BREAKING: Walt Disney World and Disneyland Retheming Splash Mountain to “Princess and the Frog”
Disney Parks has just announced a retheming of Splash Mountain to “Princess and the Frog” in the wake of numerous petitions to change the attraction.
According to the OC Register, the popular log flume ride, previously themed to the controversial “Song of the South” film, will be transformed to feature characters and a storyline based off the 2009 animated film, “Princess and the Frog”.
No date or official name has been announced for the attraction makeovers. Both Disneyland and Walt Disney World intend on reopening with the current iterations of the ride, to be closed at a later date for the retheming.
Despite the coincidental timing with the trending petitions to reskin the ride, Disney states that development on the backstory reportedly began last year, settling on concepts just last summer. The next step for Imagineering will be to conduct digital scans of ride layouts at both parks.
Disney Parks Blog has also released some backstory on the new theming, as well as insight from the talented cast of “Princess and the Frog” and Imagineers like Charita Carter, who are leading the project:
Today we are thrilled to share a first glimpse of a project Imagineers have been working on since last year. Splash Mountain – at both Disneyland park in California and Magic Kingdom park in Florida – will soon be completely reimagined. The theme is inspired by an all-time favorite animated Disney film, “The Princess and the Frog.” We pick up this story after the final kiss, and join Princess Tiana and Louis on a musical adventure – featuring some of the powerful music from the film – as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras performance.
Tiana is a modern, courageous, and empowered woman, who pursues her dreams and never loses sight of what’s really important. It’s a great story with a strong lead character, set against the backdrop of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayou. In 1966, Walt himself opened New Orleans Square when it became the first new “land” added to Disneyland park, so it feels natural to link the story and the incredible music of “The Princess and the Frog” to our parks.
The voice of Princess Tiana and Tony Award-winning actress, Anika Noni Rose, shared, “It is really exciting to know that Princess Tiana’s presence in both Disneyland and Magic Kingdom will finally be fully realized! As passionate as I am about what we created, I know the fans are going to be over the moon. The Imagineers are giving us ‘The Princess and the Frog’ Mardi Gras celebration we’ve been waiting for, and I’m here for it!”
The approach to retheming or “plussing” attractions (as Walt Disney referred to it) begins with Imagineers asking the question, how can we build upon or elevate the experience and tell a fresh, relevant story? It’s a continuous process that Imagineers are deeply passionate about. And with this longstanding history of updating attractions and adding new magic, the retheming of Splash Mountain is of particular importance today. The new concept is inclusive – one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by, and it speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year.
Charita Carter, the senior creative producer leading the project at Walt Disney Imagineering shared, “Like Princess Tiana, I believe that courage and love are the key ingredients for wonderful adventures. I am delighted to be a part of bringing this fun-filled experience to our guests.”
So, what do you think of this new concept for Splash Mountain? While fan of the classic attraction will bemoan the loss of their laughin’ place, many beleaguered “Princess and the Frog” fans are eager to head on down to the bayou.

@Beast:

