia. Heck, I’d argue the one-two-three punch of Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.405 billion), Inside Out and Star Wars VII essentially papered over the otherwise disastrous runs of Tomorrowland ($209 million on a $190 million budget) and The Good Dinosaur ($332 million on a $175 million budget), but I digress.

Let’s be optimistic and argue that Disney didn’t push Maleficent 2 up by seven months to give it a safe place to die. Presuming that Disney expects the film to succeed, it also offers something that nothing else between now and late November will provide: a family-friendly movie with which to market the Frozen sequel (due November 22) and the Star Wars finale (opening December 20). If Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which pits Angelina Jolie against Michelle Pfeiffer, breaks out in October, part of the reason will be that it’ll be the first big kid flick since The Lion King in mid-July. I too wish more folks had seen Dora and the Lost City of Gold, The Angry Birds Movie 2 and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, but they didn’t.

Moreover, along with standing out from the pack amid a flurry of R-rated or adult-skewing movies, it’ll also be the only appropriate place to trailer the next two Disney biggies. There’s no law saying that Disney must debut trailers for big Disney movies alongside the opening weekends of other big Disney movies. Moreover, Disney could just say “To heck with it” and drop the third Frozen II trailer during Good Morning America in early September along with the standard “drop the last Star Wars trailer during Monday Night Football in mid-October” playbook. Regardless of where those trailers first show up, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil presents an oasis for a captive audience of Disney-friendly and family-friendly moviegoers. Because other than Maleficent 2, almost the entire pre-Thanksgiving slate is for adults.

The Fall season kicks off a week from today with It Chapter Two, a 2.75-hour, R-rated horror drama about adults returning to their hometown to defeat an ancient evil. It will be followed by STX’s R-rated “strippers stick it to their rich, Wall Street clients” comedy Hustlers and Warner Bros.’ R-rated drama (yes, Hollywood still makes those) The Goldfinch on September 12. September 19 brings Sylvester Stallone’s R-rated Rambo: Last Blood, the PG-rated (but aimed at your parents) Downton Abbey and Brad Pitt’s PG-13 (but, again, adult-skewing) sci-fi drama Ad Astra. Considering how vital that James Gray sci-fi flick is to Fox/Disney, I wouldn’t be shocked if we get one of the big trailers attached to that film’s debut. However, that will be a pitch to grownups as opposed to kids.

Ditto Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Abominable on September 27. Abominable would be a demographically appropriate spot for the third Frozen II trailer provided the animated melodrama brings a big enough audience. Between Abominable and Maleficent 2, you’ve got WB’s R-rated Joker, Paramount’s PG-13 Will Smith vs. Will Smith actioner Gemini Man and United Artists’ questionable Addams Family toon. Unless Abominable breaks out, the Disney sequel will be the first movie to presumably snag a considerable audience of kids and audience for theatrical marketing. Almost everything between Maleficent 2 and Frozen 2 (Zombieland 2: Double Tap, Terminator: Dark Fate, Doctor Sleep, Ford v. Ferrari, etc.) is R-rated and/or adult-skewing. If Disney wants a movie which will be seen by (hopefully) lots of families, to theatrically sell the next two Disney biggies, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is it.

Three of the biggest movies between now and November 22 will (likely) be Warner Bros.’ two R-rated killer clown movies and Paramount’s R-rated killer robot movie. That may be what lets Maleficent: Mistress of Evil overcome at least some “five-years-later” indifference. Spider-Man: Homecoming, Frozen and even Suicide Squad (which dropped by 68% in weekend two and then stuck around as the last biggie of summer) benefited from being the proverbial “only game in town” for big kid-friendly movies. The variable which could make Maleficent 2 stick out may also be what makes it useful to Star Wars IX and Frozen II’s respective theatrical marketing campaigns. Those films’ trailers may be helpful in slightly goosing Maleficent 2’s opening weekend. Conversely, in terms of theatrically pitching to kids and adults, where else are they going to go?

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil May Have A Much Lower Box Office Opening Than First Movie

How much will Angelina Jolie's Maleficent sequel make in its box office opening? An early forecast is in, and it's quite a bit lower than the first movie's opening weekend in 2014. That doesn't mean the prediction is accurate, but there are some fair reasons to think Maleficent: Mistress of Evil may not quite rule fall 2019.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil opens October 18, the same day we get Zombieland 2: Double Tap. Sequel vs. sequel.

