MGM Unveils Anti-Takeover Plan

Just in time for Halloween — the durable Addams Family is heading for another incarnation, this time as an MGM animated movie.

MGM is in final negotiations with BermanBraun’s Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun to produce an animated film based on the comedically macabre clan, based on the cartoons created by Charles Addams.

Pamela Pettler, whose credits include “Corpse Bride” and “Monster House,” has been signed to write the screenplay. The film will be exec produced by Andrew Mittman and Kevin Miserocchi.

The Addams Family originated in 150 single panel cartoons by Addams, about half of which were published in The New Yorker between 1938 and Addams’ death in 1988. The characters became famous through ABC’s sitcom, which ran for two seasons between 1964 and 1966 and led to several other TV series, two Paramount live-action films and most recently a Broadway musical.

Chris Meledandri’s Illumination had been developing a Tim Burton-helmed, stop-motion “The Addams Family” movie, but disclosed earlier this year that it had ditched the project.

MGM and BermanBraun announced in June that they had signed a first-look film deal as part of an overall pact to develop content across broadcast and cable.

BermanBraun’s roster of shows include NBC’s series “Camp,” HGTV’s “Garage Sale Wars” and Showtime’s “Polyamory.” The banner is also developing Ben Stiller’s “Rentaghost” at Fox and an adaptation of “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.”

BermanBraun also announced last week that it was teaming with AOL to overhaul the Moviefone service as a broader destination for entertainment news and content.

Robodog (Marza Animation Planet Inc.)

Chris Colfer and Ron Perlman Will Lend Their Voices to RoboDog

Golden Globe winners Chris Colfer ("Glee") and Ron Perlman (Hellboy) will lend their voices to Marza Animation Planet Inc.'s first original 3D CG animated film, RoboDog, to be directed by the Oscar-nominated Henry F. Anderson III (Gnomeo & Juliet), it was announced today by Marza's CEO, Masanao Maeda. Also revealed was a first look at the film's animated canine heroes, which you can check out at the bottom of this page.

Written by Robert Reece (The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning) and William Schneider, RoboDog is produced by Paul Wang (Astro Boy) and will be edited by studio veteran Tom Finan (Mr. Peabody & Sherman).

RoboDog is said to be a classic, heart-warming adventure story about an unlikely duo who couldn't be more different. KC (Kinetic Canine) (Colfer) is a bright, energetic but overzealous robotic dog, while Marshall (Perlman) is an old, curmudgeonly "real" dog, set in his ways and has little patience for anything new. This canine odd couple embarks on the adventure of a lifetime where each will learn the true nature of friendship, and not to judge a book by its cover.

"We are absolutely ecstatic that Chris has chosen 'RoboDog' as his first foray into animation. Coupled with Ron's extraordinary voiceover work, the duo's talent will make for great chemistry onscreen. Timeless Films is by far the perfect fit for the project due to their expertise in both producing and selling animated films overseas," said Maeda.

"We are thrilled to be working with Marza and the production team on this wonderfully original film and look forward to presenting it to all of our international distribution partners in Berlin," said Ralph Kamp, Chairman and CEO of Timeless Films.

"Chris and Ron are the perfect actors to play KC and Marshall as their voices exemplify the qualities of each character. Chris has an appealing, youthful voice which fits right in with our lead character, KC, who is above all a charismatic entertainer. Ron's voice demands authority, but also has a soft, vulnerable side which works very well for Marshall who comes across as a grouch, but is really a sensitive dog dealing with his past," said Anderson.

"The kid in me is barely being contained right now. I'm so happy to get the chance to work on my first animated film with this wonderful team," said Colfer.

Currently in pre-production with voiceover work set to start on February 1st, UK-based Timeless Films is handling international rights to the project, and will present it to buyers at next month’s European Film Market in Berlin.

