Disney compra Lucasfilm.

Star Wars 7 Plot Will Be "an Original Story," Says Lucasfilm Source

da Leslie Gornstein 30 ottobre 2012 - 22:00

If Disney is buying LucasFilm, how will that affect Star Wars: Episode 7 and other Star Wars projects? Any word on what the movie will be about?
—Flannel, via Twitter

Well, we know that, whatever the plot of Episode 7, George Lucas won't have a heavy hand in the day-to-day creation of it. He's apparently written the treatments for the films, but he won't produce or direct—an excellent opportunity for another visionary to jettison Jar Jar Binks out of an airlock permanently.

As for the plot, Star Wars superfans have a theory on what they'll be seeing next. But I have a surprise for them: They're wrong. If you're a fan, you're definitely gonna want to read on.

First of all, you should know that there is an official canon concerning the Star Wars universe. Those stories cover the years after rebel victory (i.e., after Return of the Jedi). It's written in a series of books called the Thrawn Trilogy, by author Timothy Zahn. Die-hard Star Wars fans know the trilogy well, and they say that a big-screen adaptation of the first book, Heir to the Empire, would make the most logical Episode 7.

"Of all the speculation out there about the content of this new trilogy, that's the single most concrete idea," says Eric Geller of the fan site TheForce.net. "It's almost inevitable that the story will take place in the same time frame as those books."

So what happens in "those books?"

Well, Luke Skywalker meets a real would-be assassin lady named Mara Jade, who was trained to avenge the Emperor by crushing Luke's pretty blond head. Instead, Jade falls for Luke and, a subsequent graphic novel, the two marry. Skywalker also has to deal with the fact that he's the only Jedi left, at least, for now, and he goes about trying to fix that.

Princess Leia and Han Solo also play heavily into the Thrawn Trilogy, popping out a pair of twins (of course) among other things. As for the name Thrawn, well, that refers to a grand admiral with imperial sympathies who takes over as the leader of the vanquished enemy faction.

So is that the basis for Episode 7 or not? I've heard directly from LucasFilm and other sources close to the picture, and they say: Definitely not.

"It's an original story," a LucasFilm source tells me.

In other words, forget the Star Wars novels. Forget the graphic novels. Forget everything you think you know about what happens to Luke Skywalker. According to my sources, Episode 7 will literally be nothing you've ever seen or read before from the Star Wars universe.

I also hear from several sources that, no matter what you may hear to the contrary, no director has been officially attached to the project.

Meanwhile, there isn't much news regarding the other big Star Wars projects currently in development.

A spoofy cartoon TV series, Detours, was announced in August, spearheaded by Seth Green and the other creators of Robot Chicken. No release dates or networks were revealed, but Disney has said that it envisions some sort of Star Wars presence on its Disney XD channel. I wouldn't be surprised if Detours landed there.

Disney is paying how much for LucasFilm!?!?

Lastly, there's the live action series, which has been bubbling around since 2008 and which is supposed to take place between Episodes 3 and 4, when Luke Skywalker is growing up.

As I reported earlier, Lucasfilm was still talking in enthusiastic terms about Star Wars: Underworld less than a year ago. At that time, the show had a lot of scripts in the can but no financing. But if there's one thing that Disney has, it's money. Still, insiders tell me it's too soon to expect any announcements on either series.

Guess we'll just have to pray that Jar Jar has nothing to do with any of 'em.

Never mind about Star Wars 7. Who is going to be Bob Iger's No. 2?

So when exactly did Bob Iger let George Lucas now that he was interested in acquiring Lucasfilm Ltd. ? It wasn't " ... a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away." But -- rather -- last May in Orlando, when both Iger & Lucas were at Disney's Hollywood Studios to take part in an elaborate opening ceremony for "Star Tours: The Adventures Continue."

According to what company insiders have told me, during the rehearsal process for this opening ceremony, George reportedly told Bob that he really appreciated all of the effort that the Imagineers had put into the new multi-branching version of the "Star Tours" attraction. Which would help keep the Star Wars characters evergreen and -- more importantly -- relevant for the next generation of theme park goers.

Lucas then allegedly let slip that he was giving some semi-serious thought about stepping away from Lucasfilm Ltd., or at least the day-to-day operations of that company. But the only problem with doing that was that George would then have to name a successor.

It was at this point that Iger supposedly revealed that he too had succession issues on the brain. With Bob reportedly confiding to George that -- as part of the new employment agreement that he was at that time negotiating with Disney's Board of Directors -- that he didn't want to repeat Michael Eisner's mistake. Which was to stay on in the top job at Disney longer than he was actually effective. Which is why Iger was considering exiting the Company entirely by June of 2016.

So here you have two very powerful men in Hollywood who have built up and then maintained major media companies who now discover that they have something in common. In that both Bob or George are eyeballing the exit.

It was this piece of common turf, that there was more to life than just maintaining intellectual property, that reportedly opened the door to the Lucasfilm Ltd. acquisition.

Now you'd think that most everyone at the Mouse House would be happy that R2D2 & C3PO are about to become Disney characters. But the way I hear it, both Tom Staggs & Jay Rasulo aren't entirely enthusiastic about this acquisition. But not for the reasons that you might think.

