Exclusive: ‘National Treasure’ Disney+ Series In Development

Collider got Jerry Bruckheimer to open up his book of secrets and give a new update on the National Treasure franchise, which we learned not only includes National Treasure 3, but a Disney+ TV series now in development. During a recent interview with the mega-producer for his new Starz series Hightown, our own Steve Weintraub got the details on the series, which will feature a new, younger cast.

“We’re certainly working on one [National Treasure] for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen. Hopefully, they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active….The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”
As for director Jon Turtletaub‘s National Treasure 3, which attached Bad Boys for Life writer Chris Bremner back in January, that film is still in the scripting process. According to Bruckheimer, the Disney+ series is actually further along in development.

“The film version is being written right now. The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.”
The National Treasure movies, both directed by Turtletaub, follow historian and occasional heist mastermind Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) as he hunts for treasures hidden in America’s oldest nooks and crannies. The big question for Disney+ is what National Treasure even looks like without Cage at the forefront. The thing that sets the two National Treasure films apart from your average adventure flick is the way they aren’t afraid to get unapologetically goofy, and Cage doing his unlikely action hero thing is the secret sauce that makes it work. If the Disney+ series is aiming for a younger cast, I kind’ve love the idea of having Cage—at least in the pilot episode—playing a mentor role of some kind.

‘National Treasure’ TV Series With Latina Lead Greenlighted By Disney+; Mira Nair To Direct

EXCLUSIVE: The long-gestating National Treasure TV series has been greenlighted with a 10-episode order.

The project, from the films’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer and original writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, is a reimagining of the National Treasure franchise. Written by the Wibberleys and to be directed by Mira Nair (Vanity Fair), the series explores the timely issues of identity, community, historical authorship and patriotism, told from the point of view of Jess Morales, a twenty-year-old DREAMer who, with her diverse group of friends, sets off on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover her mysterious family history and recover lost treasure.

Jess Morales is taking the torch from Benjamin Gates, the National Treasure films’ protagonist played by Nicolas Cage.

The Wibberleys executive produce with Jerry Bruckheimer Television. ABC Signature is the studio.

Senior-level writers are expected to join the Wibberleys, whose TV credits include LA’s Finest. They have worked with Bruckheimer on several movies, including the first two National Treasure films and G-Force.

The development of the National Treasure series has been on parallel tracks with the long gestating trequel to Jon Turtletaub‘s movie franchise starring Cage, which brought in Chris Bremner as writer in January 2020.

Disney+ has several upcoming series based on the Disney movies, including Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks and a Beauty and the Beast spinoff.

EXCLUSIVE: ‘National Treasure’ Disney+ Series To Begin Filming Early Next Year

It might sound as crazy as stealing the Declaration of Independence, but we’ve just received word that filming for the highly anticipated reboot of the National Treasure franchise is slated to begin early next year!

Now, when we say early, we mean January! Sources close to the project have confirmed to The DisInsider.

Previously, it was revealed that rather than a (much-desired) third entry, the story would be reimagined as a series for Disney+. Earlier this year, it was reported that the series would follow a latin female lead named Jess Morales and that the torch would be metaphorically passed from Nicolas Cage’s Benjamin Gates to her.

An earlier plot synopsis released by major trades indicated that Jess would be a twenty-something DREAMer who set off on the treasure hunt of a lifetime connected to her family history.

While we hear that the plot will be set into motion when Jess is handed a key by a dying FBI agent. As a result, she’ll be thrust into a dangerous and deadly race to find the titular treasure before a corrupt and conniving billionaire beats her to it.

Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first two films will return to oversee the project alongside original writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley. Mira Nair will direct the pilot. Nair previously helmed Disney’s Queen of Katwe.

So far, there are no actors attached. However, with filming right around the corner, we expect that to change soon.

‘National Treasure’: Lisette Alexis To Headline Disney+ Series

EXCLUSIVE: Emerging young actress Lisette Alexis (Total Eclipse) has landed the lead in Disney+’s National Treasure TV series from Disney Branded Television and ABC Signature.

The project, executive produced by the films’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Jon Turteltaub and writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, is an expansion of the National Treasure movie franchise told from the point of view of a young heroine (Alexis) — a DREAMer in search of answers about her family–who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.

The series, whose pilot episode is written by the Wibberleys and will be directed by Mira Nair, centers on Jess (Alexis), a Latina whose brilliant and resourceful mind loves a good mystery, and she has a natural talent for solving puzzles. Over the course of the show, Jess will uncover her own buried history, as well as the truth about her parents and her connection to a long-lost treasure.

In the TV extension of the National Treasure franchise, Jess is taking the proverbial torch from Benjamin Gates, the National Treasure films’ protagonist played by Nicolas Cage.

