Iwájú, which roughly translates to “The Future” in the Yoruba language, is steeped in science fiction. The long-form series is set in Lagos, Nigeria, exploring deep themes of class, innocence and challenging the status quo. Attendo tantissimo questa serie.
È da tanto che aspetto una principessa Africana alla disney.
Peccato che non sarà un film ma una serie,ma è sempre prodotta dai Walt Disney studios, quindi in teoria è canonica.

Walt Disney Animation Studios is bringing incredible experiences to the 2021 Annecy International Animation Film Festival next month—including the world premiere of an all-new theatrical short film. The premiere screening of Far From the Tree will cap off the Festival’s 60th anniversary celebration program on Tuesday, June 15.

The following day, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ (WDAS) Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee will join three talented filmmakers from the Pan-African company Kugali—Ziki Nelson, Hamid Ibrahim, and Tolu Olowofoyeku—as well as WDAS VFX Supervisor Marlon West and Head of Story Natalie Nourigat for a sneak peek at the upcoming animated series Iwájú, which is coming to Disney+ in 2022. This conversation will mark the first time, anywhere, that the creative leadership of Kugali and Disney Animation will appear together.

And on Saturday, June 19, a special screening of the Disney Animation theatrical short Us Again will close out the Annecy Festival. Us Again, which premiered in theaters alongside Raya and the Last Dragon, is set in a vibrant city pulsating with rhythm and movement. Directed by Zach Parrish (Puddles), the short follows an elderly man and his young-at-heart wife as they rekindle their youthful passion for life and each other on one magical night. Choreography from award-winning choreographers/dancers Keone and Mari Madrid (World of Dance) and a score by acclaimed composer Pinar Toprak (Captain Marvel) help bring this poignant story to life.

The Annecy Festival premiere of Far From the Tree marks a decades-long partnership between Disney Animation and the Festival, where the Oscar®-winning short Paperman and the Oscar®-nominated short Get A Horse! also premiered.

Far From the Tree tells the story of a young raccoon whose frustrated parent attempts to keep them both safe when curiosity gets the better of the little critter. Natalie Nourigat has directed the short, which will make its theatrical debut later this year with Disney Animation’s upcoming feature film Encanto. Nourigat previously presented her short Exchange Student before the Annecy Festival audience in 2019. The film would go on to be released in January 2020 with Disney Animation’s Short Circuit Experimental Films (and you can watch it now on Disney+).

“Annecy is such a special place for me,” Nourigat says, “and I am thrilled to bring my second animated short film to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. While I wish I could be there to present Far From the Tree in person, I am honored to join the Festival on the virtual stage.”

Disney Taps Cinesite to Deliver CGI for ‘Iwájú’

Cinesite has been awarded CGI animation work for the highly-anticipated series Iwájú — a Disney+ original set in a futuristic version of Lagos, Nigeria. This is the first time the feature animation and VFX studio is working with Walt Disney Animation Studios on animated content, having previously worked with Walt Disney Studios on live-action features such as Mary Poppins Returns and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The series is being produced by WDAS in collaboration with Pan-African entertainment company Kugali (kugali.com), and is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2023.

Iwájú, a name that loosely translates to “the future” in the Yoruba language, is set in Lagos and will explore deep themes of inequality, innocence and challenging the status quo.

“This show will combine Disney’s magic and animation expertise with Kugali’s fire and storytelling authenticity,” said Ziki Nelson, who cofounded Kugali with Hamid Ibrahim and Tolu Olowofoyeku with a mission to tell stories inspired by African culture through comic books, art and augmented reality.

Cinesite’s London and Montreal teams will be working with Disney Animation and Kugali leadership.The series is directed by Nelson with the Disney Animation team being led by producer Christina Chen and VFX supervisor Marlon West (Frozen, Frozen II, Moana), under the helm of Disney Animation’s Chief Creative Officer, Jennifer Lee. Cinesite’s production team is led by producer Joel MacDonald (Riverdance: The Animated Adventure, The Addams Family) and VFX supervisor Ellen Poon (Hero, Monster Hunt).

“There’s a lot to be excited about when it comes to Iwájú,” commented Eamonn Butler, Cinesite’s Chief of Animation. “For one, it’s an entirely new, original story inventively set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria. Secondly, to work with the best in animation with Walt Disney Animation Studios and fresh, new voices with the exciting storytellers of Kugali is truly a first-of-its-kind not just for Cinesite, but for all of us. The Cinesite teams have worked hard to continually raise the quality bar, and working with Disney Animation is testament to everyone’s efforts. We’re looking forward to showcasing our crew’s innovation and creativity to Disney!”

Pre-production is underway at Cinesite with top talent being recruited by Cinesite Montreal (www.cinesite.com/careers) to begin work on the series. During the course of the production, it is expected that over 200 artists, technicians and support staff will be employed to work on the series.

