Marvel Entertainment ha creato la nuova divisione Marvel Television per occuparsi di tutti i progetti riguardanti il piccolo schermo: direct-to-video, serie animate, serie live-action. Al comando è stato scelto Jeph Loeb, scrittore e produttore di Smallville e Heroes, il quale ha rilasciato un'intervista che riporto da Badtaste:

Dopo l'acquisizione della Disney è sembrato chiaro che lo studio fosse interessato a trasporre i personaggi Marvel sul piccolo schermo. C'era già una relazione in corso dentro al mondo dell'animazione, la Disney ha cosi tanti network (la Abc, Abc Family, Disney Channel, Disney XD, ESPN) e quindi un mucchio di opportunità per entrare in questo media improvvisamente sono divenute disponibili per la Marvel. [...] Loro mi hanno offerto questa incredibile opportunità con questa nuova divisione, lavorando con i network Disney, per portare il catalogo Marvel sugli schermi televivi.

Sull'animazione che vedremo da qui ai prossimi anni:

Beh, ci sono tre aree differenti dell'animazione che noi continueremo ad esplorare per lavorarci: la prima sono i film d'animazione direct-to-video, come Planet Hulk, che adoro. La seconda prevede il continuare a espandere le aree dell'animazione, attualmente hanno Marvel Super Hero Squad, che è su Cartoon Network. In autunno ci sarà Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes su Disney XD, e stiamo sviluppando Ultimate Spider-Man, sempre per Disney XD. Ci sono anche altri progetti nell'animazione che stiamo sviluppando ma di cui ancora non siamo pronti a parlare. [...]

Loeb ha poi parlato brevemente delle serie live action che sono, ovviamente, le più attese dai fan:

Stiamo lavorando con la Abc e la Abc Family per trovare le proprietà giuste, i personaggi giusti e poi svilupparli. Per iniziare, esploreremo il campo della serie tv di un ora simile alle serie a cui ho lavorato, come Smallville e Lost.

Marvel taps unexploited territories, characters

MIPTV: Comic book giant Marvel is developing a host of new TV franchises following its acquisition by Disney, as well as animé versions of some of its best-known characters.

Marvel Animation president Eric Rollman told C21 the company is now looking to take its properties into markets where Marvel is unexploited, such as Japan, India and China.

"There is great room for us to grow our brands in these countries," he said, adding that traditionally these markets have been difficult to produce product in, particularly Japan, which has been reluctant to air Westernised product.

Marvel has, however, now struck a deal with Japan's Madhouse Studios (Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter). "Madhouse has said that it is willing to work with us and interpret the characters into animé. We've really let Madhouse run free with it, as long as it respects the integrity of the characters," Rollman said.

Marvel is understood to be talking to Madhouse about a number of properties, which will be released in Japan this year and across the rest of the world in 2011.

Marvel has done the same thing in India with the adaptation of a show called Defenders. "It's going to reach very broadly and tie in with lots of pieces of the culture there," said Rollman.

Marvel has some 7,000 characters in its library and now that it has a studio parent, in the shape of Disney, it is expected to roll out new versions of The Hulk, Iron Man and Spider-Man, as well as lesser-known characters such as Black Panther, Nighthawk and Tigra.

At present, Marvel is on air with Superhero Squad in several territories. Rollman said the show is Marvel's first attempt at comedy and the first time it has taken all the universes of Marvel and put them in one programme.

While the show is aimed at kids, Rollman said that some characters are included "as a nod to the fanboys."

"We like to write a show on multiple levels, so it's accessible to new fans, but also to let the fanboys know we are writing for them as well," he said.

Marvel Entertainment is ramping up its animation slate after joining the Disney fold. The company's president of animation, Eric Rollman, tells C21 Kids what's next.

Marvel Entertainment has a business spanning comic books, films, television, toys, theme parks and video games, and since officially joining the Disney family at the turn of the year is planning to expand its animated interests considerably.

The US$4.24bn acquisition by Disney instantly added an enormous trove of valuable comic book properties to the Mouse House, with applicability to nearly every entertainment medium. Additionally, relatively few Marvel characters have been exploited as either film or TV franchises.

It's great news for Eric Rollman, a former Fox Kids and Saban executive who has helmed Marvel Animation for six years as president.

While Marvel is building up what it does on the live-action film side - in the shape of Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers - it is also growing its TV toon development.

"Marvel is very bullish on animation and has fully funded its third 52-episode series," Rollman says. "In the past, we never did that and the great thing about being part of the Disney family is that the company is made up of animators. They respect it and understand that it's animation that drives consumer products, and so our strategic business is the same."

Marvel has some 7,000 characters in its library and now it is expected to roll out new adaptations of The Hulk, Iron Man and Spider-Man, as well as lesser-known characters such as Black Panther, Nighthawk and Tigra.

"We're a 360-degree entertainment company and we're concentrating on what Marvel does best, which is managing our brands. We understand our characters and have several thousand in the universe that in some way interconnect. So to build these integrated universes but at the time keep them separate is something of an art form," explains Rollman.

In TV, Marvel is on air in several territories with Superhero Squad. Rollman said the show is Marvel's first attempt at comedy and the first time it has taken all the universes of Marvel and put them in one programme. So as well as targeting teens and adults of all ages, for the first time it has attempted to make an entry-level show for kids.

While the show is aimed at youngsters, Rollman says that some characters are included "as a nod to the fanboys," such as Screaming Mimi. "We like to write a show on multiple levels, so it's accessible to new fans, but also to let the fanboys know we are writing for them as well," he says.

Marvel has also just announced an animated take on Ultimate Spider-Man for Disney XD, beginning in 2011.

While a high proportion of Marvel programming will now automatically go to the Disney XD boys' channel, Rollman says that some will not because it is not necessarily the right content for kids. "We have a primetime series called Marvel Knights, which deals with more adult themes. The tagline reads, 'Move over kids, daddy's watching Marvel,'" he explains.

"In terms of distribution, Marvel has in the past worked with different sales teams around the world and we had little control over what was going on air or when. We would have liked to see our properties on certain channels that were aligned with the brand, but our distribution partners may have been looking at where was going to make us the most money.

"Of course, it would be ideal to have both, but it's great that we're now working with the best. For me, it's such a welcome to have that kind of expertise, manpower and enthusiasm since the deal started," he says, referring to Disney's distribution muscle. "The product keeps growing exponentially and we can feed the pipelines."

Hulk Smashing Back to TV

Eric Bana, Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo, move over. It looks like we might be getting the fourth actor to play Bruce Banner within a decade, as Marvel is developing a new live-action Incredible Hulk TV series.

Hollywood Reporter revealed the news that Marvel and ABC were working together on a potential new Hulk show, naming it as a priority at the recently launched Marvel Television. The other project of note in the TV realm for Marvel is Cloak and Dagger, which could headed to ABC Family.

When Disney bought Marvel last year, it seemed a no-brainer that a lot more TV series would be developed based on Marvel characters, with Disney owned channels like ABC, ABC Family and Disney XD all likely homes for such series. The selection of the Hulk as the first big project is a bit of a surprise though, given that he'd been used in films in the past decade (and will be again in Avengers of course), but in some respects makes sense, given the Hulk's history. The 1978 Bill Bixby/Lou Ferigno Incredible Hulk series was a big hit – easily the most notable live-action Marvel project until the past decade, when Blade, X-Men and Spider-Man began breaking through in theaters. However, the two Hulk films both failed to make much of an impact at the box office – despite the better-received reboot film in 2008.
We have fond memories of the old Incredible Hulk show, but we're guessing they won't just paint a dude green in the new one.
The Reporter says that Marvel presented ABC with a list of potential series back in May that included Hulk along with Heroes for Hire (Luke Cage is mentioned specifically, but Iron Fist is not), The Eternals, Moon Knight, The Hood, Ka-Zar, Daughters of the Dragon (Misty Knight and Colleen Wing), and The Punisher. The Reporter also lists Agents of Atlas, Alter Ego as a title, describing it as "private investigator Jessica Jones takes on cases involving superhumans." This is a bit odd, in that the Agents of Atlas comic book had nothing to do with Jessica Jones, but there is also the fact that the Jessica Jones comic book was called Alias and would likely require a new title as to not confuse it with the former ABC (and Disney-owned) TV series, Alias.

[Update: "TitanMatrix2000" suggested in the comments that the Reporter might have accidentally combined two different titles - Agents of Atlas and Alter Ego, with the latter being the Jessica Jones concept. That sounds very likely. They also listed Moon Knight, The Red Hood as a title, which I'm sure is meant to be two projects: Moon Knight and The Hood - without the "Red" which would be a completely different DC character.]

According to The Reporter, while Hulk and Cloak and Dagger (the latter not part of that original pitch meeting) are the priorities now, The Punisher is also being viewed as a potential cable series down the line.

Unclear right now is if Marvel is going to work to interlink their TV series like they are their films, or even go further and make connections between the TV series and the films.

The Reporter describes The Incredible Hulk as being in a "showrunner wanted" position – the insinuation being that it is almost a sure thing to make it to series. Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb meanwhile is meeting with writers about Cloak and Dagger.

Last year, after the Marvel/Disney deal occurred, we gave our own list of the Top 10 Marvel Comics We'd Like to See on TV. I'm happy to see at least a couple of our suggestions were on Marvel's suggestions as well, including a Jessica Jones-led series.

TV unit adds execs for animation side


As Marvel Television looks to expand its animation division, the company has hired two new execs and promoted a third.

Producer Eric Radomski ("Spawn") has joined the company as senior VP of production and animation creative director, while Disney Channels Worldwide exec Tracy McAndrew has joined Marvel as VP of programming and distribution strategy.

Marvel TV also just upped Cort Lane to VP of development and production of animation.

Moves were orchestrated by Marvel TV topper Jeph Loeb, who's looking to increase output of Marvel properties in the animation space, with much of it being produced inhouse for the first time.

"We want to take a page from publishing and take a page from the studio and find the best way to capture Marvel DNA -- and animate it," he said. "There's something very unique about Marvel comics ... it's a different way of storytelling, and that's part of the reason these characters have withstood the test of time."

Marvel's animation division, just 2 years old, is already behind Cartoon Network's "Super Hero Squad," which Loeb calls a "entry-level series" for fans.

Marvel just debuted "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" for boy-centric cabler Disney XD, which is also where Marvel's next big project, "Ultimate Spider-Man," will land. Disney Channel execs recently said they hope to create a Marvel-branded programming block on Disney XD by 2012.

"Ultimate Spider-Man" reps the first time Marvel will produce an animated Spider-Man series itself. Lane, Radomski and McAndrew will play a "pivotal role" in launching the new franchise, Loeb said.

All three execs report to Loeb. Radomski will oversee all aspects of animation production, while McAndrew will handle global distribution strategies and Lane will oversee development on all animated projects.

Radomski most recently sold a preschool series through his own shingle to the BBC; McAndrew was director of acquisitions and co-productions at Disney Channels Worldwide; and Lane was director of development at Marvel, which he joined in 2008 from Mattel.

Marvel Television Staffs Up Animation Team

NEW YORK: In an expansion of its animation division, Marvel Television has added Tracy McAndrew, formerly of Disney Channels Worldwide, and Eric Radomski to its team, while also promoting Cort Lane.

Radomski has been named senior VP of production and creative director for animation. He will oversee all aspects of Marvel's animation. Radomski has worked on the comic-based titles Batman the Animated Series and Spawn. He is a three-time Emmy Award winner.

As VP of programming and distribution strategy, McAndrew will be responsible for developing and executive global distribution objectives and strategies for Marvel's animated content. McAndrew will oversee marketing, program planning and will also manage Marvel's relationships with broadcasters, distribution partners and key licensees. McAndrew recently served as director of acquisitions and co-productions in the worldwide programming strategy group at Disney Channels Worldwide.

Lane has been promoted to VP of development and production at Marvel Animation. In this new role, Lane will oversee the development on all animated series and direct-to-video movies. He was most recently the director of development for Marvel, where he worked on co-productions of Iron Man: Armored Adventures, Black Panther and Marvel Anime, as well as supervising The Super Hero Squad Show.

Each will report to Jeph Loeb, the executive VP and head of Marvel Television.

Loeb said: “Marvel characters have worldwide recognition and animation is a key way in which we remain dedicated to bring these beloved characters to everyone in bold, exciting adventures for all ages. Marvel’s commitment to animation is an increasingly important priority and Cort, Eric and Tracy bring years of experience that will enhance our ability to create and produce innovative stories.”

Guillermo del Toro popped onto his official fan site and left a message about the Hulk TV show. And Marvel will be updating the status of their live-action shows at New York Comic Con.

We've been coming up with an angle that is really strong. I am a fan of Peter David, Pak and Loeb but I like very much what individual writers and artists have done through the decades. I only gravitate to "monster" superheroes- (Blade, Hellboy, Deadman, Hulk-) because I have no interest on the straight ones -even when I've been offered the keys to the kingdom. - Guillermo del Toro

Always nice a big time director like Gullermo reaching out to the fans. Hopefully in the future he'll drop in again and deliver some more information on the show.

