Exclusive : Disney developing sequel to Hocus Pocus

Any fans of “Hocus Pocus”, the 1993 flick starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as three vacuum-riding witches doing battle with trick or treaters on their night of their resurrection? What about you? Yes! You! The one trying to pop the nose wart with the dislodged F5 key on his iPad console? You liked it, didn’t ya?

Actually, I remember liking it too. Don’t think I’ve ever seen it since it was a new release rental in the local video library – this is going back some fifteen years or so – but I do recall it being a fun family flick. And if I’m not mistaken, introduced me – and several other ‘What is happening to me?’ readers – to the rather foxy Vinessa Shaw (who would go on to play a much more saucier role in Stanley Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut”).

Exclusive: ‘Hocus Pocus 2’ Moving Forward at Disney+ with Writer Jen D’Angelo

Jen D’Angelo, who served as a writer and co-producer on Workaholics, has been hired to write the script for Hocus Pocus 2, which is in the works at Disney Plus, Collider has exclusively learned.

The original Hocus Pocus may not have cast a spell on the box office when it hit theaters back in 1993, but the film has endured over the years to become something of a cult classic.

Sources say that D’Angelo has been tasked with finding a way to bring back the original cast of Bette Midler as Winifred, Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah, and Kathy Najimy as Mary. None of them are attached at the moment, but the studio is hopeful that they’ll be involved with the sequel in some capacity. Since the project is still in early development at Disney’s forthcoming streaming service, it remains unclear whether they’ll be the main characters, or whether we’ll see them pass the proverbial torch to a new generation of witches.

Kenny Ortega directed the original from a script by Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert, based on a story by Garris and David Kirschner, the latter of whom produced alongside Steven Haft. Omri Katz played the young male lead of Max, and he was joined in Salem by Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, and Doug Jones.

D’Angelo served as a writer-producer on the Fox sitcom LA to Vegas and the CBS sitcom Happy Together, and she was also credited as an associate producer on last year’s action-comedy Game Over, Man! on Netflix. D’Angelo is also an actress who played the recurring character of Veronica on the Facebook series *Loosely Exactly Nicole. She’s represented by UTA, Artists First and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.

For a complete list of Disney Plus offerings, click here. The streaming service launches on November 12, so cancel your plans that weekend, because it’s going to keep you busy.

Bette Midler Assures She's on Board (Er, Broom) for New Hocus Pocus Movie: 'We Wanna Fly Again'

At Bette Midler‘s annual Hulaween event in New York City on Thursday night, Entertainment Tonight chatted with the multifaceted legend about whether she would be reprising her role as Winifred Sanderson in the recently announced follow-up to her 1993 classic Halloween film, Hocus Pocus.

“Oh my goodness me. Oh I hope they get to me before I’m a corpse,” joked Midler, 73, who was dressed as classic Hollywood legend Mae West for Halloween. “We wanna fly again. I hope Disney+ is a big success and I hope we get to do it, because [Winnie] is, of course, one of my favorite characters.”

The Emmy, Tony and Grammy winner went on to say she and her fellow “sistahs” — Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — always chat and “laugh” about their memories from the movie whenever they see each other: “We say, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be great if?’ Because all of us had pretty much the same experience on it.”

Da BadTaste.it

Sarah Jessica Parker confirms cast’s return for Hocus Pocus 2

Last month it was revealed that Disney+ is currently developing the long-awaited sequel to the 1993 classic horror-comedy Hocus Pocus. Because of this, fans are wondering if Hocus Pocus 2 would also feature the original cast or not, with the streaming service hopeful to get Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy involved with the production of the sequel.

After more than a week since the news broke out Disney+ might have already reached out to the original stars, with Parker answering fan questions about Hocus Pocus 2 on Instagram, revealing that they’ve all said yes and are now waiting for the next step.

Da Variety

Adam Shankman to Direct ‘Hocus Pocus 2’ at Disney Plus (EXCLUSIVE)

Adam Shankman will direct “Hocus Pocus 2” at Disney Plus, sources tell Variety.

The film — a sequel to 1993’s cult hit “Hocus Pocus” starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — was written by “Workaholics” writer and co-producer Jen D’Angelo. Lynn Harris will produce.

Shankman is currently in pre-production on Disney’s “Enchanted” sequel, titled “Disenchanted.” It’s yet to be determined which film will be in the works first.

The original “Hocus Pocus” cast members are not attached to the sequel, but Disney is hopeful that they will become involved in some capacity. Sources say that ideally the trio of actresses will reprise their roles, rather than having to completely reboot the first film.

“Hocus Pocus” followed three witch sisters who, after having been cursed since 1693 in Salem, are inadvertently resurrected 300 years later by a boy whose family has moved from Los Angeles to Salem. However, as the witches try to acclimate to the 20th Century, they discover — to their horror — that Halloween has become a holiday. The film was not a huge box office success, scoring just $39 million worldwide on a $28 million budget, but has since gained a cult following through the DVD market and syndication, especially during the month of October.

Though the original is categorized as a family comedy, it did feature Midler’s memorable musical number “I Put a Spell On You.” Given Shankman’s choreographic background, the door could be left open for another type of musical number.

Shankman, best known for directing 2007’s “Hairspray,” “Step Up” and “A Walk to Remember,” most recently helmed “What Men Want” starring Taraji P. Henson. He was the choreographer for a number of movies, including “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “The Wedding Planner” and “Catch Me If You Can.” Shankman is repped by UTA.