Iwájú is the latest animation project to start production at Cinesite and joins MGM’s The Addams Family 2; Aniventure’s Blazing Samurai, an animated comedy based on Mel Brooks’ classic film Blazing Saddles, and Hitpig, from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Berkeley Breathed — all currently in production.

Lee ended up going a step further than a meeting — after hearing some of the Kugali founders’ ideas, she greenlighted one for Disney+, a sci-fi series called Iwájú, set in Nigeria and due in 2023, to be written and directed by Kugali co-founder Ziki Nelson. It will be created jointly by the two companies, one the most powerful in media, the other an upstart founded by three friends from Nigeria and Uganda.

Iwájú is part of Lee’s effort to evolve the storied 99-year-old company she has been running since June 2018, when she was named the first woman to head Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Speriamo sia bella come serie,ci voleva proprio qualcosa dall'africa,peccato che non sia un classico.
Ma queste serie sono considerate canoniche,visto che sono prodotte dai Walt Disney studios,giusto?

Comunque sta mania di fare il documentario dietro ad ogni film/serie sta diventando l'ennesima milk cow che toglie sofisticatezza ad una piattaforma; il "dietro alle quinte" va bene in un DVD, ma salvo film evento particolari mi sembra tutto uno spremilmoni per fare numero, perchè manco si conosce l'effettiva qualità del prodotto che già si pensa al doc di accompagnamento per fare listino.

Credo che sia l'esatto contrario.

Gli speciali "dietro le quinte" sono sintomo di un studio/azienda che ritiene importante narrarsi. Sono consapevole che per i detrattori si tratta di produzioni promozionali. Io dico che hanno "anche" un valore promozionale, ma sono tradizionalmente considerate un modo per catturare l'attenzione dell'utente che, oltre a fruire le opere, è interessato ad approfondirle e a saperne qualcosa di più.

L'esistenza di documentari sulla storia dei film, storicamente, non è stata esclusivamente legata al mercato home video. La serie televisiva antologica Disney aveva al suo interno episodi che erano una via di mezzo tra teaser e "making of" dell'ultimo film in uscita. Il Disney Channel ha occasionalmente trasmesso special con caratteristiche simili. E' come prosecuzione di questa tradizione che nell'ambito dell'home entertainment i film sono stati spesso accompagnati da featurette di approfondimento.

Oggi possiamo notare che Disney+ già contiene una piccolissima porzione di questo materiale come EXTRA: credo che questo sia un elemento distintivo che da prestigio alla piattaforma piuttosto che toglierle sofisticatezza. Peccato solo che il criterio con il quale il materiale preesistente è stato inserito è piuttosto randomico (es. non c'è nulla per "FANTASIA"). Inoltre, essendo appunto inserito in modalità EXTRA, non è ricercabile.

Il fatto che cominci ad emergere una strategia di produzione di contenuti "behind the scenes" più organica e sistematica e che questo materiale sia caricato come contenuto ricercabile (MOVIE o SERIE) piuttosto che come EXTRA casuale è un fatto positivo. Anche perché il supporto fisico a cui chiedi di riservare i materiali di approfondimento ha (ahinoi) un futuro incerto.

Grazie della risposta dettagliata hector, molto convincente, è sempre proficuo lo scambio di opinioni, che ahimè si riduce sempre più ai soliti noti di questi tempi qui sul forum. Ho capito perfettamente la prospettiva dell'utente fruitore, chissà se la Disney sia animata dalla stessa "buona fede"; in me si insinua il pregiudizio in effetti. Comunque mi auguro che la serie sia all'altezza del suo "behind the scenes", io sposo un pò l'idea di Woody Allen, che il film andrebbe goduto per quello che il regista ha voluto mostrare con la sua proposizione al cinema, i "behind the scenes" arricchiscono da una parte tecnicamente parlando, ma tolgono pure buona parte della magia e dell'illusione con cui il cinema nasce.

In generale sono d'accordo sul fatto che l'opera debba parlare da sola senza la mediazione di un "making of". Penso che i documentari possano essere utili per valorizzare le seconde visioni.

Nel tempo ho notato che il cosiddetto "dietro le quinte" è stato usato con diverse finalità e mediamente preferisco quando è tarato sull'approfondimento (puntando alla "rewatchabilitá") che quando è finalizzato solo alla costruzione di un interesse (promozione).

In TV era usato con la seconda finalità, mentre nell'home entertainment e su Disney+ è generalmente privilegiata la prima. Ad esempio la serie "Assembled" esce dopo che il corrispettivo contenuto Marvel è stato pubblicato, quindi sembra essere pensato come approfondimento e non come mega pubblicità per convincere l'utente a guardarsi il film o la serie.

Aggiungerei anche la serie Legends, dove la promozione è spudorata ma semplifica e aiuta molto l'utenza con dei pratici ed efficaci riassunti, in questo sono il primo ad ammetterlo.