The latest entry into the world of video game adaptations for the big screen may come as a bit of a surprise. Animation studio Rainmaker Entertainment and indie production company Blockade Entertainment are teaming up to create a 3D CG-animated feature based on PlayStation’s popular franchise, Sly Cooper. Written and directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT), the film follows the title character – a raccoon descended from a long line of thieves – along with his friends Bentley Turtle and Murray Hippo as they race to assemble pieces of a Cooper family heirloom. The first teaser trailer gives a great look at the new interpretations of the main characters as well as establishing the tone of the film, but fans will be left wondering if Inspector Carmelita Fox is going to make an apeparance. The film is expected to arrive on screens in 2016.
Hit the jump for the Sly Cooper trailer and synopsis.

Christian De Vita directed from a script that Antoine Barraud and Guilhem Lesaffre wrote with Cory Edwards (“Hoodwinked”)

In a seven-figure deal, Wrekin Hill Entertainment has acquired all North American rights to Christian De Vita’s 3D animated feature “Yellowbird” from TeamTO and Haut & Court, the company announced Monday.

Based on fantastic artwork by Benjamin Renner (“Ernest and Celestine”), “Yellowbird” features the voices of Seth Green, Dakota Fanning, Danny Glover, Elliott Gould, Jim Rash and Christine Baranski.

Antoine Barraud and Guilhem Lesaffre wrote the currently-in-production movie with Cory Edwards (“Hoodwinked”), and Wrekin Hill will release the film in theaters this fall.

Charting a path from Europe to Africa, “Yellowbird” is the epic story of a young teenage bird so scared to venture out into the world that he nearly misses the fun of discovering who he really is.

“We believe that ‘Yellowbird’ will capture the imagination of children, teens and adults alike. It is a beautifully written story about the power of self-discovery and community that will surely take audiences on anincredible emotional journey with its characters,” said Wrekin Hill president/CEO Chris Ball. “With films like ‘Frozen’ and ‘The Nut Job’ showing strength at the U.S. box office, it is clear that there is a real hunger for satisfying family entertainment.”

”’Yellowbird’ is both a fable and a touching human comedy about self-realization. We are thrilled to work with Wrekin Hill as our American distributor,” added TeamTO producer Corinne Kouper.

The deal for “Yellowbird” was negotiated by Rene Cogan and Alex Mandell for Wrekin Hill with Simon Crowe for UK-based SC Films International on behalf of the filmmakers.

Wrekin Hill has a multi-year U.S. home entertainment distribution deal with Lionsgate, and a three-year multi-platform output deal with Canadian distributor eOne. The company’s most recent acquisitions include Bille August’s “Night Train to Lisbon” starring Jeremy Irons, Melanie Laurent and Charlotte Rampling; and Gabriele Salvatores’ upcoming “Deadly Code” starring John Malkovich.

Hot Stuff the Little Devil (DreamWorks Animation )

DreamWorks Animation has plans to bring the Harvey Comics character Hot Stuff the Little Devil to the big screen with The Hollywood Reporter suggesting that the project may mark the first-ever live-action/CGI hybrid film from the studio. "Bob's Burgers" scribes (and siblings) Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux are attached to provide the screenplay.

Hot Stuff was created by Warren Kremer (who also created vintage funnybook characters like Richie Rich, Little Audrey and Casper the Friendly Ghost) and made his first appearance in 1957's "Hot Stuff" #1. A young, pitch-fork-wielding devil, Hot Stuff often uses his demonic powers to perform good deeds, much to the chagrin of the older devils.

There's no timeframe yet on when to expect a Hot Stuff film in theaters, but check back for details on the project as they become available.

Third Smurfs Movies to be Entirely Animated

It sounds like The Smurfs will be on their own for the third movie and won't be able to rely on humans. In an article at Variety on Sony Pictures, the trade says that the studio is fast-tracking The Smurfs 3 and that it will be entirely animated, compared to its predecessors which were live-action/animated hybrids.

The first film, which was released on July 29, 2011, cost about $110 million to make and earned $563.7 million worldwide. The $105 million second installment, released on July 31, 2013, took quite a dip in earnings, making $347.5 million worldwide.

The third film is scheduled for a August 14, 2015 release.

Warner Bros. Taps Writer for Sequel to The LEGO Movie

Though it doesn't open in wide release for a few more days, TheWrap is reporting that Warner Bros. has already decided on pushing forward with a sequel to The LEGO Movie and they've hired Jared Stern to write it. Stern's screenplay credits include The Internship, The Watch, and Mr. Popper's Penguins, and he's also credited with adding story materials for the animated films Wreck-It Ralph, The Princess and The Frog and Bolt.

