The 10-part series will tell the origin story of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine.

A reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic underwater adventure 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is heading to Disney+ in a new 10-part live-action series.

Unveiled on Monday, Nautilus, produced by U.K. banners Moonriver TV and Seven Stories, is set to give the famed 19th century novel a new spin, telling the origin story of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine, The Nautilus. An Indian prince robbed of his birth right and family, a prisoner of the East India Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces which have taken everything from him, Nemo set sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring vessel, battling foes and discovering magical underwater worlds.

It’s not the first time Disney has dipped its toe into Verne’s tale, with 1954 film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea famously starring James Mason as Nemo and Kirk Douglas as monster-harpooner Ned Land.

Developed and co-produced by Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand and Seven Stories’ Anand Tucker, Nautilus is written and executive produced by James Dormer (Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands) and is executive produced by Johanna Devereaux, director of scripted original content for EMEA at Disney+. Filming is set to start in early 2022.

“Jules Verne’s story is a beloved classic all around the world,” said Devereaux. “It’s a huge privilege to bring the Nautilus and her crew to life again in such a bold, exciting way, with a diverse team of creative talent and on-screen characters. The series will be breathtaking, action-packed and a huge amount of fun.”

First unveiled by Deveraux from the 2021 Edinburgh TV Festival, Nautilus adds another notch on the growing European slate for Disney+, which last year said it was targeting 50 productions commissioned from the continent by 2024. Having announced 13 titles from the U.K., France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands earlier in 2021, alongside a new unscripted series with David Beckham, the platform is already nearing a third of this target.

Alongside Nautilus, Disney used the Edinburgh TV Festival to make casting announcements on two of its previously unveiled Disney+ productions.

Nathan Stewart-Jarrett — soon to be seen in Jordan Peele’s Candyman reboot — is to take the lead in U.K. Star original Culprits, a darkly comic heist series from exec producer Stephen Garrett (The Undoing, The Night Manager) and filmmaker J Blakeson (I Care A Lot, The Disappearance of Alice Creed).

Meanwhile, Alita: Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar will lead another U.K. Star original, the romantic comedy action thriller Wedding Season. The genre-busting series about two people who shouldn’t be together, but who can’t stay away from one another, begins production later this month and will be shooting in Scotland, Manchester, London and Las Vegas.

Original live-action-drama series Nautilus, based on the Jules Verne’s classic novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, is a ten-part live-action adventure series about the origin story of Verne’s most iconic character, Captain Nemo, and his famous submarine, The Nautilus.

In the series, Nemo is an Indian Prince robbed of his birth right and family, a prisoner of the East India Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces which have taken everything from him. But once he sets sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring Nautilus, he not only battles with his enemy, he also discovers a magical underwater world.

Developed and co-produced by Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand and Seven Stories’ Anand Tucker, Nautilus is written and executive-produced by James Dormer (Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands) and is being executive-produced by Johanna Devereaux for Disney. Filming is set to take place early 2022.

Sulla carta questa potrebbe essere la prima serie tv che davvero mi interessa da quando esiste Disney+
Per una volta dico: brava Disney! Ora però non lo trasformate nell’ennesima pagliacciata banalotta alla DisneyChannel, vi prego!

Mi auguro si punti più al mistero, magia e avventura esotica alla Jules Verne e meno allo steampunk, sci-fi e robottoni. Il Mistero della Pietra Azzurra non mi ha mai colpito per questi particolari.

Da notare che è una produzione britannica (possibile budget inferiore alle produzioni Usa?) e che i produttori hanno a catalogo prodotti medio-piccoli, di cui (a rapido sguardo su imdb) nessuno di genere paragonabile a Nautilus. Difficile capire cosa aspettarsi.

crediamo che usino produzioni britanniche perché sono molto apprezzate in USA e la Disney punta spesso su produttori britannici
poi magari gente che non ha alle spalle certi kolossal possono saper usare le risorse, magari più ristrette , di cui dispongono, in modo più proficuo... vedremo

Disney+ has officially begun filming on their upcoming 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea series, Nautilus, the studio announced today.

