'Lilo & Stitch' Live-Action Remake in the Works at Disney (Exclusive)

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who are already working on the live-action remake of 'Aladdin,' are producing what will be a live-action/CG hybrid.
Stitch is back.

Lilo & Stitch, the 2002 animated movie from Walt Disney Feature Animation, is getting the live-action treatment, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The studio has hired up-and-comer Mike Van Waes to pen the script for the remake, which will be produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, formerly known as Lin Pictures. The two are already known in the Disney halls as they are working on the high-profile live-action remake of Aladdin.

The original film was written and directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, who later found acclaim with How to Train Your Dragon.

The Hawaii-centric story told of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction. Pursuing aliens, social workers and the idea of the bond of a family figure into the proceedings.

While not a massive success by modern box-office standards, the well-regarded movie was a bright spot in a down period of Disney’s animation history and launched several direct-to-video sequels as well as several television series.

It is unclear whether the new project, which is intended to be a live-action/CG hybrid, is intended for theatrical release or for Disney's streaming service that is set to launch in 2019.

Rideback’s Ryan Halprin is co-producing.

The project is the latest in Disney’s successful strategy of mining its past animated classics and repurposing them as live-action tentpoles events. Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast and Pete’s Dragon are some of the recent releases, with Dumbo, The Lion King and Aladdin among those heading moviegoers’ way in the future.

Van Waes is better known in Hollywood circles as a writer of horror fare. He penned The Crooked Man, based on a character from New Line’s The Conjuring 2 and which is being developed as a Conjuring Universe spinoff. He also wrote Not in Kansas, a Wizard of Oz-themed horror project also set up at New Line. Van Waes is repped by CAA and Grandview.

Lin’s Aladdin is due in theaters May 24, 2019. Guy Ritchie directed the movie, which stars Will Smith as Genie.

Exclusive: Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Will Head To Disney+

The film will receive a budget similar to the Disney+ live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp (around $60 million).

Back in October 2018, reports surfaced that a live-action remake to Disney’s 2002 animated hit Lilo & Stitch was in the works. Since then we haven’t heard much on the project, until now.

We have learned that production on the live-action/CGI hybrid is set to begin filming this Fall in Hawaii. The studio is also prepping this film as a part of their original films for Disney+. A cool tidbit we also hear is that the voice of Stitch from the original films and series, Chris Sanders is expected to return as the voice of Stitch.

Here is a brief synopsis for the film:

The story is about the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction.

Mike Van Waes (The Crooked Man) wrote the script for the remake that will be produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, who are coming off last year’s billion-dollar hit remake of Aladdin and are also producing the Disney+ Inspector Gadget film. Studio execs Zoe Kent (Sade) and Louie Provost (Togo) will oversee the production. A search for a director is underway.

The remake is said to follow the same story as the animated film that followed a young girl’s close encounter with the galaxy’s most wanted extraterrestrial. Lilo is a lonely Hawaiian girl who adopts a small ugly “dog,” whom she names Stitch. Stitch would be the perfect pet if he weren’t, in reality, a genetic experiment who has escaped from an alien planet and crash-landed on Earth. Through her love, faith and unwavering belief in ohana, the Hawaiian concept of family, Lilo helps unlock Stitch’s heart and gives him the ability to care for someone else.

Released in the Summer of 2002, Walt Disney Animations’ Lilo & Stitch grossed a whopping $273 million at the worldwide box office on an $80 million. The film would go on to spawn multiple straight to DVD sequels, which ultimately led to a Disney Channel original series that ran for two seasons from 2003-2006

Stay tuned to TheDisInsider.com as we bring you all the latest updates on Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake.

Q: There has also been a recent trend of remaking classic animated movies into live-action films – even Lilo & Stitch has been mooted for the remake treatment. What’s your take on that?

Dean DeBlois: I find it off-putting, to be honest. In one sense, I think it’s easy because all of the hard work of finding the story and honing it has been done – so now you get to take a movie that’s been a success and just make it in a different medium. But more than that, I feel that the live-action adaptations negate the animated ones in some way; as if to say that they are better than the original. You know, “let us improve upon your flawed medium.” So as somebody who loves animation, I think it loses the charm.

Maybe it appeals to a wider audience – and they certainly do well. So I am probably in the minority. But especially for a film like Lilo & Stitch, which was such a singular, quirky vision – we were basically a group of people trying to make Chris Sanders’ idea for a storybook come to life. And it’s so personal; it’s not an age-old fairytale or a known legend. It’s such a specific story. So to remake it, particularly with a new group of people that weren’t part of that original team… Yeah, that seems like an odd one to me.

Lilo And Stitch's Original Director Has A Big Concern For The Live-Action Remake

In recent years, Disney has done some impressive work bringing animated classics into the realm of live-action, both managing to pull off spectacular visual effects-driven feats, and finding new ways to approach beloved stories. Even with that record established, though, there is a fair bit of curiosity surrounding how cinematic magic will be applied to the in-the-works Lilo & Stitch remake – specifically the task of rendering the titular alien into a more reality-based medium.

This has been a lingering question for fans ever since the live-action project was announced a couple years ago, and it turns out they aren’t alone in their pondering. As I learned late last week talking with Chris Sanders, director of the upcoming The Call Of The Wild and co-writer/co-director of the animated Lilo & Stitch, he too isn’t quite sure how that transition is going to work out – and it’s actually a query that ties back to important decisions that were made back when the original film was in development.

