Published by HarperCollins in 2011, the book centers on a silverback gorilla named Ivan who lives in a cage in a shopping mall along with an elephant named Stella and a stray dog called Bob. Ivan does not remember life before the mall, but when a baby elephant enters and Ivan finds himself taking care of her, he begins to rediscover his previous life and concocts a plan to take the baby elephant away from their abusive owner.
Applegate, who also created the late 1990s book series Animorphs with her husband, Michael Grant, based the story on a real-life gorilla named Ivan who spent 27 years in a Washington mall before being transferred to the Atlanta Zoo.
The book has spent 60 consecutive weeks (and counting) on the New York Times best-seller list and has won several awards.
A search for a writer is underway to pen the script for what is intended to be a live-action movie.
Applegate is repped by Jason Dravis of the Monteiro Rose Dravis Agency. Dravis also reps Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins and originally met Shearmur when he was setting up Collins’ book at Lionsgate. Shearmur was Lionsgate’s president of production at the time.
Stephen Meinen, VP of Allison Shearmur Productions, will work on the project with Shearmur.

It was revealed earlier this year that Walt Disney Pictures has secured the rights to Katherine Applegate's children's book The One and Only Ivan. Today, Variety reports that School of Rock and Nacho Libre scribe Mike White is in negotiations to direct the big screen adaptation.

Illustrated by Patricia Castelao, the Newberry Medal winning book was published in 2011 and is officially described as follows:

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Mike Newell, the director behind Four Weddings and a Funeral and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, has signed on to direct Disney’s adaptation of The One and Only Ivan, the Newbery Medal-winning book written by Katherine Applegate.

Allison Shearmur, who produced the live-action hit Cinderella for the studio and is serving as a producer on Star Wars: Rogue One, is producing the project, which has a script by Mike White (School of Rock).

Illustrated by Patricia Castelao, Ivan won the 2013 Newbery Medal and has sold over 1 million copies. Disney picked up the rights to the book in 2014.

Sam Dickerman is overseeing the project for Disney.

Allison Shearmur Productions executives Stephen Meinen and Bryan Oh also are working on the project with Shearmur, who was also an executive producer of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Newell, whose other credits include the Johnny Depp crime drama Donnie Brasco, last directed 2012’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, which starred Ralph Fiennes. Newell is repped by WME and the U.K.’s Independent Talent Group.

Bryan Cranston Joins Angelina Jolie in Disney's 'The One and Only Ivan' (Exclusive)

Thea Sharrock, director of the tearjerker Me Before You, is helming the live-action/CG hybrid, which also has The Florida Project breakout Brooklynn Prince and Ariana Greenblatt, one of the stars of Disney Channel's Stuck in the Middle, on the call sheet.

Published by HarperCollins in 2011, the book centers on a silverback gorilla named Ivan (Rockwell) who lives in a cage in a shopping mall along with an elephant named Stella (Jolie) and a stray dog called Bob. Ivan does not remember life before the mall, but when a baby elephant named Ruby enters and Ivan finds himself taking care of her, he begins to rediscover his previous life and concocts a plan to take the baby elephant away from their abusive owner.

Cranston will play the desperate owner of a failing circus.

Mike White wrote the script. Jolie is producing along with Brigham Taylor. Allison Shearmur, who recently died, will retain a producer credit on the movie.

Cranston, who was nominated for an Oscar for his work in Trumbo, is currently on the London stage at the National Theatre starring in Network, the adaptation of the 1970s classic Paddy Chayefsky film. He also voices a character in Wes Anderson's stop-motion movie Isle of Dogs, which opens March 23.

Helen Mirren and Danny DeVito join The One and Only Ivan as production begins

Production has begun at Pinewood Studios outside London on Walt Disney Pictures‘ live-action/CG hybrid The One and Only Ivan, based on the award-winning children’s book by Katherine Applegate. Award-winning Danny DeVito and Helen Mirren have joined the voice cast, which includes the previously-announced Angelina Jolie, Sam Rockwell, and Brooklynn Prince. The live-action cast includes Bryan Cranston, Ramon Rodriquez, Arianna Greenblatt, Indira Varma, and Eleanor Matsuura.