Cameras are currently rolling in Australia at Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland. and is produced by Xavier Marchand’s Moonriver Studios and Anand Tucker’s Seven Stories, is one of the streamer’s most high profile to be made outside of the U.S., as it targets 60 international originals over the next two years.

Shazad Latif, who boarded the series late last year, is playing Captain Nemo. Today, the studio also announced new cast members including Georgia Flood (Anzac Girls), who plays Humility Lucas, a privileged daughter of the British Empire who is taken hostage on board the Nautilus, and Thierry Frémont (Allied) as Gustave Benoit, a French engineer and architect of the submarine.

Other new cast members include Pacharo Mzembe, Arlo Green, Tyrone Ngatai, Ling Cooper Tang, Andrew Shaw, Ashan Kumar, Céline Menville and Kayden Price.

Meno male qualche serie originale Disney+ va avanti, sia Epic che il prequel della bella e la bestia sono stati scartati... Poi questo progetto a me piace un sacco!

Disney has taken a long-term lease at Pinewood Studios as part of its ever-increasing UK presence. Streaming channel Disney+ has upped the level of UK-based original content commissions too: currently in production is Lookout Point’s hefty swashbuckling drama The Ballad of Renegade Nell and eight-episode updated iteration of The Full Monty.

The post-production work on Seven Stories’ and Moonriver TV’s Nautilus, now filming in Queensland for Disney+, will be done in the UK.

Ma perché?? Forse puntano a pochi contenuti ma buoni? Non capisco... Ne hanno iniziate mille... E non procede niente! O poco, comuqnue... La serie su Gaston e LeTont, la serie sulle fiabe di cui era stato girato il pilota, Spiderwick...

pensiamo che questo Disney+ alla fin fine avrà la sorte di Disney Channel... tante promesse, niente di interessante... noi ve l'avevamo detto sin dagli esordi che Disney+ era una fregatura...
anche perchè il senso di Disney+ sarebbe quello di rilanciare le loro proprietà (tipo appunto Nautilus, Zorro, la serie Epic o Book of Enchantment ecc ma anche lanciare cartoni animati - lungometraggi e serie - maggiormente sperimentali e per adulti) eppure non vanno avanti, si bloccano sempre e non procedono con nulla di interessante... sinceramente avere un'offerta così risicata con soli Classici e poco altro (che comunque tutti hanno in dvd o blue ray) ci sembra proprio la fiera della superficialità... che senso ha abbonarsi se non danno i contenuti che il pubblico vuole?

Nautilus, the ten-part series inspired by Jules Verne’s beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has found a new home.

The series has landed at AMC, where it will air in 2024 as well as on AMC+. The move comes after the Disney+ UK commission was axed by the streamer earlier this summer as part of its content removal plan.

Nautilus tells the origin story of Captain Nemo: an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.

It is the latest series axed by Disney as part of its move to cut streaming costs – the Mouse House is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion – to find a new home. The Spiderwick Chronicles, which was similarly canceled at Disney+, found a spot on Roku.

The series was shot in Australia, beginning last year, with supports from the Australian government and is distributed by Disney Entertainment. It is produced by Xavier Marchand’s Moonriver Studios and Anand Tucker’s Seven Stories.

Shazad Latif plays Nemo, the Indian Prince, who sets sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring Nautilus, as he not only battles with his enemy, he also discovers a magical underwater world.

Also starring are Georgia Flood and Thierry Frémont, with Pacharo Mzembe, Arlo Green, Tyrone Ngatai, Ling Cooper Tang, Andrew Shaw, Ashan Kumar, Céline Menville and Kayden Price rounding out the cast.

James Dormer writes and exec produces alongside Johanna Devereaux, Chris Loveall, Colleen Woodcock and Daisy Gilbert. Cameron Welsh serves as producer and Michael Matthews is the lead director.

“Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes,” said Ben Davis, EVP of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. “We are looking forward to bringing it to AMC+ and AMC as a special television event next year.”