It was at the end of my interview with the filmmaker that I asked for his take on the work being done to bring Stitch into live-action, and he began his answer by providing a bit of background about the making of Lilo & Stitch. Released in 2002, the feature was made when the animation industry was experiencing a massive transition from classic hand-drawn cells to CG. Sanders explained that he and co-writer/co-director Dean DeBlois were asked which direction they preferred to go in for their project, and it was actually the design of Stitch and the capacities of computers of the time that ultimately motivated the choice. Said Sanders,

"I definitely thought CG was, not at that point, up to the task of turning [Stitch] into something that would be visually not disturbing. With traditional hand-drawn animation cells you can make it in a particular way you can look at that and not see it as odd. If you think about a reinterpretation of Lilo as a CG character, she would just look very strange because I think she'd feel very Muppet-y because of her big mouth, while in the hand drawn realm she looks pretty normal."

As weird as Stitch looked, with his blue fur, extra arms, and antenna, he didn’t look totally out of place because of the aesthetic design of the rest of the world that was created by the animation style. There was a certain degree of latitude permitted to make him look extra weird and still fit in because even the humans had characteristics that didn’t translate as photo-real.

That, however, won’t be the case in a Lilo & Stitch live-action movie, as the human characters will look specifically human. And that creates an issue given the elements of the film’s plot that require Stitch to have the ability to blend into normal society.

In the animated film, there is a considerable portion of the story where most of the characters are convinced that Stitch is nothing more than a super weird looking dog (one that got run over by a truck, no less), but that’s going to be a little bit hard to swallow if the live-action adaptation features a Stitch that is simply a 3D rendering of the ridiculous alien creature we all recognize. Sanders explained,

"Even though he was very bizarre, I think you could buy that people would accept maybe that he was some sort of dog and not just run screaming from him [in the animated movie]. But in live-action with real people that's going to be different. I don't think you could put a literal Stitch in there and believably think that people wouldn't just run away from him. So I'm very curious what angle they will take on him."

So what will the solution be? Right now the answer is unclear, but as more information comes out about the project hopefully we will get a better idea.

As of now, the Lilo & Stitch live-action adaptation is only in development, with no release date set or filmmakers attached. Hopefully we will get to hear more about it soon, however, and as more updates come in we here at CinemaBlend will continue to report on them.

Also be sure to stay tuned here the site for more from my interview with Chris Sanders, and see The Call Of The Wild, starring Harrison Ford, Omar Sy, Dan Stevens, Karen Gillan, and more, in theaters this Friday.

Rumor: Siena Agudong Joins Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’

Just one week after tapping Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu to direct their upcoming live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, Disney may have found their star.
Now, it should be noted I could not get multiple confirmations on this information I received but was initially given this info from a solid source. That said, this should be taken as a rumor for now.
I have heard the studio has tapped 16-year-old Hawaiian actress Siena Agudong to play Lilo in the updated film, which is said to follow the same concept as the animated film. The most interesting piece of this news is that the studio would be going with an older actress, as Lilo is 6 years old in the original.
Siena Agudong is no stranger to the Disney company as she recently starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie, Upside Down Magic.

Mike Van Waes wrote the current draft for the project, which has not been greenlit and is still in development. The studio is also prepping this film as a part of their original films for Disney+. A cool tidbit we also hear is that the voice of Stitch from the original films and series, Chris Sanders is expected to return as the voice of Stitch.

Jon M. Chu Exits Disney+ ‘Willow’ Series

Last month, during Disney’s Investor Day meeting, Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy confirmed reports that Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu would helm the Disney+ Willow sequel series. Now, we have a disappointing update.

Chu took to Instagram and announced that he has departed the project due to scheduling conflicts. Sadly, his statement, which you can read below, was a tough one for him, as he was passionate about the project.

"I’m heartbroken to let you all know that I unfortunately have to step away from directing Willow. With the production schedule moving due to continued lockdowns in the UK, and with a new baby coming this summer (surprise!), the timing is just not going to work for me and my family.

As you may know, Willow has been one of my favorite movies since I was a child, so I’m devastated that

I won’t be able to work with some of my heroes old and new like Kathy, Ron, Jon, Wendy, Michelle, and the amazing cast and crew they’ve put together. Like a kid seeing Willow for the first time in the ‘80s, I will look forward to watching this magical new world unfold as a very enthusiastic fan. And boy do they have an adventure in store for you! I can’t wait for you all to experience it soon.

Much love, and take care of each other during these fast changing times,
Jon M. Chu"

It is unknown at this time of Disney’s live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, which has Chu attached to direct, is also affected by this decision. We will continue to look into this and update you when we can.

Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Director Dean Fleischer Camp Plans to Consult With Original Director Chris Sanders

Director Dean Fleischer Camp is receiving tons of praise for his newest film Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. His work helped him nab the job of directing Disney’s live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch.

While speaking with TheWrap during press for Marcel, Camp revealed that it is still too early to talk about Lilo & Stitch but says he is a fan of the original. “I’m a huge fan of the original and it means enough to me that I will work so hard to make it to get it right and to do it justice. But it is so early in the process. Like I don’t even know how to answer a lot of those questions.”

