Sembra che la Pixar abbia in mente uno spinoff di Cars da distribuire direttamente in home-video. Planes sarà realizzato a Vancouver.

Cars may not have been Pixar’s biggest moneymaker when it was released in theaters, but the franchise has been a monster hit when it comes to merchandise, raking in several billion dollars in a relatively under-the-radar fashion. Next summer’s release of Cars 2 should boost that figure even further, but then again, kids may be in no rush to replace the Lightning McQueen plush toy they already bought back in 2006. How do you refresh the brand? With planes, of course.

Movieline hears that Pixar is currently developing Planes as a semi-sequel and spinoff franchise to Cars, one meant to take advantage of the enormously lucrative direct-to-video market. It’s a format that Pixar has flirted with before — Toy Story 2 was once meant to go direct to video, and Toy Story 3 was originally developed for DVD in a semi-unauthorized fashion by Disney before Pixar head John Lasseter took over the company — but with Planes, Pixar could leverage the Cars brand without diluting its bigscreen appeal.

That’s a priority for Lasseter, who took the reins at Disney after an era where the company cranked out uninspired DTV sequels to some of its most beloved properties (Cinderella II and The Lion King 1 1/2, anyone?). Then again, Lasseter may have relaxed Pixar’s early hesitation about getting into the sequel business: in addition to Toy Story 3 this year and Cars 2 next year, 2012 will see a bigscreen follow-up to Monsters, Inc.

Movieline claims that Pixar is currently developing Planes, a feature-length semi-sequel/spinoff of Cars, with plans to release it direct to home video. The various aircraft seen in Cars would take center stage.

The idea of Pixar doing direct-to-video sequels or spinoffs is astounding for long-time watchers of the studio. On the face of it, it doesn't sound like anything the studio would do. To many, direct-to-video is synonymous with low-quality flicks made only for the money, and members of Pixar's "brain trust" said as much about the cheap direct-to-video releases Disney put out in '90s.

But at the same time, it's a very intriguing idea. Like it or not, Pixar is part of The Walt Disney Company and must create value for shareholders. High-quality, profitable direct-to-video releases are an excellent way of doing that.

But Pixar must go about it very carefully, as you can be sure they would. Any deterioration of quality —real or perceived— could be extremely damaging to the Pixar brand. A direct-to-video release would inevitably be measured against the studio's previous theatrical successes.

If the story is correct, Planes would most likely be produced at Pixar Canada, the studio's Vancouver satellite charged with developing ancillary releases based on legacy characters from Pixar's feature films. A great opportunity for the artists there to grow creatively.

It's possible that Planes could be one of those "half-hour television specials" Ed Catmull suggested Pixar Canada could do; the Disney Channel or ABC could be great venues. But a television special would be far less lucrative.

beh, si sta ingrandendo a vista d'occhio, come la sua importanza... se continua così prenderà davvero il posto della Disney!

La Disney fece già una storiella su areoplani "umanizzati", e si trova in "Saludos Amigos" (1944). Comunque l'idea, sempre per un pubblico infantile, non sarebbe malaccio, visto che il merchandising di CARS va ALLA GRANDE.

ImageIl rumour di qualche settimana fa è stato ridimensionato: Planes, lo spin-off di Cars in direct-to-dvd, verrà sviluppato dai DisneyToon Studios, già responsabile di Tinkerbell...



Il rumour di qualche settimana fa è stato smentito: non è la Pixar a lavorare a Planes, spin-off di Cars dedicato agli aeroplani e sviluppato in direct-to-DVD.

Bleeding Cool ha infatti scoperto che la realtà è un'altra: sono i DisneyToon Studios, specializzati in sequel e spin-off in Home Video dei classici della Disney, a lavorare al film. La compagnia si è limitata a "non commentare" la notizia, mentre il sito ha aggiunto che per ora i DisneyToon si occuperanno degli storyboard e dei layout, oltre alla post-produzione, mentre le animazioni verranno realizzate in outsourcing in India, nello stesso modo in cui è stata serie di film Tinkerbell (Trilli).
Nessuna notizia, quindi, di un eventuale coinvolgimento della Pixar, ad ogni modo con questo aggiornamento l'intero progetto, ovviamente, si ridimensiona quanto a importanza.

Disney has announced plans to release Planes, a direct-to-video spin-off of Cars, in Spring 2013. This confirms most of the story we first heard in July of last year.

According to the official press release, the feature length film will follow "Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race, despite his fear of heights."

Planes is not being produced at Pixar Canada in Vancouver as previously believed, but at DisneyToon Studios in Burbank. Pixar publicity tells me that the movie is "not a Pixar project". Although based on Pixar's franchise, it will apparently not be branded as "Disney-Pixar".

This isn't the first time that Pixar characters have been 'borrowed' by an outside creative team at Disney. Beginning in 2000, Walt Disney Television produced the animated series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command that aired on ABC.

Speaking at a Walt Disney Company investors conference this morning, Walt Disney Studios chairman Rich Ross said that Planes would be followed by other projects "that kids absolutely love".
That wording could suggest that, like previous DisneyToon Studios projects, Planes will be geared towards a younger audience.