The original 3D computer animated story follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

Opening in theaters the evening of February 6, The LEGO Movie is written and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and features the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.

D. Matt Geller (Night Witches) and Igor Dobrovoslky of Luxor Entertainment are producing the feature, which already has Jeffrey Wright on board as the piece’s villain.
Guterman’s take on the folk tale begins in 1713 with the King of Bremen demanding his incompetent wizard search across space and time for the greatest musical troupe ever to perform at his daughter's wedding.
Cumming will voice Gevork, the intelligent yet bumbling assistant to Wizard Cregg, who aids his master as they attempt to complete the seemingly impossible time-travel task.

BERLIN – A collective run by Internet mogul Robin Li -- China's richest man -- is financing a new film production venture that will be run by Korean filmmaker Jeongjung Kim and Chinese producer Gary Zhang.
OUR EDITOR RECOMMENDS

Berlin: China's Films Show Gritty Underbelly of Economic Miracle

China Mulls Upping Film Quota by 10 (Exclusive)
The first title from Aquamen Entertainment is the 3D CGI tentpole Kong, based on the famous Chinese Monkey King Legend and intended to be one of the largest Asian animated projects ever mounted. Kong will be developed in association with a Korean animation studio, although Kim and Zhang intend to hire a Hollywood director.
Aquamen is based in Los Los Angeles.
Kong, sporting a $40 million budget, is the latest movie or television property to be adapted from the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. The film will tell the origin story of the titular character, who was born from molten rock in the Earth's core, but will also feature sci-fi elements, including aliens and robots.
Li is president of the Chinese Cultural Chamber of Commerce of the Private Sector, a collective of hundreds of Asian companies with total assets of more than $1 trillion dollars. It is the first national organization in the cultural sector approved by China's State Council, and was formed last year. Zhang serves as the collective's vice chairman.
Li is first and foremost known as the chairman of Baidu, China's largest Internet search engine. Late last year, he surpassed Wang Jianlin, chairman of the Dalian Wanda Group, to become China's richest man, with a reported net worth of $12.2 billion.
With Kong, the new production venture is looking to energize the Asian animation sector.
Animation has been the poor relation in the Chinese film business for a long time, and previous attempts to make a big animation feature, such as Through the Moebius Strip in 2005, have floundered. But growing technical sophistication has seen some breakout animated features do well at the box office.
Recent successes include the Pleasant Goat, the Big Big Wolf franchise and Boonie Bears: To the Rescue, which has taken in $35.8 million so far at the box office (as a way of comparison, Despicable Me 2 has earned north of $52 million).
Aquamen intends to announce a director for Kong during the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Netflix is bulking up on its kids offerings.

The streaming service is set to launch a new original series, Dinotrux, in the spring of 2015. The kids entry, based on Chris Gall's award-winning book series, will feature hybrid dinosaur-construction characters who are set to build and battle over three seasons. It marks the latest from DreamWorks Animation, which inked a landmark deal with Netflix for 300 hours of programming inspired by DWA characters in early 2013.
Dinotrux will follow the adventures of two unlikely best friends as they navigate the mechanical domain ruled by creatures including Tyrannosaurus Trux, Scraptors and Tow-a-constrictors. The series will join DreamWorks' Turbo Fast, which launched in 2013, as well as forthcoming efforts King Julien, Puss in Boots, Veggie Tales in the House and DreamWorks Dragons.
"This is a property that creates a new world with stunning visuals and fantastic action combined with great characters and comedy. In Dinotrux, the biggest guy and the smallest creature become best friends and through their unique partnership evolve their primitive world—a theme that we think will resonate with kids," said Margie Cohn, TV head at DreamWorks Animation in a statement announcing the news Friday.
Added Netflix originals vp Cindy Holland: "DreamWorks has a proven track record of creating beloved characters, and we're excited to be able to bring the Dinotrux friends to our members. We know kids and families love discovering new series to watch together and we're pleased to continue to expand our show line-up from DreamWorks."

