The Story of Ferdinand (Blue Sky)

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=74367

Fox Animation to Tell The Story of Ferdinand
Source: Vulture
February 18, 2011

The classic children's book, The Story of Ferdinand has been slated for development at 20th Century Fox Animation, Vulture is reporting.

The book, published in 1936 from author Munro Leaf and illustrator Robert Lawson, tells the story of a bull whose only desire in life is to smell flowers and refuses to fight when placed in a bullfighting arena.

The story (which was actually banned in several countries for its allegedly pacfifist undertones) was adapted by Walt Disney in 1938 as a short animation. In charge of developing the film for a full-length (presumably CGI) feature is said to be director Carlos Saldanha, the man behind all three of the studio's Ice Age films as well as the upcoming Rio.

Pinocchio (stop motion) (Jim Henson Co.)

First Images From Pinocchio
Source: The Jim Henson Company
February 17, 2011

It's been some time since it was first announced that Guillermo del Doro would be developing a stop-motion version of Pinocchio alongside the Jim Henson company. Today, as the studio announced its partnership with the European company, Pathe, the first pre-production images have been released as well. Check them out, along with the official press release, below:

Guillermo Del Toro and The Jim Henson Company have joined forces with Pathe to develop and produce a 3D stop motion animated version of PINOCCHIO based on the edition of Carlo Collodi's classic tale illustrated by Gris Grimly. Grimly will co-direct with Mark Gustafson (Animation Director on THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX). The team plans to move forward with production of the film later in 2011.

In this new version of one of the world's best-loved tales, the puppet Pinocchio embarks on a series of extraordinary and thrilling adventures, proving himself to be as indestructible as his love for his father.

Del Toro and his frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins have been developing the screen story over the past year, and Robbins wrote the screenplay. Del Toro will produce with Lisa Henson and Jason Lust of The Jim Henson Company and Allison Abbate (THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX, TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE, FRANKENWEENIE). Gary Ungar will serve as executive producer, as will Francois Ivernel and Cameron McCracken for Pathe. Veteran rock musician and film composer Nick Cave will serve as music consultant for the production.

The team will develop the puppets and other 3D elements with UK-based MacKinnon and Saunders, which has performed the same duties on THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX and TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE and FRANKENWEENIE.

"I believe that our tale of PINOCCHIO recaptures the darker, more daunting aspects of the book that have been missing from previous film incarnations and takes advantage of all the allegorical aspects of the tale. Gris and Mark have a clear vision of this world. Matthew, the directors and I have constructed an adaptation that I feel enormously proud of," said Guillermo Del Toro.

"Stop motion animation will be a new style of telling this well-known tale, a hand-crafted style with which we were eager to work since it requires a high level of artistry and craftsmanship that is similar to the work of The Jim Henson Company," said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company.

"There is a perfect match between the visionary world of Guillermo, the story of Pinocchio and Gris' wonderful illustrations. The talent and experience of the Henson team will ensure that Gris, Mark and Guillermo's vision comes to life in the most thrilling way," said Francois Ivernel, Executive Vice-President, Pathe.

Guillermo del Toro and Jim Henson Company Developing 3D Stop-Motion Animated PINOCCHIO

pinocchio-stop-motion-concept-art-slice-01

Guillermo del Toro, The Jim Henson Company, and Pathe are set to produce a 3D stop-motion animated adaptation of Pinocchio. Deadline reports that Gris Grimly and Mark Gustafson (animation director for Fantastic Mr. Fox) will direct the new version which will be “edgier” than the 1940 Disney adaptation. Grimly illustrated a 2002 book based on the character that will serve as the basis for the project. Del Toro and collaborator Matthew Robbins (Mimic, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark) crafted the story with Robbins penning the script.