When asked if he would consult with the animated Lilo & Stitch director Chris Sanders, Camp said of course. “Oh, of course. The man has to be involved. I don’t know him personally, but obviously, it’s his creation.” There are rumors that Chris Sanders will in fact return to do the voice work for Stitch in the live-action remake, but of course, those have yet to be confirmed by Disney.

The remake, which is expected to be a Disney+ feature, is said to follow the same story as the animated film that followed a young girl’s close encounter with the galaxy’s most wanted extraterrestrial. RUMOR: Disney’s Live-Action ‘Hunchback Of Notre Dame’ Still On Track, Headed To Disney+ Alongside ‘Lilo & Stitch’

We’re literally days away from this year’s D23 Expo. Although we expect to receive some awesome news and exciting updates about Disney’s future projects at the event, we at The DisInsider have obtained some interesting information about a couple of upcoming projects that we thought would be fun to share.

Now, to be totally transparent, we couldn’t get enough confirmation on the following info to run it as an exclusive, but we thought Disney fans would still enjoy hearing the “news” which is why we’re opting to run it as a rumor. So it goes without saying that everything below should be taken with a grain of salt.

Now, we’ve previously reported on this but we’ve gotten word again that the previously announced live-action Lilo & Stitch film is still being planned as a Disney+ exclusive. As you might recall, earlier this Summer, Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) was tapped to direct the film. While we don’t have a clear timeline of when exactly the film will be released, we expect production to ramp up in the coming months.

That’s not all. Another previously announced live-action remake is still in development and being eyed for a Disney+ release too: The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Despite being announced three years ago, the last time the project was even acknowledged was in a throwaway tweet by Josh Gad in January of 2021. When asked about the film on Twitter, the actor simply replied “Getting. Closer. And. Closer.”

The last thing we at The DisInsider had heard about the project was that it was supposed to enter production this past February under the working title ‘Macaron.’ That obviously did not happen, which is one of many reasons we opted to not report on it, but with this latest bit of info it looks like fans might actually “closer” than ever to an update.

Now, once again, there’s a chance some of this info could be wrong – that’s why we’ve listed it as a rumor and not a report. Hopefully Disney will offer some official clarification at their live-action panel next week.

Stay tuned for more fun and exciting rumors like this one that we’ll be sharing leading up until the Expo!

And be sure to find us there too! The DisInsider will be in attendance and will have a booth during the event. Make sure to stop by for photo ops, games, goodies, and so much more!

When a six-year-old’s favorite film is something you did that far back, it’s just amazing to be part of things like that.

Dal sito https://thedisinsider.com/2022/11/11/live-action-lilo-stitch-to-begin-filming-february-2023/:

Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ to Begin Filming February 2023

Disney’s live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch has been in development for a few years now. The COVID-19 pandemic sadly set the project back, but now there is finally an update.

According to Discussing Film’s Jacob Fisher, Lilo & Stitch is set to begin next February in Hawaii. The insider also added that casting on the project is currently ongoing, so expect to hear additional updates on the project soon.

Back in August, just before Disney’s D23 Expo, we heard that Disney still plans to release the film as a Disney+ Original Movie, something we originally reported on back in 2020. Fisher has also backed our reporting.

Through her love, faith, and unwavering belief in ohana, the Hawaiian concept of family, Lilo helps unlock Stitch’s heart and gives him the ability to care for someone else.

Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) is set to direct with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback producing. Studio execs Zoe Kent (Sade) and Louie Provost (Togo) will oversee the production.

Dal sito https://www.murphysmultiverse.com/exclusive-lilo-stitch-replace-character/:

EXCLUSIVE: Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Replacing an Iconic Character from the Animated Original

Disney is all about live-action remakes these days and they’ve eyed pretty much any of their iconic animated films to get the treatment. Among them is the iconic Lilo and Stitch, which is set to be directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp based on a script from Chris Kekianiokalani Bright, which once again explores the story of a young girl named Lilo who ends up with a rather different kind of pet who she names Stitch. While the film will follow the story of the original, we can exclusively share a few details of two original characters being added to the story.

The film is currently busy casting for the roles of Lilo, Nani, and David Kawena from the original animated film. There’s no word if they are actively looking for a voice actor for Stitch, or perhaps they might even see Chris Sanders return to the role. Yet, they are also actively casting two new roles for the film which are a character known as Tutu and Mrs. Kekoa. The former is described as someone who speaks with a local Pidgin accent and is the neighbor of the Pelekai sisters, Lilo and Nani.

The surprising new addition is Mrs. Kekoa, as she seemingly will take on the role of Cobra Bubbles. It’s unclear if that character will still be featured in the film, but it seems that this new character is being cast as the social worker, who pays Nani a few visits to see if their living conditions are right for her to continue looking after Lilo. The addition of an alien pretending to be a dog won’t help matters much. Her inclusion does raise the question if Bubbles will be featured in the film at all, but it is possible they may be taking a different route.

There have been a few rumblings hinting at Disney hoping to start production on it soon. DisInsider shared back in August that the film might be set as a Disney+ exclusive. This was highlighted by Discussing Film’s Jacob Fischer, who also hinted at a production start in February, which we can also confirm. They will be filming until the end of May 2023 in Hawaii, which will definitely make the project stand out and sticks to the aspects that made the original shine.