Sony Pictures Animation Announces Stop Motion/Live Action Hybrid Feature Superbago
Source: Sony Pictures Animation
July 9, 2014

Sony Pictures Animation announced today that they're developing a new stop motion/live action hybrid feature project titled Superbago. It will be directed by John Harvatine and Eric Towner ("Robot Chicken") and produced by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) along with Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Eric Robinson. The film is being written by Hess, Ricky Blitt, Hubbel Palmer, and Chris Bowman.

"'Superbago' is a unique new project for Sony Pictures Animation," says Michelle Raimo Kouyate, president of production at Sony Pictures Animation. "I love that our studio has the luxury of not being tied down to one specific type of movie. 'Superbago' will skew older than our last features but I immediately fell in love with the smart comedy idea behind it which features two irreverent stop motion characters dropped in a live action world. The incredibly talented creative team of directors John Harvatine and Eric Towner along with the unique perspective of producer Jared Hess will make this project like nothing you've seen before."

"This project started with a couple of buddies buying a '73 Winnebago off craigslist and making a short film near and dear to our hearts," said Eric Towner. "We found a super supportive home in Sony Pictures Animation and couldn't be more thrilled with the talented team surrounding the project."

Check back for more details on Superbago as soon as they become available.

Faust, repped by Metropolis Talent, developed the Hub Network cartoon My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, which spawned the pop culture phenomena and their accompanying terms, "bronies" and "pegasisters."
Alcott was a co-writer on the animated film Antz, and most recently worked on The Weinstein Co.’s live-action The Giver, starring Jeff Bridges. He's repped by The Radmin Company. Golden has worked mostly in reality television production, including on The Bachelor.

Gary Sanchez Prods’ Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Chris Henchy will become creative collaborators and exec producers on Henchmen, a feature-length adaptation of the SIGGRAPH 2014 short Henchmen: Ill Suited, from Bron Studios. The production is targeting a 2016 debut.

Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 10.21.42 AMThe story line starts with a variant of the Sorceror’s Apprentice story line. In this case, a dreamy janitor working in the bad guy museum of Supervillain City ends up inside a somewhat out-of-control super-powered space suit, and causes all kinds of mayhem. The synopsis for the feature-length adaptation suggests there will still be a hapless young twerp in a super suit, but will also focus on a “fallen henchman” named Hank overseeing a “motley crew of blue-collar workers in the Union of Evil.” The “risk-nothing” sentiments of Hank are challenged when he must become a hero and rescue the kid in the suit and the missing woman he loves. Ill Suited is premiering this week at the big computer graphics and animation convention, SIGGRAPH 2014, being held in Vancouver.

Henchmen reteams the Sanchez crew with British Columbia-based Bron, which previously worked with Sanchez on Welcome To Me, starring Kristen Wiig and set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in a few weeks.

Jason Cloth of Creative Wealth Media Finance, one of the film’s main backers, will also exec produce. Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert and Luke Carroll are producing. Adam Wood, who wrote and directed Ill Suited, is directing. Dennis McNicholas (Saturday Night Live, Garfunkel and Oates, Go On) is completing a script re-write.

Betty Boop Movie (Animal Logic Produced)

Simon Cowell Putting Together a BETTY BOOP Movie

For some reason, I’d never think to associate Simon Cowell with Betty Boop, but it looks like he’s a fan of the animated character because he’s developing and producing a feature film for her. Apparently, Cowell’s been busy developing this idea with the company that owns the character, Fleischer Studios, for several months now via his own shingle, Syco Entertainment, and alongside Animal Logic Entertainment, the company that worked on the animation in The Lego Movie.
Betty Boop first popped up in 1930 and quickly became known for her playful, flirtatious and feisty behavior, and is also widely recognized as the first sex symbol in the animated film realm. Hit the jump for more on the Betty Boop movie.
betty-boopAs reported by Variety, there’s no writer or director attached to the project just yet, but Cowell will produce alongside Adam Milano from Syco, and Zareh Nalbandian and Jason Lust from Animal Logic. Cowell stated:
“Betty is an icon, and one of the biggest stars in the world – I’m thrilled to be working with her. Betty, I’ve worked with some serious divas but I think you could be the biggest of them all!”
Just a couple of months ago, Syco and Animal Logic announced plans to team up and make some music-based animated and live-action/animation hybrid films with their first to be released in 2016. There’s no confirmation in the article on whether or not the Betty Boop movie is that 2016 film, but considering the companies have yet to announce any other ideas, it seems likely that this is it.