Hit the jump for more exciting details on this project, including the participation of writer/composer Nick Cave (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford).

pinocchio-stop-motion-concept-art-01According to Deadline, the new version is “aimed at an audience 10 years and up, and a bit scarier than the Disney film.” (although as a kid, I remember the Disney version being slightly terrifying). Del Toro tells Deadline:

“There has to be darkness in any fairy tale or children’s narrative work, something the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson and Walt Disney understood. We tend to call something Disney-fied, but a lot of people forget how powerfully disturbing the best animated Disney movies are, including those kids being turned into donkeys in Pinocchio. What we’re trying to do is present a Pinocchio that is more faithful to the take that [original author Carlo Colodi] wrote. That is more surreal and slightly darker than what we’ve seen before.”

Although can anything really be more terrifying than Roberto Benigni’s attempt to play the character in 2002?

Del Toro explained what he means when he says this new Pinocchio will be “more surreal and slightly darker” than the Disney version:

“The Blue Fairy is really a dead girl’s spirit. Pinocchio has strange moments of lucid dreaming bordering on hallucinations, with black rabbits. The sperm whale that swallows Pinocchio was actually a giant dogfish, which allows for more classical scale and design. The many mishaps Pinocchio goes through include several near-death close calls, a lot more harrowing moments. The key with this is not making any of it feel gratuitous, because the story is integrated with moments of comedy and beauty. He’s one of the great characters, whose purity and innocence allows him to survive in this bleak landscape of robbers and thugs, emerging from the darkness with his soul intact.”

Guillermo del Toro image Hellboy 2 (1)If all of this emerging from the mind of del Toro doesn’t sound amazing enough, then how’s this: Nick Cave will be the music consultant and “the puppets and 3D elements will be developed with McKinnon and Saunders, the UK-based facility that worked on Fantastic Mr. Fox, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, and the upcoming Frankenweenie.

The project was originally developed in 2006 with del Toro intending to direct. Instead, he decided to do Pan’s Labyrinth and has since been unable to find time to handle it personally. However, the brilliant writer-producer-director says,

“We’ve designed key frames and characters, we know the mood and the feel, we’ve created a bible. Shooting stop motion animation takes a lot time, but we’ve got the right team and I will be there for daily or weekly updates on how it’s going.”

Del Toro is currently set to direct an R-rated big-budget 3D adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness with James Cameron producing and Tom Cruise attached to star. They hope to receive a green light from Universal Pictures in two weeks and start production by May.

Guillermo Del Toro Starting Stop-Motion 'Pinocchio' Feature With Henson And Pathe
By MIKE FLEMING | Thursday February 17, 2011 @ 12:47pm ESTTags: Allison Abbate, Cameron McCracken, Carlo Colodi, Francois Ivernel, Gary Ungar, Gris Grimly, Guillermo Del Toro,

..........

Though he’s an accomplished multi-tasker, how does del Toro have time to get involved in an animated feature getting underway at the same time? He told me that when he and Robbins originally did the screenplay nearly four years ago, he intended to direct. Del Toro has long been a stop motion fan. “I’ve had a special effects house for a decade in Mexico, and we were one of the first stop motion animated houses where a lot of influential animators trained,” he said. ”I put that down to do Pan’s Labyrinth and when Matthew and I came back to it in 2008, we added some great ideas that made it funnier and livelier, and we enlisted the aid of Nick Cave. For me, it was most important to find that voice and a big part of that is the music of the movie. But I could not make the time to direct it myself.”

His choice was Grimly ( whose original book animation was the project’s catalyst) and Gustafson, who was animation director of The Fantastic Mr. Fox, the Wes Anderson-directed stop motion adaptation of the Roald Dahl tale.

“We’ve designed key frames and characters, we know the mood and the feel, we’ve created a bible,” del Toro said. “ Shooting stop motion animation takes a lot time, but we’ve got the right team and I will be there for daily or weekly updates on how it’s going,” the tireless del Toro said.

Rumblewick (Dreamworks Animation)

DreamWorks Animation Conjures Up Rumblewick
Source: DreamWorks Animation
March 3, 2011

DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. today announced that it will bring Rumblewick to the big screen. Director Tim Johnson (Over the Hedge, Antz) and writer Jim Herzfeld (Meet the Fockers, Meet the Parents) are collaborating on the feature project, which is inspired by the children's book, "My Unwilling Witch (The Rumblewick Letters)" by Hiawyn Oram and Sarah Warburton. DreamWorks Animation development executives Chris Kuser and Gregg Taylor are overseeing the project at the studio.