I'm looking forward to how they'll handle the Hulk. Will he be a large actor? Would they use camera tricks like Lord of the Rings to make one actor appear much large than another. Or will they go pure CG? Or will they go with a blend of CG and animatronics?

What is your name?

What are some of your favorite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?
“I have been lucky to be part of many great projects. Some of them never got past a pilot, but the experience of breaking new ground was worth it as experiences go. The pilot projects include: The Cartoon Network Pilot, “”Swaroop”" is certainly top of my list, where I met my long time friend and collaborator, Mike Milo. “”Roy Rogers: Rodeoheads”" was a hilarious pilot in which we worked with great voice actors (including Mark Hamil) and the director, Guy Vasilovich. “”The Maharaja Cowboy”" which was done partly in Austin Texas and in Trivandrum India. Recently I wrote a pilot for MARVEL called “”The Defenders”" which may be one of the best TV scripts I’ve ever written.

How did you become interested in animation?
Always loved it. Started making my own stop motion films on Super 8 in the sixth grade. I was obsessed with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Droopy and a bunch of others all through University while I studied psychology. To me animation is the true frontier of human imagination, humor and art.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
Born in Detroit, raised in Canada, moved to L.A., then lived in India, now in Toronto. A lot of that resettling was related to animation.

What’s a typical day like for you with regards to your job?
Wake up turn on the computer. Eat lunch. Sit at the computer. Talk on the phone. Eat dinner. Hang out with the family. Sit in front of the computer and then sleep.

What part of your job do you like best? Why?
the coolest thing is when the cartoon comes to life. Nothing beats that. Other things I love… networking with other animation professionals, writing, directing voice, performing voice.

What part of your job do you like least? Why?
Don’t like it when my back and neck hurts from sitting in one place too much. Also not happy when I’m underpaid or broke.

What is the most difficult part for you about being in the business?
Politics of all kinds. Life could be so perfect without the distrust.

What kind of technology do you work with on a daily basis?
Computer, microphone, fancy software, telephone, car

In your travels, have you had any brushes with animation greatness?
Yes!!! Met Bill Hanna – collaborated with Jimmy Murukami – Met Chuck Jones, Ralph Bakshi. Talked with Matt Groening several times. Partied with David X. Cohen. Talked with Nick Parks… It goes on and on and on. I’ve been luck to have met so many great artists. Animation is loaded with geniuses, and only enthusiasts can truly appreciate it.

Is there any advice you can give for an aspiring animation student or artist trying to break into the business?
Keep learning. Be persistent. Re-invent yourself regularly.

Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb Talks Ultimate Spider-Man Animated - And More! - NYCC Interview

Want to find out everything that's going on with Marvel TV, from the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, to the NEW Incredible Hulk TV Show? Then New York Comic-Con is the place to be, as Jeph Loeb, the guy in charge, chats with fans, and shows off a few exclusive clips. Before the Con gets rolling, though, we chatted about all of this - and suggested our pick for the new voice of the animated Blade:

MTV Geek: One of the first places Marvel TV has dipped their toes in the water is the Anime shows, which are currently running on G4… What’s the general update on the shows, and why was that an important first push?

JL: Well, I don’t know if it was the first push for Marvel TV, it was kind of the thing that came out in front. When I took over Marvel Television about a year and a half ago, it was a project that had been started by Simon Phillips at Marvel. It was a partnership that had been made between us and Sony and MadHouse Animation. If you know anything about Anime, it’s odd to say this, but MadHouse invented Anime; it’s sort of like saying someone invented rock and roll, as far as I’m concerned. [Laughs] But they really are the preeminent house.

Using stories that are created by acclaimed author Warren Ellis, there were four, twelve part stories. The first was Iron Man, the second Wolverine, the third is X-Men, and the fourth is the one that we get the biggest reaction from when we go to any Con, and that’s Blade. These are all incredibly high quality Anime that were done originally for Japan. They are stories that take place in the Pacific Rim. They are the true Marvel characters – Tony Stark is Iron Man, Logan is Wolverine, etc. – but the adventures take place over there, and have large Asian casts… Which I think really helps sell the idea that they’re in that Anime world.

Once they were completed, a deal was struck with G4, which has been an incredible partner on this, and the show has just been blowing up for them. Both Iron Man and Wolverine have just completed their runs on G4, and then starting very shortly will be the X-Men, and then one of the announcements we’ll be making in January will be Blade. What we did was, we reached out into the television community, because we really wanted some terrific English speaking actors to voice the lead roles.

I didn’t have to look very far, from some of the experiences I’ve been lucky enough to have… I reached out to Adrian Pasdar, who has played Tony Stark, and Iron Man. Milo Ventimiglia who has been playing Logan and Wolverine. I think folks now know that Scott Porter, from Friday Night Lights, and is on Hart of Dixie, had a great turn last season on The Good Wife, is playing Cyclops – he’s a tremendous X-Men fan. We have a bit of a surprise coming up in terms of who’s playing Blade, and we’ll be announcing that on Friday afternoon at New York Comic-Con.

Geek: Given what you just said, I’m going to go ahead and say Blade will be voiced by Hayden Panettiere, right?

JL: Well… No. Blade would be a male, African-American vampire slayer, so as much as I would like to do something with Hayden, and we will because she’s fantastic – no, you’re in the wrong box.


Geek: I guess we can scratch Kristen Bell from my list then, too. It’s interesting that you said Blade gets such a big reaction at Cons… Beyond the popularity of the movies, of course, why do you think the character resonates so well with fans?

JL: As it is with any of Marvel’s characters, there’s always going to be a fanbase; and sometimes, that fanbase, because its smaller than some of the better known characters like Iron Man, or Wolverine, that fanbase gets very vocal – because they want people to know that they’re out there. That’s definitely part of it.

The big plus with Blade is that he’s so frickin’ cool. The idea of a daywalker, a vampire who can be out in the light, who also hunts vampires and is a strong African-American Marvel superhero… That’s got a big crossover potential. You get the horror folks, you get the people who are looking for a strong African-American figure, looking for a guy who is cool… And I don’t discount the Wesley Snipes factor. I do believe those movies do still have a very strong following. You put all that together, and when you tell people that a character they haven’t been able to get much new stories from, are gonna get new stories – and cool stories – I think you get a really big reaction.

Geek: Let’s move on to talk about Ultimate Spider-Man. Obviously there’s been a lot of anticipation around this, and you’ll be showing off some of the first clips at NYCC. Any sort of tease about what we’ll be seeing?

JL: What folks are going to get a chance to see at New York for the first time are, we have some very early – but finished – animation for Ultimate Spider-Man. We have this terrific cast led by Drake Bell who plays Peter and Spider-Man. Most folks know him from the Nickelodeon show Drake & Josh, but he really does embody the best parts of Peter – and Spidey. He gets the humor down, the troubled teenager down… It really is an awful lot of fun.

In addition to that, though, the adult cast is pretty much a wish come true. Chi McBride, who you know from Pushing Daisies plays Nick Fury. J.K. Simmons, of course – I don’t think we could have done justice to J. Jonah Jameson without him, with him being in all the first three Spider-Man movies. We also got lucky and have Steven Weber playing Norman Osborn with such tremendous power and glee. And an extra special bonus that we got, that makes me very, very happy is that Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Phil Coulson in the movies, plays Agent Phil Coulson on the show, in a very unusual dual role. He is both the very capable – but sometimes annoying – S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent, a second to our Nick Fury. But he is also the very capable, but sometimes annoying Principal at Peter’s school, Midtown High, because S.H.I.E.L.D. wants to keep an eye on what Spider-Man is up to. We have a much larger cast -- some very big name superhero guest stars and some surprises that we hope folks will really dig -- and we'll be announcing those soon.

So that’s the beginning of what we’ll be talking about. It is unlike any Spider-Man series that’s been done so far. Most importantly, it is the first show that’s been produced entirely by Marvel. We have a superb writing staff. Our pilot, and creative consultant, is two-time Emmy winner Paul Dini, who credits are longer than animation itself – and has two shows under his belt that set the standard for action adventure shows: Batman The Animated Series, and Batman Beyond. Together with Man of Action, who are guys that, if you’re comic book fans, you know them as Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Steve Seagle, and Duncan Roleau. If you know them from animation, you know them from the creation of Ben 10 and Generator Rex. It really is a murderer’s row of writers and producers. And we didn’t even stop there. On top of that, working with us on every episode is the guy who’s written every single issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, Brian Michael Bendis. There’s also been fantastic input from both Joe Quesada, and Amazing Spider-Man Editor Steve Wacker every step of the way. It really is, as we like to say, a family operation.

It’s got great action, it’s got great villains, it’s got a look that will really catch people by surprise. Eric Radomski, who very much had to do with the look, and the production on Batman Animated, and also on Spawn – the HBO animated series – is now our head of production at Marvel TV, for animation. He’s just pulling out all the stops.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and I think that once people get to see some of the animation that’s coming out, and what we’re doing, we hope they’ll be very pleased, and hopefully extremely excited about the show.

Geek: Well, I’m looking forward to it… General question, though, and I’m guessing it may have something to do with the production timelines not syncing up, but: why Peter Parker, instead of Miles Morales?

JL: Please keep in mind that animation is something that takes two years from when you start, to when you start to get your final animation. It’s a long, carefully put together process. So the short answer is that when we started Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales was not a glint in Brian Michael Bendis’ eye. That doesn’t mean that, at some point, we might visit with Miles. He’s certainly a character that caught fire, and as it is with anyone in the Marvel Universe, Spidey will be interacting with some pretty interesting heroes – and villains.

Geek: I’m curious, given that you have Paul Dini on board… Not to talk about the other guys, but there was always a light continuity with the Batman Animated shows, and Justice League Unlimited. It wasn’t overt, but it did feel like it was in the same universe. Is that something you’re going to be setting up with Ultimate Spidey?

JL: What we’re doing – and I do get asked this question a lot – is that there will be a continuity that refer to as: The Marvel Universe. So we will try to tell stories that don’t necessarily with conflict with anything that’s happening in the Marvel Universe. You’ll see some of the elements from the movies, you’ll see some of the elements from the television group, and you’ll see a lot of elements from the publishing group. The bottom line out of all of this is that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, and we are very true to his life, and his character as a high school student at Midtown High.

Geek: I know this is still a while out, but Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.… Anything you can tell us about that series?

JL: Just that it’s in development, it’s the next show up in the chute. We were lucky, because we were able to convince Paul Dini that he was having so much working on Ultimate Spider-Man, so we said, is there a character that really gets you jazzed? And he said, I just love the Hulk, and I would love to find a way to tell a story that had big giant adventure, and was different than Spidey… Where you could really get into some of the bombastic elements of the Marvel Universe.

It’s incredibly huge, and has a cast that’s obviously near and dear to my heart. It has Hulk, and Red Hulk, Skaar, She-Hulk, and the brand new A-Bomb – who is Rick Jones, who has been transformed into the newest, bluest hero of the group.

Geek: Moving on to the live action side of things, the last time I chatted with you about this was right before No Ordinary Family, and The Cape, and even the development of the Wonder Woman pilot… And all of those pretty much tanked. Are you at all concerned, given the television atmosphere, to bring live action superheroes to TV? Or does it come down to, “Dude, we’re Marvel TV, and we’ll do it RIGHT”?

JL: I'll give you "Dude, we're Marvel TV and we're going to at least have fun doing the best we can!" [Laughs] Putting any show on television is a challenge. I’ve been very lucky to work with incredible showrunners on Smallville, and LOST, and Heroes, I hope to bring a lot of those lessons to Marvel live television. The thing that I do believe makes a difference – and believe me, this is not a commentary on any of the shows that failed – the right showrunner, with the right vision can make the difference.

The two examples that immediately come to mind are Joss Whedon on Buffy, and Damon Lindelof on LOST. You really do need to have somebody who’s at the helm, who understands not only what the show is, but where it’s going. And where it’s going in five years! Who those characters are, and how they sound.

It’s such an enormously challenging process to make any kind of television. It’s stressful, and works towards getting the best out of creative people. I hear all the time that people wonder, why is there so much bad television on? And speaking as someone who’s worked in that vineyard for the last ten years of my life: when you’re on the inside, and you see how many people are involved in the creation of a show, and the enormous amount of time and money that goes into it… You’d be amazed there’s any GOOD television at all. The fact that there is as much good television on is a testament to the extraordinarily gifted folks that are out there writing and creating TV.

It is a writer’s medium, and particularly genre television is one that’s best remembered as a writer’s medium. Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, you can just go through the list of the shows that have stuck around past the first season, and you really can point to: oh, those shows have THAT person who was embracing it, and made sure that it stayed on course. That has been not only the best part of working in live television at Marvel, but also part of the reason we are taking things so slowly. We need to find the right people. People who understand these characters, and who will bring them to life in a way that works.

There is other big differences between Marvel and all the other guys. From the projects that we’ve already announced, and let’s talk specifically about AKA Jessica Jones, which is based on Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos’ graphic series Alias – and pretty obvious reasons why we can’t call the show "Alias" – and The Hulk… These are shows that, at the end of the day really exist in the real world. It is one of the things that makes Marvel different from our Distinguished Competitors.