Cormac & Marianne Wibberley, Bruckheimer and Turteltaub executive produce the series alongside Rick Muirragui (Suits), who also serves as a writer, as well as Jerry Bruckheimer Television’s Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed. Nair is executive producing the pilot. Production is starting in early 2022.

Alexis, who is Mexican American, stars opposite Sierra McCormick in the Tribeca Film Festival selection We Need To Do Something, produced by Josh Mallerman. She is repped by Innovative Artists and Stagecoach Entertainment.

Il Mistero dei Templari: annunciati altri membri del cast per la serie Disney+

Lyndon Smith (Parenthood), Zuri Reed (Flatbush Misdemeanors), Jake Austin Walker (12 Mighty Orphans), Antonio Cipriano (Jagged Little Pill) e Jordan Rodrigues (Light as a Feather) faranno parte del cast di National Treasure, la serie Disney+ basata su Il Mistero dei Templari.
Lyndon Smith interpreterà l’agente del FBI Ross. La giovane era la prima della classe a Quantico e le è stato assegnato l’incarico più importante a Washington D.C., ma ha fatto un errore che le è quasi costato la carriera, ed è stata riassegnata. Jordan Rodrigues ha il ruolo di Ethan. Il ragazzo d’oro Ethan e Jess sono migliori amici da quando la madre Manuela gli faceva da tutor da bambini, fin da allora Ethan è innamorato di Jess. Un tipo che segue le regole alla lettera, e che per seguire Jess nella sua caccia al tesoro dovrà imparare a rilassarsi.
Antonio Cipriano vestirà i panni di Oren, un adorabile sapientone esperto di cospirazioni globali, sneakers e business. Cercherà di conquistare Tasha per tutta la stagione prima di capire che l’amore richiede un po’ di sacrificio.
Jake Austin Walker infine sarà Liam, un musicista che proviene da una lunga dinastia di cacciatori di tesori. Quando suo nonno muore, conosce Jess e viene attratto come magneticamente dalla caccia al tesoro che potrebbe portarlo a scoprire il segreto nascosto dal padre.[...]

Catherine Zeta-Jones to Star in Disney+’s National Treasure Series

Disney+ has officially announced that Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones has signed on for a leading role opposite newcomer Lisette Alexis in the upcoming National Treasure series. Zeta-Jones is set to portray the role of Billie, a badass billionaire, black-market antiquities expert, and treasure hunter, who lives by her own code.

“She transformed herself from a penniless orphan to a shrewd, stylish businesswoman and adventurer.” reads the full character description. “Billie’s used to getting what she wants—and she wants the Pan-American treasure. But not just for the money. This treasure has deeper stakes for her.”

This marks the acclaimed actress’ latest TV project after appearing in last year’s Fox’s Prodigal Son Season 2. She will also next star in Netflix’s Tim Burton-directed Wednesday series as the iconic Morticia Addams.[...]

Sono iniziate ufficialmente le riprese della serie Disney+ ispirata al film National Treasure, conosciuto in Italia con il titolo Il Mistero dei Templari.
Lisette Alexis, che interpreta Jessica, ovvero la protagonista dello show, ha celebrato l’inizio delle lavoro sul set con una foto di fronte al camper, pubblicata sul proprio profilo Instagram.[...]

Nella serie Il mistero dei templari, in arrivo prossimamente su Disney+, ci sarà un collegamento diretto al primo film del franchise con protagonista Nicolas Cage. Durante la D23 Expo, la convention dei fan della Disney, nell’area espositiva Comicbook.com ha avuto infatti modo di immortalare dei particolari occhiali che i fan non potranno non riconoscere.
Nel primo Il mistero dei templari, il crittologo Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage), per leggere un messaggio nascosto sulla Dichiarazione di Indipendenza, ricorre a un’invenzione di Benjamin Franklin che gli dà “la visione per vedere il prezioso passato”: un dispositivo oculare con lenti a raggi X multicolori. Dopo aver scoperto un indizio segreto sul retro della Dichiarazione, gli occhiali conducono il protagonista, insieme a Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) e Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger), alla Trinity Church e, infine, al luogo in cui si trova il tesoro dei Templari da tempo perduto.[...]

Visto il primo episodio e tutto sommato non mi è dispiaciuto.. era prevedibile, vista l'etnia della protagonista, che ci sarebbero state anche qui le solite paternali sull'immigrazione, la cittadinanza e il maschilismo inserite a forza tanto per rendere la serie progressista, insomma normale amministrazione ormai.. quantomeno la storia sembra interessante e potrebbe avere del grande potenziale! Mi spiace soltanto non l'abbiamo pubblicata tutta assieme.. odio vedere le serie a cadenza settimanale, e preferisco di gran lunga farmi le maratone con i tempi che decido io.
