Sono Deadline e Variety a dare la notizia: i Marvel Studios e la Walt Disney Pictures hanno fissato per il 26 luglio del 2013 l'uscita del sequel di Thor, attualmente intitolato Thor 2.

Chris Hemsworth interpreterà ancora una volta l'eroe protagonista del film, mentre Kenneth Branagh lascerà l'incarico di regista: ora quindi i Marvel Studios sono a caccia di un nuovo regista. Nel film potrebbe esserci anche Natalie Portman, che ha un contratto di opzione.

Branagh ha diretto il primo film, che è stato riconvertito in 3D e ha incassato 437 milioni di dollari complessivi in tutto il mondo (viene considerato un modesto successo). L'addio del regista sarebbe stato amichevole, era piuttosto evidente che Branagh non si sarebbe legato al franchise.

Nel 2013 uscirà già un altro film Marvel, ovvero Iron Man 3, a maggio. Il sequel di Thor andrà quindi a piazzarsi nell'estate avanzata, nello slot coperto quest'anno da Captain America: il Primo Vendicatore.

Brian Kirk to Direct Thor 2?

Brian Kirk is in talks to direct Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios' Thor 2, Variety reports.

Kirk, best known for directing three episodes in the first season of HBO's "Game of Thrones," has also directed episodes of "Dexter," "Luther" and "Boardwalk Empire."

Set for release on July 26, 2013, Thor 2 will presumably move into production very shortly and studio confirmation either way should be forthcoming. To feature a script by Don Payne, the film will follow Disney and Marvel's Iron Man 3 in the summer of 2013. That film is set for release on May 3rd of that year.

Prosegue lo sviluppo del sequel di Thor, dopo il successo del film con Chris Hemsworth nei cinema di tutto il mondo alcuni mesi fa. Ma chi dirigerà il film, ufficialmente già programmato per il 2013?

Qualche settimana fa Variety aveva segnalato che il regista di alcuni episodi di Game of Thrones Brian Kirk era in trattative con la Marvel: Kirk ha lasciato il tavolo dopo poco tempo, a causa di "divergenze creative e finanziarie emerse durante la discussione".

Ora, secondo un report di Deadline (poi confermato da Variety), i produttori sono in trattative con Patty Jenkins, già regista di Monster e del pilot della serie The Killing. Thor sarebbe il secondo lungometraggio per la regista, e una scelta decisamente interessante per i Marvel Studios. Nulla è ancora ufficiale, e così Variety segnala una shortlist di registi contattati o desiderati: Drew Goddard, James McTeigue, Noam Murro, e Breck Eisner.


Nel frattempo, il produttore Kevin Feige ha svelato alcuni dettagli della trama a EW:

Porteremo Thor in nuovi mondi, letteralmente. Il film seguirà principalmente il viaggio di un personaggio, il suo rapporto con Jane Foster e di come questa nuova dinamica con suo padre sta funzionando. Inoltre, scopriremo quali sono gli estremi dei Nove Mondi.

E' quindi possibile che nel nuovo film tornino sia Natalie Portman che Anthony Hopkins nei rispettivi ruoli di Jane Foster e Odino.

Patty Jenkins Confirmed to Direct Thor 2

Marvel Studios announced today that Patty Jenkins will direct Thor 2, which will be released in theatres on Friday, November 15, 2013. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman will return to star in the film along with Tom Hiddleston. Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce the sequel to this summer's blockbuster Thor, which has grossed over $448 million worldwide to date.

Patty Jenkins previously directed Monster starring Charlize Theron, who won an Academy Award for her performance in the film. Jenkins, who received an Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of AMC's acclaimed series "The Killing," has also directed episodes of "Entourage" and "Arrested Development." Most recently, she directed "Pearl," one of the five short films that comprise Lifetime's original movie "Five."

In addition to Thor 2, Marvel Studios is currently scheduled to release Marvel's The Avengers on May 4, 2012, and Iron Man 3 which is slated for release on May 3, 2013.

Kenneth Branagh Shares More Of His Thoughts On Patty Jenkins Directing Thor 2

During a recent interview Kenneth Branagh spoke a little bit about Patty Jenkins replacing him on Thor 2, as well as saying his time dealing with Marvel was happy and collaborative.