Marvel stories tend to take place in New York City. They DON’T take place in Metropolis, or Gotham City. People certainly know I’ve written my fair share of these comics, and I have great respect for what they do over there. But it is a world that one step away from our world. Marvel is really about the stories of Peter Parker, and Bruce Banner, or Jessica Jones. These are – I’m hesitant to say the word, but – real people, with real problems whose power comes, to use the great expression, with great responsibility.

They’re not stories of the superhero, with the cape, who then has a secret identity in order to cover up what it is that they’re doing. It’s the other way around. It will ALWAYS be Peter’s story. The thing that makes us root for Spider-Man, as he swings across the city, is that he’s either having the time of his life, or worrying about whether he’ll be able to get a good grade on that English paper, or whether or not he’s going to make it home in time for Aunt May to make his dinner.

Those are the real world problems that Peter brings to that person with the mask on, to Spider-Man. That's why we are invested in him or Bruce Banner or Jessica Jones... And in Television it's all about investing in the characters who you've invited in your home. It's a very intimate experience and we want to share the Marvel Universe with as wide an audience as possible.

At least that's our hope.

Clark Gregg shows up at the Marvel TV panel to talk the new Spider-Man animated series.

Head of Marvel TV Jeph Loeb headed up the -- what else? -- Marvel TV panel at New York Comic-Con today, where the company's array of animated and live-action projects that are in development were discussed. Plus, Agent Coulson showed up!

Loeb started the panel by noting that the reason they're taking their time with their TV projects is that they took their cue from Marvel's film division. Marvel didn't used to make their own movies, but now we're getting The Avengers. (Even the Marvel guys can't quite believe that one's actually happening.) They want the TV projects to follow that same mold.

Not much news broke at this panel, which served more as a refresher course on the state of Marvel TV at the moment. Here's what's up on the animated front.

The much anticipated Ultimate Spider-Man series is coming in early 2012. Security was very tough at this panel for some reason, and big guys in dark suits (S.H.I.E.L.D. agents?) kept making me turn my laptop off. But luckily, the footage screened today was pretty much the same as what was shown at San Diego this past summer, so let's just refer back to that:

Loeb then ran a sizzle reel, including what looked to be fully rendered footage, shots from the Ultimate comics and behind-the-scenes interviews with the talent charged with creating the show (including Stan Lee). This is a very playful, funny Spidey, one who fights Doctor Doom while talking to MJ on the phone (in a split screen shot, we see her cutting vegetables in the kitchen and him dodging Doom's attacks while he's trying to get off the phone). As he swings through Times Square, with a villain in hot pursuit, Spidey momentarily turns into a spider-toaster after the baddie says, "You're toast!"

Stylistic flourishes like that will separate the show from past Spider-Man cartoons. Expect the character to break the fourth wall at times, as when he says to a bad guy "Costumes don't sew themselves" and we quickly cut to Peter at home, sewing his costume. He turns and looks at the camera and says, "What?"

Other glimpses included Spidey riding a motorcycle in a subway tunnel while a tentacled robot chases him, a battle with Venom, Spidey reflecting on Uncle Ben's birthday, Steven Weber voicing Norman Osborn, J.K. Simmons voicing J. Jonah Jameson, and more.

In the reel, Loeb said that this is actually the first time that Marvel is making its own Spider-Man cartoon. We can expect a lot of forced perspective, suggesting the character is thrusting at you, and a prime example is the classic web-shooting "thwip" which was right in our faces at one point in the clip. The backgrounds will change in mid-shot and look highly stylized at times, and Spidey also appears to exhibit more facial expressions through his mask here (such as "closing his" eyes). The show will have lots of guest stars too -- Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Nick Fury (who is mentoring this young Spidey to become the "ultimate Spider-Man," and is voiced by Chi McBride) and, of course, Stan Lee. He'll have a recurring role as "Stan the janitor" at Peter's school.

As for Agent Coulson, Clark Gregg is returning as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s second most famous agent to do double duty as the high school principal in Ultimate. When Gregg made his surprise appearance at this panel, he received a very warm welcome of course -- though his presence was truly appreciated after continuous tech problems on the video side led to something of a one-man Clark Gregg show as he fielded questions from the audience instead. (By the way, he says he just wrapped The Avengers and we will not be disappointed by it.) And when he finished out his little visit, Gregg said he just wanted to plug a little indie film that he did that he's trying to get into Sundance. It's called… The Avengers.

Some other bits and pieces on the animated front: The previously announced Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. is coming in early 2013. It'll feature Hulk, Red Hulk, She-Hulk, Skaar and Rick Jones' A-Bomb. (She-Hulk has some of the best lines, says Loeb.) The group will be taking on some of the biggest problems in the Marvel Universe, though ultimately the show is about the heart of the characters. Of course it is!

Also, there may be a special announcement coming regarding The Super Hero Squad in the not-too-distant future.

And finally, The Avengers Season 2 will be coming in early 2012 (to coincide with Ultimate Spider-Man). But the first episode of the season was screened at today's panel. Again, we also saw this at San Diego in July, so here's our recap from there. Watch out for spoilers!

And then it was on to Avengers. The Season 2 premiere was shown in full for the crowd, and it was pretty fun. Here's a quick rundown of it, but watch out for spoilers.

Things begin with a robotic voice reading through the roster of Avengers as holographic displays of each member appear. The threat level and abilities of each Avenger is mentioned, and then the camera reveals that it's Doctor Doom and his fembot servant who are studying the team. Cut to the main titles.

At Avengers Mansion, Hawkeye answers the door -- it's the Human Torch and the Thing, there to play cards. But as the Hulk enters the room, he immediately runs and attacks the Thing. Because that's what they do, right? It's a funny motif that continues throughout the episode.

Meanwhile, Iron Man and Wasp arrive at the Baxter Building, where they're updating Reed Richards and Sue Storm on the Asgard situation from last season. (Wasp: "We basically saved the universe.") Back at the mansion, the card game is in full swing and Cap and Black Panther have joined in. The two teams are arguing about who saves the world better, and Cap doesn't know who the Human Torch is. "How can you not know that?" screams Johnny Storm. Hawkeye nonchalantly says, "Give him a break, Torch. He's like a hundred years old." Then the Thing wins the hand and the Hulk attacks him. Again.

Soon the action kicks in as Doom's robots attack the Baxter Building and the mansion simultaneously. Lots of cool action beats here, with a Doombot's hand launching from its body and grabbing hold of Wasp, Reed deactivating a robot by wrapping his arms around its body and then accessing its control panel in its head, and the Thing trying to get the Hulk angry, resulting in the Hulk using the Thing's body to smash robots. The scene culminates with the realization that the Doombots were a distraction while Doom's crony made off with Wasp and Sue.

At Doom's castle, the girls are trapped in force fields. The Wasp is berating Doom: "Putting on a skirt over your second-rate Iron Man armor? Not helping." Soon, the FF and Avengers stage a two-pronged attack on Doom's castle, which results in some more nice action moments (the Black Panther takes out Doom's fembot with a claw through the gut, Doom's hit so hard at one point by the Hulk that his hood momentarily drops to reveal his full metallic helmet). Eventually, Doom simply allows everyone to leave. "Why, Victor?" says Reed. "This isn't over," says Iron Man. Doom does not respond, as we close-in on his face and the scarred flesh behind his mask.

The episode ends with the heroes back in New York, pondering why Doom did what he did. And then we cut back to Doom's castle, where we see the results of scans he had performed on Wasp and Sue…

Confirming that the Hulk of The Avengers will indeed be the same one as the one in the planned TV show, it sounds as if the Green Goliath will definitely be all CGI on the small screen while Kevin Feige also hints at a shared universe...

IGN Movies have compiled some details from New York Comic Con which shed some new light on Marvel's plans for how their live action TV shows will link up with the movies as well as comments from Jeph Loeb and Kevin Feige on all that and more. Below are a few excerpts from their report, but be sure to click on the link below to read it in full.

-Loeb stated that the recent trailer for The Avengers was basically our first glimpse of the TV Hulk.

-Loeb says that Marvel will be pushing the technology to its limit. That apparently means that all the intensive CGI modeling and design work that is being done for the movie Hulk will be recycled for the TV version.

-Loeb says the series is a different take on the Hulk, one that will focus more on the relationship between Betty Ross and Bruce at the very beginning of the Hulk's existence (when Hulk is still unknown to the world at large).

-Now, this shared TV/movie universe idea seems to go against previous statements made by the Marvel brass. So we asked Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige about the matter last night. And he, essentially, said it could happen.

Pretty interesting, eh? The small screen adventures of these heroes will serve as a great way of introducing them to audiences and this could ultimately result in the likes of Carol Danvers (who is confirmed to play a role in A.K.A. Jessica Jones) making their way to the big screen! Mockingbird is also thought to have links to the movies in the form of S.H.I.E.L.D! Fox Developing Marvel's 'Frank Castle' The Punisher Television Series!

Recent reports suggest that Fox has bought a television series for MarvelComics character Frank Castle, better known as 'The Punisher.' For more details, make the jump!

The trades of Variety, among other media outlets, are suggesting that Disney's ABC channel has sold a television series based on famous Marvel comics character Frank Castle, better known as 'The Punisher,' to FOX. Learning only last year that Marvel Studios retained the rights to the character, find out below vaguely what they have planned for the vigilante.

The Punisher is described as an hour-long procedural with a Marvel signature and a new take on one of comic book giant’s iconic characters, Frank Castle, a rising star detective with the NYC Police Department who moonlights as the vigilante Punisher seeking justice for those the system has failed. Bernero will executive produce along with Marvel. This marks the first sale this season and the first one ever outside of ABC for Disney-owned Marvel, which is developing TV series based on its properties through ABC Studios.

With ABC series adaptations of The Incredible Hulk and Jessica Jones under development, it seems Marvel-Disney are making use of owning their characters, going beyond the bigscreen; as well they should. Anyhow, while there's three feature films based on The Punisher, the last of which in 2008, do you think a television series does 'Frank Castle' justice?

Jeph Loeb On Marvel TV: Goes In Depth On Hulk, Possibility Of S.H.I.E.L.D/Coulson Show

Loeb discuses plans for some upcoming shows with CBR. He reiterates the possibility of a S.H.I.E.L.D series post Avengers, talks about the Ultimate Spider-Man animated show, and compares the live action Hulk series to the classic Bill Bixby show..

Marvel's Head Of Television Jeph Loeb goes fairly in depth on the plans for the Hulk tv series here. He says that the most popular incarnation of Bruce Banner has always been Billy Bixby and explains how we never got to sympathize with his plight in the two Hulk movies the same as we did in the classic show. He says Mark Ruffalo's version of the character in The Avengers will change all that. He says Betty Ross is as big a part of the show as Banner and it's very much a love story between them. He also hints that even though the show will air after The Avengers movie, it will be set a long time before it. He also talks about the special effects that will be used to bring The Hulk to life, hinting that Guillermo Del Toro will use a similar approach to Hellboy. There is MUCH more on Hulk and various other Marvel projects too so be sure to watch but the TV stuff comes in around the 13 minute mark.

The folks from I Am Rogue recently caught up with Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who Marvel-Disney tapped to pen the story for a television series based on the titular character of Brian Bendis' Alias comic; Jessica Jones. Discussing the source material of the ABC series, being titled AKA Jessica Jones, and the inclusion of 'Luke Cage,' read what she says below.
On the Brian Michael Bendis-written Alias source material:

“Brian Michael Bendis is such an amazing storyteller. I read that comic book & I completely saw it on screen. There're things I took directly from the comic book & just put in the script. That was so much fun to do.”

On the current status on the Television series:

“It’s still sitting at ABC and we’re hoping to get on the schedule for next fall,” she said. “I love this character. That is an incredibly damaged, dark, complex female character that kicks ass. That’s my favorite thing about it.”

On whether Jones will still be a former hero turned private detective:

“Yeah absolutely, but Jessica Jones is actually a former superhero with PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,” she explained. “My psychologist father-in-law said, ‘I don’t know why all superheroes aren’t PTSD.’ It’s a trip. So she is wrestling with having this damaged past and still trying to contribute something to the world.”

On Luke Cage and the possible inclusion of his and Jones' daughter from the comics:

“Luke Cage is in there. Absolutely, I love that character,” she confirmed. “[Jones and Cage’s child, Danielle] would be way down the road,” she answered. “When you give your superheroes babies it gets very complicated. I went through that on Dexter, although it gives you some new interesting storytelling.”

On whether she's a fan of comic books in general:

“I don’t read a lot of them (comic books). ABC gave that one to me and I had never heard of it or Brian Michael Bendis. But now I’m a fan, he is really so great. But I was new to it for sure.”

With Marvel also developing The Incredible Hulk TV series with Guillermo del Toro, and the recently-revealed small-screen return of The Punisher, Disney and ABC are hoping to have the AKA Jessia Jones pilot ready for next pilot season. What do you think?