The One and Only Ivan is being directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You) from the screenplay written by two-time Independent Spirit Award winner Mike White (Pitch Perfect 3, The School of Rock). Oscar and three-time Golden Globe winner Angelina Jolie (First They Killed My Father, Maleficent) is producing along with the late Allison Shearmur (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Cinderella) and Brigham Taylor (Christopher Robin, The Jungle Book).

Based on the true story of a uniquely-talented gorilla and the other animals who share a communal habitat at a suburban shopping mall, The One and Only Ivan is an unforgettable tale about the beauty of friendship, the power of visualization and the significance of the place we call home. Applegate’s book, a #1 New York Times’ bestseller, has won numerous awards, including the Newberry Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children in 2013.

The One and Only Ivan’s illustrated novel is inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan and is told from his point-of-view. Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

Il trailer esce nei prossimi giorni e durerà 2 minuti e 23 secondi.

Dal sito Trailer Track:

IN THE PIPELINE: First Trailer For Disney's 'The One And Only Ivan'

Most probably intended to go out with Mulan this week, prior to the film’s delay, the first trailer for Thea Sharrock and Disney’s adaptation of The One And Only Ivan has been rated today by the UK’s BBFC. Since cinemas across the UK and the U.S. are now closed, we wouldn’t expect this trailer to hit the big screen any time soon, however it is likely we will see this online in the coming days…stay tuned.

An adaptation of the award-winning book about one very special gorilla, Disney’s THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN is an unforgettable tale about the beauty of friendship, the power of visualization and the significance of the place one calls home. Ivan is a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from and where he ultimately wants to be.

Starring Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren, Ramon Rodriguez, Ariana Greenblatt, Chaka Khan, Mike White, Ron Funches, Philippa Soo and Bryan Cranston, the film is currently due for release in the U.S. and the UK on August 14.

More Movies Might Go to Disney+ Following Artemis Fowl

Bob Iger Says More Movies Might Go to Disney+ Following Artemis Fowl.

Following Disney’s decision to move the official release of Kenneth Branagh’s Artemis Fowl to Disney+, former CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that there are indeed more upcoming movies that might also forgo their theatrical releases and head directly to the streaming service. However, this format will still depend on the world’s current situation in the coming months. As for the House of Mouse’s high-profile films like Black Widow and Mulan, Iger assures fans that these films will definitely still make their debuts in the theaters.

Potential straight-to-Disney+ fare could include their upcoming releases like The New Mutants, Pixar’s Soul, The One and Only Ivan, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Raya And The Last Dragon.

“There are some we’ve decided to put on Disney+,” Iger said (via Barron’s). “We already announced one, ‘Artemis Fowl,’ that would have been released in theaters. Others we’ve simply delayed. In some cases we’ve moved things onto Disney+ faster than we would have. ‘Frozen 2’ was one of them, but ‘Onward’ would be the biggest example. It was in theaters when this happened. We moved to a pay-per-view period for a couple of weeks where people could buy it and own it. And then we ended up putting it on Disney+.”

He added, “In terms of movies going ahead after Artemis, there may be a few more that we end up putting directly onto Disney+, but for the most part a lot of the big tentpole Disney films, we’ll simply wait for slots. In some cases we’ve announced new ones already, but later on in the calendar.”

Mi pare giusto mandare questi film minori su Disney+.

The One and Only Ivan Set for Disney+ Streaming Debut

It’s been two years since Disney’s film adaptation of The One and Only Ivan wrapped production and as audiences wonder which films will make their theatrical release dates and which are pushed back amidst the global pandemic, the studio has elected to set the film for a Disney+ debut on August 21.

Award-winning Danny DeVito and Helen Mirren lead the voice cast which also includes Angelina Jolie, Sam Rockwell, and Brooklynn Prince, while the live-action cast includes Bryan Cranston, Ramon Rodriquez, Arianna Greenblatt, Indira Varma, and Eleanor Matsuura.

“The world has changed in a heartbeat,” director Thea Sharrock said in a statement. “People all over the globe have shared important, life changing experiences in ways we have not seen for a century. In response to this, I am so happy that we can share Katherine Applegate’s delightful and original story, The One and Only Ivan with the world this August on Disney+, bringing some joy through this unique movie of true friendship, inspired by a true story.”

The film becomes the second Disney feature project to skip a theatrical release and head straight for its streaming platform after the newly-released Artemis Fowl adaptation helmed by Kenneth Branagh (Thor, Murder on the Orient Express), with the studio reportedly eying other titles to skip theaters.