"The fascinating world of witches and witches' familiars is perfectly suited for the medium of animation, where anything goes," said DreamWorks Animation's Chief Creative Officer, Bill Damaschke. "Combined with the magically creative and comedic sensibilities of Tim Johnson and Jim Herzfeld, we look forward to bringing the world of 'Rumblewick' to life."

"The odds are stacked against our main character, a hard-working rabbit. Telling the story of his struggle and triumph is a fantastic journey. I know audiences are going to fall in love with 'Rumblewick,'" added Tim Johnson.

Rumblewick will follow the adventures of a magician's rabbit for whom the invitation to learn real magic and train as a witch's familiar seems like a dream come true! But the dream becomes a nightmare when he discovers he's really a pawn in a game between rival witches. Having learned the hard way that when something seems too good to be true it probably is, he must outsmart them both to save his fuzzy little hide.

DreamWorks Animation to Adapt FLAWED DOGS from BLOOM COUNTY Cartoonist Berkeley Breathed

DreamWorks Animation knows where their bread is buttered and it’s buttered on the side of talking animals with snarky faces. The company plans to adapt the illustrated novel Flawed Dogs, which was written and illustrated by Bloom County cartoonist Berkeley Breathed. Per Variety, “Story centers around a dachshund who must reclaim his place in the family after being wrongly exiled by a jealous show dog.” I hope there’s mention that that the show dog has fucking papers and can’t be boarded.

Breathed will serve as an executive producer on the film. He said in a statement, “All my stories are sparked by a nugget of truth hiding in plain sight. In this case, it’s that all animals dream… but only dogs dream of us.” Awwwww. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Breathed’s novel.

Here’s a synopsis of Berkley Breathed’s Flawed Dogs:

Pulitzer Prize-winning Berkeley Breathed’s first illustrated novel!

Sam the Lion is actually a priceless dachshund, bred to be a show dog. More important, he is Heidy’s best friend—and she needs one like never before. Living with her reclusive uncle is hard, but Sam has a way of making her feel soft and whole. Until the day Sam is framed by the jealous poodle Cassius, and is cast out by Heidy’s uncle, alone on the wild streets, where he is roughed up by a world he was not bred for. Sporting a soup ladle for a leg, Sam befriends other abandoned dogs and journeys all the way to the Westminster Dog Show, where his plan for revenge on Cassius takes an unexpected turn when he and Heidy spot each other after years of being apart.

Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author Berkeley Breathed’s first illustrated novel is a heartwarming and humorous ode to the unconditional and lasting love we and our pets share. [Amazon]

Sony Animation Acquires 'Muncle Trogg'

By MIKE FLEMING | Thursday March 31, 2011 @ 12:15pm EDT
Tags: Michelle Raimo-Kouyate, Muncle Trogg, Sony Pictures Animation
COMMENTS (1)EMAIL THIS | PRINT THIS |

Sony Pictures Animation has bought screen rights to the Janet Foxley children's novel Muncle Trogg. It is the first acquisition made by Michelle Raimo-Kouyate since she joined as president of production. She made the deal with Sony Pictures Digital Productions president Bob Osher. The book is about a fairytale community based inside a volcano, and hidden away from humans. Jane Startz will be exec producer and Kane Lee will be co-producer.

"There are strong characters, relatable themes, a unique world and tons of inherent comedy," said Raimo-Kouyate. "As soon as I read Muncle Trogg, I knew this would speak to the kinds of animated movies I want to make at Sony Pictures Animation."

The division most recently released Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and has The Smurfs coming up with Sony Pictures.