Kenneth Branagh sat down with Vulture to talk about his upcoming film My Week With Marilyn. In the interview Branagh was once again asked about Patty Jenkins taking his place as director for the upcoming sequel to his smash Summer hit, Thor, saying that he hasn't spoken to her but they have exchanged letter on good sentiments. He also, unlike Mickey Rourke, talked about what a joyful collaboration it was to work with the people at Marvel.

Said Branagh:

"We haven't spoken, we've exchanged letters, really just saying "well done" and "how thrilling." I think it’s a great choice and I'm really excited about that, and I think Marvel have always been so imaginative about the way they match these projects with directors who may have very particular things to bring to them but may not be superficially a natural kind of fit. But my gut tells me this is a tremendous choice, so I'm very excited. I'm also thrilled that the second movie is being made, and I just think her in combination with those actors is such a terrific thing. And I think she'll get on in the way that I did with the Marvel guys, which was a very happy, creative collaboration."

Chris Hemsworth is set to return as Thor The God Of Thunder, with Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston returning as well as Jane Foster and Loki respectively. Thor 2 will hit theaters on November November 15, 2013.

Kenneth Branagh Not Ruling Out A Return To Direct Another Movie For Marvel Studios

Talking to Variety, the director of THOR looks back on working on the movie and reveals his interest in teaming up with Marvel Studios again in future.

When it was announced that Kenneth Branagh would direct THOR, a lot of scepticism followed. While he had experience with Shakespearean fare like Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing, the thought of him helming a CGI heavy comic book blockbuster left many puzzled. Of course, the Marvel Studios production went on to be the highest grossing superhero movie of 2011 and currently sits with an impressive 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It turns out that Branagh was actually desperate to helm a movie like such as this one and leapt at the chance when the opportunity arose. "Across 20 years of making films, I hadn't spent a significant amount of time in that community, and I wanted to do that. Of all the American comics, 'Thor' was the only one I was really familiar with from my childhood, and it intrigued me, maybe because it was a bit more European, with those Viking helmets and its basis in Norse myth. The scale was exciting, and I did love the character and the story. It had depth and gravity in addition to being an entertaining ride."

While it was at first believed he'd been hired because of his experience with the work of Shakespeare (after all, it was only a few years ago that Marvel dropped that type of dialogue for the character in the relaunched THOR comic book series by J. Michael Straczynski in 2006) it turns out that his approach was actually, "to bring to it a sense of fun, but also to take the process of making it as seriously as I would doing Shakespeare." Branagh describes the experience as "a joy" and as we already know, only turned down the sequel due to timing. That doesn't mean he doesn't want to work with Marvel Studios again though. "I certainly wouldn't rule out a return to Marvel; we had an excellent collaboration."

Talking to Coming Soon, Kenneth Branagh (currently earning critical acclaim for his role as Sir Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marilyn) has revealed that he's yet to reach a decision with Marvel Studios as to whether he'll serve as a producer on THOR 2.

Here's what he told the site when quizzed about the possibility of still being involved with the movie after passing on the chance to direct. "I think that really it's over to the guys with that," he said. "Timing-wise, it just wasn't going to work for me, and that's absolutely been born out by the kind of year I've had which has been very busy, but I'm very interested. I'll be speaking to the guys when I get back. They're shooting in Shepperton near me, so no doubt, we'll be hooking up and I'll be as little or as much of it as they'd like."

And if not as a producer, how about returning for an acting role? "Why don't you suggest it to them?" he laughed. It's clear that there's no bad blood between Branagh and the studio (unlike actors such as Terrence Howard, Ed Norton and Mickey Rourke) and he's now looking forward to the opportunities his work on the financially and critically successful THOR has presented him with. "I mean, I never assume anything about these things, but I would say, listen, you just noticed it in terms of a lot of people are sending things, and that's great. I'm very, very pleased about that and I want to make sure that I have as good a time as I had on "Thor." I'm weighing things up carefully, but in the meantime, I'm having a great time learning all over again about screen acting and enjoying it hugely."