Stevenson, who was nominated for an Oscar for directing Kung Fu Panda, will helm Unified Pictures' animated adventure comedy. The film is described as a reworking of the biblical tale from the animals' point of view, following an outcast aardvark named Gilbert who must leads a ragtag group of creatures to the ark in time to escape the flood.

Philip LaZebnik and Glen Dolman wrote the script. The film is currently in pre-production and is set for completion in 2016. It is being overseen by executive producers Cecil Kramer and Stevenson with Unified co-founders Kurt Rauer and Keith Kjarval.

Noah's Ark is the first animated feature for Unified Pictures. The company's production credits include the thriller A Single Shot, Clark Gregg's dark comedy Trust Me, and William H. Macy's directorial debut Rudderless, which premiered at Sundance in 2014.

The animated comedy is one of a raft of Bible-themed titles recently. It follows Darren Aronofsky's Noah, an epic take on the Bible story earlier this year. Other similarly themed material is the gospel-based Exodus: Gods and Kings from Ridley Scott and the Jesus bio Son of God.

Stevenson has previously served as story artist on Shrek, its sequel and Madagascar.

"As soon as Kurt and Keith approached me with the idea of taking the classic tale of Noah’s Ark and telling a more personal story within the story, I jumped at the chance," he said in a statement.

He is repped by CAA.

Sony Pictures Animation Developing Faith-Based Movie About Nativity Story (Exclusive)
DeVon Franklin will produce the animated film “The Lamb” under his new company Franklin Entertainment

BAFTA LA Outreach ProjectSony Pictures Animation is developing “The Lamb,” an animated movie inspired by the Nativity story that DeVon Franklin will produce under his newly-minted company Franklin Entertainment.

Based on an original pitch by Tom Sheridan, the film will feature both laughs and heart, as well as an all-animal cast.

Sony Animation intends to produce an inspiring, respectful and entertaining take on the famous Nativity story while remaining accessible to a broad audiences.

Sony Pictures Animation's Michelle Raimo Kouyate, Jenny Marchick and Daniel Inkeles will oversee the project for the studio.

Franklin previously told TheWrap he believes that “entertainment absolutely has the power to heal,” and cited the increasing success of faith-based films and growing need for such content. ”There is a desire for more uplifting content, and content that can inspire and challenge people in a way that makes us think more about our purpose, more about our destiny, and more about our history,” said Franklin, who is also a well-respected motivational speaker and Christian preacher.

The market for faith-based entertainment has been as big as ever this year, as evidenced by Darren Aronofsky‘s “Noah” ($359 million worldwide), Sony's “Heaven Is For Real” ($100 million worldwide), Mark Burnett and Roma Downey‘s “Son of God” (nearly $60 million in the U.S.), the Kevin Sorbo movie “God's Not Dead” ($60 million in the U.S. on a $2 million production budget”) and the Christian-themed football film “When the Game Stands Tall,” which is also expected to turn a profit.

With renewed interest in family-friendly, faith-based stories, it was only a matter of time before a major animation studio would take advantage of the trend and target younger audiences.

DreamWorks Animation tried its hand at a Biblical animated movie in 1998 with “The Prince of Egypt,” which grossed $218 million worldwide. So far, that has been the only faith-based film from a major animation studio, though it should be noted that ”Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie” grossed $25 million in the U.S. on a reported production budget of $14 million.

Since graduating from UCLA's MFA screenwriting program, Sheridan has written ”The Honey Bees” for Nickelodeon TV Movies. He also sold an original feature pitch to Paramount Animation and has been hired to rewrite ”Chilly Willy” for Universal.

Franklin is represented by CAA, while Sheridan is represented by APA, manager Jonathan Hung, and attorney Mike Castrillo.