Ugly Doll Movie (Illumination Entertainment)

http://www.deadline.com/2011/05/chris-mele...-animated-film/

Chris Meledandri's Illumination To Turn Uglydoll Into Animated Film
By MIKE FLEMING | Thursday May 26, 2011 @ 10:04am EDTTags: Chris Meledandri, David Horvath, Larry Stuckey, Sun-Min Kim, Uglydoll

Mike Fleming

EXCLUSIVE: Illumination Entertainment chief Chris Meledandri has acquired rights to turn the Uglydoll franchise into an animated feature film. Universal Pictures and Illumination will develop the film based on the global line of Uglydoll characters launched by husband-wife artist team David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim. Meet the Fockers scribe Larry Stuckey will write the script, inspired by the dolls and stories created by Horvath and Kim. Meledandri will produce, and Horvath and Kim will be executive producers through their Pretty Ugly LLC banner. The plan is to start with the feature and then branch into a wider range of media opportunities.

Meledandri told me he first started seeing the designs at the Giant Robot store near his home over a decade ago, and "I remember the immediate appeal and connection that the characters had for me. They are simple in design, expressive in personality, and once I got to know David and Sun-Min, I learned there was a mythology and a world behind this," he said. "The personality and level of wit reminded me of the illustrated work I saw from Matt Groening before he did The Simpsons. The characters have a cult following, and they've been very restrictive in where and how they've sold them. It has been a small cottage industry, but it seems just right for us in terms of the potential for a growth curve. Most importantly, the strength cuts to the heart of our strategy, which is, to start from the perspective of characters we feel have unique appeal to audiences, regardless of age."

Illumination, whose first release Despicable Me is being turned into a Universal theme park attraction, followed with Hop and is also developing a stop-motion film based on the original Addams Family characters created by Charles Addams, with Tim Burton directing. Illumination recently cast Taylor Swift, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms, Zac Efron, Rob Riggle and Betty White to provide the principal voices for The Lorax, the film based on the Dr. Seuss book. Meledandri's also got a CG-animated feature in the works, based on Ricky Gervais' book series Flanimals. On the personnel front, Illumination yesterday hired Universal Pictures marketing president Eddie Egan to head its marketing.

Andrew Adamson torna all'animazione con Beasts of Burden

Fox Animation Takes On King Kong Story

EXCLUSIVE: Rise of the Planet of the Apes isn't the only case where a film division at 20th Century Fox is monkeying around with a primate picture. Fox Animation has set the team of Christian Magalhaes & Bob Snow to write a modern day twist on the King Kong story. It will be animated, and will tell the story from the vantage point of the ape. It's an interesting take on the material, because let's face it, Kong got a bum deal and had no way to verbally complain about it. It is based on a story by Mike Weber, who'll also produce.

Shawn Levy's 21 Laps will produce with Ted Field's Radar Pictures. Magalhaes & Snow's recent spec script Murder of a Cat made the Black List and is in the process of being set up. Gersh and Madhouse rep the scribes.

Paramount Expects DreamWorks Toon Exit; Studio Starts Paramount Animation Unit; Jeff Katzenberg Zeroing In Time Warner

EXCLUSIVE: The studio's new unit called Paramount Animation will start producing one toon a year in 2014 and beyond. The studio will launch immediately a search for the top executive who will report to Paramount Motion Picture Group President Adam Goodman. There's no word yet if Gore Verbinski's recent Rango will have a sequel, but if it does it would be produced under this new banner. But what does this mean for Paramount's distribution relationship with DreamWorks Animation which ends on December 31st of 2012? "We did offer them a one-year extension on the same terms of what we have," a Paramount exec tells me.

"But Jeffrey has indicated his desire to get a better deal. And so for us long term, it only makes sense if it's improved beyond that. Given everything else that we have going on, it's the only thing that makes sense for us." Word is from folks whom Katzenberg has approached that he's interested in a sale as part of a new distribution deal. And I've learned that his current energies are focused on Time Warner after being turned down by Comcast (DWA & Comcast: Who's Pursuing Whom?), Disney, Universal, Fox, and Sony which all have their own animation units.

