‘Chronicles of Prydain’ Movie in the Works at Disney (EXCLUSIVE)
Disney has acquired movie rights to the fantasy series “The Chronicles of Prydain” and is in early development on the project, Variety has learned.
The five novels by Lloyd Alexander, based on Welsh mythology, were published annually from 1964 to 1968 and followed the protagonist Taran from youth to maturity. He’s an assistant pig-keeper but initially dreams of being a grand hero.
The books are set in the magical land of Prydain, which resembles ancient Wales and is engaged in a series of battles with Annuvin, the Land of Death.
Other key characters are the young princess Eilonwy, the bard Fflewddur Fflam and a wild creature named Gurgi.
The books are “The Book of Three,” “The Black Cauldron,” “The Castle Llyr,” “Taran Wanderer” and “The High King.” The final book won the John Newbery Medal, given by the Association for Library Service to Children.
Sam Dickerman is the Disney executive on the project, which has not yet been set with a producer, director or writer.
The first two books in the series served as the basis for Disney’s 1985 animated fantasy movie “The Black Cauldron,” in which a Horned King sought to secure an ancient magical cauldron that would aid him in his desire to conquer the world.
The film, directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich, was the first Disney animated film to include computer-generated imagery. The movie, which carried a $44 million budget, failed to generate significant interest, with a $21 million domestic gross, and was not distributed as a home video release for more than a decade.

"The Chronicles" Rebooted
Oh my.
Disney has acquired movie rights to the fantasy series “The Chronicles of Prydain” and is in early development on the project, Variety has learned.

I spent two years of my life working on the animated version ... with nothing to show for it since I was thrown off the picture, along with people more talented than I am.
So apparently Diz Co. is on to something new.
The company is not only remaking animated hits, but it's trying its hand at redoing animated flops. (Who knows? The corporate brainwave might bear fruit.)
Considering the current trend of one or two of these remakes arriving every year, plus the queue of other projects in development — everything from a proper Black Cauldron film to a movie based on the “Night at Bald Mountain” section of Fantasia — Bailey and his team of executives and artists will have plenty of fuel for years, maybe decades, of remakes to come.

Skyler Shuler: Disney is already doing Sword in the Stone and Black Cauldron.
Q: In the OP's defense Disney hasn't publicized that one much yet so most people likely don't know it's happening.
Skyler Shuler: Stand by.
Inoltre il sito The Disinsider:
Q: After Mulan, what live-action adaptations should we expect moving forward the quickest?
The DisInsider: Black Cauldron and Hercules.

Skyler Shuler @Skylerhxc: Shouldn’t be any lighter than the animated film.

Disney May Be Considering A Live-Action Remake Of The Black Cauldron
It was recently revealed that Disney's Robin Hood was next in line for the live-action treatment, but we're hearing that the Mouse House may also be considering a new take on The Black Cauldron.
A notorious flop, the 1985 fantasy adventure has long been considered the black sheep of Disney's animated library, but our source indicates that the studio may have decided to revisit the property amid renewed interest in the fantasy genre, and could look into re-adapting Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain.
Whether that would be for the big screen or Disney+ is not clear at this point, but even if this is something Disney is considering, it sounds like it's very early days.
Live-Action Adaptation Of ‘The Black Cauldron’ In The Works At Disney
Disney is beginning work on yet another live-action adaptation of one of their classic films. According to insider Daniel Richtman, a live-action version of The Black Cauldron is in the works.
Released in 1985, The Black Cauldron is set in the mythical land of Prydain during the Early Middle Ages, the film centers on the evil Horned King who hopes to secure an ancient magical cauldron that will aid him in his desire to conquer the world. He is opposed by a young pig keeper named Taran, the young princess Eilonwy, the bard Fflewddur Fflam, and a wild creature named Gurgi who seek to destroy the cauldron, to prevent the Horned King from ruling the world.
The film was the first Disney animated feature to receive a PG rating as well as the first Disney animated film to feature computer-generated imagery. At the time, the movie was the most expensive animated film ever made.
Currently, there is no word on a potential creative team as the project is still in early development. Similarly, it is unknown who could star in the film. Disney has tried to assemble some star power for their live-action adaptations, so it is safe to assume they will do the same for The Black Cauldron.