Disney’s ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action Movie Lead Character Breakdowns Go Out (EXCLUSIVE)

Today, we at Knight Edge Media learned that a casting call has gone out for the leads in the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch feature film by Walt Disney. Originally, Jon. M Chu was attached to helm the film but director Dean Fleischer-Camp took over in July. Now the casting call is for the lead roles of Lilo, Nani, and David. Also casting call went out for their neighbor Tutu and the social worker Mrs. Kekoa (as opposed to Mr. Bubbles in the original film).

[LILO PELEKAI]
6-8 years old. A young, precocious Native Hawaiian girl who loves hula, surfing, and wildlife, with a special affinity for all things “gross.” She has a propulsive imagination and a colorful rebellious streak that often lands her in hot water. Needless to say, she doesn’t fit in. Her classmates consider her a “weirdie,” and aside from her homemade ragdoll Scrump, she has few friends. To complicate matters, her parents’ death a few years back has left her and her older sister Nani all alone and warped by grief, though you wouldn’t know it from Lilo’s relentless, fun loving optimism. When a social worker recommends that Nani and Lilo adopt a dog as a companion for her, Lilo is stoked! But this new addition to the family proves to be more than they bargained for: Unruly, impulsive, and freakishly strong; he’s a furry, ugly-cute wrecking ball seemingly bent on destroying everything in his path. To Nani, this “dog” is a total nightmare. But to Lilo, she’s just found her new best friend!…LEAD (1) We encourage submissions of diverse actors, including actors who are of Native Hawaiian/Polynesian/Maori descent.

[NANI PELEKAI]
18, intelligent, overachieving, athletic, Type A, Native Hawaiian. Lilo’s harried but well- intentioned older sister, whose role as Lilo’s sole caretaker and legal guardian has recently transformed her from a straight-A student with unbeatable extracurriculars and a bright future (with a Fulbright Scholarship to boot!) into a smiling pressure cooker who might just blow at any minute. She’s doing her level best to muscle through an impossible situation, but lately her level best just hasn’t been enough. Caring for Lilo while keeping up her grades and holding down a steady job ain’t easy, and her shortcomings have recently drawn unwanted attention from Child Protective Services, who threaten to separate the sisters if they can’t reform. Undeterred, Nani is committed to keeping Lilo out of foster care by maintaining a stable living situation. But the bills are piling up, Nani’s slipping at school and at work, and their Social Services case worker, Mrs. Kekoa, is beginning to lose patience…LEAD (2) We encourage submissions of diverse actors, including actors who are of Native Hawaiian/Polynesian/Maori descent.

[TUTU]
70s, Native Hawaiian, she is a warm, quick-witted woman who speaks with a local Pidgin accent. Lilo and Nani’s neighbor, she has known the Pelekai family for years. She’s also kind and hospitable, and understanding of Lilo and Nani’s struggles …LEAD (15) We encourage submissions of diverse actors, including actors who are of Native Hawaiian/Polynesian/Maori descent.

55, AANHPI, she is a social worker, a practical, by-the-book kind and patient woman who checks in regularly with Nani, whom she can tell is struggling to keep her head above water while taking care of her younger sister. However, she can’t help but be alarmed by what she finds at the house, unnerved to think that young Lilo is not receiving the supervision she needs. Later, Mrs. Kekoa has no choice but to look for a satisfactory foster family…LEAD (7)

[DAVID KAWENA]
18, Native Hawaiian, handsome in a boy-next-door way, he is Tutu’s grandson who’s clearly sweet on Nani. A decent, good-hearted young man, he is a student at the local community college and also works with Nani at the hotel where he performs the Fire Knife Dance for the tourists. An avid surfer, he can see that Nani has been tense of late and knows nothing can cure a sour disposition better than a “couple of boards and some choice waves.”…LEAD (2) We encourage submissions of diverse actors, including actors who are of Native Hawaiian/Polynesian/Maori descent.

Production is expected to begin in February 2023 and run through May 2023 in Hawaii. Rideback Ranch producers Dan Lin & Ryan Halprin (Avatar: The Last Airbender, The LEGO Movie) are attached to produce the live-action film with Jonathan Eirich. Many fans have long fancast Hawaiian native actress Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) in the role of Nani.

Storyline: NANI, left to care for her young sister, LILO, following the tragic loss of their parents, is finding it increasingly difficult to keep her head above water, while also working and going to school part-time. When the social worker suggests giving Lilo more responsibilities, Nani decides adopting a dog might be a good idea, but is in for a heck of surprise when Lilo insists on taking home a rambunctious, out-of- control and undisciplined "dog" that she dubs, "STITCH." However, the seemingly irredeemable Stitch is happy to discover that being loved and being part of a family are the most important things in the world -- or, more accurately, the universe...

Zach Galifianakis to Star in ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action Movie (Exclusive)

Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind indie darling and best animated Oscar nominee 'Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,' is directing the Disney+ feature.

Zach Galifianakis has closed a deal to star in Lilo & Stitch, Disney’s live-action remake of its cult 2002 animated movie.

Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind indie darling and best animated Oscar nominee Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, is directing the feature that is intended to be a major release on Disney+.

The Hawaii-centric story told of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens banging on the door, the two bonded over a shared sense of family and win the day.

Details of Galifianakis’ role are being kept in the dog pound.

The studio is conducting a wide search for the actors to play Lilo and her older sister. Stitch, naturally, will be a CG confection.