AKA Jessica Jones Television Show Can Reference The Avengers

Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg reveals that ABC's "AKA Jessica Jones, will use lesser known Marvel characters, and might have to rename others.

"I wrote it kind of off season so it fell in between seasons," Rosenberg says. "So, we are waiting to see what happens for the upcoming season now and our hope is that it will come to life at that time. It fell between the cracks of the seasons and, hopefully, this will be the one."

Rosenberg confirmed the show would also have principal parts for Luke Cage (also known as Power Man and her eventual husband in the comics) as well as Carol Danvers (better known as Ms. Marvel).

"I had Jessica Jones and Luke Cage and Carol Danvers [for the pilot script]. Basically, I wanted those three guys -- then I would have a series. Everyone else we can be digging into lesser known characters or taking known characters and renaming them."

As for The Avengers themselves, Rosenberg says she can reference them, but Tony Stark and Stark Industries are in the current pilot script. Rosenberg notes, "As we go along things will alter in terms of what is made available to us, but we're definitely in that universe. We are in no way denying that that universe exists. And as much as I can I'm going to pull everything in from there that I can use."

Marvel-Disney is adapting Brian Bendis' Alias comic; Jessica Jones for ABC. They tapped Melissa Rosenberg who has a Twilight screenwriting background to bring the story to life. The story revolves around a superhero that suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. She quits fighting crime once her disorder interferes with her powers. She decides to help in a different way by opening a private detective agency that caters to other superheroes.

The executive producer of ABC's AKA Jessica Jones also talks about what she learned from the failed WB television series, Birds of Prey.

Marvel Comics hasn't had a successful live-action television show since Bill Bixby's The Incredible Hulk, but that all could change very soon. Marvel comics will be unleashing two live-action television series for ABC. One will be Guillermo del Toro's Hulk and the other will be the lesser known AKA Jessica Jones. Which is a show about a former superhero that opens a detective agency that helps other superheroes.

Disney handed over the reigns to Jessica Jones project to Melissa Rosenberg. She will be writing for the series, and more importantly be the executive producer. She has made a name for herself by writing scripts for the Twilight saga, and for writing and executive producing Showtime's hit cable show, Dexter. But she also isn't new to comic books either, she wrote several episodes for the short-lived series, Birds of Prey.


What hooked you on doing Jessica Jones, especially in the wake of the failed Wonder Woman series?

I think one of the major differences between Wonder Woman and Jessica Jones is that Wonder Woman is iconic and much better known, so you get into a lot of ridiculous expectations, like what’s her costume going to look like? Well, nobody knows who Jessica Jones is, except for fangirls and boys. So we have more freedom to actually bring the character to the screen in a way with a lot fewer expectations. The other side of that is we’ll have to earn fans as opposed to having them already in place.

Wonder Woman is so noble and heroic, and I don’t find that as interesting as one who’s really damaged and flawed and has post-traumatic stress disorder.

But I think there’s also another element of Wonder Woman vs. Jessica Jones; I find Jessica Jones a much more interesting character to write for than Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is so noble and heroic, and I don’t find that as interesting as one who’s really damaged and flawed and has post-traumatic stress disorder. Her superpowers are kind of B-level, they’re not all that great. [Laughs] I just find that much more interesting, you know? It’s like she’s not quite cutting it in the superhero world, she’s a little too weird to be in the human world, so she ends up straddling both.

On a related note, what do you feel went wrong with Birds of Prey and what lessons do you take from that as you create this new superheroine series?

Well, I think one of the problems with Birds of Prey was there were too many cooks in that kitchen. The studio, the producers, the network, all had very different visions of what that should be. They should have just let Laeta Kalogridis control that. Instead they decided to try to get their hands in the mix. I think the best shows have one voice and one vision, or a team, whatever it is, and you have to defer to your talent. Laeta Kalogridis, more than most people, is certainly someone who can deliver when it comes to this genre. She was new to TV at the time… but that was a big mistake to me. Hand Laeta the reins and just let her go!

Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg is certainly talking her new tv show AKA Jessica Jones up a storm. In this latest interview with io9 she reveals much more about what we can expect to see. The show, which is based on the Marvel comic Alias by Brian Michael Bendis, deals with a female super hero who suffers terrible abuse at the hands of a sadistic villain known as The Purple Man. Rosenberg says that this character will be slightly different..in that he won't be purple, and may not even be called Purple Man. She says she is "open to interpretations of him" so it sounds like nothing is set in stone yet. But I guess even if that character goes through a few alterations it won't be such a big deal. But what about some of the more well known and beloved heroes like Luke Cage? Here is an excerpt from the interview..

io9: Are you guys going to break canon with Luke Cage?

MR: Maybe a little bit — you have to stay true. Luke Cage is a Marvel Universe character, you really have to stay true to who he was, but there are some… yeah. There are some things that might surprise you. So the answer to that is, Yes and no. I've learned from Twilight that there's only so much canon-breaking you can do.

io9: I read that this is taking place in the Marvel Universe, but that there are some characters you can work with and others you can't, I know Ant-Man has a lot to do with Jessica Jones, I know there's a big Captain America side story, are we going to see these characters?

MR: I love Ant-Man by the way — what a crazy superpower. Different characters are owned by different studios, The Avengers are owned by one studio, the X-Men are owned by another. There are a lot of toes out there that you have to avoid stepping on. We'll use any character that they'll let us.

io9: You're obviously introducing Jessica and Luke to the Marvel Universe, so would Marvel let you introduce a new Avenger like Ant-Man through the show?

MR: I don't know if Ant-Man is going to be available to us. The trick is if they have their own movie coming out, then probably not. But I don't know that Ant-Man has his own movie, so I'm hoping he's going to be available to us. But there's thousands of characters, there's really no limit to what we can't use in terms of finding someone with similar powers. There's also various different characters that they reinvent every couple of decades.

Even the possibility of an appearance by Ant-Man is a cool prospect, but this also sounds like these shows might not be as tied into the Marvel Movie universe as we had previously thought. The changes to Cage sound minimal enough but how would you Power Man fans feel is they were to alter him too much? From what we have heard so far and being a fan of the Alias comic this show has shot right up to my most anticipated from the Marvel batch which includes Hulk and The Punisher. What do you guys think?

Michael Jai White is no stranger to comic books and comic book movies. He played the title role of Spawn in the forgettable movie version and had a brief cameo as Gambol in The Dark Knight. The actor has also expressed interest in directing and acting in a Black Panther movie for Marvel. But the one character than most fans think White would be perfect for is Power Man himself; Luke Cage. In the following interview with CBR White responds to the question: "Are you aware that you are Luke Cage and Marvel just doesn't know it yet"..

He says he is aware of the fan demand for him to play the role and would be interested as long as it was done right and didn't "suck". He then goes on to discuss Black Dynamite , Spawn and working with Todd McFarlane.

Of course we have all heard of Marvel's plans for a Luke Cage movie but now that we know that character will be appearing in the AKA Jessica Jones Tv series what does that mean for those plans? Guillermo Del Toro Fields Questions About Pacific Rim And The Hulk Television Show

Guillermo del Toro has a number of potatoes in the oven but arguably the biggest potatoes are his ambitious mecha monster rumble flick, Pacific Rim and his involvement with the Hulk's return to TV.

Speaking to io9, Del Toro fielded questions about the current status of Pacific Rim and the Hulk television show.

Following up on discussions about del Toro's novel and graphic novel, The Strain, io9 asks him to elaborate on putting his personal spin on the monster movie genre with Frankenstein and Pacific Rim:

Del Toro: The reality is that it comes not from a goal, but from the fact that I'm fulfilling my bucket list as a kid.

Del Toro goes on to open up more about how Pacific Rim is progressing:

Del Toro: Very good, we're at the end of our second week. We are shooting everything for the main complex in the movie, which is a huge complex in Hong Kong where the robots are maintained. We are doing that, while building downtown Hong Kong streets.

Del Toro then shifted focus onto the upcoming Incredible Hulk TV show for ABC and it's progress:

Del Toro: Very good. We delivered the screenplay to the network. I have a very specific idea of how to do it, and we're waiting for the green light. We know all the iterations of the Hulk pretty good. We've read all the essential stories, and we're then riffing on that. There are so many incarnations and ideas. Jeph Loeb — who did a good run [on Hulk: Grey] — is involved, and I love Peter David's Hulk. But there's really no part in that mythos that we don't know, so we are trying put our own personal spin on it.

The Q&A closed Del Toro discussing what's currently inspiring him:

Del Toro: I really enjoyed Drive and [director Kim Ji-woon's] I Saw The Devil, which is absolutely insane and brutal. I recommend it for the not faint of heart.

Del Toro previously described the monsters in the film, Pacific Rim to be "Huge" and stated that the film involves them traveling through a vortex in the pacific rim where they attack major cities and humans must battle them by using mecha suits called Jaegers. He commented,"This is my most un-modest film, this has everything. The scale is enormous and I'm just a big kid having fun."

Speaking to Popcorn Biz, the accomplished screenwriter rehashed her plans for ABC's foray into Marvel properties and compared the show's subject matter to Captain America: The First Avenger.

“Brian Michael Bendis is an extraordinary writer,” says Rosenberg. “I love that series. I love that character. And we're just hoping ABC has room for it in their fall schedule. Because, you know, it's dark material. It's not 'Captain America.’ I mean, it is some pretty gritty, adult-themed stuff. So we'll have to see how that fits [on network television]. She's a former superhero with post-traumatic stress disorder trying to make it as a detective in New York. But she keeps on getting pulled back in, because she has some minor superpowers. She's got like B-level superpowers – she's so awesome! But she keeps on getting pulled back in, so she's straddling the two worlds.”

“It's very difficult to reference one or the other because, oh, Fox owns that and someone else owns that,” Rosenberg explains. “But we're able to use Luke Cage and some of the lesser-known characters. But Jessica and Luke Cage – as long as I have those two guys, I don't care who else!”

“It’s not my first [foray into the world of superheroes] because I worked on a show called 'Birds of Prey' way back – I mean decades ago!” she laughs. “So I was a little bit experienced, but I've not ever been completely immersed in that world, so this was definitely diving in a significant way. And I got very lucky, you know, in nabbing Brian Michael Bendis. How much better does it get than that? Really?”

Bendis confirmed to me a while back on Twitter that he was a consulting "where needed" on the show so hopefully that means we'll get something similar to the tone and structure of the comic book.

"It's going to be really true [to the comics]," he revealed. "There’s tons of different [versions of Spider-Man]. He’s in high school. He doesn’t have, the webs don’t come out of his arms. He’s a science nerd, so he figured out how to make sticky web substance and they’re called web shooters. So it’s more like the 'Ultimate Spider-Man' comic book than the Tobey Maguire [movie] or the new 'Amazing Spider-Man' or anything like that." Huh, guess no one told him that Andrew Garfield's live action take on the iconic Marvel character WILL include web shooters!

Regardless, Drake then went on say that while he's enjoyed his time voicing the animated version of Spider-Man, his role in comedy Superhero Movie gave him a taste of what it would be like to play a superhero on the big screen in live action. "I love comic books. I love superheroes. I did ‘Superhero Movie’ years ago... it’s fun. I would love to do that again in a serious role that was all slap stick comedy." In an interview, Todd Casey, Supervising Producer on the Astonishing X-Men Dangerous motion comics, revealed a good bit on what's going on with this latest series. Casey works with Atomic Studios & is in charge of the entire production of each episode of the series.

On animating John Cassaday's art:

John is really a born director. His shot selection is impeccable & his characters have such expressive acting, which comes in really handy for what we’re doing. He brings the scenes to life with a cinematic realism that did us a world of good in the translation. The challenge in making his artwork move is that he uses a touch of charcoal around his line work. On the page, it gives it a wonderful texture, but when you blow up a small panel to the size of a TV screen, it can be tricky to preserve the detail in a line like that.

On why the Whedon/Cassaday story is great for animation:

Joss & John are really cinematic storytellers. Joss has well over a dozen seasons of TV under his belt, & he brought everything he learned in that time to his comic work. His scripts are airtight & there’s a liveliness to his style that keeps the pace going even in dialogue-heavy scenes.

2012 Could be Breakthrough Year for Comic Book Television Shows

A staggering number of pilots based on comic books are being prepared for television.

In recent years there have been a few comic books adapted for television. Smallville, Human Target, and of course Walking Dead come to mind. But behind the scenes many other TV shows are being worked on now, with the hope that they will get their own series. More comic book shows than ever are being prepared, so 2012 could end up being the biggest year yet for comic book adaptations on television.

Here is a list of shows now being prepared. We have heard of these shows, but when you see them all listed together, then you see what a breakthrough 2012 could be for comic book adaptations. And this may not even end up being a full list by the time the year is over.

The shows are:

Hulk - Well known film director Guillermo del Toro is behind this television adaptation of Hulk’s story for ABC.

Powers - Powers already has a pilot filmed for FX. The pilot is getting some reshoots, and then a decision will be made on if it goes to series.