Why For? Well, it's not the $4.05 billion that The Walt Disney Company is paying for Lucasfilm Ltd. (I'm told that George originally asked for a multiple of that amount. Something much closer to the $7.4 billion that Disney paid for Pixar Animation Studios back in January of 2006). But -- rather -- Kathleen Kennedy, the current Co-Chair of Lucasfilm. Who will soon become the President of Lucasfilm and report directly to Alan Horn, the Chairman of Walt Disney Studios once the Lucasfilm acquisition is complete.

"And why does Kathleen concern Jay and Tom?," you ask. For the very same reason that Rasulo & Staggs have been nervously eyeing Alan Horn. The fact that Bob Iger has yet to name his successor.

To explain: It's long been assumed that Bob would eventually officially designate either Jay or Tom as his No. 2. This is the main reason that Iger reportedly had Rasulo & Staggs swap jobs back in November of 2009, with Jay (who had previously been Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts) replacing Tom as the Company's senior executive vice president and chief financial officer. While Staggs assumed Rasulo's old position as head of Parks and Resorts.

Company insiders had always assumed that Bob had made Jay & Tom switch jobs because he was looking to round out their resumes. Make sure that both men had the necessary on-the-job experience before he then named one of them his No. 2. But now that Alan Horn (who -- prior to being named Chairman of Walt Disney Studios back in May -- had previously been President and COO of Warner Bros. Entertainment) is on the lot and Kathleen Kennedy (Who was one of the co-founders of Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment as well as a partner in the Kennedy / Marshall Company) is about to enter the Mouse House ... Well, Alan & Kathleen are both Hollywood heavyweights who have lots of experience when it comes to running major entertainment companies. And Jay & Tom's concern is that -- when it comes time for Disney's Board of Director to name Bob Iger's successor -- the Board may opt to go with more experienced execs like Horn & Kennedy rather than reward loyal longtime Disney officials who've risen up through the ranks like Rasulo & Staggs.

Long story short, folks: There's a lot more going on here than just Walt Disney Studios acquiring the rights to make "Star Wars 7." Especially since March of this year (which is when John Pepper stepped down as the Chairman of The Walt Disney Company and Bob Iger became both Disney's Chairman & CEO), there has been all sorts of rumors in-house about who Iger is going to tap to be his No. 2.

Mind you, I don't expect that Bob will pull a Palpatine and have Jay, Tom, Alan & Kathleen go at it with light sabers. But while Star Wars fans will be waiting to see who Kathleen & George select to be the writer and/or director of Episode 7, Mouse House watchers (knowing that Bob Iger has already announced that he will be stepping down as Disney's CEO in March of 2015 and then exiting the Company entirely by June of 2016) will spend the next few months sifting for clues as to who's going to be named Iger's successor.

Mi chiedo come faranno a fare eventuali cofanetti.

Disney Buys Lucasfilm For $4 Billion! STAR WARS EPISODE VII Scheduled For 2015 Release! Updated As Additional Info Comes In!
Published at: Oct 30, 2012 3:39:22 PM CDT

Beaks here...

In a move that's sure to spawn a good deal of polite and substantial discourse on these here internets, Disney has announced that it has purchased Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion and stock. Kathleen Kennedy will be promoted to President of Lucasfilm, and will report to current Disney chair Alan Horn.

And then there's this: the studio is targeting 2015 for the release of a seventh STAR WARS film.

I can't access the conference call at the moment, but Moises Chiullan has the salient details.

[Moisés/"Monty Cristo" here with UPDATES:

Here are a few VERY interesting bullet points from the call as I've posted on my site...

1) Disney now owns all LucasFilm IP: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Skywalker Sound, LucasArts (games), Lucas Books/Animation/Licensing/Marketing/Online, and ILM (the company that once owned Pixar), as well as the trademark for "Droid". Disney will now own all intellectual property rights with some distribution and licensing "entaglements" based on existing deals, much like how Universal still has the Marvel theme park license for a while yet and Sony makes Spider-Man movies.

2) Much was made of Disney's global licensed product and distribution reach making better use of LucasFilm licenses, with all emphasis on the $4.05 billion paid being relative to the value of the Star Wars franchise. For example, this would imply that any Star Wars (and Indiana Jones?) licensed comic books will now go under Marvel once the current Star Wars/Dark Horse contract ends, and video games would go through Disney Interactive.

UPDATE 1:: Bob Iger: "We're likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console. We'll look opportunistically at console, most likely in licensing rather than publishing, but we think that given the nature of these characters and how well known they are, and the storytelling, that they lend themselves quite nicely, as they've already demonstrated to the other platforms" ...so maybe Star Wars comics are safe at Dark Horse? ...I want to say no way in hell, when you own one of the two megalithic comic publishers...

UPDATE 3:: The Star Wars 1313 game is staying on track, per a LucasArts statement.

3) Disney plans to release a new Star Wars movie every 2-3 years starting in 2015. All of them will be in 3D.

4) Star Wars Episodes 7, 8, and 9 will be a trilogy. The treatment is done, is in "early stage development", and the movies are to be released every other year.

5) ILM will remain a studio-agnostic gun for hire. Disney does not want to change anything about how they operate.

6) Fox retains ownership and distribution of all existing Star Wars movies (until that contract expires... UPDATE 4:: Episode 4 is owned "in perpituity" and all other existing movies are owned through 2020). Disney can use any and all characters from the entire Star Wars canon in all of its new movies. All future films will be distributed by Disney, unlike Paramount retaining partial distribution rights when Marvel was acquired. No mention was made of who now owns the Star Wars Holiday Special.