Box Office Pro has an early forecast out for Maleficent 2 to have a domestic opening of $30-50 million. They settled on a prediction of about $37 million. The first movie had a $69 million opening weekend in late May 2014. So $69M to $37M would be quite a drop, if even close to accurate. But these numbers are called "early" and "predictions" and "forecasts" for good reason. (For the record, the site has Zombieland 2 opening around $30 million.)

When the first Maleficent came out in 2014, its fresh take on Sleeping Beauty was a big hit, especially at the foreign box office. Check out the numbers, per Box Office Mojo:

Maleficent
Opening weekend: $69,431,298
Domestic: $241,410,378
Foreign: $517,129,407
Worldwide: $758,539,785

Critics were iffy on Maleficent, and the movie has a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 264 critics. Fans gave it a 70% audience score from 175,794 users, and an A CinemaScore from moviegoers polled opening night.

So if the fans like the sequel, too, that word-of-mouth could certainly go a long way. That said, it has been five years since the first movie. Is there a widespread clamoring to see what happens next? Maleficent has a big fan base, but it's not exactly Toy Story. Also, for comparison, Disney's live-action Alice in Wonderland movie made over $1 billion in 2010 but the sequel came out six years later and dropped 77% from the total, only making just under $300M worldwide.

Also, competition may be a factor. Not only is Zombieland 2 opening the same day as Maleficent 2, The Addams Family will have had a head start on October 11. That film is taking advantage of the Columbus Day holiday, no school for kids, and that's something Mistress of Evil won't be able to capitalize on.

Plus, I wouldn't say it's forgotten -- I have seen a trailer air on TV -- but I do feel like the new Maleficent movie is one of Disney's more overlooked projects for 2019. I was very surprised when it was moved from May 2020 to this year's already very crowded and competitive calendar. Disney already had The Lion King, Aladdin, Toy Story 4, and Dumbo, with Frozen 2 still to come. Some box office analysts are predicting 2020 will be a bad year at the movies, and just from here I'm wondering why half of 2019's crop didn't just wait a few months.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil could surprise these box office prognosticators by being an even bigger hit than the first film. Angelina Jolie is still a major star -- soon to be a major MCU star -- and so many young fans adored Maleficent. There is definitely a passionate fan base eager for this movie, it's just a matter of how many other fans will join them for opening weekend. And the prediction was just for the domestic opening, not the foreign markets -- which saved Dumbo's butt earlier this year and would surely do the same if needed for Maleficent 2.

Here's more on the plot to Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which co-stars Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora and Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith, plus Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. Harris Dickinson is now playing Prince Phillip in a recasting from the first movie. How much do you think Maleficent will make in its opening? Vote in the poll below.

Disney Debuts New ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ Posters

We are just a little over a month away from the release of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, so of course Disney is ramping up their marketing push, and by doing so, they released brand new characters posters for the highly anticipated sequel.

The posters give us some great looks at Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent, Elle Fanning’s Aurora, Michelle Pfieffer’s Queen Ingrith, and Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Connal, who is the same species as Maleficent. We also get a glimpse at some of the supporting characters in the background.

As reported over the weekend, the film is long range tracking to make $30-$50 million in its opening weekend at the box office. We bet that number will begin to rise significantly with the marketing push coming, and the fact that trailers have been pretty positive amongst fans on social media.

The years have been kind to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and ultimately love, has flourished. Yet the hatred between man and the fairies still exists. Aurora’s impending marriage to Prince Phillip is cause for celebration in the kingdom of Ulstead and the neighboring Moors, as the wedding serves to unite the two worlds. When an unexpected encounter introduces a powerful new alliance, Maleficent and Aurora are pulled apart to opposing sides in a Great War, testing their loyalties and causing them to question whether they can truly be family.

Directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) the film also stars Ed Skrein (Deadpool), and Robert Lindsay, and Harris Dickinson joins as Prince Phillip, replacing the original films Brenton Thwaites. Additional cast members returning from the 2014 film include: Sam Riley as Diaval; Imelda Staunton as the pixie Knotgrass; Juno Temple as the pixie Thistlewit; and Lesley Manville as the pixie Flittle.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is set to hit theaters on October 18, 2019.