Chew - Chew is being worked on by the same production company that makes Walking Dead. It would be a half hour comedy on Showtime. Not to be confused with the cooking show The Chew. Really not to be confused with it…

Deadman - The CW is looking for a super-hero show that can replace Smallville, and Deadman is hoping to be it. Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, who really knows how to make a show in the land of spooky, will be the executive producer.

Punisher - The FOX network are preparing a pilot from Criminal Minds producer Ed Bernero in which Frank Castle is a police detective by day, and Punisher by night. Yes, really.

Spectre - FOX are working on a show based on DC’s Spectre character, which was co-created by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel.

AKA Jessica Jones - This show about Marvel’s retired super-hero and now private eye, Jessica Jones, will be written and produced by Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who is hoping to use in it any character from the Marvel Universe that the shows needs, if the rights are not already in use elsewhere. Expect Luke Cage and Carol Danvers to show up, and maybe even Scott Lang. For ABC.

Cloak & Dagger - The teenaged duo learn about their powers and each other in post-Katrina New Orleans. For ABC Family.

Mockingbird - Bobbie Morse is a Peter Parker like nerd and works as a spy for a secret organization. For ABC Family.

One of the reasons why G.I. Joe: Renegades was such a great show is likely due to the exceptional writing team in charge of the show. Star Wars: The Clone Wars veteran Henry Gilroy was at the top of the writers’ food chain alongside Marty Isenberg, who was one of the brainchildren behind Transformers: Animated.

In a recent episode of Star Wars themed podcast The Forcecast, Henry Gilroy came on to talk a bit about his work on Clone Wars, and also revealed some juice about the potential future of G.I. Joe: Renegades. Hint – there isn’t one.

You can check out the episode right here, and the Renegades talk is very brief (around the 58 minute and 54 second mark). I’ve also transcribed the information below…with a healthy dose of paraphrasing, so definitely listen to the episode for the accurate phrasing.

The Forcecast: Season 2 of Renegades, when are we going to see it?

Henry Gilroy: Actually, you’re probably not going to… if you watch Renegades and saw the new trailer for G.I. Joe 2, it’s basically the same plot. The next incarnation of G.I. Joe animated is probably going to have something to do with the movie.

The Forcecast: I’m really disappointed about G.I. Joe…

Henry Gilroy: There’s been talk of maybe… doing something to tie up the series, which may or may not happen…we can always hold out hope for Renegades.

So, really kind of confirmed what we’d already suspected. G.I. Joe: Renegades isn’t on so much of a “hiatus” as a “retirement” with the next iteration (if there is one) focusing more on the Retaliation universe.

Gilroy also mentions that he is leaving Hasbro to work on another project..a Hulk animated series with Paul Dini. So it sounds like whatever next version of G.I. Joe animation there might be, he won’t be involved, which is a shame.

Announced by Jeph Loeb in the middle of last year, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. is an upcoming cartoon series that will feature the Red Hulk (along with Hulk, Skaar, She-Hulk and A-Bomb) set to air on the Disney XD channel in early 2013. Information has since been limited, but additional information (including an animation test) was presented to the lucky attendance of this year’s WonderCon 2012 : Marvel Television Presents Panel. Newsarama.com was present for this panel and here was their blow by blow:

“Loeb is talking about new animated series in development. “As of January 1, we opened the doors on a brand-new animation studio.”

“In discussing the previously announced “Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.,” Loeb says that you won’t believe how cool the Hulk is in the Avengers live-action movie, and they wanted to “keep that engine going.”

“The first still from the series is on the screen, showing green Hulk, Red Hulk, Skaar, She-Hulk and A-Bomb.

‘Here it comes: An “animation test” from the series.

“It’s a short feature introducing all of the main characters, with each seeming pretty close to the comic book version — Hulk was aggressive but spoke in full sentences and not “Hulk Smash!” and Red Hulk’s military background was emphasized. The voice of A-Bomb sounded like Seth Green, but that wasn’t confirmed.

Marvel And Fox No Longer Moving Ahead With THE PUNISHER TV Series

Following the news that AKA Jessica Jones won't be making her way to ABC (read more details on that HERE) it has now been revealed that The Punisher will NOT be joining The Hulk on the small screen too. Read on for details.

While The Hulk may have been given the, ahem, green light, it has now been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that The Punisher will not be joining him on the small screen. Despite the fact that Fox and ABC Studios were planning on moving ahead with Criminal Minds' Ed Bernero on a pilot, Paul Lee (the president of the latter network) has confirmed that it is not moving ahead. No reason was given, but you can read his comments about working on other Marvel TV shows by clicking HERE. The series was originally described as an hour-long procedural which would have made Frank Castle a rising NYPD detective who moonlights as The Punisher in order to seek justice for those that the system failed. Fans weren't too happy with those changes to continuity and may not be all that broken hearted by the news. Be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

HULK Television Show To Hopefully Hit ABC Airwaves Next Year, Network Passes On AKA JESSICA JONES

Paul Lee, Entertainment President for ABC talks optimistically about the Hulk television show. Work will continue on the Guillermo del Toro project while AKA Jessica Jones comes to a halt.

Lee stated in a conference call this morning that he would "like more Marvel projects to come to ABC".
"Hulk is in development,it wasn't going to be ready this season but we hope it's going to be ready for next season."

Fan favorite Guillermo del Toro (Hell Boy, Pan's Labrynth) is developing the project the television network which also has Disney for a parent company.

"We're immensely proud to be [in] company with The Avengers," he said. "We're going to continue to develop aggressively. We're very happy to make shows not just for our own network but for other networks too. Where the shows are more appropriate to our brand they'll go with us. Where they're more appropriate to brands like Fox [Click here for disappointing news about The Punisher] or NBC, CBS, happy to do that too. We would like to see some Marvel projects move to television."

When pressed for details, Lee remained mum only dangling the interesting reveal that the network has other Marvel properties to develop.

"We've got some in development, but none that I can talk about at this point."

Sadly, one of those shows is not AKA Jessica Jones. Lee confirmed that AKA Jessica Jones, a TV adaptation of the Marvel comic book series Alias, will not be going to series. Reportedly, the show would have featured titular character, Jessica Jones with feature appearances from Luke Cage and Carol Danvers, better known as Ms. Marvel.

Initially, my first thought in response to Lee's comments about more Marvel properties in development lead me to AKA Jessica Jones so I was stunned to learn that ABC declined to move forward. On paper, it had the potential to be a fabulous show. No update on the fate of the "Cloak and Dagger" ABC Family show as of yet but we'll post details if there's any development. With the success of The Avengers, it makes me wonder if Disney is simply rethinking which characters they want to bring to primetime airwaves. Maybe a S.H.I.E.L.D. espionage television show?

Marvel: Cup o' Joe

The highlight of the day for many of the people in the Business Design Centre today, and definitely for me, was the main Marvel event, one of Joe Quesada's now famous 'Cup o' Joe' events, in which he shoots the breeze with the audience and takes questions on anything they want to talk about. Naturally, there was plenty of Avengers talk. I'll try to summarise the key points in what was a fascinating session in the Gallery Hall...

- Joe talked about the future of comics, and digital comics in particular. He spoke about Marvel's 'Infinite Comic' concept - and said that it's the future of telling stories. By allowing the reader to still control the timing of the reading, they've finally found a good way of transferring comics to the digital world, and he's confident and excited about that. He explained that one of the big problems for a lot of people who WOULD be interested in reading comics ("our culture is ravenous for the material") is that they live nowhere near a comic store - which of course isn't a problem with digital comics. He also says that the concept of everyone showing up on a Wednesday to buy new issues is a very unique one in casual purchasing, and shopping habits will change as the world moves more onto iPads, other tablets and phones. Comics will be able to be released at any time and at variable intervals.

- Marvel is building towards a live action TV show. Now that they have their own animation studio, and the movies are doing so well, they're ready to take the step into the TV world. Unfortunately, Joe wouldn't be drawn on exactly what TV show it's likely to be. Anyone got any ideas?

- He won't be making any appearances in any Marvel movies - that's Stan Lee's thing ("no-one wants to see me on screen!")

- Marvel have a very big meeting in a few weeks about their movies slate, and Joe says they're working on some announcements that people will be very excited about. He couldn't confirm or deny that Ant Man could be on the cards ("if I did, Marvel security would take me out").

- Joe commented on speculation about the Avengers sequel, and before going into too many spoilers about the first film, asked the hall if there was anyone present who hadn't seen the first film yet. Out of about 600 people, no-one raised their hand. Speaking about Thanos, Joe urged everyone to remember that "just because it takes place in space, it doesn't mean that the film will have lots of cosmic characters". So, it sounds like a decent portion of the film will take place in space.

- Mark Millar said that Joss Whedon has a girls name.

- Joe also spoke about Marvel's relationship with Disney - and says it's a very healthy one. He claims that it's been win-win for Marvel, and in no way have they been 'softened' or adversely affected by the House of Mouse. He says Disney are doing exactly what they promised, which is giving Marvel the autonomy they need to carry on doing what they do - and what they do is the reason why they were a tempting purchase in the first place! He also explained that Disney has "amazing international muscle, which Marvel did not have". According to Joe, the ridiculously giant success of The Avengers is partly down to Disney marketing - and that Marvel couldn't have done it like that without them. He says that basically The Avengers was Disney showing the world why they bought Marvel.

- An unfortunate girl in the audience asked whether there might be a crossover between X-Men and The Avengers on film one day, and how that would impact the fact that Chris Evans plays both the Human Torch and Captain America. Mark Millar pointed out that the Human Torch is in the Fantastic Four, not the X-Men, and asked the girl who'd asked the question to leave immediately.

- Right now, there aren't any plans to make any smaller-budget movies, even though Joe has several characters he'd love to make a film about. He explained that "our business now is tentpole movies...that may change in a year or five or ten though".

- Joe revealed that he hasn't even seen the now-famous shwarma eating scene at the end of the Avengers, but told us that he was at the party following the Hollywood premiere, and saw all the main cast halfway through to shoot the scene. "Me and some of the Marvel creators recreated that scene in Soho last night actually".

- There has been some hate mail about having a non-white Spider-Man unfortunately. As Joe said, there are always a few idiots out there.

- In a chat afterwards, Joe told me that he'd love to make a tentpole movie with a female lead, but that he really doesn't think there is an actress right now who could carry it, or a character that would work either. I'm thinking I might agree with him on this one actually.

La Marvel ha fatto sapere diverse notizie sui vari cartoni animati:

* Ultimate Spider-Man molto probabilmente si concluderà con la seconda stagione. La Marvel è a conoscenza che i fans dell'Uomo Ragno non amano questa serie quindi si fermerà con la seconda serie, che comunque cambierà un po' rispetto alla prima stagione, ci sarà un po' più di elementi drammatici e se i fans la apprezzeranno allora proseguirà altrimenti sarà cancellata.

* Hulk and the Agents of SMASH è una serie più per bambini come Ultimate Spider-Man e il target è per bambini-ragazzini dai 5 ai 12 anni. La serie è presentata come un cartone incentrato molto sull'azione. Proprio perchè è un cartone assai simile a Ultimate Spider-Man, la Marvel, per evitare nuove lamentele da parte dei fans, ha ordinato per il momento solo 26 episodi, se gli ascolti saranno buoni proseguirà altrimenti no.

* Avengers Assemble è il progetto più ambizioso per l'animazione Marvel. La serie sarà ambientata nello stesso universo dei film al cinema e NON sarà ambientata nello stesso universo di Ultimate Spider-Man e di Hulk and the Agents of SMASH. A differenza di questi cartoni, Avengers Assemble avrà un tono molto più serio per avere appeal sia sui bambini sia sui fans dell'universo Marvel. Inoltre la Marvel impiegherà molti soldi nel progetto quindi questa serie avrà una qualità grafica molto elevata mai vista prima per un cartone della Marvel. I protagonisti saranno il team dei Vendicatori presenti al cinema (Iron man, Thor, Vedova Nera, Capitan America, Occhio di Falco e Hulk) a cui si aggiungono Falcon (che è stato scelto in modo che così gli spettatori possono familiarizzare con questo personaggio che si dice debutterà anche in uno dei prossimi film della Marvel), Pantera Nera, Ant-Man e forse Ms Marvel. Thanos sarà uno dei grandi nemici della serie.

* I Marvel Animation Studios stanno lavorano anche a due nuove serie televisive animate, una di queste sarà una nuova serie sugli X-Men, che sarà in linea con Avengers Assemble quindi una serie dai toni seri e con una qualità grafica elevata, mentre l'altra al momento è ancora top secret.

* Per quanto riguarda il Comic con 2012: verrà mostrato un episodio completo di Ultimate Spider-man e la Marvel spera di mostrare anche un episodio completo di Hulk and the Agents of SMASH o se non ci riuscirà almeno 5 minuti. Inoltre verranno rivelate nuove informazioni circa Avengers Assemble e anche il look dei personaggi e qualche test di animazione

* Inoltre la Marvel sta pensando di adattare la saga Avengers vs X-men e ancora non si sa se verrà realizzata come un film direct to video oppure un crossover tra le due nuove serie animate degli Avengers e degli X-Men.

EXCLUSIVE: “Agent X” spills the bean on the future of Marvel Animation, and did he just mention a new X-men TV series?