Chris Kekaniokalani Bright wrote the script for the adaptation. Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois wrote and directed the original feature that, while not an initial hit, developed a loyal fanbase that only grew in the ensuing years.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback are producing. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin is executive producing.

The deal marks a return to studio moviemaking for Galifianakis for the first time since 2018’s A Wrinkle in Time, also a Disney movie. The actor and comedian was a fixture on the big-screen for many years thanks to The Hangover movies and films such as Due Date. Since the late 2010s, however, Galifianakis has focused on television work, co-creating and starring in Baskets for FX, and doing plenty of voicework as well.

The comedian is slowly coming out of his shell and has two movies in the can. He is starring with Elizabeth Banks in The Beanie Bubble, centered on the 1990s toy craze, which will stream on Apple, and will appear in Winner, Susanna Fogel’s drama on whistleblower Reality Winner.

Galifianakis, who gained a massive following for his online talk show Between Two Ferns, is repped by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Yorn Levine.

Zach Galifianakis Joins Disney+ ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action Remake

Funny man Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover trilogy) has joined the long in development Disney+ remake of Lilo & Stitch, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The original animated feature was released in 2002 and was an absolute hit, and director Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) will be bringing this heartwarming story to live action. Following films like Pinocchio and Lady and the Tramp, Lilo & Stitch will be a Disney+ original film, something we exclusively reported on back in 2020.

Like the animated original, the remake follows Nani, who is left to care for her young sister, Lilo, following the tragic loss of their parents, is finding it increasingly difficult to keep her head above water, while also working and going to school part-time. When the social worker suggests giving Lilo more responsibilities, Nani decides adopting a dog might be a good idea, but is in for a heck of a surprise when Lilo insists on taking home a rambunctious, out-of-control and undisciplined “dog” that she dubs, “STITCH.” However, Stitch, it turns out, is an escaped alien experiment from a distant planet, being stalked at every turn by agents looking to capture and extinguish him. However, the seemingly irredeemable Stitch is happy to discover that being loved and being part of a family are the most important things in the world — or, more accurately, the universe.

According to our sources, Galifianakis will play Pleakley, an extraterrestrial character, and a self-proclaimed expert on planet earth, who reluctantly becomes Dr. Jumba Jookiba’s partner when forced to assist him in capturing the escaped Experiment 626 [Stitch], and later becomes his best friend and roommate when the two are marooned on Earth.

Attached to produce are Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, who are coming off 2019’s billion-dollar hit remake of Aladdin and are also producing the Disney+ Inspector Gadget film, as well as the Haunted Mansion reboot. Studio execs Zoe Kent (Sade) and Louie Provost (Togo) will oversee the production.

Filming is expected to begin in Hawaii on March 13 and will shoot through June. A release date has yet to be announced by the streamer.

Trovata Lilo! Sarà la giovane Maia Kealoha! è alla sua prima esperienza come attrice.

Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Movie Finds Its Lilo

Maia Kealoha joins Zach Galifianakis in the remake of Disney's cult 2002 animated movie.

Disney has found its Lilo. Newcomer Maia Kealoha has been cast in Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, a remake of its cult 2002 animated movie, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind indie darling and best animated feature Oscar nominee Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, is directing the feature that is intended to be a major release on Disney+.

Disney declined to comment.

The Hawaii-centric story tells of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens banging on the door, the two bond over a shared sense of family and win the day. Zach Galifianakis joined the cast in February. Stitch, naturally, will be a CG confection.

Chris Kekaniokalani Bright wrote the script for the adaptation. Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois wrote and directed the original feature that, while not an initial hit, developed a loyal fan base that has only grown over the ensuing years.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback are producing. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin is executive producing.

Knight Edge Media was the first to report the news.

L'annuncio in esclusiva è dal sito https://knightedgemedia.com/2023/03/maia-kealoha-cast-as-lilo-in-disneys-lilo-stitch/:

Newcomer Maia Kealoha Cast as Lilo in Disney’s ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action Movie (EXCLUSIVE)

Today, we at Knight Edge Media have exclusively learned that up-and-coming Hawaiian actress Maia Kealoha has been cast as Lilo in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch (later confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter). The actress doesn’t have any acting credits but has appeared in multiple Little Miss Kona Coffee pageants (via Instagram). Kealoha also follows and is followed back on Instagram by Executive Producer Ryan Halprin. She joins the previously announced cast member Zach Galifianakis as the alien Pleakley. This casting comes as Rideback Ranch held an open casting call for role since November, as we at Knight Edge Media previously reported.

However, while production was expected to begin in February in Hawaii, it has since been pushed back due to the extensive VFX for all the alien creatures. We have also learned that Moana actress Auli’i Cravalho did speak to Disney at one point about playing Lilo’s sister Nani but didn’t sign on due to her commitments to Mean Girls The Musical: The Movie. Disney could circle back to Cravalho after she finishes filming Mean Girls though that is unknown. We also heard Chris Sanders could return to voice Stitch once again. Finally, our friends at The DisInsider revealed casting is underway for Lilo’s red-haired bully Mertle.

Lilo & Stitch has no set release date

Bah

Inviato da: Under the sea il 14/4/2023, 12:44

E' hawaiana, questo a me sembra sufficiente.

Per me lei e' nani tanto quanto quella e' Ariel, cioe' zero.

Tutto studiato a tavolino.

Inviato da: Under the sea il 16/4/2023, 14:30

Troppo diverse esteticamente,no?