Anika Noni Rose says Splash Mountain's Princess and the Frog revamp will open in 2024
The Princess and the Frog voice actress said she is working with Disney on the remixed version of the classic attraction.
Anika Noni Rose says she'll continue the narrative of Princess Tiana when her Princess and the Frog rides open at Disney World and Disneyland.
The actress revealed for the first time an opening timeline for the long-gestating projects she's working on with Disney's creative team. She confirmed the group is deep into devising a re-theme of the classic Splash Mountain attractions, which the company previously announced would undergo extensive revamps to remove aesthetic elements lifted from 1946's Song of the South, a film that had long been accused of perpetuating racist stereotypes.
"They are making a ride — it'll be out in 2024," Rose said Thursday on Live With Kelly and Ryan. "I've been involved in the beginning, just talking about how we want it to be, what we want it to do, but, if I were to tell you anything else, I would be sucked into the ground and you'd never see me again."
According to a Disney spokesperson, "timing has not been determined" for opening the ride, though the company plans to share more details during the Essence Festival of Culture, which runs from June 30 through July 3 in New Orleans.
Disney first announced plans to overhaul the popular log flume attraction back in 2020, with a new storyline following Tiana (voiced by Rose in the 2009 film) while she plans a Mardi Gras celebration with Naveen (Bruno Campos) and Louis (Michael-Leon Wooley). Riders will float along colorful canals as original music inspired by the movie soundtracks the journey, with Tiana ultimately leading guests to a party filled with familiar faces from the film as well as new characters.
The Disney team also noted that they traveled to New Orleans to immerse themselves in the culture of the city and its history to incorporate it into the ride's look and feel, from sounds to visuals that connect with the film's locales.
Since opening its first iteration in 1989 at Disneyland in California, two more versions of Splash Mountain opened in 1992 at Disney parks around the world: one at Disney World in Florida, and another at Tokyo Disneyland in Japan.
The re-theme comes after Disney addressed backlash over its Jungle Cruise ride, eventually refurbishing the storied boat ride in 2021 to remove "negative depictions" of Native people.
The planned Princess and the Frog overhaul joins a growing list of major new additions hitting Disney properties, with Epcot opening its Guardians of the Galaxy–themed roller coaster last month ahead of a planned Moana-themed walk-through water attraction set to open at the park in the near future. Florida's Magic Kingdom park is also currently preparing a Tron roller coaster to premiere next to Space Mountain in the Tomorrowland section of the park, while Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Tokyo Disneyland will open their Frozen rides soon.
See concept art for the Splash Mountain re-theme above.
Bene!

Disney Reveals First Look at Splash Mountain Replacement Attraction Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
The new park experience — which was announced as a retooling of the old ride which had ties to the racist 1946 film 'Song of the South' — was teased Friday during Essence Fest in New Orleans.
Disney announced the name, arrival date and more details about its reimagined Splash Mountain ride on Friday during a special Essence Fest panel held at New Orleans’ Preservation Hall.
The revamped attraction, titled Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, will make its debut at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Disneyland in late 2024, according to the Disney Parks Blog. The new attraction, which celebrates the characters and real-world Louisiana setting of The Princess and the Frog, is a musical adventure inspired by the 2009 film and first animated Disney feature to star a Black princess.
The experience will pick up where the film left off, with riders joining the movie’s leading characters Princess Tiana, Naveen and the jazz-loving alligator Louis on a bayou adventure that sees the trio hosting a Mardi Gras celebration. Disney promises that the attraction will feature both new and familiar faces to the New Orleans-based universe, as well as original music inspired by songs from the movie.
In a video teasing the attraction, executive producer at Walt Disney Imagineering Charita Carter shares that the Imagineering and parks team pulled from a number of sources to help craft Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Faculty and experts from Xavier University, an HBCU institution, also consulted with the Imagineering team “about all aspects of culture for New Orleans,” Carter says.
The team who worked on the attraction also did a bayou tour, looking at details as specific as the flora and the fawna, and went to Avery Island and toured a salt dome to help them design the settings for the ride. Additionally, they visited Congo Square, where Carter says, “a lot of free people of color as well as enslaved people congregated and played music” and viewed a number of exhibits featuring set design and props to aid them in crafting an “authentic” ride experience.
Carter was among those voices featured on the Essence Fest panel, along with Ted Robledo, executive creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering and Stella Chase, daughter of the late chef Leah Chase, who inspired Tiana’s story.
This is one of the first major looks at the coming attraction, which was first announced back in 2020 amid the year’s anti-racism and racial justice protests, as well as ongoing petitions to have the ride changed were made. The decision to retool Splash Mountain, which has been criticized for its racist depictions tied to the 1946 film Song of the South — a movie Disney chairman and former CEO Bob Iger previously noted would not be available for purchase or to stream on Disney+.
Splash Mountain opened in 1989 and starred the character Br’er Rabbit — whose story is told by Song of the South character Uncle Remus, a Black man on a plantation in the Reconstruction-era South — on an adventure to avoid the clutches of Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear. Remus, written by white author Joel Chandler Harris, was at the time of the film’s release and through 2020 considered an example of a racist caricature.

Nuovo Artwork della coda all'attrazione.