Our trusted friend and, Marvel insider, Agent X is back with more EXCITING reveals. After, his earlier leaks were confirmed by yesterday’s Avengers Assemble announcement, Agent X revealed to me today Marvel’s future plans regarding its animation division. This also includes some fun facts about Comic con panel. While all his previous info have been proven correct, I will still suggest to take the below news with a grain of Salt.

As requested by agentX, i have reworded all what he revealed, so that his won’t get recognized by Marvel

*Disclaimer from AgentX: The info provided is accurate as of today. In the ream of Animation, changes happen all the time. So between now and series announcement and premiere couple things might change*

Regarding Ultimate Spider-man:

- Marvel knows how much fans hate the show. They know, that they messed up when they could have brought both kids and adults fans together, instead of focusing on the children. Regardless of what their PR BS makes it sound, the reason Ultimate Spider-man has been renewed for a second season, is that the network ordered the second season WAY before the series debut. The publicity stunt Marvel pulled by stating the show has been renewed by popular demand, is just a strategy to try and tell fans that people like this show maybe you should give it a second chance.

- Ratings for the show are not good. He then gave me the following example: If you have 10 people watching a channel, then you introduce a new show, and instantly 200 are watching, but after 2 weeks the number goes down to 60 you still have bad ratings drop, yet its way better than the original 10 they had before the show. Agent X wants you to look at that statement carefully and you will know the “TRUE” meaning of Marvel ratings PR stunt.

- Chances are more than high that Ultimate Spider-man will conclude after season 2. There will be some minor changes to the show during its 2013 season (a bit less in your face humor, a tiny bit more drama, and less scripts from “man of action” while more from Bendis and Dini). If by chance, the fans embrace the show in its second season it will be renewed, otherwise a new Spider-man show will replace it. Early talk about a series in the same tone as the upcoming movie reboot have been discussed, but nothing more than just that: discussion. Agent X also still urges the fans to show their disapproval of the show, since Marvel is listening, although it takes months and years for the company to answer the cries.


Hulk and the Agents of SMASH:

- Agent X wants to make sure that people understand that the HULK and the Agents of SMASH is meant for kids, much like Ultimate Spider-man. Which a mistake Marvel is now realizing, but again, way too late.

- After Ultimate Spider-man fan backlash, Marvel is almost certain that hardcore fans are not going to enjoy this show either.

- Unlike Ultimate Spider-man, only 26 episode have been ordered, and to not make the same mistake again, the network will wait on the ratings before ordering a second season of SMASH.

- As mentioned before, the show premise is ACTION, ACTION, ACTION with no place for plot development. The target demographic of the show is boys ages 5-12. So again it seems a disney kids show with Marvel characters.


Regarding Avengers Assemble:

- According to Agent X, Avengers Assemble is the most ambitious TV animation project for marvel, ever. Unlike, Ultimate Spider-man and Hulk Agents of SMASH, the new Avengers show is taking cues from the successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, and from the thousands of angry fans comments towards the direction of Ultimate Spider-man. As a result the new show WILL NOT be in the same universe as Ultimate Spidey, nor is it in the same universe as Hulk and the Agents of SMASH.

- While still a cartoon, Avengers Assemble will be taking itself seriously and trying to appeal to both kids and hardcore fans.

- Marvel is spending money on Avengers Assemble than any other show, so expect high quality animation like never before.

- Wishful talk was made to have the actors from the Avengers movie reprise their roles in the show. But due to high costs, the idea could have been scrapped. Agent X does not know what was the final decision in this matter, but he knows that whoever is voicing the characters will try to sound similar to the movie cast.

- Falcon was chosen to be in the roster, so that fans get familiarized with the character, before his “certain” appearance in the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

- Panther and Antman will join the cast later and a possible Ms Marvel inclusion is also on the table.

- Thanos will feature as a big villain in the show.


2 more Animated Tv projects on the work:

- According to Agent X, 2 more, unannounced Marvel animated TV series are in different stage of production.

- One of these series is a new X-men animated show.

- Not much is known abt the X-men show except that it might have the same tone as Avengers Assemble.

- Agent X either did not want to reveal the second project or did not have enough info.


Regarding Comic con 2012:

- Agent X informed me that Marvel is a bit worried about fans reaction to Ultimate Spider-man on their animation panel.

- There will be undercover Marvel guys who will ask questions to the panelist, praising Ultimate Spider-man, and pretending to be hardcore fans who “supposedly” enjoy the show. While Agent X hates the sneaky plan, he tells me this is very common with almost all companies.

- A full episode of Ultimate Spider-man will be shown at the panel. According to him, it is either a Bendis written episode (Bendis episodes are supposedly good ones) or the a major villain reveal episode (either Green Goblin or Doc Octopus)

- Marvel hopes to show a full episode of Hulk and the Agents of SMASH. If the first episode has not been completed by July, a short 5min clip showing the SMASH agents in action will be shown instead.

- More info regarding Avengers Assemble will be revealed at the Panel, along with character designs, and maybe some test footage(if ready by then).

- Excpect a lot of praise from Jeph Loeb towards ultimate spider-man, and a claim that hardcore marvel fans love it, which of course is BS


Misc:

- Talks of an Avengers vs X-men adaptation is on the table. Agent X does not know if it will be a DTV movie or a crossover between the 2 upcoming tv series of Avengers Assemble and X-men.

- AgentX mentions that Marvel is moving along with new direct to video animated features. More on that in few month, he promises.

Speaking at the Cup O'Joe panel at SDCC, Jeph Loeb dropped hints that their upcoming animated show Avengers Assemble may not be a reboot after all. So, what does this mean for Avengers: EMH? Check out details after the jump.

During the Cup O' Joe panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Jeph Loeb was asked about the upcoming Marvel animated TV show Avengers Assemble, which has already received a massive amount of hatred from fans for replacing the much loved Earth's Mightiest Heroes series which had adapted many great storylines, but sadly left a few unfinished due to its rushed ending.

When asked about the upcoming show by a fan, Loeb said “We love the [Avengers: EMH] show so much that one of the first things we did was...take a look what the plans were and expanded from 24 episodes to 52 episodes.”

However, despite 52 episodes being described as an "enormous commitment" for animation, Marvel took into account of the hugely positive response to last Spring's Marvel's The Avengers movie. And that response may have influenced them to focus more on the superhero cast of the movie; hence bringing life to Avengers Assemble. What does this mean for the former, much loved series?

Jeph Loeb spoke more about the new series adding that “it better reflects the cast that’s in the movie...but we’re not saying ‘Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ never happened.” Continuing on that comment, he adds his thoughts about the ending to Earth's Mightiest Heroes. “We took this giant epic story, it has a conclusion we always meant to get to...and when we get out of that you’ll see what ‘Avengers Assemble’ will take it to" Loeb added.

If this new series is truly a sequel and not a reboot, will you give it a chance? I'm sure that we will find out everything we need to know about the upcoming series when it is unveiled this weekend at Comic-Con, so stay tuned for details.

SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2012: Highlights From MARVEL TV PRESENTS Panel

Unfortunately, there were absolutely no announcements made in regards to Marvel's live-action television plans, but we do have some very interesting updates on the Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., Marvel Knights and Ultimate Spider-Man animated shows.

Marvel's television panel has just wrapped up at the San Diego Comic-Con and while we do have some interesting updates on the status of their various animated endeavours, there is sadly no new information when it comes to the many live-action shows which have been talked about for the past few years. Marvel's head of TV, Jeph Loeb hosted the panel and screened some brand new footage which is described below.


• Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes hasn't been cancelled as Avengers Assemble is being viewed as a continuation of that series.

• Footage was shown from Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and while it is currently in the early stages of production, Hulk, Red Hulk, She-Hulk, Skaar, and A-Bomb, were show and it was announced that the pilot was written by Paul Dini.

• She-Hulk was shown fighting strange flying bugs, Skaar shouts "Skaar Smash!" and Red Hulk has a large 90s style gun. It will be aimed at a younger audience.

• Avengers Assemble is compared to what Brian Michael Bendis did in the comic books with the New Avengers series. The cast of the series is similar to Marvel's The Avengers in order to expand its audience after the success of the movie.

• Footage shown featured a giant dragon attacking Manhattan as Iron Man flies the Quinjet with the team on board. Hulk pushes Thor aside and tells him, "You'll be lucky if there's anything left to smash", before jumping out of the plane. Hawkeye and Captain America are on mini jets, while Iron Man shoots missiles at the creature causing it to fall down and then get back up.

• Upcoming "Marvel Knights" motion comics include Inhumans by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, Wolverine: Origins by Joe Quesada, Paul Jenkins and Andy Kubert, Eternals by Neil Gaiman and John Romita, Jr., Wolverine: Weapon X by Jason Aaron, Esad Ribic, and Ron Garney, and Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk by Damon Lindelof and Leinil Francis Yu!

• Ultimate Spider-Man is the #1 animated show on Disney XD, and season two will feature the Lizard, Rhino, Beetle, and Electro.

Speaking with MTV Splashpage at San Diego Comic-Con, director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, next year's Pacific Rim) is asked about the current status of his planned Hulk television series. "I have had a couple of minutes with Marvel since 'Avengers,' and they have the screenplay," del Toro said. "We're waiting for a particular writer to do a rewrite on the pilot. That's where we are right now. But we're still on."

Additionally, del Toro didn't hesitate to express his love for Marvel's recent blockbuster The Avengers. "I think 'Avengers' is beautiful because you give a movie like that -- that size, that scope -- to a guy that has the tone and the pulse of those things dead on, and that's beauty or curse, you know?" the director said.

Last we heard about the Hulk series , ABC was hoping to begin airing it sometime next year. Also, del Toro has said that his vision of The Hulk will be entirely separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version (played by Edward Norton in 2008's The Incredible Hulk and by Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers). Still, with the recent success that Avengers' Hulk has found on the big screen, do you want to see the same version appear on ABC?

Announced during the Marvel Television Presents panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Knights Animation will bring five more fan-favorite storylines to life in their signature style, including “Inhumans” by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee; “Wolverine: Origins” by Joe Quesada, Paul Jenkins, and Andy Kubert; “Wolverine: Weapon X” by Jason Aaron, Ron Garney, and Esad Ribic; “Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk” by Damon Lindelof and Leinil Francis Yu; and “Eternals” by Neil Gaiman and John Romita, Jr.

Marvel Knights Animation Season Two marks the next evolution for the group, and we’ve got the exclusive trailer showing off upcoming releases “Astonishing X-Men: Torn” and “Astonishing X-Men: Unstoppable,” along with teases of each upcoming project.

Marvel.com: What do you look for when choosing a series to adapt to Marvel Knights Animation?

Kalia Cheng: Mostly, we look for a good, strong story with clearly defined and relatable characters; something that has a clear beginning, middle, end, and a consistent art style throughout. Because of the nature of the comic industry, it's common for artists to balance their work over multiple projects, and sometimes, due to availability, that leads to having a few issues of a series divided between different artists. Unfortunately, when translated to video form, that shift is definitely more awkward and noticeable, so we avoid it.

Another thing we look at is the balance between dialogue and action. Luckily, most Marvel series are all about action. But an action scene with lots of back and forth dialogue, while doable in comics, tends to slow down the pace of a scene and feels very impractical when played out in real-time.

Marvel.com: With eight Marvel Knights Animation series produced to date, how structured is the process of adapting a storyline?

Kalia Cheng: As far as development goes, most of the work is already done for us. What we do is take those already fleshed-out storylines and art, and fill in the blanks and connect the dots. We get to answer questions such as what the characters sound like, or what the back of so-and-so's costume looks like, and add to the picture. In the comics, we might see the start of a punch and the end result that implies what happened, but with Marvel Knights, we get to create the fight and see the full swing, from start to finish, in motion.

Adaptation is an art form in and of itself. There are good adaptations and there are bad adaptations. The key to creating a good adaptation is to stay as true to the core of the original as possible, and that's what we try to do, so the development process on our end is fairly similar from project to project.

Marvel.com: What was it about each series you chose for Season Two that made it a good candidate for the Marvel Knights Animation treatment?

Kalia Cheng: Aside from the reasons I outlined above, Inhumans, Eternals, and Wolverine: Origins were perfect candidates because of their uniqueness and accessibility to new fans. Wolverine: Origins, in particular, is a great gateway because it reveals a new, untold side of a well-established, fan-favorite character. And it only seemed natural at that point, to take the opportunity to delve deeper into the character with Wolverine: Tomorrow Dies Today, and Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk is just plain fun.

Marvel.com: Of the upcoming lineup, is there one series you’re particularly excited to see brought to life?

Kalia Cheng: It's a tough decision, but I think I'm most excited about Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk. I'm a huge fan of Leinil Yu's work--his art is just gorgeous, I wish I had a fraction of those skills. And Damon Lindelof is truly a mad genius in every sense of the word. But beyond that, you get to see two titans of the Marvel Universe, Wolverine and Hulk, go head to head in an all-out brawl. I'm not saying who wins, but it's a fight worth seeing.

Marvel.com: What do you think are some of Marvel Knights Animation’s greatest strengths?