Inviato da: Daydreamer il 16/4/2023, 21:16

Off topic.

Inviato da: Under the sea il 16/4/2023, 21:48

Newcomer Kahiau Machado to Play David in ‘Lilo & Stitch’

Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch cast continues to grow as newcomer Kahiau Machado has been cast as Nani’s love interest and Lilo’s friend, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Filming on the project is expected to begin tomorrow in Hawaii and has a cast that includes Maia Kealoha, who plays Lilo, Zach Galifianakis, who will play Pleakly, Sydney Aguadong as Nani, and Billy Magnussen in an unknown role.

Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) is set to direct.

Disney’s ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Live-Action Movie Adds Jolene Purdy and Newcomer Kahiau Machado (EXCLUSIVE)

Today, we at Knight Edge Media have exclusively learned that Disney has added actress Jolene Purdy and newcomer Kahiau Machado to the cast of Lilo & Stitch. Production began this week on the island of Oahu over the next eight weeks under the working title Bad Dog. First reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Kahiau Machado will play Nani’s love interest, David. At the same time, Jolene Purdy will play child services agent Mrs. Kekoa in the live-action movie. She is best known for her roles in The White Lotus, WandaVision, and Orange is the New Black.

We at Knight Edge Media revealed in November that fan-favorite Mr. Bubbles will not appear in the live-action adaption but will be the gender-bent child services agent, Mrs. Kekoa. She is described as:

A social worker, a practical, by-the-book kind, and patient woman who checks in regularly with Nani, whom she can tell is struggling to keep her head above water while taking care of her younger sister. However, she can’t help but be alarmed by what she finds at the house, unnerved to think that young Lilo is not receiving the supervision she needs. Later, Mrs. Kekoa has no choice but to look for a satisfactory foster family.

They join the previously announced cast of Sydney Agudong, Maia Kealoha, Zach Galifianakis, and Billy Magnussen. Dean Fleischer Camp will helm the film, with Dan Lin and Ryan Halprin (Avatar: The Last Airbender) set to produce.

Courtney B. Vance Boards Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’

EXCLUSIVE: Emmy and Tony-Award winner Courtney B. Vance has joined the cast of Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch in the role of Cobra Bubbles, Deadline has learned.

Vance joins Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die), Zach Galifianakis and newcomer Maia Kealoha who has been tapped as Lilo.

It’s still unclear how the sequel’s plot will compare to the original 2002 animated film, that Hawaii-set story charted the friendship between a lonely girl named Lilo and the alien, Stitch, engineered to be a force of destruction.

In the Disney animated movie which grossed over $273M WW, Bubbles is a former CIA agent turned social worker—though in an undercover way as he is still working for the government. The role was voiced originally by Ving Rhames in the films and various TV projects. The character was also voiced by Terrence C. Carson, Kevin Michael Richardson and Richard Epcar.

The Dean Fleischer Camp-directed live-action film for Disney+ was written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright from a previous draft by Mike Van Waes. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will produce for Rideback, with Ryan Halprin exec producing for the company.

Vance is repped by UTA and Fox Rothschild. He’s a 2x Primetime Emmy Award winner for HBO’s Lovecraft Country (Guest Actor in a Drama Series) and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (Lead Actor in a Limited Series/Movie) for playing attorney Johnnie Cochran. Vance’s feature credits include The Hunt for Red October, Dangerous Minds, Space Cowboys, The Mummy, Isle of Dogs, Ben Is Back, and The Photograph among several others. On TV, he’s starred in Genius: Aretha Franklin, 61st Street, Revenge, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and more.

Disney didn’t respond to request for comment.

Chris Sanders in Final Talks to Return as Voice of Stitch in Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ (Exclusive)

Tia Carrere and Amy Hill round out the cast that already includes Sydney Agudong, Maia Kealoha, Billy Magnussen, Zach Galifianakis and Courtney B. Vance.

Chris Sanders is in final negotiations to voice the character of Stitch in Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Tia Carrere, who originally voiced Nani in the first film, will also play the newly-created Mrs. Kekoa, while Amy Hill will star as a new character named Tūtū.

Sanders, who wrote and directed the original feature alongside Dean DeBlois, voiced the creature, which he also created, in the 2002 Lilo & Stitch, as well as Lilo & Stitch: The Series (2003-2006). Sanders has been rumored to return as Stitch for years, but in a 2022 interview with SYFY Wire, he said he hadn’t been officially approached by the studio.

Newcomer Maia Kealoha is playing Lilo, while Sydney Elizebeth Agudong is playing Nani. Kahiau Machado was cast as David Kawena last week, but has since been recast with Kaipot Dudoit. During Disney’s vetting process, previous posts in which the actor used racial slurs were uncovered on social media. Machado’s casting was not officially confirmed by Disney.

Zach Galifianakis joined the cast in February as Jumba, with Billy Magnussen as Pleakley and Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles rounding out the cast.

Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind indie darling and best animated feature Oscar nominee Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, is directing the remake that is intended to be a major release on Disney+. Production is officially underway in Hawaii.

Chris Kekaniokalani Bright wrote the script for the adaptation.

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback are producing. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin is executive producing alongside Tom Peltzman. The creative team is comprised of production designer Todd Cherniawsky (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Trek: Picard); director of photography Nigel Bluck (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) and second unit DP (Lord of the Rings trilogy, Deadpool); visual effects supervisor Craig Hammack (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Black Panther, Tomorrowland); and costume designer Wendy Chuck (About Schmidt, Nebraskaand The Descendants).