Exactly a year ago at 2010's Camp Allen investment conference, Comcast quashed rumors spread by Katzenberg that the new owners of NBCUniversal supposedly wanted to buy DreamWorks Animation and make him head of NBCU. Comcast's Brian Roberts and Steve Burke mentioned to several power players that Katzenberg has been pursuing them to buy DreamWorks Animation and lobbying them to make him head of NBCU. (Burke, the son of former Capital Cities/ABC president and icon Dan Burke, spent a dozen years in key Walt Disney Co positions but never got along with Katzenberg. Besides, NBCU has Illumination Entertainment.) At that time, Jeffrey already had offered up DWA to every Hollywood studio, but they and their parent companies had passed. Before Comcast, the most recent "no" had come from Time Warner's Jeff Bewkes. But now it sounds as if Katzenberg is trying there again.
Lackluster sales of 3D tickets for DreamWorks Animation's Kung Fu Panda 2 seemed to confirm that audiences are fed up with the higher ticket prices. Then again, it was Katzenberg who went around convincing those exhibitors to raise their prices before DWA got into the 3D biz. Now investors appear to be disenchanted with DreamWorks Animation, which is making all of its films in 3D. Its shares have been down nearly 20% vs this time last year.

UPDATE: Here's the Paramount Animation release:

(Los Angeles, CA – July 6, 2011) -- Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc., will launch an in-house animation division, with its first title slated for release in 2014. In making the announcement, Paramount Chairman & CEO Brad Grey said the initiative was part of the studio’s long-term strategy for growth and that the new division, Paramount Animation, will focus on high quality animation with budgets per picture of up to $100 million.

Paramount Animation’s mandate will be the development of the broadest range of family CGI animated films, with a key piece being titles under the label of Viacom’s Nickelodeon, the number one entertainment brand for kids worldwide. Paramount will also look to build on Viacom’s already thriving global consumer products business by seeking to capitalize on merchandising opportunities tied to all Paramount Animation releases.

The division will be part of the Paramount Motion Picture Group, reporting to the group’s president, Adam Goodman, and will initially target one release per year. Vice Chair Rob Moore, COO Frederick Huntsberry and Goodman are now conducting a search for the leader of the division.

“We’ve come a long way over the last six years," said Grey. "Our team has worked hard to build best in class production, marketing and distribution divisions which have proven they consistently execute at the highest level across all genres and price points. Establishing an in-house animation division was the logical next step for us.”

“The marketplace has never offered as many opportunities to create wonderfully imaginative pictures at very appealing budget levels, so we feel this is a perfect moment to launch this effort. We are now eager to expand in animation with appropriate and prudent overhead and production budgets in a way that will allow us to be nimble, creative and innovative,” added Grey. “Paramount also has the distinct advantage of being part of the Viacom family, giving us the ability to leverage its portfolio of powerful and youthful brands to create and market great films and consumer products.”

While Paramount has released an array of successful animated films in its history, the company’s first fully owned CGI animated property was Rango, released to great acclaim in March 2011. The Western, directed by Gore Verbinski and featuring the voice of Johnny Depp in the title role, has grossed over $240 million worldwide and is the best reviewed animated movie so far this year.

Kevin Lima Directing DreamWorks Animation's Monkeys of Mumbai
Source: Heat Vision
July 20, 2011

Kevin Lima (Tarzan, Enchanted) will direct DreamWorks Animation's Monkeys of Mumbai, reports Heat Vision. Also aboard the project as producers are Lisa Stewart (Monsters vs. Aliens) and Chris Chase (Enchanted).

Based on a Hindu poem called "The Ramayana," the film will detail the musical adventures of a pair of monkeys up against a supernatural demon. The original poem involves Rama (the reincarnation of Vishnu) and his quest to rescue his wife, Sita, from Ravana, the multi-armed demon king of Lanka. Monkeys play a role in the poem when Rama visits the city of Kishkindha Kanda and teams with Hanuman, a heroic monkey warrior.

Gurinder Chada and Paul Berges (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice) are writing the script. Stephen Schwartz (Broadway's "Wicked") is working on lyrics while A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) is the film's composer.