Kalia Cheng: Marvel Knights is intended for an older audience, so we want to take the opportunity to tell the stories that we can't tell on TV with our regular series. We get away with a lot more violence and mature themes, all that jazz. Also, unlike the rest of our regular animation programming, Marvel Knights projects are more creator-driven, so we get all the perks that come with that: A unique point of view, edgier designs, and complex thematic and character arcs.

Marvel.com: How are you going to be pushing Marvel Knights Animation even further to continue improving and refining the medium with this upcoming slate?

Kalia Cheng: Marvel Knights Season Two + Kalia = More Awesomeness! But in all seriousness, we have the privilege of working once again with a fantastic studio in Canada called Atomic Cartoons, and this isn't their first time at the rodeo. So, we're just going to take Season Two by the horns and get the show on the road. Each project brings more experience, and with each experience, we get to try new things. Experimentation is the way to discovery, and we plan to keep on pushing those boundaries to see where they take us.

“I had one meeting with Marvel after Avengers and we had a very, very good chat. We have a writer that we want to bring on board, a very, very concrete name. I can’t reveal it, but we want to wait for that writer. It’s a writer who is otherwise engaged. So right now we are in a holding pattern until that writer becomes free. Then we’re going to do a new draft of the script.”

Nel frattempo, però, The Avengers è uscito al cinema, e grazie allo straordinario successo del film di Joss Whedon il personaggio di Hulk è stato “riabilitato”, rimescolando le carte in tavola: se un anno fa infatti il supereroe aveva uno “storico” di scarso successo alle spalle, almeno dal punto di vista cinematografico, ora le cose sono cambiate e la Marvel vuole muoversi con molta attenzione.

In una recente intervista, il sito Collider ha parlato con del Toro del progetto, ricevendo dal regista, sceneggiatore e produttore un piccolo aggiornamento:

Ho incontrato la Marvel una sola volta dopo l’uscita di The Avengers: è stata un’ottima, ottima chiaccherata. Abbiamo uno sceneggiatore, vorremmo davvero coinvolgerlo nel progetto, è un nome davvero molto serio ma non posso rivelarlo. Vogliamo aspettare che tale sceneggiatore sia disponibile, al momento è impegnato in un altro progetto. Quindi al momento stiamo aspettando la sua disponibilità, poi riscriveremo la sceneggiatura.

Insomma, sembra che ci sarà ancora da aspettare, ma per quello che sembra un ottimo motivo…

Come già segnalato in questa news su Badtaste, Joss Whedon ha raggiunto un accordo con la Marvel Studios per scrivere e dirigere The Avengers 2 e svilupperà una serie in live action per la ABC: l’annuncio è stato dato da Bob Iger, chairman e chief executive della Walt Disney Company (che possiede la Marvel e la ABC, ndt).

Ancora non è chiaro se Whedon lavorerà al drama ambientato nel mondo di The Avengers o seguirà un progetto nuovo.

Ricordiamo che la Marvel e la ABC stanno lavorando da tempo per portare i personaggi della Case delle Idee sul piccolo schermo: Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy) e David Eick (Battlestar Galactica) hanno lavorato per tutto il 2011 a una serie su Hulk, mentre Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight) era alle prese con AKA Jessica Jones. Anche se da tempo non si hanno più notizie, sappiamo che un nuovo sceneggiatore rimetterà mano allo script dello show sul Gigante di Giada.

From the classic and courageous Spider-Man to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and more, the recently established Marvel Animation Studios is sharing Marvel Universe’s most beloved characters with a new generation through high-action, humorous, and electrifying animated series. Since getting the green light less than one year ago on a new animation studio in Glendale, California, Marvel Animation Studios has been busy building from the ground up, even moving into new offices this past January.

Marvel Animation Studios recently invited D23 to check out their impressive new digs in Glendale, California, which are aptly decorated with colossal characters from the Marvel Universe—a massively muscular and hammer-wielding Thor guards one wall, a high-flying Spider-Man scales another. “It’s our gift to the building,” Eric Radomski, senior vice president, Animation Development and Production, Marvel Animation Studios, explains with a chuckle. In between developing new series and assembling a team of talented animation professionals, Eric took time out to tell us a little bit about the genesis of Marvel Animation Studios, what‛s on the horizon, and what he’s most proud of thus far.

D23: Can you tell us a little about the creation of Marvel Animation Studios?
Eric Radomski: It began as a development studio that subcontracted actual production work to smaller studios. It had the same goal as it does today: to showcase the iconic Marvel characters that everybody knows, through the art of animation.

Can you talk about your hit animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, which debuted this spring on Disney XD?
Eric: Spider-Man was my first project here. We were limited the first season by the amount of characters we had available to us to build stories around. The first season was really about introducing a new audience to Peter Parker and this new incarnation of the character. Pre-production plowed forward and we focused on developing the series’ unique 2D/3D hybrid production design, as it would set the standard for all of our animated series going forward.

And since then, you’ve continued to develop shows around these characters we all know and love.
Eric: Yes. There was a very specific request from Marvel to continue to develop the characters audiences have come to know and love from several of the recent successful Marvel movies. Iron Man is the best example of a Marvel character that struck a chord with a very broad audience. We’ll continue to develop animated versions of our most popular characters as long as the audience demands. Because there was a desire to develop a variety of properties, we really focused on strong storytelling and unique graphics in order to preserve the integrity of the characters.

What are the benefits to having your own studio?
Eric: It allows us a lot of creative control. That’s necessary, especially when you’re handling these iconic properties. The biggest goal for anyone working on these shows is not to screw it up [laughs]. It’s a matter of doing your job well, but you really want to preserve the integrity that’s been built into these properties. We thought a studio would be a really obvious and smart way of protecting all of the brands. Teaming up with Disney’s support and global reach was a perfect opportunity to really exploit the brand in a positive way.

So you’ve been building it from the ground up.
Eric: That’s pretty accurate. It came from that grain of an idea. It just makes sense for production. Television compared to long-form movies—it takes two or more years to make an hour-long movie, while we’re literally making 26 half-hour episodes in approximately nine months. The amount of content is overwhelming. Hopefully you’ve hired the right people so that production works well and everybody is happy.

And Ultimate Spider-Man is one example of this.
Eric: Correct. For Marvel Animation Studios, because we’re working with pre-existing content, the real effort is to try and build a better mousetrap. We try to preserve the real core values of all of the characters. In the case of Ultimate Spider-Man, it’s focusing on Peter Parker and Spider-Man, so the core concept of where the character came from was not going to change, but there was a very specific effort to change the time frame when we were going to portray Peter Parker. With animation, you can take some liberties with that time frame. Even though he’s in high school, it’s still a very contemporary time; it’s not a period piece.

What are you most proud of thus far?
Eric: All of these new series we’re developing fit perfectly into the Marvel Universe. They all will look similar in terms of design. But the storytelling, the individual directing and scripts, will be unique to each series. The main focus right now is getting the studio up and running, which we’ve done over the past six months. We’ve been adding staff for the past two months. Marvel Animation Studios is an opportunity for Marvel to shine. And what better support and partner to have than Disney?

Sono passati due mesi dal nostro ultimo aggiornamento sulla serie televisiva di Hulk, lo show che Guillermo del Toro e David Eick stanno sviluppando ormai da anni per la ABC e la Marvel TV: ad agosto il regista di Hellboy aveva detto che la produzione era in attesa che un determinato e apprezzato sceneggiatore, la cui identità è segreta, si liberasse dai suoi impegni per riscrivere la sceneggiatura. Intevistato da Shock Till You Drop, del Toro ha parlato ancora dell’argomento.

Al momento quello che so è la parola che mi è stata data, ovvero che c’è uno scneggiatore che la produzione vuole. Sono veramente interessati a farmi avere un incontro con lui. E’ molto, molto impegnato. Ufficialmente stiamo aspettando, ma non saprei… Dopo che The Avengers ha avuto quel successo, è possibile che il destino della serie possa cambiare. Quello che so ufficialmente – e non sto nascondendo niente – è che ci è stato detto che stavamo aspettato questo sceneggiatore e avremmo realizzato il lavoro con lui.

Shock: se andrete avanti, vorresti ancora dirigere il pilot?
Del Toro: Certo. La ragione è che i supereroi che amo e che vorrei coinvolgere sono tutti mostri. Che sia Swamp Thing, Etrigan il demone, il Dottor Strange – che non è un mostro, ma…

In occasione dell’uscita cinematografica di La Madre negli Stati Uniti, il produttore Guillermo del Toro ha parlato con la stampa dei suoi prossimi progetti, aggiornando in particolare sulla serie TV di Hulk che lui e David Eick stanno sviluppando da anni.

Già qualche settimana fa del Toro aveva rivelato di non avere notizie dalla Disney da mesi, ma apprendiamo da MTV News che la serie potrebbe essere stata accantonata:

Ho incontrato Jeph Loeb dopo The Avengers, ma dopo quel meeting è calato il più completo silenzio radio sulla serie. E’ molto frustrante per me e per i fan il fatto che non se ne sappia nulla.

Non ho notizie sulla serie da mesi, ma è ovvio che The Avengers abbia cambiato i piani della Marvel. E’ una loro proprietà, e nel caso io non lavori alla serie, allora la vedrò.

Insomma, l’impressione (che avevamo in realtà da mesi) è che dopo il successo di The Avengers la Marvel preferisca concentrarsi sulla serie tv S.H.I.E.L.D. e sul The Avengers 2 piuttosto che su una serie incentrata su Hulk.

Questo fine settimana si sta rivelando davvero una benedizione per molti progetti televisivi apparentemente perduti: la ABC ha dichiarato il proprio interesse per Star Wars: Underworld, il presidente di Fx ha annunciato che il canale tenterà nuovamente di portare in tv Powers e, oggi, tramite le parole di Melissa Rosenberg, scopriamo che anche l’adattamento di AKA Jessica Jones è ancora in vita. La sceneggiatrice di Dexter e della saga di Twilight ha lavorato fino all’anno scorso per portare lo show in onda sulla ABC: poi, così come è accaduto per Hulk, il progetto si è fermato. La Rosenberg ha spiegato che la Marvel sta portando avanti il progetto, vagliando la possibilità di affidarlo a un canale via cavo, dove gli sceneggiatori potrebbe lavorare liberamente senza dover smorzare i toni tipici del fumetto.

“La Marvel sta cercando di realizzarlo altrove”, ammette la Rosenberg. “Considerano un sacco di possibilità diverse. Non so se sarà uno show della ABC. Potrebbe essere un via cavo, davvero. La graphic novel è la prima che la Marvel realizzò per un pubblico adulto. Io ho smorzato leggermente i toni per il network, ma è davvero, davvero facile passarlo a un via cavo. Molto facile. A lot of controversy has followed the cancellation news of Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes, a show regarded by many, as the pinnacle of Marvel animation in terms of story and direction.

And according to TVbythyenumbers, the show has done extremely well in 2012, in fact it was the most watched animated series for DisneyXD.

The show, as mentioned, has been cancelled by the network in favor of a new Avengers animation, Avengers Assemble, which will debut later this year, which seem to have a higher budget and more fluid animation ,according to the show runners.

The article also shows that Avengers EMH has done better than the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, the latter has also been doing quite well as it is the highest watched show for young boys of 6 to 11 years old.

EXCLUSIVE: “When we start thinking about our shows, it’s how do we do better than we did the last time,” declares Marvel Television’s chief Jeph Loeb as the small screen arm of the comic cyclopean heads into a new hydra (no pun totally intended) of offerings. “We will never be a factory. We don’t know how to be a factory. There is no Marvel prototype.”

Certainly, as the last year has seen the end of Daredevil, Iron Fist, Punisher, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones on Netflix, the series finale of Legion tonight and the conclusion of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the next year or so, as Deadline exclusively reported last month, Marvel TV is looking for new worlds to conquer – or more like galaxies according to the EVP and multi-Eisner Awards winner.

With a live action Ghost Rider, an animated Howard The Duck and a more adult-intended series and genres coming to the now Disney-controlled Hulu, plus the launch of the Disney+ streaming service this fall, Marvel TV has, to paraphrase Loeb, risen like a phoenix from what some were assuming to be ashes. Then there’s hushed talk of a “brand new” Marvel series on broadcast too, as we heard at the TCA last week

Coming off a Comic-Con last month that saw S.H.L.E.L.D. make its Hall H debut for a long goodbye, Loeb sat down with me to talk all things Marvel TV, clear up some misconceptions, lay down some expectations and reveal how this installment of the masterplan really works.

DEADLINE: So, S.H.I.E.L.D. is coming to an end after Season 7, several new shows are coming on Hulu, crossovers, Legion ending on FX and more. So, where is Marvel TV now and going forward?

LOEB: Well, the most exciting thing right now is finding the new corners. When we start talking about Marvel Television, we like to look at the different families.

DEADLINE: What are those clans?


LOEB: So the Marvel heroes are the ones that are most closely associated with the movies, so that would be S.H.I.E.L.D., and that would be Agent Carter. They came from the movies, our two leads were actually in the movies.