The original film was released in 2002 and became a cult success, grossing over $273 million worldwide based on an $80 million budget. It was also nominated for best animated feature at the 75th Academy Awards.

Sanders is represented by WME and Lichter Grossman.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Police Department has launched an arson investigation after a fire on the set of a major film production on Oahu’s North Shore.

Sources say it happened on the set of Disney’s live-action remake of “Lilo and Stitch.” Monday was supposed to be the first day of filming.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department, crews received a call just before 11 p.m. Sunday for the trailer fire at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Cane Haul Road in Haleiwa.

HFD said upon arrival, brush was burning beneath one of the trailers.

After further investigation, all the contents of the trailer were also on fire, including specialized costumes, sources said.

Firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading to other nearby trailers.

A total of five units staffed with 12 personnel responded to the incident.

Crews were able to put out the blaze by 1 a.m. Monday.

No injuries were reported and no workers were on scene.

Shooting is expected to resume later this week.

The cause of the blaze is still being investigated.

A me fa orrore visto i soldi spesi e le risorse sprecate.

RUMOR: Another Original Cast Member To Appear In Disney’s Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Remake

As production of Disney’s live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch draws to an end, the hype continues to build. While we don’t even have an exclusive first look at the film, all of the leaks have stoked a lot of excitement from the Disney community. If you thought the leaks were good, this latest tidbit is sure to make a lot of fans of the original happy as well.

According to the Twitter account Reel News Hawaii, it appears that in addition to Tia Carrere, Jason Scott Lee is also poised to appear in the film. For those who may not immediately recognize those names, they are the two actors who provided the voice of Nani and David in the original animated film.

"Not only will Tia Carrere make a live action cameo appearance, Jason Scott Lee will too. #liloandstitch pic.twitter.com/XYPpfvZzEi

— Reel News Hawaii (@reelnewshawaii) May 30, 2023"

Now, it’s not entirely clear how the site knows that the actors will appear in the film, but given that they run an account based on projects that shoot in Hawaii it’s safe to assume that they either saw the actors on set or were tipped off about them filming.

Given the account’s credibility in the past, we’re inclined to believe that this information is valid. But we only expect their appearances to be minor. Considering how Disney’s latest live-action film blatantly features a cameo from the original Little Mermaid herself, we’re even more inclined to believe that it’s true.

Sadly, we’ll just have to wait for the film to come out to see for ourselves!

Now, in addition to Carrere and Lee, the film stars newcomer Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Agudong, Kaipot Dudoit, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Chris Sanders, and Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story).

Filming will reportedly continue through June. Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) will direct. There’s no release date just yet, but the film is expected to be released exclusively on Disney+ next year.

Lilo & Stitch cast: See who's playing who in Disney's live-action remake

Tia Carrere isn't the only performer from the animated original that's returning for the remake.

Ohana means family, and Lilo & Stitch's is growing fast — with a whole new cast list.

Almost exactly 21 years after Disney's original animated version of the bad-dog-that's-actually-an-alien-that's-actually-a-robot story hit theaters in 2002, production began on a new live-action version of the film. (Filming was actually slated to begin on Oahu in April 2023, but a costume trailer caught fire the night before the first day of shooting and delayed production until May.)

The adaptation was first announced in 2018, with Mike Van Waes attached to adapt the script. In 2020, it was reported that Wicked helmer Jon M. Chu was in talks to direct. Ultimately Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) was chosen to direct instead, while Chris Kekaniokalani Bright was brought in to take over writing duties.

There's no release date for the live-action film just yet, but if production stays on its originally reported schedule, principal photography should be wrapped by early August. In the meantime, here's a look at who is playing who in the new movie.

Lilo — Maia Kealoha

Newcomer Maia Kealoha will bring to life the title character that was voiced by Daveigh Chase in the original film. Lilo is raised by her sister Nani and feels like an outsider with no friends until she adopts what she thinks is a dog.

(Fun fact: Chase, who made her big-screen debut in Donnie Darko, went on to portray the terrifying TV demon Samara Morgan in The Ring.)

Stitch — Chris Sanders

It's not official just yet, but it's been reported that Chris Sanders was in final negotiations to reprise his role as the voice of Stitch for the new live-action version. Sanders started his career as a character designer for Jim Henson's Muppet Babies and first created Stitch in 1985 for an unsuccessful children's book pitch. Years later, while serving as the head storyboard artist for Disney Feature Animation, Sanders got the chance to pitch revive his now-beloved dog-alien also known as Experiment 626.

Sanders co-wrote and co-directed the 2002 version of Lilo & Stitch with Dean DeBlois, and went on to voice Stitch for the 2003 direct-to-video sequel, Stitch! The Movie; on the Disney Channel show Lilo & Stitch: The Series (2003-'06); as well as for two more direct-to-video sequels, 2005's Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch and 2006's Leroy & Stitch. He also voiced Mulan's pet dog, Little Brother, in the animated Mulan film and Belt the pet sloth in two Croods movies.

Nani — Sydney Agudong

Lilo's older sister and legal guardian, Nani, was voiced by Tia Carrere in the 2002 film, and will be brought to real life by On My Block actress Sydney Agudong. Born and raised in Kaua'i, Hawai'i, the NCIS guest star is also a songwriter, having released her first song, "Welcome to Hollywood," under her artist name, Jayne Doe, in 2022. She is also the sister of Star Falls and No Good Nick actress Siena Agudong.

Pleakley — Billy Magnussen

Into the Woods, Game Night, and No Time to Die actor Billy Magnussen is set to play Agent Pleakley, a Plorgonarian agent of the United Galactic Federation who serves as the organization's expert on Earth (originally voiced by The Kids in the Hall's Kevin McDonald). This isn't Magnussen's first time in a Disney live-action remake: In 2019, he portrayed Prince Anders, a new character created for Guy Ritchie's Aladdin.

Jumba — Zach Galifianakis

It was originally reported that The Hangover breakout Zach Galifianakis was to play Pleakley, but when his casting in the new movie was officially announced, it was in the role of Dr. Jumba Jookiba, the Kweltikwan mad scientist who created Stitch. The character was voiced by David Ogden Stiers, the man behind Cogsworth in 1991's Beauty and the Beast, as well as Governor Ratcliffe and Wiggins in 1995's Pocahontas.

Tūtū — Amy Hill

All-American Girl and UnREAL actress Amy Hill voiced the cat-loving fruit stand owner Lynne Hasagawa (shown above) in the 2002 animated film and Disney channel series. In the live-action movie she will play a new character, Tūtū, the longtime neighbor of Lilo and Nani, and the grandmother of David. A casting call described the character as "kind and hospitable," as well as "a warm, quick-witted woman who speaks with a local Pidgin accent."

Hill was a series regular on another remake, the recently canceled Magnum P.I., and has guest-starred on just about every TV show out there, including Seinfeld, Night Court, Six Feet Under, Desperate Housewives, Two and a Half Men, Mom, and many more.

David — Kaipo Dudoit

Nani's surfer boyfriend, David, will be portrayed by Magnum P.I. guest star Kaipo Dudoit. Kahiau Machado was originally cast in the role but dropped from the film after past usage of racial slurs on his social media were discovered.

David was voiced in the animated version by Jason Scott Lee, who will have a small role in the live-action movie. On a late-June episode of Kyle Meredith With… podcast, Lee revealed he will play a Luau manager in the film. "I got a little, small [part]. They threw me some bones, and I said, 'Yeah, absolutely! In any capacity,'" said the actor, who stars on Disney+'s Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. "I get to see the kid that's playing my character that I voiced, David. And I'll get to see Lilo and I'll get to see Nani, the new people, the actors that are playing them. So it'll be fun."

Cobra Bubbles — Courtney B. Vance

When news dropped that the live-action team was casting a social worker named Mrs. Kekoa, fans jumped to the conclusion that Cobra Bubbles — a former CIA agent who serves as Lilo's social worker in the animated film — was written out of the live-action adaptation. But a few months later it was revealed that Tony- and Emmy-winner Courtney B. Vance had signed on to play the character originally voiced by Ving Rhames.

Mrs. Kekoa — Tia Carrere

Wayne's World and AJ and the Queen actress Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani in the 2022 movie, is back in the ohana — but this time playing social worker Mrs. Kekoa. The casting call for the role described the character as "a practical, by-the-book, kind, and patient woman who checks in regularly with Nani, whom she can tell is struggling to keep her head above water while taking care of her younger sister. However, she can't help but be alarmed by what she finds at the house, unnerved to think that young Lilo is not receiving the supervision she needs. Later, Mrs. Kekoa has no choice but to look for a satisfactory foster family."

Lilo & Stitch

Lilo & Stitch will be a live-action/CGI remake of Disney’s 2002 animated feature film of the same name. The film will be directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, and produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich. It will star Maia Kealoha as Lilo Pelekai and Lilo & Stitch creator Chris Sanders reprising his voice role as Stitch from the original animated continuity.

Also set to appear is Zach Galifianakis as the voice of Dr. Jumba Jookiba, Billy Magnussen as the voice of Agent Pleakley, Sydney Agudong as Nani Pelekai, Kaipo Dudoit as David Kawena, Tia Carrere as Mrs. Kekoa, Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, Amy Hill as Tūtū, and Jason Scott Lee as a luau manager.

The movie, which is being made as a Disney+ original, had filming suspended in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. The production only had a couple weeks left of filming, so the studio will quickly get that finished up at the top of the year.

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Remake to Resume Filming Next Week

Last year’s SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes put a halt on Disney movies and series in various stages of production. One of those projects that is finally set to resume, Lilo & Stitch.

Disney is already back in Hawaii prepping to get the cameras back rolling. The live-action remake will resume filming next week and is expected to wrap sometime in March. The studio is currently casting a young Hawaiian girl to do stand-in shots for Maia Kealoha, who plays Lilo. It is unknown why the stand-in is needed at this time.

The new film tells the story of “the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction. Pursuing aliens, social workers, and the idea of the bond of family figure into the proceedings.”

Also set to star is Lilo & Stitch creator Chris Sanders reprising his voice role as Stitch from the original animated continuity. Zach Galifianakis, Sydney Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Kaipo Dudoit, Courtney B. Vance, and original continuity cast members Tia Carrere, Amy Hill, and Jason Scott Lee will also star.

Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) will direct.

There’s no release date just yet, but the film is expected to be released exclusively on Disney+ this year.