Then the next group is the Marvel Street-Level Heroes, or the Marvel Knights, as we sometimes call them here. So, if the Marvel heroes are here to save the universe, the Marvel Street-Level Heroes, the Marvel Knights, often they are just to save themselves, to save the neighborhood.


Some of those appeared on Netflix, but there are others that live in that category, which are still to come.

Then we took a look at the Marvel Universe that was upcoming and we knew that Tom Holland was going to be playing the role of Peter Parker in Spider-man, so the idea of YA, the idea of young heroes was something that got us very excited because it works really well on television.

DEADLINE: If has become one of the major streams for you in a very short time with Cloak & Dagger on Freeform and Runaways on Hulu, both now Disney controlled units …


LOEB: … and great casts and really completely different shows in terms of tone, and yet, you can see how those kids would mix well together

DEADLINE: The much-rumored Cloak & Dagger and Runaways crossover has become official, is this going to be just a one-off even though the two outlets have shared corporate parenthood?

LOEB: This is something we’ve wanted to do since Season 1on both shows. We hope it’s the first of many. It’s one of the many benefits of having all our shows on Disney-based platforms. It is a shared universe. #itsallconnected!

DEADLINE: In that vein, ABC’s Karey Burke revealed at TCA that you guys are in active talks on a new project for them that will be a female focus character. What can you tell us about that project and is it intended to air while S.H.I.E.L.D is still on ABC or afterwards?

LOEB: That’s classified. Sorry!

DEADLINE: What’s open information is that Legion wraps up its three-season run on FX tonight. The Noah Hawley helmed series was a very different type of show for Marvel in some people’s mind and very much indicative of your scope at the same time. I know you’ve talked about this a bit before, but looking back over the three seasons of Legion, what is your perspective on the series, Noah and maybe even more Legion down the line?


LOEB: It’s a remarkable show created and visualized by an extraordinary filmmaker. Noah carried this from the start — told us how he wanted the show to begin and how he wanted it to end — and we’ve respected that. Having FX as our partner made it very exciting as well from both a creative and marketing stand point.

As to the future, that world and those characters will always be there. It’s our hope that Noah will want to return to them is any capacity he thinks is worth telling. FX remains a huge priority for us because we can tell those unexpected stories there and John Landgraf is something of a visionary himself. They “get” us and we “get” them. We like all of that.

DEADLINE: On the flip-side, under the same corporate umbrella, there’s going to be all these Disney+ shows, Scarlet Witch and Vision, Winter Soldier and Falcon, there’s a number of them, do you feel that there is a potential of too much Marvel?


LOEB: Well, first of all, I have to make something very clear, which is those are shows that are created and run and the responsibility of the motion picture studio. Secondly, Marvel Television will be doing shows with Disney+, we just haven’t announced what we’re going to do there.

DEADLINE: And when do you think we’re going to hear what Marvel TV’s Disney+ offerings are?

LOEB: When we’re ready.

DEADLINE: OK, but let’s shift a bit to the Fox assets and some of the Marvel properties that they had licenses to – does that raise new opportunities in terms of what you guys are looking at what you want to go forward with?

LOEB: Too soon to tell.

DEADLINE: C’mon, really?

LOEB: Honestly, it’s just too soon

DEADLINE: What you do know now that you like with a new affection is animation, which of course was Marvel TV’s primary pillar before S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted in the fall of 2013. What turned the spotlight back on the ‘toons, so to speak for you?

LOEB: I’m a huge Archer fan, and Dan Buckley, who’s the president of all things other than the studio here at Marvel, and I started talking about how we have this mutual love of animation and also pushing that wall. The idea of doing something that was more adult, some of which was started with the idea of doing Deadpool animated. What we really liked was the notion of putting together a group of titles that could then be a group, as we had done with Defenders.

DEADLINE: How did you construct your band of misfits?


LOEB: We just started looking through things that made us laugh, and you know Patton Oswalt playing M.O.D.O.K., Will and Josh, who had this take on Hit-Monkey, the idea of a monkey assassin just made us smile. When Chelsea Handler and Erica Rivinoja came in, and we started talking about how do we do what we sort of refer to as Laverne and Shirley in the Marvel Universe…

DEADLINE: It’s a very good way of putting it, by the way …

LOEB: When you put Tigra and Dazzler together and you know that Chelsea’s going to voice Tigra, you just know that’s going to be just fun, and then it was just inevitable that we were going to do Howard the Duck, and we just knew that the kind of Howard the Duck we wanted to do was not going to be a live action guy in a suit or a CG creature, or whatever, we just wanted to do it as a straight ahead, smart, funny, political…


DEADLINE: Is he going to run for president like in the comics?

LOEB: (LAUGHS) We’ll see what happens.

DEADLINE: Still the best issue of that whole series …

LOEB: One of them for sure, it is absolutely wonderful. But when you have voices like Kevin Smith and Dave Willis, you just know how smart that show’s going to be.

Then we’re going to put them all together in this thing called the Offenders, which makes me smile. You know in the original pitch it was, the team that nobody asked for. It was just such the perfect marriage of tone and network with Hulu

DEADLINE: You like that relationship, clearly…

LOEB: Oh Yes! And I have to give real credit to the people at Hulu for that.

DEADLINE: That’s just good corporate politics …

LOEB: Yes, but a lot of times the reason why Marvel lands on a platform is because of the people. When they get it, when they want us. I’ve been on the other side of that, I’ve been the writer producer, who’s tried to work with the network, and there’s a whole agenda that’s going on that you don’t know anything about, you’re just making your show. We try to tell people that when a network invites Marvel in, they’re getting Marvel.

DEADLINE: What does that mean to you?


LOEB: That they’re getting this brand that’s known throughout the world. It’s just a different kind of strategizing, which is what’s the best way that we can tell the world that Marvel adult animation is on Hulu, for example.

We were talking to them, and they started scratching because when you look at the success that they’ve had with Castle Rock and the world of terror. Something that really interested us and interested them, and we always knew that we were going to do something with Ghost Rider, we were just waiting for the right place to put it.

Then we started having the same conversation, which was there is in the comic book world the Spirit of Vengeance, and they are this sort of unusual group of characters, which involve Ghost Rider, which involve Helstrom, which involve Helstrom’s sister, Anna. We suddenly saw that there were three or four shows that we could put together that we now refer to as Adventure into Fear.

DEADLINE: Is that Marvel Horror under another name?

LOEB: No, it’s terror, because when you say horror, it means so many different things. There’s everything from Saw, which is the last thing that we want to do, gore-fest kind of thing to there’s a monster running around. What we love is the notion of how we can present a Marvel hero who was truly feared and truly believed that they were a monster, but that, as the stories go on, they realize, oh, I’m the hero of the story, I’m not the villain of the story. That’s not something we’ve ever done before. So we started with Ghost Rider, we went out and managed to get Gabriel Luna to come back and reproduce the role he played on S.H.I.E.L.D. Then we’re going to do Helstrom, and then there’s a couple more that we haven’t yet revealed to the world.

DEADLINE: It’s a new twist after the Netflix situation, which started on such a high and end almost as a case of death by a thousand streaming cuts, didn’t it?

LOEB: The hardest part was while the situation at Netflix of which I really can’t go into other than to say that we were blindsided and the things that were to come weren’t finished yet. We weren’t ready to announce that, so there was this space in between it, so it did look like maybe we were going to go out Then suddenly, we were arising again like the Phoenix.

DEADLINE: Which is a good narrative in hindsight, no?

LOEB: Yes but not while you’re in it. The truth of the matter is, we were on this thing where we said, oh wait, the bumper fell off the car, but the car’s still going, but we couldn’t discuss any of that. So, in the end, however history’s going to remember the story, all that’s important to us is that we had an opportunity to change television by putting together four heroes, who then joined together in a group, and people have talked about it like this is unprecedented.

Now, we’re going to do it again with the animated series, and then we’re going to do it again with the fear-based series. It’s now become, for us, our model. We would rather try to find ways of putting together a group of characters so that when a platform meets with us to talk about what we want to do, we’re trying to create a family on that platform.

DEADLINE: On the topic of platforms, there were rumors for at least a year of a Ghost Rider series on ABC?

LOEB: (LAUGHS) I know, you bugged us about it. But no, we never intended for it to be on ABC because we wanted to do a show that was more mature. Look, it has the weight in the best way that there had been a Daredevil movie, so that when there was a Daredevil television show, people knew the name. There was a lot of weight that came with the Daredevil movie that we had to shake off and prove ourselves that we could make a television show that became what it was. The good news is people love Gabe, people love the way that character works, the feature film levels special effects – and the part that’s really exciting is we’ll push it further. It will have a little fun that folks will really dig.


DEADLINE: So, what is it that you dig?

LOEB: When we start thinking about our shows, it’s how do we do better than we did the last time. That’s partially why I could not be prouder of the people who work here because they all have that same ethic. We will never be a factory. We don’t know how to be a factory. There is no Marvel prototype.

DEADLINE: Really?

LOEB: No. Trust me, we don’t know how to do that and tell the stories that we’re telling.

That’s why going back to the beginning, that’s why we can do a Legion, a Daredevil, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a Ghost Rider. I don’t know any kind of corporation that makes a product that could do that kind of thing unless it’s at its core a storytelling machine. We have all different kinds of voices and genders and people who want to tell stories through the Marvel library, and when that happens, you get Marvel.

We believe that anyone can be a hero and that that enables you to tell stories about every single person on this planet, that’s our real secret.

Jeph Loeb, capo della Marvel TV, ha rilasciato una lunga intervista nella quale ha fatto il punto sulle proprietà in sviluppo per il piccolo schermo. Con la chiusura dell’universo Marvel su Netflix e la prossima conclusione della longeva Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., si guarda già al futuro, con nuovi progetti per ABC e Hulu, ma non solo. Tutte queste faranno capo all’universo sviluppato dai Marvel Studios, e la novità più interessante è che alcune di queste arriveranno sulla piattaforma Disney+.
Innanzitutto si è parlato del crossover confermato tra Runaways, serie di Hulu, e Cloak&Dagger, distribuito da Freeform. Loeb ha dichiarato che si trattava di un esperimento che volevano realizzare fin dalla prima stagione di entrambi gli show e che la sua speranza è che sia il primo di molti altri, anche perché si parla comunque di un universo in cui tutto è connesso.

Ecco cosa ha invece dichiarato Loeb sulle serie, come Loki, in arrivo per Disney+:

Prima di tutto vorrei chiarire che questi show sono stati creati e sono sotto la responsabilità dello studio che realizza i film. Secondo, Marvel Television realizzerà delle serie per Disney+, solo che ancora non abbiamo annunciato cosa faremo.

Su Hulu arriveranno invece delle serie animate con protagonisti i personaggi della Marvel. Una su tutte, la serie su Howard il Papero. Loeb ha dichiarato che per impostare il progetto si è partiti da idee che facessero ridere prima di tutto loro, come Patton Oswalt che interpreta M.O.D.O.K., oppure l’idea di base di Hit-Monkey, una scimmia assassina. Per quanto riguarda Howard, ha dichiarato che il personaggio sarà intelligente, divertente, politico, e per loro realizzarlo in animazione era la soluzione migliore invece di una versione in CG. Il capo della Marvel TV ha confermato poi che tutti i personaggi convergeranno in una serie unica, chiamata The Offenders.

Loeb ha sottolineato come l’idea di indirizzare show diversi a piattaforme o canali diversi è anche un modo per pubblicizzare o vendere in modo particolare quelle serie. Ad esempio, far arrivare uno show animato su Hulu è un modo per far capire che si tratta di animazione per adulti. Lo stesso avverrà con la già annunciata serie di Ghost Rider, personaggio che era già stato introdotto in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., sulla ABC, ma che avrà una propria serie su Hulu.

C’è questo particolare gruppo di personaggi, che comprende Ghost Rider, ma anche Helstrom e sua sorella, Anna. Improvvisamente abbiamo capito che c’erano tre o quattro show che potevamo mettere insieme e ai quali ci riferiamo come Adventure into Fear.

Oltre a questi personaggi ce ne saranno quindi anche altri che ancora non sono stati svelati. L’obiettivo, per Loeb, è di presentare questi presunti mostri, che però poi appaiono come eroi.

Si è parlato, inevitabilmente, anche di Netflix e dei problemi di quell’universo:

(…) non posso davvero far altro che dire che siamo stati un po’ ciechi e che su vari progetti che sarebbero arrivati non eravamo ancora pronti. Non eravamo pronti ad annunciarli, quindi ci sono stati dei momenti nel mezzo in cui sembrava che stessimo per uscire. Poi, all’improvviso, ci capitava di rialzarci in volo come la fenice.

Loeb è comunque convinto che l’esperienza su Netflix sia stata molto utile, tanto da diventare un modello per i futuri progetti condivisi già accennati, quello su The Offenders e quello su Adventure into Fear. A tutto ciò si aggiunge almeno un progetto con protagonista femminile che si cercherà di sviluppare per la ABC, ma su questo argomento il capo della Marvel TV non si è potuto sbilanciare.
